1978 South African Grand Prix - Race

Post by pasta_maldonado »

1978 South African Grand Prix - Qualifying
Image
Image

Jody Scheckter would take the second Ferrari pole in a row, but more importantly for the South African, his first pole on home turf and his best chance yet of securing victory. Lotus were in better form than Argentina, with Brabham and Williams not far behind. Further back, there were plenty of achievements - Pironi taking Tyrrell's best grid position in two years with 9th, and Piercarlo Ghinzani taking Everest's best start with 17th. Migault and Jarier were terrible, and Heyer and Neve again failed to make the cut.

1978 South African Grand Prix - Race

Results

Image
Fastest Lap: James Hunt - 1:09.453
Drive of the race: Piercarlo Ghinzani - taking Everest's first point was no easy feat
Reject of the race: Mario Andretti, Elio de Angelis, Jody Scheckter - choke city

Summary
Lead: Villeneuve would get involved in an accident, and join the hordes of retirements at the start of the race. Scheckter and Nurmester would hold 1st and 2nd, with a battle between Andretti, Jones, Depailler and Hunt behind. Nurmester stopped early and looked to have got the jump, with Scheckter in traffic, but failed to pump the right laps in, leaving Scheckter in the lead. Scheckter would spin before his second pitstop, requiring a new front wing and forcing him out of contention for the win. Andretti now had the lead, but would spin out of the race with 10 laps to go, leaving James Hunt in the lead.
Midfield: Cars were dropping like flies throughout the race, resulting in most of the mdifield failing to finish. de Angelis choked away a guaranteed point, Pironi drove a good race, Kagan and Regazzoni also choked and Sneva was let down by his engine.
Backmarkers: There was a titanic scrap throughout the race. Ghinzani had lost 6th to a recovering Regazzoni, but was elevated back into the points thanks to Andretti. Tom Pryce almost chased him down.

Ratimgs
1) James Hunt - 8/10 - Drove well, but was surprised to inherit the lead
2) Jody Scheckter - 4/10 - Would've won the race if he hadn't choked. The home race curse continues.
3) Patrick Depailler - 7/10 - Fairly anonymous, but finds himself in the lead of the drivers championship. Take that, Enzo.
4) Didier Pironi - 8/10 - Another strong drive from the Frenchman
5) Clay Regazzoni - 5/10 - Found himself recovering from an early, self induced spin.
6) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 10/10 - Desperate to atone for his Argentine disappointment. Brilliant drive
7) Tom Pryce - 9/10 - A handful more laps and he would have overtaken Ghinzani
8) Leonhard von Gottorp - 6/10 - Heavy attrition is the only reason he finished this high
9) Vittorio Brambilla - 4/10 - Ditto
10) Rolf Stommelen - 5/10 - Dependable, no thrills drive to bring the ATS home
11) Francois Migault - 0/10 - To finish last is an insult.
12†) Mario Andretti - 1/10 - Mario, please. You're the world champion for God's sake.
Ret) Elio de Angelis - 1/10 - Chokeio de Angelis. Lazy spin.
Ret) Thomas Nurmester - 7/10 - The first half of the race was brilliant, but faded halfway through
Ret) Robert Kagan - 1/10 - Rookie mistake
Ret) Riccardo Patrese - 5/10 - Anonymous
Ret) Rene Arnoux - 6/10 - Another spirited drive has netted him a contract extension
Ret) Alan Jones - 5/10 - Didn't threaten the lead at all
Ret) Tom Sneva - 7/10 - Let down by engine
Ret) Jacques Laffite - 0/10 - Locked up on Sneva's oil and headed straight into the gravel.
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 5/10 - Meh
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jarier - 2/10 - Couldn't match de Angelis, and now has one race left on his contract
Ret) John Watson - 5/10 - Retired before the race really got going
Ret) Ronnie Peterson - 5/10 - Ditto
Ret) Bobby Rahal - 5/10 - Ditto (same lap as Peterson)
Ret) Gilles Villeneuve - 5/10 - Ditto
DNQ) Hans Heyer - 2/10 - struggled with the Argentine heat
DNQ) Patrick Neve - 2/10 - Struggled with everything
DNPQ) Keke Rosberg - 4/10 - Arrows failed to get a good setup
DNPQ) Gianfranco Brancatelli - 4/10 - Ditto.
DNPQ) Danny Ongais - 5/10 - Could've done better
DNPQ) Mike Mosley - 4/10 Didn't out-pre-qualify Danny Ongais

Can I ask how long it'll be before the next race, or more to the point how long before Spain is run? It'll be quite a while before I have the proper time to start running Aurora races and I feel like things could get messy with budgets and especially injuries once we get into the European season and the likes of Hesketh and de Villota enter the frame.

