The Slightly Better-Advised 1958 Season Preview - Part 2

Exams and deadlines have come and gone. I feel much better now.

Écurie Voeckler
In their third year of operation, the Paris-based team enjoyed unprecedented success. Familiarity with the Gordini package (better than the works Gordini team at times) and a newly-confident André Simon allowed the private entry to consistently challenge for points in the European rounds. The Gordini was typically unreliable and both finishes were commendable second places behind eventual world champion Jack Brabham. Now in control of Amédée Gordini's former assets and located in Linas-Montlhéry, the resources have materialised to expand the team to three cars, with Robert Manzon and Maurice Trintignant joining Simon in a French superteam. If the Gordini can remain competitive, a first win could be on the cards.

Rob Walker Racing
Using the discarded Lotus 10 (that was never very good to begin with) was always going to result in a difficult year for the new team, operated by the heir to the Johnnie Walker whisky fortune. Indeed, while qualifying for races was never an issue, the very solid line-up struggled to convert this into concrete results. Super-sub Troy Ruttman contributed four solid points, while Bira profited from the attrition at Monza to come within a few tenths of winning the Italian Grand Prix. With a significant reshuffle in the driver market, Walker will be fielding a completely new roster in 1958. José Froilán González will be leading the team, having left O.S.C.A., with dependable Harry Schell backing him. Young SCCA driver Dan Gurney has also been approached after impressing against Masten Gregory late last year, but his presence on the grid will depend on the organisers.

Vandervell Products Ltd.
Despite an overall pessimistic outlook from Tony Vandervell himself, Vanwall can pride themselves on their most consistently successful season yet, with consistant points finishes from Duncan Hamilton. Nonetheless, a new car has been designed once again, which they hope will challenge once more when combined with the successful VE2 engine from 1957. As Hamilton was tempted to join B.C.M.A. and Vandervell ambitiously threw his eggs into one very large basket, he has ended up with Roy Salvadori as a driver, a reputable club and sportscar racer, but a man with a spotty F1 record at best. This is the moment of truth for both of these parties.

Scuderia Centro Sud
1957 wasn't much of an improvement on the previous season for Mimmo Dei's valiant bunch, but a more extensive European campaign resulted in regular qualification, solid finishes, and culminated in a fifth place finish for young Masten Gregory, who promptly earned a promotion to the works Ferrari team. Hoping to continue on in the midfield and survive on goodwill and decent results, the Roman team will enter 1958 with the perennially unlucky Hernando da Silva Ramos (who never fails to remind people that he's won a Grand Prix before) and the aging Consalvo Sanesi, desperate for one final point before bowing out of Formula 1. Best of luck to them.

Owen Racing Organisation
The Owen squad's second expansion into a full-time team proved to be a success, with a near-perfect qualification record, and the judicious signing of Alan Stacey alongside veteran Jack Fairman. The tooling business owner had a turgid time, with only two finishes, but the young revelation finished half of his races, all in the top ten, and scored his and the team's first point at Silverstone. Both drivers have been retained for 1958, with Maria Teresa de Filippis hired as a third hand and the acquisition of a B.C.M.A. to complement the O.S.C.A.-BRM packages.

The 1958 Season Preview - Part 3

Irish Racing Cars
At the beginning of 1957, the Wicklow-based operation had announced the end of their operations. One year later, they haven't announced plans, but also have not mentioned their withdrawal. After a protracted comeback for the Irish and British Grands Prix returned a single point for Joe Flynn, it became obvious that the hastily-built IRC Mk. 1 is a good car. The question is: will they return this season? We sure hope they do.

North American Racing Team
This American operation, essentially Ferrari's Stateside presence, made their first F1 appearance at Watkins Glen with Masten Gregory and Phil Hill, and this year they are likely to repeat the experience. The partnership with Maranello will allow them to simply use their spare drivers, so expect an arrangement that sees Gregory and/or Hill race for them at Sebring.

