Naoki Yamamoto and Nirei Fukuzumi

The two Mugen drivers are more than happy to renew for the works Honda outfit.

Antonio Felix da Costa

1-90 Kamaha
91-100 Dedicates full-time to EC.

Result: 3. da Costa will travel to Japan for 2019 with Mori's outfit.

Takuya Izawa

Izawa is happy to renew with Dandelion, his Honda backing helping.

Alex Palou

Palou has two teams going after him; Team LeMans and Dandelion. He prefers LeMans due to his experience and their credentials, but Dandelion does has Honda backing.

1-65 Team LeMans
66-100 Dandelion Racing

Result: 21. Palou returns to LeMans once again, rejecting Honda temptations in the process.

Bertrand Baguette

Baguette is now in PES, but he has received an offer with Dandelion for a return to Super Formula. Last time it wasn't that good, but with better equipment, he might fare better. Honda might also push for him.

1-70 Dandelion Racing
71-100 PES

Result: 30. Baguette is back on the train.

Nobuharu Matsushita

Nobuharu Matsushita has an offer between the promising squad of Super Hanamura Intensity Team, or go for perennial backmarkers B-MAX Racing Team. Not much of a choice.

1-85 Super Hanamura Intensity Team
86-100 B-MAX Racing Team

Result: 50. Matsushita makes his SF debut on rookie squad S.H.I.T.

Ye Hongli

Ye Hongli, a driver for B-MAX's Chinese squad, has been offered a promotion into their Super Formula squad, no brainer really.

1-99 B-MAX Racing Team
100 Goes to China
Result: 12. Hongli doesn't hesitate much into the promotion, as he is now China's Super Formula first driver.

Hiroaki Ishiura

Hiroaki Ishiura is a rather aging driver and hesitates, but he still feels he has some more to give.

1-85 Cerumo/INGING
86-100 Dedicates full-time to PES

Result: 17. Ishiura is happy to renew his contract.

Hiroki Otsu

1-95 Super Hanamura Intensity Team
96-100 PES and All-Japan F3

Result: 43. Otsu is quite happy to debut in 2019 for the rookie squad shite.

Kazuki Nakajima and Ritomo Miyata

Kazuki Nakajima is quite glad to be renewing his contract with TOM'S, and Miyata in particular is in a state of ecstasy at being with the top SF team.

Kazuya Oshima

Oshima had a possible renewal on the table with LeMans. BUT. Due to his Toyota backing and LeMans' signing with Honda, he was prohibited from renewing, and he as well wasn't pleased with LeMans newest signing.

Koudai Tsukakoshi

Real Racing are offering a renewal to Tsukakoshi, a Honda-backed driver. With the news that LeMans, a Honda-powered team that lost a Toyota-backed driver, it might be time to strike in the heart however, and given that LeMans has much better credentials and crew than Real Racing...

1-70 Real Racing
71-100 Waits for LeMans

Result: 97! - Tsukakoshi has decided to wait and sit for LeMans...

Toshiki Oyu

Oyu, an F4 driver from the HFDP, has been offered a seat to be promoted to Real Racing. He has a bit of cold feet with such a harsh jump however...

1-55 Real Racing
56-100 All-Japan Formula Three

Result: 21 - I mean, why not?

Yuhi Sekiguchi

Sekiguchi's rather angry at Nissan right now. They have dropped him to Kondo. He however is happy to go along with the punches, and show what he that he is made of... to an extent.

1-65 Kondo Racing
66-100 Waits for other offers and cuts off the Nissan ties

Result: 91! - Sekiguchi's had enough of Nissan, and has decided to cut off all ties with the company. Sekiguchi will now not sign for Impul or Kondo, and has been removed as an option from the NDDP.

James Rossiter

Rossiter is a long-time driver for Kondo... a renewal has been made? What's not to like here?

1-90 Kondo Racing
91-100 Focus on PES

Result: 52 - Rossiter renews for Kondo.

Koki Saga

Koki Saga's been offered a renewal from Le Beausset. Despite this renewal being on the table for months now, his age and the poor perfomance of Le Beausset all play a factor on him hesitating quite a bit...

1-80 Le Beausset
81-100 PES

Result: 87. Koki Saga puts an end to his stint in Super Formula.

Matt Solomon

Matt Solomon has impressed many with some of his F1 perfomances, and Le Beausset seems to have caught wind of this, as he is now on their shopping list.

1-95 Le Beausset
96-100 Racing in China

Result: 58. Solomon heads over to Japan in 2019.

