1978 Aurora F1: Pre-season Auction

The Simulator

Grand Prix 2. Imagine that.

The Cars

March 751s won't be in infinite supply, I will be adopting an Alt-50s-like model where there will be a limited number of cars in circulation, but with free trading. With the exception of constructors like BRM, no new cars will be built, so you'll have to go fishing around in skips behind the March and McLaren factories. Engines will be in plentiful supply, though, and you'll have a full range of choices from the works-spec Cosworth DFV to the second-hand Cosworth DFV.

In addition, if you are buying from outside the UK, there will be an added transportation cost on the equipment.

The Drivers

Real-life or fictional, just make sure it actually makes sense to enter them in an F1 race. For example, don't enter Mike Thackwell this year. That's just stupid and you should feel bad. Drivers may be signed to a paying contract or to a modest paid contract. The £25,000 per season minimum in the World Championship will not apply here, but don't expect good RNG odds for £1 contracts...

The Teams

One car minimum, two cars maximum. Teams that entered into the 1977 ShellSport International Series will have the option of continuing with whatever equipment they still possessed at the end of that year, or selling it on to buy more up to date machinery. Teams from that year's F5000 category will be forced to buy new engines for 1978.

The Race Weekend

There will be some qualifying and some racing. The races will generally be in the 160-190 km range. See here for the specific distances.

The Points System

Not the same as the World Championship! Check this out:

1 - 20 pts
2 - 15 pts
3 - 12 pts
4 - 10 pts
5 - 8 pts
6 - 6 pts
7 - 4 pts
8 - 3 pts
9 - 2 pts
10 - 1 pt
Fastest Lap - 2 pts

Crazy!

As we have a three year-old, mediocre chassis and very little money (at least not anywhere near enough to run the whole World Championship) Hesketh would be interested in running our cars in Aurora F1 instead this year alongside occasional forays into championship events, as in real-life.

I mistakenly overlooked Hesketh when I was putting together the entry list, so I'll just put them down as confirmed.

March will supply their old chassis to interested teams, but they won't personally take part in the series.

I've decided to remove Wheatcroft Racing from the entry list, as Tom Wheatcroft's primary focus at this point in history would have been the upkeep of the newly re-opened Donington Park (I had him mixed up with Tom Walkinshaw when I drew up the entry list).

In recompense, I will offer Normal32 first choice of any other team entered into this series that isn't an Alt-77 refugee, when the time comes.

EDIT: And I've discovered the Mike Tyrrell thing. Yeah, Wheatcroft's definitely out.

I appreciate that it was a legitimate trophy back in the day but are we seriously keeping the "Dave Lee Travis Trophy"?
Slightly problematic imo.

History can never be undone, only learned from. If it's what I think you mean, it's not an issue until 1995 anyway.

Indeed. I'm not entirely comfortable with it either, but we do need to look at it in its appropriate historical context and I feel that changing the race name would be too revisionist.

Well, considering John Rafael has been AWOL for quite some time that looks to be the most responses I'm likely to get from the Alt-77 teams.

The next phase... won't begin for a little while. Certain aspects of the rulebook still need to be ironed out at present and I need to put together a list of teams that will be put up for grabs. For now you can just continue registering your interest. :)

Let's get into the signups now. Because I like to see some continuity with the past I've given a few teams with former ShellSport experience the chance to continue with whatever they ran in 1977. You can either race it or sell it when the trading window opens. Please be aware that you are not limited to the teams below and can enter whomever you like as long as you can justify why they are racing in the UK.

Link just in case.

You have until November 24, at 17:00 GMT to make your claims!

Let's see, you get... *rummages through the Aurora goodie bag* a free driver contract for the very skilled Brian Henton... and... a pair of Marches you already own with the Cossie V8s to match... and lastly... *checks the Alt-78 budgets* no money?! We can't have that, now. Here is a cheque for £250,000. Be sure to drop into the bank Monday morning.

EDIT: Apparently I lack any up-to-date info on British F1 Racing. Could you tell me the year those Cosworths were built?

Those would be two of the finest 1976 spec Ford Cosowrths.

I'll go for Adrian Russell, so far I'm going for the safe option if possible.

Re: 1978 Aurora F1: Trade window opening soon

Post by Bobby Doorknobs »

The window for entries is closed for now, but there will be further opportunities for anyone interested in running a team as the season progresses.

Next up you will all be expected to sort out your equipment before we get into the driver signing process. Unfortunately, I have been rather busy of late and I still need to complete... quite a few things actually: Chassis performance, a complete inventory for the used car lot (old cars from 1976 & 1977 in particular) and settling on final prices that will strike a balance between affordability and not being so dirt cheap as to give teams like Hesketh and LEC an unfair budgetary advantage over other World Championship teams in a similar situation.

So yeah, watch this space, I guess.

While I continue to fuss over chassis performance and things I thought now would be a good time to open up the driver signing window. Unlike the world championship, there is no minimum wage. Obviously the more money you put on the table, the more likely it is for the driver in question to want to drive for you, so it's a bit like the new Alt-58 system. Pay driver rates, on the other hand, will remain as they are in the Alt-78 spreadsheet.

A note for World Championship teams (LEC, Hesketh, etc.): You don't actually have to do anything. Your drivers are all taken care of (North Star excepted, of course).

Here are the lineups as they currently look: https://formularejects.com/wiki/1978_Al ... One_season

You have until December 11th, 00:00 GMT to make your picks. Any questions, please ask.

If it makes it easier for you, you can even fill out this form:

Code: Select all

Team Name:

Driver #1
Name:
DEC: (Fictional drivers only)
Wage: (Optional, per race or per season, please state)
Contract Length: (Max 1 year)

Driver #2 (optional)
Name:
DEC: (Fictional drivers only)
Wage: (Optional, per race or per season, please state)
Contract Length: (Max 1 year)