Officine Alfieri Maserati
Somehow, Maserati seems to have gained some form these past two years, now regularly qualifying for races and even finishing in the top ten in Spain. Once again struggling for funds and machinery, they will be running a single car. Gerino Gerini was initially approached for a contract renewal, but the offer was politely declined. No driver has been announced, but management is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Reg Parnell to compete in selected rounds.

Norfolk Engineering
1957 was not kind to this new team. Despite initial promise and occasional flashes of pace and brilliance from Archie Scott Brown, unreliability ruled the roost and constant retirements led to irreparable damage to one of their two Vanwalls. A DB has been purchased as a desperate spare car, but in the absence of suitable funds, only Bruce Halford will be attempting to carry on the team's momentum into 1958.

MSG Köthen
Though 1957 wasn't particularly sweet to the East German team, Theo Fitzau had the good taste of keeping Heinz Melkus on-board. Although unreliability permeated the meat of the season, the team's soufflé-like rise through the time sheets was obvious, and eighth place in Spa was the icing on the cake. Fitzau has acquired a prime cut of 1958 O.S.C.A. machinery, and with a bit of luck, Melkus will be able to finally bring home the bacon.

The 1958 Season Preview - Part 4

Connaught-McAlpine Ltd.
Despite ongoing financial issues and a woefully uncompetitive car, Connaught soldier on into 1958. Last year was decidedly mediocre, despite Stuart Lewis-Evans' best efforts to get the car onto the grid six times out of eight. For this year, all the Connaught machinery has been sold off, instead purchasing an O.S.C.A. chassis and securing the services of Archie Scott Brown alongside the returning Lewis-Evans. Losing the previous chassis has led to more free cash, but the loss in prize money may make it difficult for them to survive. With rumours of a planned withdrawal from the championship later this year, things don't bode well.

Escuderia Hernandez
Although there was no surprise podium to be had helped by organisational shenanigans or exceptional attrition in 1957, Gilberte Thirion proved an ever solid driver, qualifying for each race and finishing ninth in Germany. However, the death of her close friend Annie Bousquet pushed her to call an end upon her racing career following a crash of her own in Monza. The team itself decided to design its own chassis, the 562, to replace the rebadged Gordini it had previously entered. Combined with a new O.S.C.A. engine and the emergency signing of Óscar Gálvez, this season will be pivotal in the survival of the team.

29 TC championship race victories

Écurie Écosse
David Murray's squad is fast becoming an established presence in the British and Irish rounds of the calendar, and they only gain in performance as the years go by. 1957 yielded a double-start in Wicklow, and bolstered by this result, Murray secured the signing of Sanderson and Flockhart, the duo that won the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sanderson remains largely unproven in Formula 1, and Flockhart's relegation to uncompetitive machinery throughout his career also makes this line-up unpredictable. The speed of the dark blue cars may just be surprising this year.

Ninian Sanderson - 32 - GBR

25 podiums in British club races, including 9 victories in Dundrod, Crimond, Charterhall, Snetterton, Ibsley and Goodwood

Écurie Maghreb
The Casablanca-based team finished 1957 in dire financial straits and without an operational chassis, and a total absence of news from across the Mediterranean betrays a probable end to their presence in F1, at least as a full-time entry. After two fruitless years in the sport, André Guelfi finally managed to reach the finish with two tenth places, but it seems the third year will be their last. Should the funds stretch that far and their motivation be there, they may yet be seen at the Moroccan Grand Prix near the end of the year.

Reg Parnell Racing
The racing veteran and erstwhile Grand Prix winner and title contender had a rough year in 1957. Thrust into team ownership when the Cooper adventure once again failed to deliver, his attempts to maintain the works team's ambitions proved optimistic at best and reckless at worst. With three complete cars at his disposal, Reg may still be able to work enough cash to see the season through on his own, with his son Tim mooted as a potential hire further down the line. Could 1958 be Parnell's last hurrah?

