April 7th 1958, Glover Trophy
Collins made the best start and jumped into the lead, ahead of Stacey, Hawthorn and the fast-starting Hill and Sanesi. Hill's early form was very impressive, taking second place by the fourth lap. Reg Parnell was the first to retire with a gearbox failure, while some more fast-starters were reaching the front of the field, such as Brian Naylor, who was now in fifth place. After a brief scuffle, he even forced his way past Stacey into fourth while Dan Gurney retired with a dragged-out oil leak. He was soon followed by the hard-pushing but too-hard-braking André Guelfi and Ivor Bueb, whose clutch failed. Next, it was Archie Scott Brown who pulled over with a gearbox failure, having single-handedly dragged the Connaught-entered O.S.C.A. to sixth place.

The race settled down very quickly, with few attempts to overtake. Collins pulled away from Hill, while Sanesi was faster than both of them, but too far to catch them. Stacey and Naylor were the only drivers close to each other on track for a long while, fighting for fourth place. Naylor took fourth place back on lap 34, though Stacey remained close behind. On lap 36, Graham Hill dropped out of a safe second place with suspension failure, proving B.C.M.A.'s unreliable reputation to be justified. The equally British entry of Henry Taylor followed suit with a few missing gears, ending the Vanwall VW58's début. Ron Flockhart soon passed Stuart Lewis-Evans for seventh place, the first overtake outside the battle for fourth in long while.

By this point, Mike Hawthorn's pace had picked up and he was making his way back to the front. He passed Stacey for fourth place with relative ease on lap 40, but Stacey was soon ahead again, no willing to give up without a fight. Stacey, Naylor and Hawthorn began to dice for third place, which soon became second place when Consalvo Sanesi's transmission failed from a valiant second place. Ron Flockhart joined him on the sidelines with a mistimed puncture. Crucially (once more), Alan Stacey also retired with a gearbox failure, having just taken a slight lead in second place. This left Collins leading ahead of Hawthorn, Naylor, Ruttman, Lewis-Evans, Halford and Russell, with 15 laps remaining.

On lap 52, Ruttman caught and passed the brave Brian Naylor, who by then was running out of steam. In fact, he was saving fuel in an attempt to reach the finish after running a richer mixture to run near the front, but all in vain. He ran out of fuel mere laps away from the finish. None of this affected Peter Collins, who had the perfect day in Sussex. Pole position, led each lap, fastest lap, and capped off his grand chelem with Ferrari's first Grand Prix victory since 1953. Mike Hawthorn and Troy Ruttman completed the podium, the first for the Cooper T45 and Lotus 12. Lewis-Evans, Halford and Russell were the last finishers.

1. Peter Collins (Ferrari) 1:38:38.71
2. Mike Hawthorn (Cooper-Climax) +1 lap
3. Troy Ruttman (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) +2 laps
4. Stuart Lewis-Evans (O.S.C.A.) +5 laps
5. Bruce Halford (Vanwall) +6 laps
6. Jim Russell (Cooper-BRM) +6 laps
Ret. Brian Naylor (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) +10 laps/Out of fuel
Ret. Alan Stacey (B.C.M.A.) +20 laps/Gearbox
Ret. Consalvo Sanesi (O.S.C.A.) +23 laps/Transmission
Ret. Ron Flockhart (B.C.M.A.) +25 laps/Puncture
Ret. Graham Hill (B.C.M.A.) +30 laps/Suspension
Ret. Henry Taylor (Vanwall) +34 laps/Gearbox
Ret. Archie Scott Brown (O.S.C.A.) +43 laps/Gearbox
Ret. André Guelfi (O.S.C.A.-Ugolini) +48 laps/Brakes
Ret. Ivor Bueb (BRM) +50 laps/Clutch
Ret. Dan Gurney (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) +53 laps/Oil leak
Ret. Reg Parnell (O.S.C.A.-Maserati) +59 laps/Gearbox

It's always good to see a top-six finish, even if it carries no points and was sixth out of six. To be six laps down does leave me wondering whether BRP has good enough machinery, but we've made our choice now and have to live with it.

To some extent, your position was due to a strategy that didn't pay off (Russell was much faster than Lewis-Evans by the end), and due to your team having no performance advantage, as it is completely new. The start will be difficult, but it should only be temporary. The Cooper-BRM is certainly a good enough car!

La Gazzetta delllo Sport wrote:First Ferrari win in nearly five years 'crucial' despite non-championship status - Bizzarri

Scuderia Ferrari's operations manager Simone Bizzarri hailed his team's first grand prix victory since 1953, despite not counting towards the world championship standings.

Peter Collins swept the recent Glover Trophy at the Goodwood Circuit in southern England, securing a Grand Chelem after scoring pole, fastest lap, and race victory while leading every lap.

Though Collins' victory does not contribute anything towards the Brit's world championship title campaign, in which he currently sits second, Bizzarri said it was a more important result than second place at the Australian Grand Prix two months ago.

