August 23rd 1958, Portuguese Grand Prix qualifying

Despite not winning the race in Silverstone, it was Peter Collins who took a step closer to his first world title at the British Grand Prix. With none of his rivals from other teams scoring points, he's now 13 points clear of his teammate Onofre Marimón and has 36 points with as many points still to take from the last four races. There's still a chance for B.C.M.A. to take back the advantage, but Jack Brabham can no longer afford to have races like he did in Silverstone. With the perspective of needing a flawless end to the season, 33 drivers will attempt to make their mark on the first Portuguese Grand Prix to be held to Formula One rules.

1. Peter Collins (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 1, Ferrari 143 engine 1
2. Umberto Maglioli (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 4, Ferrari 143 engine 5
3. Masten Gregory (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 2, Ferrari 143 engine 4
4. Onofre Marimón (Scuderia Ferrari) - Ferrari 246 chassis 5, Ferrari 143 engine 3

7. Maurice Trintignant (Écurie Voeckler) - Gordini Type 56/B chassis 3, Gordini G258/B engine 4
8. Jim Russell (British Racing Partnership) - Cooper T45 chassis 3, BRM P26 engine 5

29. Jean Behra (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 11
30. Graham Hill (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 5
31. Jack Brabham (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 1
32. Stirling Moss (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 2, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 2
33. John Surtees (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 Mk. II chassis 3, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern B engine 3
34. Duncan Hamilton (B.C.M.A.) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 2, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 4

-As the Northwestern European season comes to a close, British Racing Partnership reverts to a single car for Jim Russell.
-Brian Naylor unsurprisingly does not make the trip to Portugal, leaving Dan Gurney free to return to Rob Walker's roster. Accordingly, Redmond Gallagher takes his Scuderia Centro Sud place back as Consalvo Sanesi returns to the sidelines.
-Similarly to BRP, Owen Racing Organisation go back to their usual two cars for Stacey and Fairman as Maria Teresa de Filippis is expected to return for Monza in some capacity.
-Cooper's experiment with four entries in Silverstone didn't end well, prompting the team to leave Allison and Burgess in the UK. Once again, Hawthorn and McLaren will be their two drivers.
-After entering three cars per race since their return to competition, O.S.C.A. will field a fourth car for Juan Manuel Fangio for the Portuguese Grand Prix.
-While Wolfgang von Trips takes the weekend away from Formula One, the second works Lotus is taken over by Jean Behra once again.
-As usual, a flurry of local private entrants have arrived for the circuit. 24-year-old Mario de Araujo Cabral is one of Portugal's brightest up-and-coming drivers, whereas 50-year-old Casimiro de Oliveira is looking for one last good race before retiring. Joining them are two Spanish blasts from the past: textile heirs Alberto Puig Palau and Enrique Tintoré have not raced in twelve and six years respectively, but had the money to give it a whirl in hired cars.
-The move to Southern Europe means a great deal of teams haven't made the trip, including Bachot, Connaught, Hampshire and the gaggle of Guidobaldi and DB entrants. Maserati provided a car for Reg Parnell to make the trip, but the British driver-owner ultimately decided against appearing on the outskirts of Lisbon.

As nine drivers will fail to qualify for this race, no prequalifying session is required.

33. Casimiro de Oliveira (Cooper-Climax) - 2:24.40

After some promising results in 1957, Jo Bonnier needed a break this year, and boy did he get one! Formula One's first Swedish driver is also the first Swede to take pole position, and the first this season for O.S.C.A. with a stunning lap to outpace three Ferraris. Meanwhile, B.C.M.A. faced recurring technical issues, leading to a commensurate loss of track time and a heavy disadvantage for the race. In their place, the extremely impressive González and Stacey will start the Portuguese Grand Prix from the top ten, while good laps from Phil Hill, Roy Salvadori, Bruce McLaren, Dan Gurney and Jim Russell sees the midfielders make the grid.

At the back, aside from the four unlikely local private entrants, it's two thirds of the Lotus team that disappoints. Nürburgring hero André Guelfi and Jack Fairman both also failed to make the cut and will watch the race from the sidelines.

August 24th 1958, Portuguese Grand Prix

Bonnier held on to the lead for the first lap, followed by Collins, González, Ramos and Moss. As in Silverstone, the B.C.M.A. drivers started strongly but were held up by Peter Collins' trademark lack of early race pace. Stirling Moss' string of bad luck continued as his engine failed on the third lap, leaving Bonnier to lead Ramos, Volonterio, Collins, González and Brabham. The Australian was very much on the move, and he soon passed González and Collins to take fourth place. Evidently he didn't want a repeat of his Silverstone fiasco. Moss at least had the blessed relief of not being the only driver whose machinery succumbed to the heat, as McLaren's Climax engine also expired. From then on, clouds engulfed the sky and the temperature thankfully decreased.