The 1958 Season Preview - Part 5

Cooper Car Company
After three attempts at launching a successful Cooper programme, 1957 was another let-down for fans of the English marque. The operation collapsed once again, prolonged by Reg Parnell taking it over. However, with a new round of financing and different day-to-day management, the Surbiton operation has designed a new car, the T45, that promises renewed competitiveness. Without any convoluted financial schemes accompanying this creation, confidence is much higher from the paddock, and has resulted in the high-profile signing of Mike Hawthorn. Young New Zealander Bruce McLaren has also been approached to compete in the Australian Grand Prix, with an option to compete in further races depending on his performance.

After six years of running his own eponymous Racing Alliance, the Derbyshire garage owner decided to pull out of the sport at the age of 40, but he remains active in the sport as a team owner. Unwilling to call a day on Hampshire Racing Alliance, David sought out the services of promising British Formula 3 driver Henry Taylor, who will be competing both in F1 and F2 as he builds experience.

Scuderia Ugolini
Some would describe the small Italian customer team as rather pointless; an outlet for an ambitious mechanic to exercise more freedom over a team of his own. The combined efforts of Masten Gregory, Jean Behra and Luigi Musso did nothing to dispel this notion, and a dreary 1957 later, the team is now in possession of the oddball B.C.M.A. C-01.EX inventory and beginning manufacture of its own in-house engine, the 1-58. Rather ambitiously signing both Hans Herrmann and André Guelfi, this team's trajectory just may be spectacular in 1958. Which way it will go remains to be seen.

Ecurie Maarsbergen
Carel Godin de Beaufort developed a reputation over his three entries in 1957. Specifically, he developed the reputation of an over-enthusiastic and self-unaware aristocrat with a particular penchant for denting Ferraris. His retirements in Spa and the Nürburgring made Ferrari reluctant to supply him with machinery. However, his seemingly bottomless pit of guilders will ensure he will be on the lookout for opportunities to add a bit of Dutch flavour to the paddock again in 1958.

5th place in the 1957 Rheinland Nürburgring (GT2.0)
8th place in the 1957 24 Hours of Le Mans (first in class, with Ed Hugus)

British Racing Motors
It's odd how a company that manufactures the very competitive P26 engine is also intensely incapable of obtaining anything remotely resembling a good result. Facing tremendous financial troubles after just two rounds of 1957, BRM stayed home for the rest of 1957 aside from a sole DNQ in Spa, instead raking in prize money from the better use Owen made of their engines. This year, with Owen still using BRM power and a rare sale made to the new British Racing Partnership, they may attend another round or two, but all hopes of good results were dead in the water the moment the P25 was launched.

The 1958 Season Preview - Part 6

Automobiles Deutsch & Bonnet
There's little to say about René Bonnet's team. Their four-year-old chassis coupled to a literal Formula 3 engine predictably led to a total inability to qualify for a single race, only occasionally skipping pre-qualifying by sheer number of previous entries. There have not yet been any announced plans for 1958, although they have the funds to enter and two cars in the garage should they so choose. It's unlikely that Bonnet himself will step back in the car, but no confirmation has been received of negotiations with regular driver Berardo Taraschi.

Jonkheer Gijsbert van Loon
The Guidobaldi-Loonmotor has been a staple of the Formula 1 DNPQ list for three seasons now. After a pull-out in early 1956, the Jonkheer came back in earnest in 1957, with Rob Slotemaker and Hans Davids doing their utmost behind the wheel. Not to qualify, that would be too much to ask, but at the very least to improve as more well-rounded citizens of the world. Van Loon all but called a day on his team when he used his funds to prop up his friend Mimmo Dei's Scuderia Centro Sud, but he intends to truly finish his F1 outings with one final typically extravagant entry. Expect this story to end with a distinctly orange-tinted explosion.