Andre Lotterer

Lotterer's quite angry. After winning the 2018 championship, only a Nakajima offer. He might as well retire at this point.

1-10 Nakajima
11-100 EC

Result: 48. With a title on his belt at his final season, Andre Lotterer has decided to retire from Super Formula.

Heikki Kovalainen

Heikki has been offered a return to his roots at Nakajima. Despite the reputation at Nakajima, the offer itself is rather intriguing...

1-75 Nakajima Racing
76-100 PES

Result: 72! - A rather close decision with his SARD principals, but he was allowed after all.

Daisuke Nakajima

Daisuke Nakajima has no problems renewing with daddy's team.

Super Formula, Driver Bids, Part Deux

Mitsunori Takaboshi

After a lackluster 2018, Takaboshi has been offered a renewal. Feeling somewhat unfairly treated by the staff at Kondo over de Oliveira, he is understandibly a bit sour. However, with no other options and the pressure of Nissan, he has a decision to make...

1-70 Kondo
71-100 PES

Result: 33. After a bit of skepctism. Takaboshi decides to take the chance.

Sena Sakaguchi

The Honda-backed driver has been offered a move into Super Formula. Already in the know of many of Real Racing's staff thanks to their involvement in HFDP's F3 effort - he feels far more confident than with any other team. However, jumping the gun at this point of his career might be something he regrets...

1-75 Real Racing
76-100 AJF3

Result: 11 - Sakaguchi doesn't hesitate much before signing onto Real for 2019.

Yuji Kunimoto

Kunimoto has been offered a seat at SF, from a least expected source; Tochigi Le Beausset. He promptly laughs, before somewhat considering the offer given the opportunity...

1-20 Le Beausset
21-100 PES

Result: 79 - Actually, Kunimoto snaps in two.

Kohei Hirate

Another Toyota driver with a Le Beausset offer, this one however, considers it a bit more given his out-of-loopness with the open-wheel scene.

1-30 Le Beausset
31-100 PES

Result: 27! - To everyone's surprise, Hirate comes back to SF, starting afresh.

Yuhi Sekiguchi

Sekiguchi has only received an offer from B-MAX. While he has fond memories back from the AJF3 days, nostalgia can't sell an offer...

1-45 B-MAX Racing Team
46-100 Waits

Result: 61 - Sekiguchi has decided to wait for a better offer, else focusing entirely on PES.

Takuma Sato

Being 42, Sato doesn't consider the offer, specially coming from LeMans, and not Mugen or Dandelion.

1-10 LeMans
11-100 "hehehe, funny one"

Result: 89 - "what's next?"

Anton de Pasquale

de Pasquale had a taster of open-wheelers with a less than stellar F1 one-off. Afterwards, he continued with his Supercars career. However, LeMans are offering him a new chance to rejuvenate this career...

1-55 LeMans
56-100 Supercars

Result: 45 - de Pasquale signs for LeMans as their second driver.

Koudai Tsukakoshi

Tsukakoshi is sad and dissapointed. He had an excellent opportunity, and they chose a mediocre driver over him. Now, all that's left is a B-MAX bid. Jumping from one bad team to another one is something he didn't want.

1-20 B-MAX Racing Team
21-100 PES

Result: 71 - Tsukakoshi has decided to give up any opportunities of a SF seat... for now at least.

Takashi Kogure

Kogure's been offered a renewal to B-MAX. He would be more than happy to continue with the team for another year.

1-85 B-MAX Racing Team
86-100 PES

Result: 4 - A nobrainer.

And with that, we're all setup for 2019. Keep an eye...

After signing with Le Mans in PES, Heikki Kovalainen has been sacked with immediate effect due to breach of contract. Nakajima will therefore like to offer Ollie Rowland or Alex Brundle the seat instead

Oliver Rowland

Rowland's been offered to replace Kovalainen, after the latter's contract was terminated. Rowland does feel this is his best shot at getting into the big leagues and testing his skill, but he is a bit stunned by the short notice.

1-90 Nakajima
91-100 BTCC

Result: 46. Rowland's been convinced by the offer made by Satoru Nakajima, and will take a trip eastwards for 2019.

Yaname Grand Prix of Suzuka

Venue: Suzuka Circuit
Length: 5,807 km

Report by Autosport Japan
PREVIEW:

Hello, and welcome all to the first race of the 2019 Super Formula calendar! Many new faces are amongst us, and many changes have happened during the off-season, most remarkably the change from the ageing SF14 to the new SF19, which is set to significantly improve racing and speed. Many during the pre-season had quite a bit of trouble getting used to this new car and everyone's still not fully in known of all of it's tricks - we will have to see how this plays out on the long-term.

