Legend has it that horsehair pottery was created accidentally when long hair from a native American potter , who was removing a piece of pottery from a hot kiln, fell onto a hot pot, leaving behind an interesting carbonized design. While typically horsehair is used, it is possible to use hair from dogs, cats, humans, and even feathers from birds. Horsehair pottery is not functional because of its porous quality. There is also no glaze applied to Kevin Mathews horsehair pottery. It is only for decorative use. Never pour liquids into horse hair pottery or use it for eating food off of.