Team Lotus
Colin Chapman's highly-promoted arrival in Formula 1 in 1956 turned out...fine, really. Two podiums and 20 points are nothing to be sniffed at, but it didn't meet the expectations Colin himself had set out. Taking a year out in 1957 to design the Lotus 12 seems to have done them some good, as testing rumours indicate the car's high level of performance, while Rob Walker's use of the Lotus 10 provided them with much-needed funds. All the key ingredients are there for a successful return...except on the driver front. The long absence led to little interest from drivers, and only supersub Troy Ruttman agreed to sign, marking the first time since 1953 that the American is set to enter the first race of a season.

Troy Ruttman - 27 - USA
Formula 1
38 entries
37 starts
24 points
2 podiums
2 fastest laps
2 championship Grand Prix victories (1 each in 1951 and 1952)
Sportscars
4th place in the 1951 Carrera Panamericana (with Clay Smith)
AAA/USAC
34 entries
29 starts
4 podiums
2 pole positions
3 wins
AAA championship runner-up in 1952
Winner of the 1957 Race of Two Worlds (heat 3)

British Racing Partnership
Over the winter, Stirling Moss' father Alf and manager Ken Gregory decided they'd set up their own racing team. They assumed Stirling would naturally join them, but he instead decided to opt for proven steady employment in the updated B.C.M.A.. Unprepared for this rejection, Moss and Gregory instead opted to sign Jim Russell, the Formula 3 specialist who has been kicking about British teams for two years gaining experience. Joining him for the British Grand Prix will be another British Formula 3 and Formula 2 driver, the promising Tom Bridger.

Jim Russell - 37 - GBR
Formula 1
10 entries

1956 Oulton Park June race
1957 Sporting Record Trophy Seniors vs. Juniors Handicap
1957 Crystal Palace August race
1957 October Sporting Record Trophy

John Brian Naylor
The Mancunian privateer has been kicking around the British club racing scene for a few years now, and recently made the jump to Formula 2 with decent success. His long-term plans include manufacturing his own chassis, tentatively named the JBW, so he will have to be prudent with his operations in 1958. He has purchased a 1956 Lotus chassis and a 1957 O.S.C.A. engine at discount price, which should allow him to compete in most European events within his budget.

Brian Naylor - 34 - GBR
Formula 1
Nope.
Formula 2
4th place in the 1953 Mid-Cheshire MC F2 race
Sportscars
Winner of the 1956 Leinster Trophy
2nd place in the 1956 Gran Premio di Roma (S1.5)

Is it too late to sign a driver or two on a part time basis for the 1958 season? I know I missed the boat for the full RNG.

Nah, it's never too late. Your penalty is really just missing out on the top drivers.

The 1958 Season Preview - Part Last

Écurie Guillion Bachot
This mysterious entry, despite all nominal pretense of being French in terms of both name and organisation, is based in Stockport and has no true national allegiance based on purchases. The low budget of the operation only allowed for the acquisition of two 1956 Lotus chassis and a single new Ugolini engine. An apparent lack of management direction may be behind the team's absence of driver signings, though they have reportedly been on the lookout for potential hired hands. Any material appearance of this team remains speculative.

Julius Kubinsky
The Czeochoslovakian privateer has been involved in Formula 1 since 1955 (1949, if some are to be believed), and after rebadging any aging Western machinery he could get his hands on in the past, a new strategy has been explored for 1958. Yet again faced with a year without a race behind the Iron Curtain, a source of income was sought with the design of a home-built chassis. None of them have been sold, but it's not too far-fetched to expect at least an entry from the veteran with a suitably Slavic comrade behind the wheel.

Porsche was a big name on my list of teams to slowly introduce in the future. I think I'll start looking into it for 1959.

