Hello and welcome, to my virtual, non-canon 1984 Formula One championship - F1 1984+!

I hope this thread will be easy and satisfying to play, with a few unusual ideas, one of which is...

... 'staggered signings'. Meaning, signings of drivers, sponsors and engine suppliers will take place in two separate batches. The idea being, there is an element “should I, shouldn't I” when faced with the decision to sign a contract sooner at the risk of losing the chance to sign a superior contract that may come in the second batch, or to wait and lose the opportunity to sign a contract now in the hope there is a superior contract available in the second batch.

In addition to this, I offer you: 'D&T' (Development & Test opportunities), the ability to sign drivers so unsuccessful Wikipedia doesn't have a page for them, a veritable buffet of turbo-engine deals to be chosen from, and session result simulation like you've never experienced before because I wrote a custom thing to do it for me.

I invite those who wish to play to select a team, below!

Teams may go into debt. Your lending limit is your starting budget. Any team that is in-debt to more than the amount of their budget at the start of the season (a starting budget of £7,500,000 means you may borrow as much as £-7,500,000) will be declared bankrupt and immediately disqualified from the series.

Teams are ordered by finishing position in 1983 constructor's championship.

Below each team are the performance-related statistics of your current car. With regards to 'Drag', higher percentages mean more aerodynamic drag, lower percentages mean less drag. Reliability refers to the mechanical parts of the car, such as the front and rear suspension, gearbox, steering assembly, etc.

Currently, there is a minimum weight limit of 540kg.

D&T (Development & Test) Opportunities
D&T (Development & Test) opportunities are where you upgrade your current car, design your next car, and perform other miscellaneous tasks.

All teams may perform as many development & testing opportunities as there are weeks between events (a total of forty opportunities; the winter break between seasons having been halved for gameplay balance-reasons). Refer to the calendar at the start of the thread for a listing of where D&T opportunities fall within the season schedule.


What D&T opportunities are there?


Design of new car
At any point before the first race of the next season, you may begin developing your new car. Once the first race of the next season begins, this new car becomes your current car, and the cycle repeats. Utilise this D&T opportunity over-and-over to improve the final quality of your new car; the more times you do it, the better you car for next year will be. For next year's car, you need not mention, nor cannot focus on, specific areas - it is a randomised process.

Development of current car
You may choose an area of focus for testing and development of your current car, which will result in an appropriate improvement. Possible directions of current car development:
  • Increase downforce
  • Reduce drag
  • Increase mechanical grip
  • Reduce weight
  • Increase reliability

Development of works and semi-works engine
This opportunity is only available to teams with works or semi-works engine deals. Performing this D&T opportunity will improve your engine in the direction of development specified for the engine; the direction of each engine's development can be found below the calendar at the start of the thread. Works team are free to change the direction of their engine's development any time they like; semi-works teams have no say in the direction of development of their engine.

Driver development
Nominate one of your drivers to undergo an intensive session with a driver trainer, working on their psychology and fitness, with a detailed analysis of their driving technique, style and habits in the cockpit, to look for improvements. The result will be a small, permanent improvement in your driver's performance.

Driver shoot-out
Select up-to six drivers, either from your team or unsigned on the market, and have them complete a test day in your identically-prepared car(s). You will receive the lap time results from the session, to aid comparison of their skills.

Team expansion – from one car to two cars, or from two cars to three cars
Currently, one, two and three-car teams are legal. If you are a one-car team who wish to begin entering two cars per race, or a two-car team who wish to begin entering three cars per race, this D&T opportunity is a prerequisite. The time and cost is used for preparation, and the acquisition of required parts, equipment, logistics, etc. for the additional car. Attempting to enter an additional car into a race without first utilising this D&T opportunity will result in Mr Ecclestone personally standing in front of your car with his arms folded, preventing it from leaving its pit garage.

