Re: 2020 NAF4: Biscione

Post by CaptainGetz12 »

Due to issues popping up in real life I will extend the deadline to this Sunday.

Biscione, please post your second driver choice for the Mid-Season test before then or I will have Lemke test alone that day.

20) David Crow +1.438
21) Charlotte Morin +1.482
22) Alexandra Mohnhaupt +1.506

The first session took place on a hot day, resulting in worse performance for the field due to the tires performing at too high a temperature. Stelio Vulcain took the fastest time in the final minutes of the session, shaving less then one tenth of a second off of Annakpok Pootoogook's time.

Day 2
1) Craig Ortega 1:26.194
2) Charles Morin +0.612

20) Arjun Patel +2.086
21) David Crow +2.113
22) Charlotte Morin +2.396

Day 2 would see Peak Motorsport Canada test two new drivers, Diamond Cunningham and Royce Walton. The session would see a sudden shower halfway through the session, with many of the leading drivers not being able to set a fast lap before the rain came, resulting in larger gaps between best times. As a result Craig Ortega took a convincing fastest time for the day.

Stelio Vulcain got the lead by passing Gilles Nouveau into turn 1 at the start, but Craig Ortega gained the victory over Stelio Vulcain by attrition; the American kept putting pressure on Vulcain, who wore out his tires defending the lead, allowing Ortega to pass him easily in the closing laps.

Lucas Thompson retired from the race on lap 14, blaming issues with his gearbox.

Ret) Brandon Lemke Fuel System
Ret) José Sierra Loose Wheel
Ret) Milania Hale Suspension

Fastest Lap: Dexter Black 1:18.006

Penalties: Nicholas d'Orlando is given 3 penalty points for causing an avoidable collision. He struck Sierra's car on lap 16 as it was being attached to the crane to be removed from the course at Turn 4.

The race would see many battles for position, most notably the battle for 3rd between Stelio Vulcain and Tommi Gore. Sierra passed Ortega on the back straight on lap 1 and never looked back, but would suffer heartbreak when he retired late in the race.

The race would see many retirements in the closing laps. Hale would retire from a suspension failure on Lap 4. Sierra would retire from the lead of the race then his car lost a wheel going into turn 4. As his car was being extracted d'Orlando struck the back-left quarter of it in a rather dangerous situation.

Pootoogook and Lemke would each develop electrical issues on the final 2 laps. The former would return to the pits to fix it easily, while Lemke's fuel system issue would force him to retire halfway through the final lap.

Ret) Milania Hale Fuel System
Ret) Sandy Gray Engine

Fastest Lap: Théo Christen 1:32.092

Penalties: None

Ortega started on the front row, but had a very slow start and ended up in the lower points. Gray retired on lap 4 when her engine started to puff smoke, the car lasting half a lap before it gave up. Charles Morin complained about a sticky throttle on lap 9, so he made a pitstop and his crew managed to loosen it. Milania Hale would retire on the final lap due to an issue with her car's fuel system.

Nouveau would dominate the race from turn 1, while the rest of the field saw frequent battles for position. Eves and Pootoogook would spend the race scrapping over 5th place, while Charlotte Morin fought off Lemke and Robbins for her first points finish in Formula 4. Barnet looked to challenge Nouveau for the win early on, but he would slide down the order by the halfway mark.

Teammates Thompson and Connors collided on lap 2, which lead to a tense argument after the race. After the team manager sorted them out the stewards decided to rate the collision as a racing incident.

Several drivers scored their first points of the season if not their Formula 4 careers, most notably Mohnhaupt for the first time in one and a half seasons.

And to think that now I am leading the championship after the races at my home country of Canada, with 2 victories to my name, is just crazy. I can guarantee however that I will be pushing to the absolute maximum of my driving abilities for the rest of the year, to win more races and hopefully that way eventually win the championship.

Fastest Lap: Craig Ortega 1:39.945

Penalties: None

Sierra would take his first Formula 4 win (and his first points finish in F4) in a dominant fashion from turn 1, the Mexican nursing the car home to avoid a repeat of his near-win retirement in Toronto. The race would see many less-seen points finishers fighting over the points. Ortega managed to fight through the field only to retire on the final lap because of a puncture, while his teammate Nouveau struggled in the lower points, finally passing Barnet on the last run through the chicane. Vulcain ended up caught out of the points, underestimating the pace of the mid-pack drivers.

The race would see fierce battles for position across the grid, with Gore fighting to hold 10th. Gray passed him on the final lap however, Gore only keeping a point because of Ortega's retirement.

Oh and by the way I’m happy to offer Brazilian karter Felipe Ribeiro, who is a member of the new Redline Driver Development Program, to anyone looking for a mid-season driver replacement

Peak would be interested in hiring Ribeiro to replace Milania Hale, who has been disappointing thus far to say the least :|

North American F4's first race in Quebec would see Iturra lead the race to his maiden victory from turn 1, with Gray not managing to close the gap to lower than a third of a second. Lemke fought valiantly to reach 3rd and hold off an angry Nouveau to take his first F4 podium. Nouveau would fight with Christen in the closing laps, with Nouveau taking 4th to extend his championship lead whilst Vulcain and Ortega struggled to stay in the points.

