An exciting season, despite having the lowest total for a winner since the Seventies, mainly due to lower attrition(apart from *cough*Monaco*cough*) and the dramatically decreased field, which had only a 22 car field, which soon became 20 when Forti went bust.Last season's champion took off right where he started from, winning two races and leading in midseason. However, his Ligier would have a terrible run of luck, and from Spain to Italy,he failed to finish a single race.By that time,a new challenger arrived on the scene...

...his fellow countryman Ricardo Rosset had been on a deadly charge all throughout the year, taking four wins in the six races Diniz failed to finish, and he was now snapping right on his heels.Diniz knew he had to do something to stop him,and after Italy,Diniz had 60 pos,Rosset had 53.After Spain,Diniz had 52,Rosset had 18.Diniz failed to finish the next race, which edged Rosset closer and brought an outsider to the title chase in the form of Pedro Lamy, who was 12 positions back. Not a small margin, but with a bit of attrition, definitely surpassable.

In Japan,Diniz retired yet again, this time on his own trying to gain positions, which left Ricardo Rosset a hole to pounce upon. And pounce he did, taking his sixth victory of the season to match Diniz's record last year,as well as being able to eclipse Diniz by just enough to win the title.

Touted to be a hot talent ever since he arrived on the scene late in 1994,he was tipped to win 1995 and 1996.He failed miserably. Now,though,he has regained form but reliabilty has somewhat faltered for him. When he finally finished another race,Ukyo Katayama and Shinji Nakano had their samurai swords at the ready,Johnny Herbert brought consistency with him,but the most threatining threat came from Jos Verstappen.Tarso Marques made a valiant bid,but arrived mid-season and thus was out of the running.Salo got back at the Luxembourgish Grand Prix, but Verstappen matched him at Japan, leaving a one-on-one showdown between the two, with Herbert,Nakano and Katayama being underdogs.

The final race was dramatic. Two insignificant individuals, with no say whatsoever in the championship, collided.Salo and Verstappen were very different that day.Salo was on a madman's charge, while Verstappen laid back, waiting for attrition to sail him to the front. However,as with the growing trend this season, few people retired, not including Salo, and so Mika Salo finally gets the championship trophy critics predicted he will get.

1998 should be interesting as most of the tail-enders with lots to gain were also pretty unreliable that year (Arrows, Prost, Magnussen/Verstappen only getting a part season each, Tuero, Takagi, Rosset missing a lot of races due to missing 107% - I think Nakano has the best chance of that little group). That's why I went for Alesi who had lots of 7th and 8ths when he often qualified in the teens.

Luxembourg-Shinji Nakano/Jos Verstappen
Japanese-Jean Alesi

Let me try to compare the field this season in the form of guns...for some reason.Jean Alesi was like a machinegun, consistently firing off round after round, but sometimes the aim is a bit off.Takagi,Rosset and Tuero were like shotguns, putting in really hard hits, but often taking time to reload.Nakano was a combination of both, consistent finishing and high scores, giving the Japanese driver his first win.Defending champion Salo put up a poor performance in Tryell's last season in the sport.

Probably thought because he finished lots of races and didn't remember the bad ones, especially as he had classified DNF in France.

Except the 1998 Williams is like the 2007 BMW Sauber. Except slower. It was almost always mired in the third and fourth rows with almost no variation unless Villeneuve decided he could be bothered pushing to the limit on a given weekend.

Malaysian-Marc Gene
Japanese-Pedro de la Rosa

Wow.Marc Gene romped home to the title in his debut season a la Marc Surer back in 1981.His closest challenger was Ralf Schumacher, who won a few races but was very inconsistent.Other challengers like the Arrows cars would simply refuse to finish races, while others like Jean Alesi caught a spark to late into the season to really do anything to challenge the rampant Gene.

Also,as dinizintheoven would call it,a real-life interlude will take place due to something called End-Of-Year examinations in Singapore.Expect this thread to be back in 1.5 weeks at best,if not 2.Also,I'll be leaving the "No British Drivers" championship on hold until I complete this one to current-day.

