Ecurie Guillion Bachot will sell our Lotus 10 chassis 8 and our BCMA C-01 chassis 1 to collectors to whatever the hell they want to pay for them. Trying to negotiate a price is least of our priorities right now.

The main issue I see here is that you're purchasing engines from somewhere else and passing them off as your own design. You'd either have to get the engines off Bentley or O.S.C.A. every time you build a new one, or get them to relinquish the designs to you.

Well, we won't ever build another engine in this way. On the offchance we get proof of concept, then we'd look into creating a BRP Mk.2

This is also why the Mk.1 is listed as "Bentley-BRP" to acknowledge that we've taken Bentley parts for a BRP design

June 5th 1958, Belgian Grand Prix qualifying

Ferrari's comeback to the forefront of Formula 1 was confirmed with Peter Collins leading a comfortable 1-2 at the Dutch Grand Prix, ahead of Masten Gregory in a revitalised Lotus and John Surtees, saving B.C.M.A.'s proverbial furniture. B.C.M.A.'s Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham have won the last three Belgian Grands Prix, however, and despite a string of recent mechanical failures, the team remains at an advantage when it comes to pure pace. As 37 drivers appear at Spa-Francorchamps, Ferrari's lead is more fragile than it seems.

1. Jim Russell (British Racing Partnership) - Cooper T45 chassis 3, BRM P26 engine 5
2. Honoré Wagner (Honoré Wagner) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 5, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 5

6. Dan Gurney (Rob Walker Racing) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 5, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 6
7. Alan Stacey (Owen Racing Organisation) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 2
8. Jack Fairman (Owen Racing Organisation) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 10, BRM P26 engine 4
9. Jack Brabham (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 1

36. Just-Émile Vernet (Just-Émile Vernet) - Guidobaldi FG01 chassis 1, Mercedes-Benz UM153 engine 10
37. Claude Dubois (Claude Dubois) - Cooper T41 chassis 6, Ferrari DS50 engine 1
38. Jan de Vroom (Jan de Vroom) - Ferrari 801 chassis 1, Ferrari DS50 engine 2

-The main story of the weekend is the continued absence of O.S.C.A. from the paddock. Stricken with grief over Giulio Cabianca's death in France, this is the second race in a row the team has missed, prompting rumours regarding the circumstances surrounding it. Administrative issues? Mechanic dissatisfaction? Who knows?
-As Brian Naylor declines to appear due to financial issues, Stuart Lewis-Evans is free to return to Connaught.
-Following Harry Schell's disappointing failure to qualify in Zandvoort, he is the one replaced by the convalescent José Froilán González at Walker, as Dan Gurney remains in the second car, bolstered by a strong Le Mans showing. Schell instead moves back to Cooper alongside Hawthorn, replacing Musso and Allison.
-Similarly, Maria Teresa de Filippis' DNQ led to her being cut from Owen's line-up, leaving the ever-trusty Stacey and Fairman, the former fresh from leading much of the Dutch Grand Prix.
-Jack Brabham has returned from his injury, boosting B.C.M.A. back to a four-car operation.
-After a string of qualifying fiascos, Australian Grand Prix winner Georges Burggraf has been benched from Alexander Racing Team in favour of Lucien Bianchi, who will drive the team's sole car in Spa.
-The French Loonmotor club have gathered the funds to hire a car for this weekend, driven by René Cotton.
-Strengthened by a surprise podium finish in Zandvoort, Masten Gregory is whisked back from Lotus to Ferrari, where he replaces von Trips and is joined by newly-crowned Le Mans winner Olivier Gendebien. His Lotus spot is filled by Jean Behra, who leaves Voeckler with three entries for the canonical Simon, Manzon and Trintignant.
-Maserati missed the Dutch Grand Prix due to a late entry submission, but no such issues for Spa, as Reg Parnell soldiers on for another race.
-David Hampshire's team returns with the extended grid size of Spa, Henry Taylor back behind the wheel.
-A couple more privateers are entered besides Vernet, Wagner, Davids and Cotton. This time, it's experienced local sportscar drivers: Écurie Nationale Belge's Claude Dubois and the wonderfully-named Jan de Vroom.
-Conversely, notable absentees include Scuderia Ugolini, Loonmotor, Norfolk Engineering and Ecurie Maarsbergen, most of these due to money trouble.

34 grid spots, 37 drivers in the running. This leads to the news everyone wants to hear: no prequalifying session!

O.S.C.A. explains Spa absence

Defending constructors' champions O.S.C.A. are absent from the second consecutive race following Giulio Cabianca's tragic death at Reims.

"Not travelling to the Dutch Grand Prix was our choice. After Giulio's accident, we all needed some time to move on," Piero Taruffi explains. O.S.C.A.s racing director is no longer wheelchair-bound following his accident at Bremgarten four years ago but still struggles with walking. In the wake of the accident he has turned into one of racing's greatest security advocates.

"After the accident, we went back to the factory thinking about how we could make our cars safer without sacrificing performance. We came up with some solutions, but unfortunately, we suffered a few manufacturing delays so we didn't get the cars ready for Spa. We're very grateful to Scuderia Centro Sud for allowing two of our drivers to compete here."

Asked about O.S.C.A.s future prospects, Taruffi was cautiously optimistic.

