L'Equipe wrote:Last hurrah for Just-Émile Vernet with Formula 1 venture

Long time racer Just-Émile Vernet is making one last throw of the dice at 64 years of age, entering into Formula 1 with a self-run team.

Vernet has agreed a deal with Dutch nobleman Jonkheer Gijsbert van Loon to run a customer Guidobaldi-Loonmotor package at five Grands Prix this season. His season begins at his home race, the French GP at Reims, moving on to Zandvoort, Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring, before finishing his campaign at Silverstone.

Vernet has set-up a small office in the border down of Roubaix to manage his F1 attempt from, as close to Loonmotor's headquarters in Amsterdam as possible whilst still being located in France.

OOC: Just to be clear, this is a budgetless privateer and more a self-reminder I can look at later to sort this out when the time comes!

Team Lotus will enter the following cars for Australia:

Troy Ruttman - Lotus 12 1 - OSCA 1558 10
TBA - Lotus 12 2 - OSCA 1558 11

We'd like to request the services of either Maston Gregory or Phil Hill in the second car. Failing that, we will accept Rob Walker's offer for Harry Schell

We'd also like to offer our two spare Lotus 12 chassis for lease for any privateers that want to run in Australia

B.C.M.A. shall extend an emergency £6,000 loan to Guillon Bachot, due to mature immediately following the Australian Grand Prix. Should repayment not be completed at that time, a compound interest rate of 15% shall be applied to the principal and any accumulated interest following each subsequent race weekend.

Guillon Bachot shall be considered to be in default, should it fail to repay the totality of the original principal borrowed and all accumulated interest by November 9, 1958, marking the end of the 1958 season, or should it become insolvent prior to that date, wherein B.C.M.A. shall seek financial redress through the lawful appropriation of Guillon Bachot's remaining assets.

February 15th 1958, Australian Grand Prix qualifying

The Argentine Grand Prix may have been an O.S.C.A. cakewalk in the race, but looking into the results more closely would reveal the basis for an exciting season ahead. The new O.S.C.A. is just as good as the old, the B.C.M.A. was a contender even in inexperienced hands, and the Ferrari will also challenge for wins in expert hands. With Lotus and Cooper both waiting in the wings and ready to pounce, the championship opener, held for the first time in Melbourne following Jack Brabham's success as that of the 1956 Olympics, promises to be a cracker.

1. Alan Stacey (Owen Racing Organisation) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 2
2. Ken Kavanagh (Ken Kavanagh) - Ferrari 801 chassis 1, Ferrari DS50 engine 2
3. Stan Jones (S.J. Jones) - Ferrari 246 chassis 3, Ferrari 143 engine 2
4. Peter Collins (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 1, Ferrari 143 engine 1
5. Umberto Maglioli (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 2, Ferrari 143 engine 4
6. José Froilán González (Rob Walker Racing) - Lotus 12 chassis 6, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 8
7. Hernando da Silva Ramos (Hernando da Silva Ramos) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 10, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 14
8. Len Lukey (Len Lukey) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 5, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 2
9. Ern Seeliger (Loonmotor van Australië) - Guidobaldi FG01 chassis 3, Loonmotor SAMC-1A engine 1
10. Lex Davison (L. Davison) - Lotus 10 chassis 7, Ferrari DS50 engine 1
11. Alec Mildren (AG Mildren Pty Ltd.) - B.C.M.A. C-01 chassis 4, Bentley 84-1 engine 2
12. Bruce McLaren (Cooper Car Company) - Cooper T41 chassis 6, Climax FPF IV engine 3
14. Georges Burggraf (Alexander Racing Team) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 9, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 13
15. Jack Brabham (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 1
16. Stirling Moss (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 2, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 2
17. Juan Manuel Fangio (O.S.C.A.) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 1
18. Jo Bonnier (O.S.C.A.) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 2
19. Troy Ruttman (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 10
20. Phil Hill (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 11

-The manufacturer teams have limited their entries to two cars due to the prohibitive costs of traveling to the Antipodes. Ferrari have sent lead drivers Collins and Maglioli, B.C.M.A. have done the same with Brabham and Moss, O.S.C.A. with Fangio and Bonnier, and Lotus with Troy Ruttman and guest driver Phil Hill. Only Cooper have decided to bring just the one car, for young Kiwi racer Bruce McLaren.
-Usual European privateers have also decided to brave the conditions, also bringing other cars for local privateers to drive. Alan Stacey, José Froilán González and Georges Burggraf will be alone in representing Owen, Walker and Alexander respectively.
-Local drivers have turned out with the best machinery they could find. Experienced hands Lex Davison and Stan Jones will be driving a Lotus-Ferrari and complete Ferrari respectively, joined by Thai Grand Prix point-scorer Ken Kavanagh. The list also includes Australian Drivers' Championship regulars Len Lukey (in an O.S.C.A.), Alec Mildren (in a B.C.M.A.-Bentley) and, most amusingly, Ern Seeliger in a Guidobaldi-Loonmotor thanks to an agreement with a local club.

