20th Century Guatemalan Painted Wood Festival Mask acquired prior to 1970
Central America, Guatemala, 20th century CE. A huge wooden mask, painted realistically, showing a pale-complexioned person with brown eyes. Slits above the eyes provide vision for the wearer, and an opening in the nose allows them to breathe.
This type of mask may have been made to recreate the conquistadors, a common theme in Central American cultural festivals that require masks.