Team Lotus have finally actually decided to do something, and are gonna go with Goodyear tyres until season's end.

Suppliers wise, we're gonna go with |British Petroleum, mainly because nice stickers but also because dat reliability boi.

Finally, in an unprecedented show of competence by the new management, we're also going for some upgrades.

Instead of upgrades Ligier thinks future-wise it's better to produce a new CG chassis now and then perform upgrades on them.

1978 Toyota United States West Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying

1) Renault 2:49.232
2) Arrows-Ford 2:49.757
3) Interscope-Ford 2:49.926
4) Minardi-Ford 2:50.198
5) ATS-Ford 2:51.862
6) March-Ford 2:54.150 (Gilmore)
7) Hernandez-Ford 2:54.994

Renault again top the session, and Arrows join them for the second time this season after re-discovering some form. Progressing to the main game for the first time this season is Interscope, with Mike Moseley looking good to make his first career start. Everest again fail to make the cut, and again it's Piercarlo Ghinzani not living up to his end of the bargain - Riccardo Patrese again setting a competitive time. Rolf Stommelen was the fastest of the ATS duo, but ultimately the team slump to their first DNPQ of the season but only their second all-time DNPQ, with Gilmore and Hernandez joining them.

1978 Toyota United States West Grand Prix - Qualifying and R

Post by pasta_maldonado »

Qualifying
Image

The crowds assembled along the Long Beach waterfront were greeted with the first non-Ferrari pole of the season, courtesy of Alan Jones. Ferrari still made the front row, with Scheckter in second position, ahead of both Lotii. The new Ligier JS7 appeared to be working well for Laffite, who qualified 9th, whilst Ronnie Peterson delivered a superb lap to start 13th. Further back, all of the pre-qualifiers made the grid, with the indignity of failing to qualify falling to Patrick Neve (again) and Vittorio Brambilla, who failed to make the grid for the first time in the last 2 seasons.

Fastest Lap: Jody Scheckter - 1:25.191
Drive of the race: Jody Scheckter - dominating first win of 1978
Reject of the race: Brabham - admittedly, they were stuck behind in the Renault train, but failed to make any progress.

Summary
Lead: Scheckter leapt into the lead at the start, and only relinquished the lead during pitstops. Mario Andretti tried, but ultimately had to settle for second.
Midfield: Both Renaults jumped to 8th and 9th at the start, holding up most of the field. This simultaneously ruined the races of many and set up a race-long scrap for 6th between de Angelis and Pironi, but it would be the Italian who held on to take Alfa Romeo's first points as a works team since 1955.
Backmarkers: At the back of the field, Rahal recieved damage that ruined a strong race, and Ongais and von Gottorp were just slow.

Ratings
1) Jody Scheckter - 10/10 - Didn't put a foot wrong
2) Mario Andretti - 8/10 - Couldn't challenge for the win
3) Thomas Nurmester - 7/10 - will be relieved at first points of the year
4) Alan Jones - 6/10 - More points will help in his title bid
5) Gilles Villeneuve - 5/10 - Didn't look like a front-runner
6) Elio de Angelis - 9/10 - Brilliant race to take advantage of the start
7) Didier Pironi - 8/10 - Just missed out on points
8) Jacques Laffite - 6/10 - Was on of the first to break the Renault roadblock
9) Tom Sneva - 7/10 - Best drive thus far
10) Keke Rosberg - 8/10 - On the right day, the Arrows may just be capable of points
11) James Hunt - 4/10 - From hero to zero. Could not escape the midfield.
12) Robert Kagan - 6/10 - Solid
13) Tom Pryce - 8/10 - Continues to out-drive the March.
14) Francois Migault - 3/10 - Continues to under-drive the Ligier.
15) John Watson - 3/10 - Couldn't escape the midfield
16) Jean-Pierre Jarier - 3/10 - Didn't give Alfa any reason to keep him.
17) Bobby Rahal - 6/10 - FW damage ruined best race thus far
18) Danny Ongais - 6/10 - Struggled with unwilling Interscope
19) Leonhard von Gottorp - 2/10 - Poor.
Ret) Clay Regazzoni - 4/10 - Struggled with the McLaren
Ret) Ronnie Peterson - 7/10 - On course for a top 10
Ret) Gianfranco Brancatelli - 5/10 - meh
Ret) Rene Arnoux - 8/10 - Typical Renault failure
Ret) Patrick Depailler - 6/10 - Rear wing damage proved terminal
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 8/10 - Ditto
Ret) Mike Mosley - 7/10 - Was on course for a solid result
DNQ) Vittorio Brambilla - 0/10 - First DNQ in 2 years
DNQ) Patrick Neve - 2/10 - Well, at least he's consistent.
DNPQ) Riccardo Patrese - 7/10 - Held back again
DNPQ) Rolf Stommelen - 6/10 - ATS didn't like the track.
DNPQ) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 4/10 - Again held the team back.
DNPQ) Hans Heyer - 3/10 - Not Heyer's finest hour
DNPQ) Jerry Sneva - 8/10 - Not much more could be done in the old March
DNPQ) George Snider - 8/10 - Ditto
DNPQ) Hecotr Luis Gradassi - 9/10 - The driver was willing, but the car was not.
DNPQ) Osvaldo Lopez - 6/10 - See above.