Masten Gregory was next to retire, his suspension failing on the undulating parkland circuit. While B.C.M.A. gained ground and Ramos began to catch Bonnier to challenge for the race lead, Phil Hill's gearbox failed, soon followed by Mike Hawthorn's clutch. On lap 24, Jack Brabham passed Ottorino Volonterio to break up the O.S.C.A. 1-2-3. Conversely, Ferrari's day was going as bad as could be as Marimón pulled over with an oil leak, leaving Maglioli and Collins mired in the midfield and unable to pass slower cars. At the front, Ramos caught Bonnier on lap 27 and made a clinical move to take the lead at the first attempt. Could he win two in a row? At the very least Collins was unlikely to provide opposition, as he was now mired in twelfth position and unable to pass anyone.

As González retired from a promising race at the halfway point, the leading O.S.C.A. duo was leading with a small and stable gap between both drivers, Brabham not yet finding the pace to substantially make up the gap. Collins' issues turned out to be caused by fading brakes, and the championship leader eventually called it a day on lap 35. A few laps later, it was Redmond Gallagher's gearbox that failed. At this point, Jack Brabham was beginning to catch Bonnier, while Surtees and Hamilton were looking for ways past Volonterio. Surtees eventually found a way, but Hamilton remained behind the Swiss driver until the problem solved itself on lap 50 as Volonterio's transmission gave up the ghost. André Simon would have inherited sixth place, but the Gordini's gearbox failed on the very next lap.

As the race wound down, little movement was seen. The fast-charging Fangio tripped up on backmarkers and couldn't make up enough time, while Jim Russell suffered from an electrical failure. Duncan Hamilton passed John Surtees for fourth place, while Umberto Maglioli held a safe sixth place until his steering failed five laps from the end of the race. Ramos became the first man to win two races in a row since Jack Brabham in 1956, ahead of Bonnier, Brabham (barely staying in the championship race), Hamilton and Surtees. The battle for the final point raged late, but Alan Stacey managed to just about stay ahead of Roy Salvadori.

I'm pretty sure I've badly missed the boat but:

Jim Russell (British Racing Partnership) - Cooper T45 chassis 3, BRM P26 engine 5 (Fast start)

Luigi Piotti (Scuderia Arzani-Volpini) - Any spare Italian machinery at all (Fast start)

I missed this sign-up time because of two uni deadlines on consecutive days. If I could be pardoned, just for these two regular entries (BRP's final one of the season, and Arzani-Volpini's annual Monza jaunt) I would greatly appreciate it.

September 6th 1958, Italian Grand Prix qualifying

The Portuguese Grand Prix sure helped to revitalise the championship races, as O.S.C.A. secured a 1-2 finish to get back within striking distance of B.C.M.A. and Ferrari in the constructors' race, while B.C.M.A.'s podium brought them closer to Ferrari as well. Ramos secured his second win in a row, launching him to second place in the drivers' championship a mere nine points adrift from Peter Collins. With three races remaining and eight drivers still in the race, it's time for the year's fastest race. An unusually low (though very welcome) 37 cars have turned up to the Monza roval for this year's Italian Grand Prix.

34. Mike Hawthorn (Cooper Car Company) - Cooper T45 chassis 4, Climax FPF V engine 1

38. Heinz Melkus (MSG Köthen) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 8, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 12

-As is traditional, Ferrari have brought even more cars to this race. On top of the regular Collins, Maglioli, Marimón and Gregory, a further two cars have been provided for Wolfgang von Trips and and Phil Hill. Left out from the line-up, Olivier Gendebien and Jean Behra will be driving the Lotuses alongside Graham Hill.
-To cap the European season with their home race, Scuderia Centro Sud have brought out a third car for the trio of Guelfi, Sanesi and Gallagher. They'll be hoping for a good points finish to cap the year.
-Thanks to the wide base of Loonmotor appreciators in France, René Cotton has managed to appear in Monza thanks to a club member from Nice lending his garage as a base.
-To give track time to the local heroine, Owen Racing Organisation has left Jack Fairman to tend to board meetings at his tooling business while Maria Teresa de Filippis joins Alan Stacey.
-Also for the sole reason of it being their home race, Maserati finally get a valid entry for Reg Parnell. Surely they won't be around for much longer, so they may as well race at home.
-Similarly, Cooper have replaced the increasingly promising Bruce McLaren for Luigi Musso, who scored a point here two years ago.
-After several races of absence, Alexander Racing Team are back with yet another baffling line-up. Former Scuderia Adriatica and Maserati driver Gerino Gerini is driving an O.S.C.A., DB hand Berardo Taraschi will drive a Vanwall and Swiss hill climb specialist Harry Zweifel has been given an Alfa Romeo.
-After missing the German, British and Portuguese Grands Prix, M.S.G. Köthen and Heinz Melkus are back for one more race in the O.S.C.A.
-As well as an unusual absence of local one-off entrants, this race is marked by the lack of both the British Racing Partnership and Hampshire Racing Alliance. Both of them planned to enter, but ultimately left it too late. Arzani-Volpini also planned to enter a car for Luigi Piotti, but this failed to materialise.

Collins and Brabham both set the same time at the top of the time sheets, but Collins crossed the line just before Brabham and therefore takes his fourth pole position of the season. The Brit will have more back-up come race day, though Brabham can count on Moss with Surtees and Hamilton outside the top 10. Noteworthy performances from the likes of Gerini and Taraschi, the latter making his first start. Parnell, Zweifel and Cotton's failures to qualifying were only logical, taking into account the advanced age of their machinery.