The race would have tight racing in several groups, the course's narrow width leaving few places to overtake. Felipe Ribeiro would tussle for 21st, a rather underwhelming debut compared to the driver he replaced.

The race saw a real separation of the field into two sections, showing who had pace on the streets of Trois-Rivieres and who did not. Nouveau butted heads with Christen, but by the end he build a sizable gap and was flying through the circuit. Lemke clawed his way up from the bad start to another podum, while Iturra and Hawking had a thrilling battle for the mid points. Iturra did dive on Black in an agressive move on lap 4, but no damage came to either driver.

Despite the few fierce battles there was little overtaking throughout the field, the street circuit providing few feasible places to pass.

Current Penalty Points
Craig Ortega 3
Pedro Ramírez 3
Nicholas d'Orlando 3

(Thanks to Gertrand Bachot for updating the standings before I came back to my laptop)

Gilles Nouveau leads the the championship with 132 points, 24 more than Théo Christen. Christen would need at least one win if he wants to win the championship. Craig Ortega and Stelio Vulcain remain mathematically possible to win the title, but they would need Nouveau and Christen to have horrendous weekends for that to happen. Going into the season finale it is Nouveau's title to lose.

Brian Gosselin isn't very impressed with the good results this season and claims he may try again next season if any seats are available. Failing it, he'll try and seek some other series or even sadly, retire from racing.

Championship leader Gilles Nouveau laughs at Gosslelin for attempting to play the victim in a situation that is completely of his own doing.

The points standings after Trois-Rivières are here.

Qualifying would see a small smatter of rain on this hot day, disrupting the laps of many drivers. Nouveau suffered the most, with his dominant pace negated by spots of rain, and as such the championship leader would start the race in 13th.

Turn 1 would see a mad scramble for position, leaving many drivers either surging up the field or wallowing in the back. Ortega would have a healthy lead over Gray and Christen for the race, with Christen fighting hard to keep his championship hope alive with a 2nd place finish. Robbins would finally put in a points finish with a 5th place, the American claiming he was sweating the second he got on the starting grid, fretting to bring the car home in the top 10. Nouveau had an atrocious start to compound his low starting position, but he clawed his way up the field to barely claim 10th place. Gosselin defended hard all race, but lost 10th place to Nouveau on the final lap.

Brandon Lemke fought well in the mid points all race, but he had to pit on lap 8 to fix a loose wheel.

- - - - - - -

Nouveau's lackluster points finish today leaves him only 3 points ahead of Christen in the points standings. Ortega's full points haul on Saturday put him 11 points behind his teammate. Vulcain is out of the running for the Drivers' Title, but the top 3 remain very close, leading to what can be a very intense season finale on Sunday.

25) Charlotte Morin +1:06.929
26) Edson Iturra +1:14.803

Fastest Lap: Stelio Vulcain 2:13.236

Penalties: Nicholas d'Orlando is given 3 penalty points for causing an avoidable collision. On lap 2 d'Orlando collided with Edson Iturra, taking a wider line up the esses that scooped Iturra's car onto 2 wheels, the rough landing knocking off Iturra's front wing.

With Ortega's pole position and Christen's mid-points starting place it looked like Ortega was the last chance to topple Nouveau come race time. The race would see Ortega lead a short distance ahead of his teammate, but Nouveau held off several contenders to keep 2nd place, sealing the championship for the Canadian. Christen scrapped with the middle points positions, mainly with Dexter Black and the two Quemex cars.

The back of the field would see very close racing, with several instances of cars going three-wide down the main straight over the course of the race.

Iturra's points hopes were dashed when d'Orlando put his wing underneath the Chilean's car, pushing him up and shattering Iturra's front wing, forcing Iturra to the back due to his pitstop to get a replacement wing.

Final Standings

Congratulations to Gilles Nouveau of Brian Andore Racing, your 2020 North American Formula 4 Champion!

(Thank you all for sticking with me for the 2020 season, being a nail-biter to the end. I will be on less often during this off-season, but I will be making changes in preparation for the 2021 season, should the rest of the canon catch up. Thank you to all who helped keep the wiki page up to date and to those who added a bit of fluff to the storyline. Heres to 2021!)

OOC: Thought it would be better storyline wise if Felipe returned to his home championship full-time next season. I will instead offer American Pat Jones (not related to Mike) to any interested team.

A suggestion for Ribeiro, we also run an F4 series based in South America known simply as the South American F4 Championship. I’m not sure if the current season is still running or it has finished but we do have a thread somewhere and it’s worth checking it out.

Yeah sorry if I didn’t make it clear but that’s the series I’m referencing putting Ribeiro in and he was at the mid-season test in that series.