"This has been a difficult year for us. We've had a lot of personnel changes, including drivers. But we're still a close third behind B.C.M.A. and Ferrari. We think we have the better car, but they've got the better organization, so we'll have to work on that to get back to the very top. But I'm confident we'll get there. Look at Ferrari, they were a lot worse off not long ago, and now they're fighting for the title."

37. René Cotton (Guidobaldi-Loonmotor) - 5:01.73

Zero surprises in terms of who fails to qualify, nor is a B.C.M.A. 1-2 all that unusual. Three stand-out performances from Heinz Melkus, Mike Hawthorn and Henry Taylor, though. Taylor takes Dave Hampshire's private Vanwall to a terrific grid spot in the top 20, Mike Hawthorn puts the Cooper-Climax in a very legitimate 12th position, and the East German Melkus outdoes his usually fast performances by starting the race in the top ten. Conversely, the most disappointing performance is probably that of José Froilán González, who will only start the race from 17th position.

July 6th 1958, Belgian Grand Prix

The start was a muddled affair, though everyone got away cleanly. Shortly after the Raidillon, Ramos was the first victim of the traditional unreliability as his engine failed very prematurely. As the first watch posts began reporting from the other side of the track, it became apparent that the Ferraris would have the early lead, and as the drivers finished their first lap, Umberto Maglioli was leading Onofre Marimón across the line, with Moss, Simon, Brabham and Collins in tow. On the second lap, Simon was out through suspension failure, joined by Jan de Vroom's gearbox. Strategies began to play out, as Dan Gurney rocketed up the order to be in fifth position by the end of the third lap, while Collins dropped down to seventh place. The race was soon reduced to 29 participants due to issues with Alan Stacey's clutch and Robert Manzon's gearbox.

Marimón began to pick up the pace, and on lap 6, Maglioli allowed him into the lead to build up the gap to the pursuing B.C.M.A. duo. The following lap, Dan Gurney's impressive start was curtailed following an oil leak, but most people's thoughts were focused on his compatriot Troy Ruttman. The American lost control when he put a wheel on the grass at Blanchimont and was pitched into a spin towards the cliff face on the left side of the track. The car backed into the cliff and was launched into a cartwheel across the track. Ruttman hobbled out of the car, but collapsed soon afterward, just as an ambulance arrived.

This elevated British Racing Partnership's Jim Russell into a scarcely-believable sixth place, but this didn't last. Russell ran over debris from Ruttman's accident, and promptly suffered a violent puncture at the top of Raidillon on the following lap, causing a spin and his retirement against an earth mound. Olivier Gendebien was the next to retire, as his clutch failed on the tenth lap, followed by Stuart Lewis-Evans with steering issues. As the race reached its halfway point, Marimón and Maglioli still held the top spots, though Moss was slowly catching the Italian, with Brabham in tow and Mike Hawthorn and John Surtees filling out the point-scoring positions. Hawthorn's position wouldn't last, as he retired from that fifth place with gearbox failure. On the same lap, the list of retirements grew to include Roy Salvadori with transmission failure, and Jack Fairman after spending much of the race with only two gears and running in last place.

By lap 17, Stirling Moss had caught the Ferrari of Umberto Maglioli and set the fastest lap of the race as he breezed through into second place. As race leader Marimón began to lose pace and Peter Collins picked up the pace from what was now sixth place, a thrilling end to the race began to profile itself. González was the next to retire, having run out of fuel. This indicated a race-long fuel leak, but it presaged a potential issue for some of the hardest chargers of the race. By lap 20, Brabham had caught and passed Maglioli, while John Surtees and Peter Collins had caught up, sparking a potential six-way battle for the podium between the two leading teams, just as Harry Schell retired from a deeply anonymous 15th position. He was soon joined by Lucien Bianchi (electrical issues) and Reg Parnell (suspension failure).

The battle soon lost Surtees and Maglioli, who were unable to keep up the frenetic pace of Collins, Moss and Brabham. Marimón remained in the lead, though were the chasers to catch up, he would be a real sitting duck. The chasing mob was soon reduced by a third, as Peter Collins' harsh fight back to the front led him to over-drive and run out of fuel with three laps remaining. By this point, Maglioli and Surtees dropped into the clutches of the hard-driving Masten Gregory and the surprising Heinz Melkus. With two laps to go, Gregory and Melkus were in fourth and sixth position, just as the battle for the lead was heating up.

On the final lap, Moss finally caught Marimón and weighed up his options for a race-winning move. On the exit for Stavelot, he saw a gap and darted to the right...only for the expected power to not be there. He too had run out of fuel. Breathing a sigh of relief, Marimón was able to nurse his Ferrari to the finish and take his second Grand Prix victory, Ferrari's third of the season and 16th overall. Jack Brabham came home in second place, unable to catch the Argentine. Leading home a tense battle for the last podium spot, Masten Gregory finished third for the second straight race, ahead of John Surtees and the scarcely-expected Heinz Melkus in the O.S.C.A.. Umberto Maglioli just about stayed in the game long enough to secure the final point, ahead of the firecely-fighting Graham Hill and Maurice Trintignant, the only other two finishers on the lead lap. Moss was classified ninth, though it would do little to console him or B.C.M.A., while Honoré Wagner was left to walk beside him to the pits, suffering a last-lap puncture.