I may have forgotten to do this, but please submit race strategies for your drivers. Again, you may select between a fast start, fast finish, or leaving it random. Please do this as quickly as possible. If you have not done so by the time I begin the race, it will be left random.

18. Alec Mildren (B.C.M.A.-Bentley) - 2:14.77
19. Ern Seeliger (Guidobaldi-Loonmotor) - 2:20.69

Stirling Moss opens the 1958 season with his fourth career pole position, as teammate Brabham can't get a clean enough lap. Ferrari establish themselves as clear contenders as Collins and Maglioli take second and fourth places, followed by a fleet of O.S.C.A.s, Lotuses and Coopers. B.C.M.A. seem to retain the upper hand, but how close can Ferrari or O.S.C.A. run them?

February 16th 1958, Australian Grand Prix

The front row all had brilliant starts, and Brabham led the first lap, just ahead of Collins and Moss, with González, Burggraf and Ruttman close behind. Brabham kept the lead for a while, but a spirited offense from Moss gave the Australian's teammate the lead on lap 4. Moss pulled away momentarily to take the fastest lap, while Burggraf, confirming his promise, passed González to take fourth place. Shortly afterward, the first driver retired as Alec Mildren's B.C.M.A. began leaking oil. Phil Hill's gearbox, which had been experiencing trouble from the start, packed up soon after as the American was in second-last place.

Burggraf had soon caught Brabham and Collins, and joined the battle for second place on lap 13. As Collins began to defend from the sensational Frenchman, his teammate Maglioli retired after suffering recurring suspension issues. By this point, Moss' lead was stationary, and not large enough to be safe. By lap 17, Brabham, Collins and Burggraf were reeling him in, just as Bruce McLaren's unimpressive début ended through premature gearbox failure. It took until lap 22 for Burggraf to find his way past Collins and establish himself in third position. The top four were close at this point, but remained in stasis until another couple of retirements. Troy Ruttman stalled in the first corner escape road after a spin, and Ramos followed him to a spot in the grandstands as his clutch failed. Brabham began to catch Moss at a quicker rate, and had caught up by the 30th lap of the race.

It took a few laps of trying, but on lap 34 Brabham placed a clinical dive around the outside of Moss on Lakeside Drive to take the lead once more...only to retire just two laps later with acute failure of the gearbox. Jo Bonnier did so at the same time with electrical issues. A few laps later, Ken Kavanagh also suffered a gearbox failure, having been running in a sensational fifth position. His compatriots Len Lukey and Stan Jones soon joined him with steering and clutch failures respectively. Stirling Moss began to lose pace, and Burggraf and Collins had caught him shortly after lap 50. As Alan Stacey's engine failed, Burggraf attempted to pass Moss, but despite initial contact, the Brit retained the lead.

That is, until lap 55, when the Frenchman sold the dummy into Jaguar. Collins was also knocking on Stirling's door, but Moss refused to let Peter through without a fight! It took Collins until lap 66 to make his way through, but Burggraf was just ahead and immediately had to defend. Further back, Fangio's scrappy race had led him to run out of fuel, leaving only six drivers running. Stirling Moss' spirited defense also led him to run out with just three laps to go. Peter Collins would feel hard-done-by, as Moss' defense cost him a few extra laps to attempt to pass Burggraf.

Indeed, in only his second race start, Georges Burggraf held back Peter Collins to win the Australian Grand Prix for Alexander Racing Team. José Froilán González took home his eleventh podium by giving the Lotus 12 a podium in its first championship race, while Moss was classified fourth. Lex Davison was fifth, seven laps down, while the valiant final finish Ern Seeliger... did not score a point. 11 laps behind in the Guidobaldi-Loonmotor, he completed fewer laps than Fangio, who was classified in sixth place.

Autosport wrote:Australian Grand Prix Organisers Forced To Clarify Results After Official Protest
Chaos has erupted following the first world championship Australian Grand Prix after privateer Ern Seeliger, representing the Loonmotor club of Australia, has lodged an official protest at the official race results. Despite finishing 6th on the road, Australian Grand Prix organisers classified Ern Seeliger's Guidobaldi-Loonmotor in 7th position as Juan Manuel Fangio's O.S.C.A. had completed more laps before retirement.