Enter the inaugural Budweiser Grand Prix of Cleveland!

Post by pasta_maldonado »

Non-Championship Race 1 - Budweiser Grand Prix of Cleveland

America may play host to two World Championship Grands Prix, but that may not be enough. With American interest in the likes of Andretti and Sneva, along with Formula One's desire to etablish a strong foothold in America, the idea of a potential Midwestern US Grand Prix has been touted. The circuit is located at the waterfront Burke Lakefront airport, with the wide runways offering the potential for plenty of passing.

Travel fees will be £30,000 for any team which attended the United States West Grand Prix., and Interscope and Gilmore have already been entered into the event. There is thus 11 team entries remaining.

Drivers currently contracted will race for their teams, with no extra wage or RNG needed. Teams may run other drivers - normal driver signing rules will apply, but any driver hired for a non-championship race does not need to be paid a wage for the event. Additionally, pay drivers will not pay money for the event.

My mistake, I'd missed that! That has been noted and the budgets updated.

Entries for the British Grand Prix are now full! Please check the entry lists on the spreadsheets to see which races still have slots.

Shadow and North Star are yet to enter any races.

Qualifying
Image

The Lotii had the advantage in qualifying for a front row lockout, with Villeneuve in third and Hunt in fourth. Cheever and Mears were on the pace of their team-mates, but Giacomo Agostini wasn't, starting down in 10th position. Price Cobb also impressed, but as expected, the Hernandezes rounded out the field.

Race

Fastest Lap: Mario Andretti 1:18.395

Ratings
1) Thomas Nurmester - 10/10 - Had the superior strategy, but coupled it with great pace to win the race
2) Mario Andretti - 9/10 - Traffic around pitstops cost him
3) Gilles Villeneuve - 7/10 - A much improved performance from the Canadian today
4) Rick Mears - 8/10 - Had better pace at times than Pironi
5) Tom Sneva - 7/10 - Decent
6) George Snider - 6/10 - Seemed to have the measure of Jerry Sneva
7) Jerry Sneva - 5/10 - Ran well, slower than team-mate
8) Rene Arnoux - 5/10 - Race ruined by early race contact, which forced a rear wing replacement
9†) Bobby Rahal - 8/10 - Standout performance from the American, was running with Sneva before late-race failure
10†) Giacomo Agostini - -100/10 - Incredibly unsportsman like conduct to wipe Cheever out of the race at the first corner. His retirement with 6 laps to go saved him from an embarrassing DSQ.
Ret) Danny Ongais - 3/10 - Didn't make any impact on the race
Ret) Hector Gradassi - 5/10 - A finish would've been nice for Hernandez
Ret) Didier Pironi - 5/10 - Got caught out at the start and spent his race paying for it
Ret) Osvaldo Lopez - 5/10 - Was running ahead of Gradassi
Ret) Price Cobb - 8/10 - Outpaced Stommelen
Ret) Rolf Stommelen - 6/10 - Dependable
Ret) James Hunt - 5/10 - Contact with Bobby Rahal ruined race before it could begin
Ret) Eddie Cheever - 5/10 - Did not complete a lap thanks to Agostini.

Delightful, it would appear we're inching closer and closer back towards the front of the pack. Great pace all round from the cars and the drivers, hopefully we can keep this up.