With such a reliable machine amongst all the attrition throughout the season,it was almost certainly a given that Gaston Mazzacane would clear the way to win the Hard Charger award, but the Sauber of Mika Salo gave a run for his money, although he fell short again, failing to live up to his hype set by predictions saying he will be the one to watch.A shock victory came in Germany in the form of Rubens Barrichello, who steered his normally uncompetitive, by Hard Charger standards, Ferrari into one of the most dominating victories ever seen.

What.A.Season.

Halfway through the season it was clear the Hard Charger Award would be fought out with five contenders.Jean Alesi,Jos Verstappen and Jenson Button were the main contenders with Luciano Burti getting a supporting role and Tarso Marques was waiting to clear up the crumbs that fell off the table. However,Marques' Minardi was plagued by unreliability, dropping him out of contention.Meanwhile,Burti was snapped up by Prost, controversially replacing defending champion Gaston Mazzacane in a bold move, presumably to help out Alesi, who was seeking his first title in 12 years in the sport. And,with the sheer reliability of his Prost,he just kept finishing, and finishing and finishing.Button could not keep up and Burti was involved in a brutal crash that left him out of the season, and it seemed like the title would fall into Alesi's hands.....

....if not for Verstappen.Sure, his Arrows was not as reliable as Alesi's car,but he had the pace to climb up loads of positions, and he actually tied with Pedro Diniz's record of six wins in a season at Belgium.By then,he was way ahead of Alesi and eventually they were tied with just two races to go:America and Japan. In America,Verstappen retired with a mechanical fault, but Alesi did very little to extend the gap as he was now in the uncompetitive Jordan.Still,Alesi had a lead going into Japan. That race had the most finishers for a race that season. The irony? Alesi did not finish the race.A spinning Kimi Raikkonen,a promising rookie, spun out ahead of him and Alesi could do nothing to avoid contact, ending his race.Verstappen, meanwhile, went on to cruise to his first championship with Arrows.

Minardi win for the third time in four seasons... and each time with a new recruit! This time Webber was the new boy and he got straight into action at the highly competitive Australian Grand Prix, where Paul Stoddart made a rather confident gesture to the rookie by celebrating wildly on the podium, with some thinking Stoddart and Webber were too confident in celebrating so early. But at the end of the season, they had every right to celebrate. They had completely routed the field and team mate Alex Yoong could have finished runner up had he not employed the risky strategy of purposely going slow in qualifying to gain positions in the race,a tactic that DNQ'ed him several times and eventually cost the poor Malaysian his drive in Minardi. This caused the Jaguar of Pedro de la Rosa to split the Minardis in the standings.

I've seriously forgotten who I've guessed for the last few years of this! (Heidfeld for 2002 was a rubbish one though).

I'll re-guess 2003 to date since I've forgotten who I originally said and now I've seen how it works in the modern-ish era:

2003 Button
2004 Fisichella
2005 Monteiro
2006 Scott Speed
2007 Coulthard
2008 Heidfeld
2009 Fisichella
2010 Alguersuari
2011 Kobayashi
2012 Hulkenberg (I know things could change but I'd guess he's in a great position now)

Either way, is that the lowest score we've ever seen in the championship?

On another note, I predict that Jos the Boss will win in 2003 with Christian Klien taking the title in 2004. I'll post more predictions later

Yes,that is indeed the lowest score ever seen in the championship, barely 'eclipsing' Gerhard Berger's record of -33 back in 1990.

Minardi were, once again, clear favourites to take the crown, though this would not be easy having lost last year's runaway champion,Mark Webber,to Jaguar.Still, they had the 2001 champion Jos Verstappen with them and a dangerous looking rookie in the form of Justin Wilson. However,it was McLaren and their surprisers of Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard who started to ruin Minardi's parade, and Raikkonen was dead equal with Verstappen after the British Grand Prix. That was when Minardi brought in a newcomer,Nicolas Kiesa,to "help" Verstappen win the title.Instead,Kiesa went for all the glory, putting in an incredible five races, gaining enough positions to come eigth in a field where no one looked like overtaking.

After Britian, though,McLaren had a slump in their performance, scoring zeroes across the board while Verstappen just kept gaining. In fact, after Hungary,it seemed like a godly power arrived and sent them to uncompetitiveness land, giving Verstappen a wider berth to claim the title.Minardi had a close shave this time, and they were half-facepalming at the fact that they did not put Kiesa in earlier, otherwise he would have run away into the sunset with the title.