"I finished in 6th position on the road, therefore I and Loonmotor are deserving of a world championship point" said Seeliger shortly after the race. "The organisation of the Grand Prix has been farcical, and the circuit ought to be ashamed of their conduction of proceedings."

If Seeliger's protest is accepted, then it will mark the first point for the revolutionary Guidobaldi-Loonmotor chassis after 4 years.

April 6th 1958, Glover Trophy qualifying
The championship may have started with an exciting race in Australia, capped with an unexpected result, but before the title race develops, there is another non-championship race to unfold around the Goodwood circuit. The Glover Trophy has attracted a chiefly local grid, as only four of the 17 entered drivers are not British. Still, there is a significant amount of attention placed onto this event.

1. Dan Gurney (Rob Walker Racing) - Lotus 12 chassis 6, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 8
2. Alan Stacey (Owen Racing Organisation) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 2
3. Henry Taylor (Hampshire Racing Alliance) - Vanwall VW58 chassis 2, Vanwall VE2 engine 6
4. Brian Naylor (John Brian Naylor) - Lotus 10 chassis 6, OSCA 1557 engine 9
5. Peter Collins (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 1, Ferrari 143 engine 1
6. Ron Flockhart (Ecurie Ecosse) - RP.1001 chassis 3, A/AS Wyvern engine 5
7. André Guelfi (Scuderia Ugolini) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 1, Ugolini 1-58 engine 1
8. Consalvo Sanesi (Scuderia Centro Sud) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 12, O.S.C.A 1557 engine 3
9. Graham Hill (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 2, A/AS Wyvern engine 4
10. Reg Parnell (Reg Parnell Racing) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 17, Maserati 56A engine 1
11. Jim Russell (British Racing Partnership) - Cooper T45 chassis 3, BRM P26 engine 5
12. Troy Ruttman (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 10
14. Mike Hawthorn (Cooper Car Company) - Cooper T45 chassis 1, Climax FPF V engine 1
15. Bruce Halford (Norfolk Engineering) - Vanwall VW56 chassis 6, Vanwall VE2 engine 4
16. Ivor Bueb (British Racing Motors) - BRM P25 chassis 2, BRM P26 engine 2
17. Stuart Lewis-Evans (Connaught Engineering) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 7, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 10
18. Archie Scott Brown (Connaught Engineering) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 6, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 6

-Dan Gurney, Henry Taylor and Brian Naylor will be making their first appearances in F1 machinery, each with different levels of expectations. Gurney wants to establish himself in Europe, Taylor would like to make an impression as he leaves F3, and Naylor is taking his chance on a private entry to begin his season.
-Notably, the race will mark the first appearances of the Cooper T45 and Vanwall VW58, both of which are expected to be frontrunning cars, although the favourite this weekend has to be Peter Collins in the Ferrari. After almost winning in Albert Park, the absence of established frontrunning drivers in established teams seems the perfect opportunity.

Qualifying standings
1. Peter Collins (Ferrari) - 1:27.27
2. Mike Hawthorn (Cooper-Climax) - 1:29.60
3. Alan Stacey (B.C.M.A.) - 1:30.07
4. Dan Gurney (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 1:31.12
5. Troy Ruttman (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 1:31.60
6. Graham Hill (B.C.M.A.) - 1:32.84
7. Stuart Lewis-Evans (O.S.C.A.) - 1:33.54
8. Archie Scott Brown (O.S.C.A.) - 1:33.87
9. Henry Taylor (Vanwall) - 1:34.24
10. Consalvo Sanesi (O.S.C.A.) - 1:34.48
11. Jim Russell (Cooper-BRM) - 1:36.79
12. Ron Flockhart (B.C.M.A.) - 1:36.99
13. Brian Naylor (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 1:37.93
14. Bruce Halford (Vanwall) - 1:38.86
15. Ivor Bueb (BRM) - 1:40.43
16. Reg Parnell (O.S.C.A.-Maserati) - 1:40.59
17. André Guelfi (O.S.C.A.-Ugolini) - 1:41.29

Ferrari take a second pole position (albeit non-championship) since the heady days of 1953, while the Cooper and Vanwall prove their worth. Henry Taylor's début is more than decent, but is overshadowed by a tremendous performance by Dan Gurney, who qualifies in fourth place for Rob Walker. This aside, there are few surprises on the grid.

Naylor 0
G. Hill 0
Ruttman -2