Team contraction - from three cars to two cars, or from two cars to one car
If you wish to reduce the size of your entry, use this D&T opportunity to do so. The cost of the D&T opportunity is waived entirely, offering no timing advantage or disadvantage. You will be credited an amount composited from the value of your current car; the surplus car and its running gear is auctioned and/or liquidated off. For reference, below are two examples of the estimated income a team would be provided with, upon contracting the size of their team:

  • Chassis specification of 20% Downforce, 80% Drag, 20% Mechanical Grip, 590kg Weight (significantly overweight), 20% Reliability = credit of £810,000.
  • Chassis specification of 80% Downforce, 20% Drag, 80% Mechanical Grip, 540kg Weight (minimum legal weight), 80% Reliability = credit of £3,260,000.

Contracting your team will never result in a team losing money on the deal, regardless of how poor or outdated your current car may be.


Re-use of Previous Season's Chassis
Re-use of your 1984 car is legal for 1985.

Using a legacy chassis will result in an automatic halving of its performance ratings (with the exception of weight), and performance improvability. For example:

In the event that a legacy car is legally underweight, ballast will automatically be added in such a way that it has an entirely neutral effect on the chassis (other than its weight).

Note that values which exceed the normally-defined bounds (legacy chassis drag values can go over 100%, whereas a new chassis - no matter how under-developed - will never have more than 100% drag) will be adhered to, in terms of both on-track performance, and improvability.

Where division results in a floating-point number, this amount will be rounded-up to the nearest integer.

The only team I can see logically carrying-over from 1983 would be Theodore, but Teddy Yip doesn't seem keen on the idea, so I will have to be firm and say 'No'.

If it's any comfort, I've heard rumours there are as many as 3 (three!) new teams entering next year, which you would be first in the queue to pick from. Besides, as this is my first time running a virtual championship, it'll probably be a disaster, and all the bugs will be worked out for '85...

Allow me to keep your thirst temporarily satiated with the 1984 season calendar, now posted at the start of the thread.

But first, all eyes on... the manufacturer-backed team's incomes for the season!

I'd like to make it clear to those that have chosen to manage manufacturer-backed teams with matching works engines (Renault and Ferrari), that I will not 'bound' you to those engines. However, for those managers, failing to choose the matching works engine deal for your team will result in your manufacturer stripping you of the budget they provide you with each season, the loss of the manufacturer's name as your team name, as well as other possible (likely political) ramifications down the line.

Teams which are supported by a manufacturer will receive financial support in the form of additional income from their parent company. These are non-negotiable, and are subject to change each season. I have added these to your remaining budgets at the start of the thread.

Some (or in this case, all) parent manufacturers do not permit signing of a team (or, failing that, a supplementary) sponsor. This is due to the manufacturer competing in the sport for the purpose of advertising themselves, thus wishing to take up the prime sponsorship locations on the car, and feeling their financial contribution to the team is sufficient compensation.

In theory, you got shotgun to run the legend that is Minardi ;) I suppose the other teams would be Zakspeed and Beatrice-Haas.

Actually, that's not a bad shout. Would it be possible to promote Minardi a year early? They'd be off the back of four seasons' relative success in European Formula Two, and with that series in decline it would make sense to move to Formula One (as they do a year later)

Erm... I hate to point it out, but ATS isn't a manufacturer team- you're thinking of the 1960s Italian ATS run by ex-Ferrari engineers, not the 1970/80s ATS sponsored by the German wheel company and ran by Gunther Schmid, which is this one.

Also, Minardi in theory could have competed in 1984, as they built a V8-powered M184 chassis, but lost their engine deal, so Minardi in this season would not be a complete anachronism if you decide to add them.

In the context of this virtual series, I use the term 'Manufacturer' for scope beyond automobile manufacture.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about Schmid's ATS team, but AFAIK he entered Formula One to continue promoting his manufacturing concern. The ATS D7 that was run in 1984 has significant ATS-brand sponsorship on its livery.

I had a chat with a few motorsport journalists earlier today, who mentioned that your M184 design is not even close to being properly developed. They seemed to be of the opinion that, with frequent development and testing opportunities undertaken, your single car-entry would likely only be even remotely competitive by the Italian Grand Prix in September.

Driver Signing – Set One (Of Two)
This is the first of two sets of drivers available on the market. The second set is of identical size. You are not required to sign any drivers at this stage. You may fill none, some or all of your driver vacancies, if you wish.

To attempt signing of a driver, simply state the driver's name. The salary or sponsorship is what it is; there is no element of negotiation to contract signing, here.