I'm probably going to end up wrong for 2004 too given Minardi's record, possible nameless champion coming!!

Giancarlo Fisichella wins.By a landslide.Minardi's stranglehold of the sport appeared to be over if it weren't for a Hungarian driver who,by international law, disallows anyone to mention his name, other papayas will be hurled. This guy,who we shall call him HWNSNBM,challenged Fisichella all the way despite never winning a race, and a bald Italian, who allows his name to be mentioned as Gianmaria Bruni, had to win Minardi's only race in Hungary. However, this year was mainly Sauber's,with Fisichella and Massa sticking together to score high points for themselves.

Yes,yes he did.

Also, little problem concerning Indygate. Seeing as practically 4/5 of the field upped and left before the race started, this gave Minardi and Jordan a huge boost in gaining positions, thus possibly the chance to prople this to the front.Keeping that in my thoughts and possibly deciding the outcome of the championship,do I...

a)Leave the results as is,giving Minardi and Jordan a hell of a boost?
b)Take their results relative to their qualifying position(That means Schumacher qualifies 1st,Barrichello 2nd,Monteiro 3rd,Albers 4th etc.) or
c)Omitting the results of the race altogether?

I reckon yuo should leave as is to be honest. It wasn't Ferrari/Jordan/Minardi's fault that Michelin cocked up big time!

Let the protests begin.

Or,at least, that's what the headlines wrote after the 2005 US Grand Prix, where only six cars started, the Ferraris,Jordans and Minardis after tyre troubles for the Michelin-shod teams gave those three a golden opportunity to climb up a HWNSNBM load of places.Everybody thought not to worry as the FIA will declare the result void. They were wrong.Instead, the FIA let the result stand, including the original grid order, which allowed the Jordans and Minardis to climb up like rockets. And yet, only one of them prevailed.

That one was Tiago Monteiro, who didn't even need the controversial result to win the Hard Charger award.Following behind him was the ever inconsistent Kimi Raikkonen, who would gain loads of places on some racedays and on other days,he drove like as if he slept 30 minutes before a race started. This year also marks well-known madman's Eddie Jordan's first victory as team owner. It would also prove to be his last as he sold the team to some Russians.

I think I said Scott Speed for 2006 - I think it's gotta be one of the Toro Rossos anyway and I remember Liuzzi making Q2 a lot more than Speed did. Soopa Aguri are too unreliable and I don't ever remember Midland doing much.

2006? I'd say Scott Speed would win it as well. 2007 will probably be between Barrichello and Davidson with Barry just edging him out.

No one seems to remember Midland much, and it's a pity -it was the team formerly know as Jordan's most decent season between 2004 and 2008, they went from being 4 seconds off the pace to 2 seconds at some tracks by the late season.

The team was so bashed that year that I became somewhat of a fan of them, always rooting for the underdog.

All I can remember about Midland was them coming together a few times and Monteiro being decidedly disappointing compared to 2005.

After several long years, the Hard Charger Award finally returns to America with Scott Speed in the all new Toro Rosso, using the magic of consistency to blast his way past all other drivers to win without an actual race victory. He had to defend hard from an equally consistent David Coulthard and the BANZAI Super Aguri of Takuma Sato. Also,Michael Schumacher,a minnow in all the seasons he participated in,finally comes good in the season where he "announces" his retirement. For now...

Indianapolis--Chrisitjan Albers/Adrian Sutil/Alexander Wurz/Scott Speed

Istanbul--Jenson Button
Monza--Ralf Schumacher/Giancarlo Fisichella

Interlagos--Kazuki Nakajima

That return turned out better than expected for Alexander Wurz, whose consistency paid off over the banzainess of Takuma Sato, whose Super Aguri beat out the slightly embarassed faces of Honda, who cannot believe they just lost to their B-team.In fact,Wurz did not complete his first full season after seven years due to retiring early before the Brazilian Grand Prix, where his replacement,Kazuki Nakajima, impressed everybody by winning that race in stunning style. Also, title challenger Christijan Albers, who won three races earlier in the season, was fired by his team,Spyker, for playing a game of pit-stop bowling with his fuel hose.Oops.

I'd forgotten Wurz always struggled to qualify in 2007.

I'm sticking with Mr Slightly Boring for 2008. Though I also think Kazuki Nakajima has a good chance.
