RejectSport wrote:Dutch Noble Purchases Theodore

Prince Theodore Racing Team owner Teddy Yip has announced that his ownership of the team has been bought out less than 18 months since bringing back the historic team to the F1 grid. Despite a strong showing in the team's first season in its new guise in 2019, claiming an impressive 4th in the WCC, a lack of focus on their 2020 challenger has seen the team struggle mightily this year. Having scored zero points this year, and with little hope of that changing, there were some question marks over the team's management, however nothing this drastic was expected so soon into the team's second F1 tenure.

It is perhaps fitting, however, that as a returning name to the sport now departs, another old F1 name makes it's reappearance - although perhaps one even more obscure than Theodore. The new team owner is Jonkheer Katja Mahalia van Loon, whose great-uncle, Gijsbert van Loon, operated the eccentric Loonmotor outfit on an on-and-off basis through the 1950s.

Although Katja van Loon declined to make a press statement herself, sources close to her indicate that she does not expect to visit the F1 paddock on a regular basis through 2020, instead focusing on a "restructuring effort of the team". It is believed that this revolves around moving the teams operations to the Netherlands, to an as-yet unknown location, as well as securing backing from other potential stakeholders.

www.f1rumours.net wrote:Internal Shake-Up at Toyota

According to a number of statements on the team's social media, Benson & Hedges Silver Toyota Motorsports have changed a number of roles within the team. According to a source within the parent company, these moves were made in response to the so-far disappointing comeback season of the Japanese manufacturer and are supposed to increase long-term competitiveness.

Whilst Toyota chief executive officer Akio Toyoda was not expecting great results this season, especially since the team is using an outdated chassis which even lacks the active suspension used by all F1 teams right now, the team had the internal target of being secure within the top 8 in its debut season, which the team currently is not meeting, sitting ninth in the championship.

It is worth noting that the aerodynamics department, which has been fully dedicated to building the 2021 chassis, has been unaffected by these moves, so clearly the branches of the team dealing with the hydrogen fuel cell powertrain and actual race management are being optimized, most likely with the explicit target of becoming a serious contender sooner rather than later.

www.f1rumours.net wrote:2022 Rule Changes Confirmed

In a rule meeting, the FIA has confirmed a major packet of aerodynamic rule changes which will come into force at the start of the 2022 season. These far-reaching rule changes will mean that cars will look extremely different to any F1 car before. The most obviously noticeable change is the permission of a third wing on each side of the nosecone, a more radical and complex version of the aerodynamic concept used by many teams in the late 00s.

Other changes include the reversal of the rule that banned so-called "X-Wings" at the end of the 90s and increasing the maximum width of the rear wing. However, movable rear and front wing plates will be banned, instead making place for a Drag Reduction System, which has seen successful use in DTM, which allows moving the rear wing plate for a number of times during the race if trailing a car ahead by less than a second.

A number of safety features are also included in the rule package. All cars must be equipped with an aeroscreen which significantly reduces the risk of loose parts hitting drivers after accidents. The device will be tested in mid-season testing and in the Friday free practices of the Indian Grand Prix. Furthermore, the Virtual Safety Car which use was planned for the 2020 season but was aborted after unsuccessful testing will be making its debut in 2022.

www.f1rumours.net wrote:Lunardi Looking Forward to Championship Fight Between Precision and Ferrari

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the current Formula One Management chairman Achille Lunardi talked about Ferrari's short-term future in the sport. In it, he claimed that Ferrari are already beginning to look like contenders again and must be discussed when talking about future world championship seasons and trophies.

He commented that he was looking forward to seeing the Italian team coming up with ways to take down Precision Motorsport, whom he called the "gold standard" of F1 at the moment. When asked about Caterham's role, he merely commented that they were a "good team", but refused to entertain questions about their "their".

The Italian also commented about the Italian Grand Prix, calling it a "marquee event". In a bold statement, he confirmed that after departing for the AutoReject World Series and causing a legal battle over the "Italian Grand Prix" trademark, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza will "never hold a Formula One race ever again."

www.f1rumours.net wrote:FOM and Tencent Agree to 24.3 Billion Exclusive Web Streaming Deal

In a press statement, Formula One Management and Chinese internet company Tencent Holdings Limited announced that they have reached an agreement to a deal that will see FOM grant Tencent exclusive rights to web streaming Formula One races, hosting all 23 races of the F1 season on Tencent Video as well as an archive of all Formula One races in this millennium.

This deal will start in 2021 and end in 2036 with a total value of €24,300,000,000. FOM chairman Achille Lunardi is quoted in the press statement as saying that this agreement "will launch Formula One into the digital age and provide a pleasant viewing experience for web users across the globe". Tencent in turn stresses their happiness with expanding their video service with the "premier racing series in the world".

What is quite interesting is that the press release, as part of the services mentioned, explicitly states that "Friday and Saturday qualifying" are part of the offered product even though there has been no Friday qualifying session since the two-day qualifying system was abandoned after the end of the 2002 Formula One season. It is expected that that description will be clarified in a few months.

www.f1rumours.net wrote:Vettel Frustrated with Season, Sport and New Engines

After being taken out of the Dutch Grand Prix in an accident caused by and involving Diego Álvarez Torrente, 2017 and 2018 world's champion Sebastian Vettel lashed out against the sport in an interview on a Dutch TV show. He claimed that he is "unhappy with the development of the sport" and thinks that F1 is currently "not headed in the right way", hoping for "things to get better sooner rather than later".