"For us as a team, this was vital, more crucial even than our second place in Melbourne," he said.

"This is a grand team with great, talented, hardworking people, but with no meaningful results to show for it."

"Psychologically you can 'forget' how to win in racing. Now we have remembered. The feeling is back."

"Was it a full strength field? OK, this is true, the grid was smaller and many of our international competitors were not here. But the important thing is every aspect of the team, the reliability, the speed, the strategy, everything was 100% perfect.

"It's a long time since we had a perfect race. We showed last week we can do it. Now we must do this performance all year, and then we can fight BCMA and OSCA for the championship."

So far this season, Collins has been the only driver to feature more than once for Ferrari, with Umberto Maglioli and Onofre Marimon the other drivers to race La Scuderia's new 1958 challenger.

Ferrari are now set to expand their line-up to four cars for the European season, with Masten Gregory and Jean Behra making their debuts with the team at the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix alongside Collins and Maglioli.

Bizzarri has especially high hopes for Gregory, the bespectacled 26 year old having already impressed for customer Ferrari outfit North American Racing Team at the end of last season.

"Masten has lots of potential. The equipment he's had for most of his F1 appearances hasn't been good enough to show what he's got. Our new car should change that."

"He's rapid over a single lap, and his race consistency will get better the more he drives, and the more he spends time working with Collins and Maglioli, feeding from the experience they have."

That's good to hear, especially as this is a team I actually want to run properly, to at the very least live up to its real-life counterpart. In a really ideal world it would of course do better than the real life BRP

The glorious Loonmotors will not deign to make an official factory appearance at some backwater Grand Prix - however, the superb and fantabulously fast Guidobaldi-Loonmotor is available for any enterprising privateer to rent for their own enjoyment. A decisive and important moral victory could be yours!

L'Equipe wrote:Ecurie Voeckler unveils updated Gordini ahead of Monaco GP

French semi-privateer Ecurie Voeckler have unveiled an updated version of the Gordini car which has competed in F1 since the 1956 season, dubbed the 'Gordini Type 56/B'.

The Parisien team have created a new chassis around the existing Type 56 designs, and elected to skip the first round of the F1 season in Australia to facilitate the design and manufacture of their updated car.

However, only one example of the new car will be ready in time for Monaco, with the other three hurriedly being readied for the French Grand Prix.

"The Gordini design from 1956 is top quality, but age is having an effect," said team owner and former grand prix driver Louis-Antoine Voeckler. "We have updated the design of some components, mostly inherited from plans the Gordini engineers worked on before their factory effort stopped."

"For us, we are not an F1 powerhouse, but still we want to do well and race the best car possible. This reworked car will hopefully keep us closer to the manufacturer teams, and hopefully we will be able to score more podiums this year. Perhaps even a victory, at France, would be very nice, no?"

As the team's long time stalwart, Andre Simon has been given the honour of debuting the newly updated car at Monaco, before his team-mates get their hands on the updated machinery at Reims-Gueux.

Behra makes late Ferrari departure, joins Voeckler

Voeckler has also added a new driver to its contingent, picking up Jean Behra to join their already signed trio of Simon, Robert Manzon and Maurice Trintignant.

Behra was originally slated to race a fourth Ferrari at Monaco and France, but has instead been muscled out of La Scuderia's line-up by Masten Gregory and Onofre Marimon, who will compete in both races rather than alternating as originally planned.

The manufacture of Voeckler's newly updated Gordini chassis has created a buffer, with a 1956 car now left spare in addition to four race entries for Monaco allowing Behra to participate.

OOC: Ecurie Voeckler will design a new Tier 1 chassis and engine, named the Gordini Type 56/B and Gordini G258/B respectively. One of each will be built immediately.

Monaco GP entries
Scuderia Ferrari
Peter Collins - 246 chassis 1 / 143 engine 1
Umberto Maglioli - 246 chassis 2 / 143 engine 4
Onofre Marimon - 246 chassis 3 / 143 engine 2
Masten Gregory - 246 chassis 4 / 143 engine 3

Scuderia Ferrari will loan 801 chassis 1 and DS50 engine 2 to Andre Testut. We still have one full package, plus two chassis-only loans still available for privateers.

May 15th 1958, Monaco Grand Prix prequalifying

So, how about that Georges Burggraf, eh? The Australian Grand Prix led to a surprise victory for the rookie Frenchman ahead of Peter Collins, while B.C.M.A. and O.S.C.A. showed their renewed pace. This battle is set to continue this time around, while Voeckler have used the Gordini funds to build a new car that is likely to challenge for success as well. In total, we have well over 20 contending cars present in Monaco. Only one problem: only 20 of the 38 drivers present can start Sunday's race.