1978 Spanish Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying

Post by pasta_maldonado »

Pre-Qualifying
Image

1) Arrows-Ford 2:27.660
2) Renault 2:28.025
3) Minardi-Ford 2:29.064
4) ATS-Ford 2:29.258
5) Interscope-Ford 2:29.421
6) March-Ford 2:30.869 (Rebaque)
7) March-Ford 2:31.612 (Centro Asegurador)
8) LEC-Ford 2:34.658
9) March-Ford 2:35.865 (Merzario)
10) Shadow-Ford 2:37.538
11) Dywa-Renzo 2:52.511

Arrows bounce back from failing to qualifying at Long Beach by taking the top spot in pre-qualifying on combined times, with Keke Robserg setting the individual pace followed closely by Gianfranco Brancatelli. Renault will have to be content with second as they head into the Spanish Grand Prix yet to finish a race, with Minardi stealing the last qualifying slot by less than 2 tenths from ATS.

The Spanish Grand Prix saw the privateer contingent take part in Formula 1 for the first time in 1978, but none looked capable of qualifying throughout the session. Rebaque set the pace on their Formula One debut, 1.2 seconds behind Interscope on combined times, but Brett Lunger managed to set a best lap time only 2 tenths slower than Mike Mosley's Interscope. LEC appear to have been left standing over the off-season, collapsing to over 7 seconds behind Arrows and barely ahead of a Merzario team that struggled to get their drivers out in clear air. Also making his Formula One debut today was Silvio Bachot, the obscure Belgian managing to out-pre-qualify both Arturo Merzario (who struggled with space) and team-mate Freddy Kottulinsky - although there is little to smile about, as the shadow is over 4 seconds off the pace and Kottulinsky is one of the slowest drivers currently competing in Formula One. Despite bringing a new version of the Renzo DFV engine, Dywa took up their customary place at the bottom of the timesheets, 14 seconds adrift of Shadow.

At least we're the best of the privateers... :pantano:

But seriously, if Hector didn't get held up then we might have done a bit better. Here's hoping our engine will come into better use at Zolder.

Plus if anyone wants to sack their/needs a driver than Silvio will happily fill in for them.

Following pre-qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, scrutineers were unable to examine the fuel used by Interscope due to there being insufficient fuel in the tank of both cars. A fine was avoided by the team when they submitted fuel samples, which were deemed acceptable by the scrutineer. Multiple reports of both Interscopes leaking some form of liquid on their way back to the pits during the session were unable to be corroborated.

1978 Spanish Grand Prix - Qualifying
Image

Mario Andretti took the first pole position of the season for Lotus, but championship leader Jody Scheckter lined up alongside him in second position. A bad qualifying session for Brabham saw them lock out the 4th row of the grid, ahead of Regazzoni and an impressive Fittipaldi making his first start since his injury in the Dutch Grand Prix last year. Keke Rosberg wold line up an impressive 13th for Arrrows, Laffite could only muster 16th with Migault 23rd after a bad qualifying session for Ligier. At the back of the grid, von Gottorp and Brancatelli would occupy the last row of the grid, with Vittorio Brambilla and Patrick Neve again failing to qualify.

DNPQ) Mike Mosley - 2/10 - See Ongais
DNPQ) Brett Lunger - 6/10 - Better pace than Penske outings, but Rebaque are off the pace
DNPQ) Gabriel Chateau - 6/10 - Convincingly outperformed di Villota, but old Marches are now long in the tooth
DNPQ) Hector Rebaque - 4/10 - Self run team will not be long for the world if more pace cannot be found
DNPQ) Emilio di Villota - 5/10 - Slower than Chateau, but will be disappointed Asegurador
DNPQ) Beppe Gabbiani - 4/10 - Meh
DNPQ) Gijs van Lennep - 3/10 - He's a fast Gijser, but the LEC has not aged well
DNPQ) Ian Scheckter - 2/10 - His brother started on the front row of the grid, he didn't even come close to pre-qualifying
DNPQ) Silvio Bachot - 3/10 - Obscure Belgian outperformed Kottulinsky. But that's not an achievement.
DNPQ) Arturo Merzario - 5/10 - Didn't get a clean lap in.
DNPQ) Freddy Kottulinsky - 2/10 - Gazpacho soup was hotter than his hot lap.
DNPQ) Arsenio Matarazzo - 2/10 - Outperforming Renzo Zorzi on debut is impressive. Bottom of pre-qualifying aficionados will be watching his performance eagerly.
DNPQ) Renzo Zorzi - 1/10 - Was he genuinely outpaced, or did Matarazzo's alleged mafia connections have something to do with it?

Right, thanks to our bleh performance Rebaque is going to invest in a Tier D non ground-effect chassis (as that's the best one we can afford right now).