Connaught wrote:

Connaught will not die, at least after this season, says Ken McAllpine

Rumours have recently surfaced that Connaught are suffering financial issues and that it is planning to leave the championship during the 1958 season have been denied by Team Owner/Manager Ken McAllpine who branded the rumours as "Embarassing" and "Rubbish"

"We are not planning to leave the championship any time soon," he said. "We are quite a professionnal team with good expriences in lower categories but planning to leave the championship during this season would be a huge disgrace, not only to the whole of the team, but to the whole company of Connaught itself."

Then he went on to state that Connaught are currently still on the learning side and he also stated that Connaught could do a little more time to prove themselves they are a team capable of fighting points and even podiums before thinking down afterwards whether to continue on or leave it.

Connaught have yet to score a single point so far, coming up to it's third season running. They have recently downgraded themselves to privateer status which allows them to purchase a brand new OSCA car and a potential second OSCA waiting for rent during the season replacing the older uncompetitive Connaught Type-Bs in a bid to better their game for 1958.

"Since we have an OSCA now in our garage, this should definitely give us the key to move up the field in the races to come", McAllpine said lastly.

Well i don't mind waiting a year and doing it slow-paced this year. I do kinda want to make Ecurie Maarsbergen a budget privateer and sort of design a Porsche Formula 2 car, just for storytelling purposes, if that's allowed?

It's time to enter non-championship races. This year, I'm using them exclusively to try out new game mechanics, so both will be hard capped at 20 cars per race. I will also mandate no more than one car per team per race, unless the lists do not fill up.

Unlike previous such races, any damage will not count, nor will driver or team performance be affected by the race results. However, drivers may still be injured.

The mechanics I will be introducing will be as follows:

-Driver race performance: until now, this has been calculated using an average of race pace, including team and car bonuses. I will be testing ways of removing team and car influence in this without adding too much bother, and it will not require additional input from team owners.
-Race strategy: the current method involves wildly inconsistent lap times from drivers, leading to too much overtaking, blocking and RNGs. I will implement a rudimentary mechanic where you can decide whether each driver is faster at the start or the end of the race, or just leave it unchanged. If you do not specify a strategy, it will be left random.

To make entry list compiling easier, please submit your entries in the following form:
Driver Name (Team Name) - [chassis model] chassis [chassis number], [engine model] engine [engine number]
Strategy: Fast start / Fast end / Random

For example: Consalvo Sanesi (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 801 chassis 1, Ferrari DS50 engine 3

Brief update: as both races will not be held in the same canon time (the Glover Trophy will be held after the Australian Grand Prix), you may enter the same car and/or driver in both races.

I will also ask that you limit your entries to at most two per user, to get a wider range of entries. Thank you.

Autosport wrote:In house Ugolini engine to make debut at VI Glover Trophy

In brave new ground for the small Italian privateer outfit led by Nello Ugolini, their first in-house engine - the Ugolini 1-58 - will break cover for the VI Glover Trophy, in which it will power the dependable O.S.C.A. F156A. Not much is yet known about the engine; it is rumoured to be built on a shoestring budget and designed by Ugolini himself, who has stated the engine is "very powerful". Despite this, the motor racing world will wait with semi-bated breath for the grand unveiling of the engine.

It's against the rules to lend equipment you own to budgetless privateers which you enter.

Thank you!

In that case, Nasif Estefano humbly begs for any old equipment to get him on the grid.

If the rules allow, we could glue together a 'car' for him, with the surprise of not knowing what he will get until the race.

Will give its new T45 its debut at the Glover Trophy Mike Hawthorn Will drive chassis 1 and FPF V Engine 1 and as have no strategy for the race and take it as it comes.
We also inquire whether contracts offered to several drivers have been lost in the post.

ART

Will place an order for an OSCA F158 chassis and an OSCA 1558 Engine

One full cooper T41 + climax engine in return of a T45 in an ideal world. If you can confirm that the T45 chassis is significantly better than the T41 (you can ask for values at Tommy), then you get an Osca (chassis only) on top of it.
