Autosport wrote:Vanwall: Podium or bust

Just before Vanwall shipped their equipment to the Formula One season finale at Sebring, USA, team boss and industrial magnate Tony Vandervell announced that the team's future is not looking good.

"Honestly I'm just awfully disappointed at how this year has turned out. This is our fourth year in the sport, and last year was our best so far by a large margin. So we had a very good base to build on, yet it's looking like this season will be our first in which we fail to score even a single championship point! It seems we've gone three steps backward while everyone else has taken two steps forward."

"I was well aware when I decided to enter Formula One that it's not a profitable business, but this year's misfortunes have been so costly that I don't think I'm willing to throw any more money down the drain. So unless we get a massive stroke of luck at Sebring - a podium, perhaps - I'll probably bail out. If someone else wants to keep running the operation after that, they're welcome as long as my name is not attached to it."

Two months later...

8th November 1958, United States Grand Prix qualifying

The title fights are over, Peter Collins and Ferrari are world champions. However, there is still one race to go and prize money to earn, so let's power forward! Second place in the championships remain up for grabs, after all, and 21 cars have appeared to challenge for the honours.

1. Roy Salvadori (Vandervell Products Ltd.) - Vanwall VW58 chassis 1, Vanwall VE2 engine 5
2. Tony Bettenhausen (Carroll Shelby Racing) - Ferrari 246 chassis 5, Ferrari 143 engine 5
3. André Guelfi (André Guelfi) - Cooper T45 chassis 2, Climax FPF V engine 3
4. Johnny Boyd (Bignotti-Bowes Racing Alliance) - Kurtis Kraft 500G chassis 1, Offenhauser 255 Low Tower engine 1
5. Bob Veith (Bignotti-Bowes Racing Alliance) - Kurtis Kraft 500G chassis 2, Offenhauser 255 Low Tower engine 2
6. Johnny Thomson (Johnny Thomson) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 9, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 13
7. Rodger Ward (Vulture Engineering Inc.) - Cooper T41 chassis 6, Climax FPF IV engine 3
8. Onofre Marimón (Scuderia Ferrari) – Ferrari 246 chassis 1, Ferrari 143 engine 1
9. José Froilán González (Rob Walker Racing) - Lotus 12 chassis 5, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 6
10. Alan Stacey (Owen Racing Organisation) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 2
11. Jack Brabham (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 1
12. Stirling Moss (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 2, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 2
14. John Surtees (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 3, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 3
15. Duncan Hamilton (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 2, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 4
16. Wolfgang von Trips (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 4, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 10
17. Graham Hill (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 11
18. Masten Gregory (North American Racing Team) - Ferrari 246 chassis 2, Ferrari 143 engine 4
19. Phil Hill (North American Racing Team) - Ferrari 246 chassis 4, Ferrari 143 engine 6
20. Hernando da Silva Ramos (O.S.C.A.) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 1
21. Jo Bonnier (O.S.C.A.) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 4, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 4
22. Bruce Kessler (Beverly Hills Motor Racing) - Cooper T45 chassis 1, Climax FPF V engine 1

-The increasingly despondent Tony Vandervell has sent Roy Salvadori to Sebring for one last desperate chances to score points this season. He does stand that chance, but can he even finish this time?
-1953 World Champion Tony Bettenhausen has decided, against the odds, to leave behind his USAC title aspirations in favour of having one last bite at the F1 cherry. Now 43 years old, the American makes his first appearance in over two years for the paraplegic Carroll Shelby, returning to the paddock after his terrible accident at Syracuse all those years ago.
-His usual teams having nowhere near the required budget, André Guelfi took it upon himself to hire a Cooper-Climax and make the trip Stateside himself. It's a bold move, but it might pay off for him.
-Ferrari, hoping to secure second place in the drivers' championship, have sent Onofre Marimón across the Atlantic where he will hope to score a third race win this season.
-Rob Walker and Alfred Owen have also decided to send a single car for González and Stacey respectively. While Owen is in a close fight for entrants' championship position, Walker seems to be doing it for the sake of it. Fair play to him.
-The only top team sending a full representation is B.C.M.A., who want to outscore O.S.C.A. by at least 4 points to seal second place in the championship. O.S.C.A. themselves field two cars for Ramos and Bonnier, the former himself looking to score at least 2 points more than Marimón.
-Team Lotus, also locked in a championship battle, have sent two O.S.C.A.-powered cars for von Trips and Graham Hill.
-One of Lotus' regulars, Phil Hill, will instead be driving a Ferrari for the local distributor's North American Racing Team, along with Masten Gregory.
-Bruce Kessler, let down by Bachot's total lack of cash, instead opted to enter a Cooper-Climax under his own Beverly Hills Motor Racing stable.
-Inspired by Tony Bettenhausen's return to F1, some USAC teams and drivers decided to try their luck as well. Bignotti-Bowes Racing Alliance have brought modified Kurtis Kraft-Offy roadsters to the road course in central Florida for Johnny Boyd and Bob Veith, while Vulture Engineering hired a Cooper T41 for Rodger Ward and Johnny Thomson felt confident enough to hire and prepare an O.S.C.A. by himself.
-One of the more interesting stories to happen this year was that of Regency Motors, set up by Zachariah Hamlinson of Offenhauser. Disgruntled by his treatment there, he decided to found his own engine manufacturer geared towards F1, aiming to enter Sebring and supposedly entering talks with various teams. His absence from the entry list is conspicuous, to say the least.
-A far more comprehensible absence in Sebring is that of Bill Rutan, an SCCA regular who enters a Volkswagen/Porsche/self-built hybrid model to Formula Libre events when convenient. The F1 organisers took a look at his monstrosity, then a look at the rulebook, then another look at his car, then laughed and denied the entry.