The drivers have seen a significant overhaul, most notably, the retirement of 2018 champion Andre Lotterer to focus on his European committments. In we have a significant number of rookies, more so than ever in Super Formula since a long time. Ritomo Miyata is the most notable one, driving for TOM'S, but there are also others, like the Real Racing pair of Sena Sakaguchi and Toshiki Oyu and Hiroki Otsu, not to mention the many many Gaijins coming from abroad, in order to partake in this great series.

QUALIFYING:

Despite the heavy difference in Q1, Q2 and Q3 proved to be very exciting and close affairs. Otsu got eliminated by less than 0.1 seconds after a last-minute lap by Bertrand Baguette on fresh tyres, on a very impressing rookie qualifying. Sena Sakaguchi, another rookie, had it similar with Daisuke Nakajima, who escaped to Q2 by less than 0.007 seconds, with a 1:30.053 being set by Daisuke Nakajima.

Constant midfield changes happened during Q2, with Matsushita and Takaboshi (later De Pasquale) exchanging times.

Q3 proved to be relatively close competition until Nakajima, with fresh tyres, set a hot lap of 1:29.119, beating by 0.5 seconds the time of temporary pole sitter Nirei Fukuzumi, who had a 1:29.660. Later, Hiroaki Ishiura and Naoki Yamamoto would attempt to grab pole position, but all they could do is close down the gap to 0.3 seconds.
Nakajima's teammate, the rookie Ritomo Miyata, put on a rather modest showing at Q3, and focused more on learning the circuit once he had done his hot lap of 1:29.820.

RACE:

Climate predictions of a rain at the Suzuka proved truthful in Sunday morning, where it started to downpour. Despite many thinking the race was gonna be delayed, the rain eased down and by midday it was very light. Despite this, the track was very slippery, and many are worried of the 130R.

As the lights went off, Nakajima lost his lead to Yamamoto, and Fukuzumi dropped off the top 8. Despite losing the lead, Nakajima was quick to get it back in the same lap, and Fukuzumi quickly came back to the top 8 after a nice overtake to Takuya Izawa.

Kazuki continued to feel the pain of the wet conditions, with a lock-up at Dunlop and later lost his FW in a small skirmish off 130R. It is clear Nakajima was prepared for dry conditions; short-sightness seems to be the main factor that led to his many mistakes in the race.

Amongst other errors, the Yokohama tyres proved to not withstand wet conditions particularly well, with Hiroaki Ishiura - shortly after his amazing overtake of his teammate Carter Simpson - suffered a puncture and retired immediately. In the same lap, Nirei Fukuzumi's nightmare race continued with the same problem, but he had the luck of making it to the pits.

Honda engines were also pretty unreliable; three Hondas retired during the race. All of these were exitting the pitlane, perhaps the Honda has issues with lower speeds?

130R took it's toll on the drivers, there can be no doubt. The corner was the worst hit by the rain, and it was very slippery as a result, making overtakes almost suicidal. Antonio Felix da Costa, Kohei Hirate and Alex Palou all fell to the 130R nightmare corner.

The pitstops then normalized the race somewhat. Amongst the most notable blunder was a mistake by the Mugen crew, who took a while to screw the rear left tyre correctly. This cost them dearly, and Nakajima jumped to the lead as a result.

While the slippery 130R was figured out by most drivers at the end of the race, the Spoon saw some drivers at the end of it due some hilarities. Most notably, Nirei Fukuzumi's nightmare race continued with a terrible spin in the Spoon.

Probably the most interesting of strategies comes from Daisuke Nakajima, who chose to make a very late pitstop. This didn't work out, and he got stuck in the back as a result. Other notable strategies include the undercut of Jann Mardenborough, which would put him in a decent, if quiet, 4th place.

Nakajima however, would end up in the top spot, after a fantastic showing by both his crew and himself given the conditions he was thrown in.

Completing the podium was the angry Naoki Yamamato, and the rookie Ritomo Miyata, in an excellent wet weather display from the rookie. In the dying parts of the race, Hiroki Otsu overtook de Pasquale to take 7th, and Takaboshi overtook Rowland to take 10th.

The season's first safety car after Mardenborough's accident mixed up the field. The biggest winner was definitely Anton de Pasquale, who after starting on the last row finished in second place.
After the race, Barii Mori had enough of Antonio Felix da Costa (who ran in 2nd before going off track with 9 laps to go and having to pit for repairs) and promptly sacked him from Kamaha. He will be replaced by Tomo Kazama at the final round in Sepang.