1. Bruce Kessler (Écurie Guillon Bachot) - B.C.M.A. C-01 chassis 1, Ugolini 1-58 engine 1
2. Hernando da Silva Ramos (Scuderia Centro Sud) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 10, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 14

-Scuderia Centro Sud make their first appearance of the season, with Hernando da Silva Ramos and Consalvo Sanesi taking up their full-time roles.
-After González's podium in Australia, Harry Schell joins Rob Walker Racing in a second Lotus-O.S.C.A., while Maria Teresa de Filippis takes the wheel of the second Owen Racing Organisation car.
-The new Vanwall makes its world championship début, driven by Roy Salvadori.
-Representing the private contingent this weekend is André Testut, who's driving a 1957 Ferrari.
-Luigi Musso and Mike Hawthorn will drive the works Coopers, replacing Bruce McLaren who is gaining experience in Formula 2.
-Brian Naylor will be making a spirited attempt at prequalifying his aging Lotus-Ferrari combination.
-Beginning their 1958 season, Norfolk Engineering have entered Bruce Halford in the 1956 Vanwall.
-Continuing BRM's attempts to stay in the sport, Ivor Bueb and Joe Flynn will be trying to impress this weekend.
-The similarly named British Racing Partnership is the other team entering the Cooper T45, with Jim Russell behind the wheel.
-Joining Fangio and Bonnier at O.S.C.A. are previous regular Ottorino Volonterio, Ferrari refugee Giulio Cabianca and new signing Redmond Gallagher. Can they take up a quarter of the grid?
-Joining Brabham and Moss at B.C.M.A. are former Vanwall driver Duncan Hamilton, O.S.C.A. refugee Graham Hill and motorcycle champion John Surtees. Can they take up a qu-wait...
-Reg Parnell takes over as lead driver for Maserati, driving the Cooper T41.
-After Phil Hill deputised in the second Lotus in Melbourne, the drive is filled by Belgian sportscar ace Olivier Gendebien in Monaco alongside Troy Ruttman.
-The first four-car Ferrari line-up of 1958 consists of the team's top drivers Collins, Maglioli, Marimón and Gregory. Such a strong quartet will be looking for an equally strong points haul.

Prequalifying results
1. John Surtees (B.C.M.A.) - 1:41.58

3. Redmond Gallagher (O.S.C.A.) - 1:43.39
4. Maurice Trintignant (Gordini) - 1:45.57
5. Roy Salvadori (Vanwall) - 1:45.69
6. Georges Burggraf (O.S.C.A.) - 1:46.67
7. Harry Schell (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 1:47.62
8. Olivier Gendebien (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 1:48.28
9. Jean Behra (Gordini) - 1:48.60
10. Consalvo Sanesi (O.S.C.A.) - 1:48.76

13. Brian Naylor (Lotus-Ferrari) - 1:53.73
14. Ivor Bueb (BRM) - 1:54.11
15. Reg Parnell (Cooper-Maserati) - 1:54.23
16. Bruce Halford (Vanwall) - 1:54.95
17. André Testut (Ferrari) - 1:57.23
18. Bruce Kessler (B.C.M.A.-Ugolini) - 2:01.06

The first prequalifying session of the season has a couple of surprises in store, as Ramos' private O.S.C.A. beats Gallagher's works car and Roy Salvadori outpaces Albert Park winner Georges Burggraf in the new Vanwall. Notably, Jean Behra, Consalvo Sanesi and Luigi Musso fail to qualify in good cars, though only Musso's is a new design. Jim Russell also fails to take the Cooper T45 to main qualifying. Will Mike Hawthorn be able to take the revolutionary rear-engined car to the race grid?

That is truly terrifying - how on earth has Russell managed to be a full ten seconds off the pace around the calendar's shortest circuit?

What's more concerning is that Bruce Kessler's Bachot-run Lotus-Ugolini is 19.48 seconds off the current best time, and easily has potential of being 30 seconds off the leaders by the time qualifying proper has finished, on a lap that's barely over a minute and a half in duration, even in 1958!

The more pertinent information is that Russell was only 3 seconds away from escaping pre-qualifying. As a new team, you start off with no team multipliers for performance, which explains the gap between Russell and the frontrunners.

I know, Tommy mentioned it before. I look forward to us gradually improving, it just seems like a helluva learning curve we've got

A breathtaking lap from Stirling Moss gives him his second pole in two races this season, while a great performance from Umberto Maglioli puts him on the front row between Moss and defending champion Jack Brabham. Issues with the short and narrow circuit as well as early-season reliability led the likes of Collins, Simon and Fangio to only set one or two laps, leaving them further down the order.

The large presence of very good cars was undoubtedly going to lead to heartbreak. In this case, the admittedly quick new Vanwall will be left on the sidelines, as will Surtees' B.C.M.A., Trintignant's Gordini, two Lotuses and even more surprisingly, Australian Grand Prix winner Georges Burggraf! With a semi-jumbled grid, Sunday's race is shaping up to be quite interesting.
