Re: 2017 Gran Premio de España Thread

Nice to see the two championship leaders lining up at the front of the grid - especially after Vettel came so close to disaster in Q1!

Superb effort from Alonso, too. I've never been a big fan of his, but you have to stand up and admire that.

Nice to see a new winner added to the history books!

Very well-deserved by Bottas, hanging on under that pressure. I did think with about seven laps to go that Vettel was going to have him, especially after that flat-spotting error.

Re: Alonso to do Indy 500!

That seemed like bizarre news when I first read it, but it seems as if he'll be in a much more competitive car than he has in F1. I expect it'll be a bit like respite care for him!

I'd love it if Button came back for Monaco - a chance at a better last hurrah than he got at the end of last year!

Congratulations to George Russell on being signed for Mercedes' young driver programme: m I spoke to him briefly on Thursday to set up the interview quoted in the piece, and he certainly sounded excited, perhaps even a little stunned by it all. Blimey. Hugely surprisingly decision, and that's an understatement.

Who gets the Mercedes seat, then...? They'll surely go for a solid No. 2 driver rather than have the headache of another equal for Hamilton, surely...?

Phew!

Blimey! That was tense!

I wanted Rosberg to take the title, but I can't help but admire Hamilton did his best to dictate a rate that was out of his hands, backing Rosberg into Vettel and Verstappen. But the right result in the end, I think.

I'm particularly looking forward to this race as it's the first time this year that 1pm (UK time) race start has coincided with the one Sunday a month when I can usually finish work at 12.30 rather than 1. So I'm home in time to watch it all live, rather than on delay!

Come on Rosberg!

It seems a bit odd Button announcing this will *probably* be his final race, when he'd basically already said that anyway.

I do like it when a race goes like this, the strategies not turning out as anyone had widely predicted. I enjoy it flying in the face of the predictable. Ted Kravitz-style F1-as-a-mathematical-equation.