Qualifying standings
1. Stirling Moss (B.C.M.A.) - 3:07.20
2. Onofre Marimón (Ferrari) - 3:07.84
3. José Froilán González (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 3:08.84
4. Alan Stacey (B.C.M.A.) - 3:09.44
5. Hernando da Silva Ramos (O.S.C.A.) - 3:09.81
6. John Surtees (B.C.M.A.) - 3:10.33
7. Jack Brabham (B.C.M.A.) - 3:11.22
8. Jo Bonnier (O.S.C.A.) - 3:14.35
9. Roy Salvadori (Vanwall) - 3:14.68
10. Wolfgang von Trips (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 3:15.99
11. Masten Gregory (Ferrari) - 3:17.10
12. Duncan Hamilton (B.C.M.A.) - 3:17.92
13. Graham Hill (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 3:18.03
14. Phil Hill (Ferrari) - 3:21.16
15. Johnny Thomson (O.S.C.A.) - 3:25.73
16. Tony Bettenhausen (Ferrari) - 3:28.23
17. Bruce Kessler (Cooper-Climax) - 3:28.64
18. André Guelfi (Cooper-Climax) - 3:31.72
19. Rodger Ward (Cooper-Climax) - 3:33.51
20. Johnny Boyd (Kurtis Kraft-Offenhauser) - 3:37.34
21. Bob Veith (Kurtis Kraft-Offenhauser) - 3:38.72

In the final race of the season, Stirling Moss equals the absent Peter Collins with his fourth pole position of 1958 and the seventh of his career. Ferrari's Onofre Marimón is in prime position to retain second place in the drivers' championship by lining up on the front row, as well as José Froilán González in the Rob Walker Lotus. The small entry list rather flatters the midfield, but nonetheless Roy Salvadori and Wolfgang von Trips will be satisfied with top ten grid spots. As for the American private entries, Johnny Thomson's judicious use of the O.S.C.A. puts him in the dizzying heights of 15th, while the Kurtis Kraft Offys are predictably propping up the rear.

November 9th 1958, United States Grand Prix

As is becoming customary, the B.C.M.A. mob got the best getaways, but this time they faced competition from Marimón and Ramos, who were second and third by the end of the first lap behind Stirling Moss. The Brit kept the early lead as his teammates cycled through to the front, while the other men on a fast-start strategy, Johnny Thomson, Rodger Ward and Johnny Boyd, quickly entered the top ten. Further back, Bruce Kessler was the first retirement as his Cooper-Climax's gearbox failed.

Strategy quickly took hold as Brabham was soon in second place. John Surtees would have followed him through had he not suffered a puncture on lap 4, while Johnny Thomson reached the dizzying heights of fifth position thanks to the Englishman's retirement. As Marimón fell down the order, Thomson made it to fourth behind the leading B.C.M.A. trio and ahead of Ramos, Marimón, González, Boyd, Ward and Stacey. None of this stayed stable as the order continued to change from lap to lap, the field soon reduced to 17 drivers as Tony Bettenhausen's clutch and Alan Stacey's differential failed. By lap 10, Hamilton had passed Brabham for second place and González was up into fifth position.

The race settled for a while, as Marimón and Ramos managed to hold back Boyd and Ward. They quickly began to gain ground, though not from pace yet. Instead, Duncan Hamilton developed an oil leak, followed one lap later (and heartbreakingly so) by Johnny Thomson with electrical failure shortly after taking third place. The veritable hecatomb continued as Stirling Moss' engine blew in spectacular fashion from the lead of the race, joining Graham Hill by the side of the road, his Lotus having suffered from terminal gearbox issues. By the time the field size stabilised at 13 cars on lap 16, Brabham had a healthy lead over the Argentine duo of González and Marimón. The O.S.C.A. duo of Ramos and Bonnier followed, fighting for fourth with the slowly slowing Boyd and Ward. The Americans were beginning to fall back nearer to Salvadori, von Trips and Guelfi, while the field was closed by the NART Ferraris of Hill and Gregory and the Kurtis Kraft of Bob Veith.

The Americans weren't done, though. Johnny Boyd briefly found enough pace to pass the O.S.C.A. couple and take fourth position in the Kurtis Kraft, a place he didn't relinquish until the halfway mark of the race. Up front, Brabham's strategy was beginning to wear out and he was gradually losing ground to González. Could this finally be the day El Cabezón's losing streak ended? He certainly took a bigger step towards that elusive maiden win when Brabham's brakes suddenly failed on lap 26. Thankfully the long Sebring runways meant the car didn't hit anything and the Australian walked away with nothing but a scare and B.C.M.A. with no cars left running. At the same time, Jo Bonnier's clutch gave up the ghost, leaving 11 cars still in the running.

Ramos immediately took the opportunity to pick up the pace and pass Marimón for second place, shaking up the order of the all-South American top three. He didn't pull away though, and Onofre and Hernando traded the position several times over the course of the following laps. Behind them, Boyd and Ward were finally losing ground and falling behind von Trips and Salvadori, who had some issue getting by the able moves of Rodger Ward but had no such qualms when passing Boyd's Offy-powered machine. Ramos' O.S.C.A. couldn't take the thrashing the Brazilian was dishing out after a long season and snapped a suspension arm, just as Guelfi's anonymous race ended when he ran out of fuel from a slowly leaking tank. It transpired that the long absence of Sebring from the calendar led to fuel miscalculations as Gregory also ran out five laps from the end.

Ultimately, after over 8 years of hurt, the stars finally aligned for José Froilán González and Rob Walker Racing. The Argentine cruised home to take the race victory, ahead of Onofre Marimón. Von Trips held third place in the Lotus for a while, but Roy Salvadori's fast charge allowed him to slip by on the very last lap to take his and Vanwall's first and only points of the year with a cool podium, as well as the race's fastest lap. Boyd and Ward, thanks to their strategies, were left to finish fifth and sixth after a spirited fight in the dying laps, while Phil Hill and Bob Veith at least had the merit of reaching the finish.

1. José Froilán González (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) 2:14:41.70

Shelby thanks Bettenhausen for coming out to debut his team in Formula 1, and will be looking into future entries in the championship in 1959.

P6 is not too bad, just missed out on the points and annoyingly was beaten by the Kurtis Kraft but overall not a bad result for us as a one-off privateer entry.

Vulture are also considering a more permanent entry for 1959.

Hopefuly we'll start the new season soon.

I am already thinking though, looking ahead, we may have to redo some of the seasons that are already done?

I can't guarantee how quickly I'll be able to start 1959, but hopefully the answer is "soon-ish"!

As for if and when I catch up to the mid-70s, the plan is to leave the canon be and script a couple of intermediary seasons to join one with the other. If I'm not completely burnt out by then, I might keep the series going, but as a non-canon thing.

If I get time I'll update the wiki board, however long that would take. Heres to 1959!

I'm no stranger to the difficulties of doing the Constructors' and Entrants' tables, but would it not be better to just do Wikipedia's system for pre-1979 seasons: only showing the results of the highest finishing car in each race?

The previous seasons for our Alt-F1 charts show every finishing vehicle. tommykl, can you comment on this?

Good job, although some of the lower-down entrants needed putting in the right place, which I've done for you.

Budgets have been updated, but from now on to save time and space, all budgets will be shifted over onto a Google Sheet! Check over here to take a look at your team's budget: you can also find a list of all extant chassis and engines in the game, who currently owns each and who owned each in the past.

I'm currently in between jobs and will hopefully get to spend the next few weeks tinkering with my spreadsheet to better automate the process of running an event and revive the championship in time for the 1959 season.