Vettel has had a miserable start to the 2020 season, only scoring 20 points and visiting the pole once in the nine races that have been held so far. The German record race winner is still waiting for his first win, still running the risk of having his third career season without a win, having failed to win races in 2007 and 2014, both seasons he did not compete in all races of the year.

Whilst he refused to address his opinion on the new hydrogen fuel cell power units, he justified that decision with not wanting "to make the boss unhappy", which can be read as a damnation of the current power unit regulation. However, Vettel had also positive things to say, saying that he is "still very happy" at Caterham, furthermore praising his rookie teammate Lando Norris as a "talented nice young star".

www.f1rumours.net wrote:Portimao Circuit to Host F1 Race from 2022

According to Portugese newspapers, Formula One Management and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve have signed a 13-year contract beginning in 2022. The Portugese Grand Prix is set to return this season at the Autódromo do Estoril, however it was always believed that that arrangement was never intended to last long and merely was to serve to reintroduce the sport to Portuguese live audiences.

Apparentely, the Algarve circuit did not outright receive a deal to run the race from 2020 onwards because it is expected to expand its floodlights and add more light sources as well. Formula One management is looking to turn Portugal into one leg of a night race triple header featuring the current night races at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola.

Upper management of Formula One Management is looking to turn Formula One races into special events to increase the value of the sport as an entertainment product. Night races are highly useful in that regard because they make for great visuals and allow regions where normal European starting times are a hindrance for TV ratings to experience F1 at more reasonable times.

RejectSport wrote:ANALYSIS: Bianchi about to become F1's "$50 million man"?

Early in the season, Precision team owner Jeroen Krautmeir was confident he'd get 'once in a generation' driver Jules Bianchi signed by the summer break. However, the market has evolved since then, and it is now looking more likely to be a long, drawn-out process involving several key stakeholders at Precision, AMG, Trilux and the Bianchi camps. And that was all before other teams, most notably Ferrari, entered the picture.

Initial figures of 3 years worth $20 million had been thrown around with the superstar driver, but the emerging threat that Ferrari could steal Precision's lead driver from under their noses has lead to a frantic bidding war behind closed doors. It is now believed that a long-term deal worth upwards of $8 million a year has been tabled to Bianchi's management in order to ward off any potential challengers. Some analysts however expect the final figure to hover around the total contract being worth around $50 million, numbers which have not been seen since the height of the manufacturer-era in the mid-2000s.

These negotiations are not happening in isolation however. The managers of several top drivers including Sebastian Vettel, Pastor Maldonado and Dave Cassidy have contracts expiring either this year or next that will be watching these negotiations with great interest. It's widely expected that regardless of the final numbers of Bianchi's next contract, it'd be expected to drive up the value of several key drivers in the coming seasons.

RejectSport wrote:Melrose: Current generation of drivers "Boring"

Red Bull Racing's Daniel Melrose launched a surprise attack on his rivals earlier today, stating that he believed none of the current generation of drivers were able to fill the role as the 'face' of the sport, and that the sport would soon face a problem trying to market itself to new fans.

The former multiple-time world champion has been no stranger to controversy over the years, spanning from his career-long feud with James James Davies, to his highly-publicised defection to the then-Formula One Rejects World Race Series in 2010, his personal struggles off-track which led to multiple sackings, and his eventual return to winning form this season after many years in the wilderness.

"I've been involved in this sport for near-enough 25 years now, and I will say that this current generation of drivers are some of the most talented I have ever raced against," said Melrose after finishing 4th in the British Grand Prix. "I will say this however. For all their upside on-track, they don't have anywhere near the same showmanship or charisma off-track. I'd even argue that many of them would have been considered boring when I was racing back in BMW Sauber and not made it as far as they have today."

When asked about his achievements this season and what his aspirations were, the 34 year-old, who turns 35 during the Jordan Grand Prix weekend, was bullish about his chances.

"We've proven that we are not to be taken lightly this year, and this is by far the happiest I've been at the wheel of a racecar since my time in BMW Sauber all those years ago. People are saying this is Jules' title to lose, but we're just getting started. Argentina was no fluke and France was no fluke, and we've had other results go begging in places like Cleveland and Finland. We are in it to win it all this year and I know the team will throw everything they can to make this car as good as it can possibly be for me."

Melrose heads into the Jordan race 4th in the standings, behind only Bianchi, Artem Markelov and Lando Norris heading into the midpoint of the season, which is the highest he has been in the standings since his championship-winning year of 2010.

After consecutive podiums at the German Grand Prix, Red Bull's Daniel Melrose has declared that 2020 is the year for him and the team to challenge for the championship. However, the Australian-German also stated that if the team doesn't maximise their opportunities this year, it'd be more difficult for them to compete in future years.

"I truly believe that we can climb the mountain this year" said Melrose after the race. "Precision will be tough to beat but we've outscored Jules (Bianchi, current championship leader) over the past four races. However, it's now or never for Red Bull, as we really need to ramp up our development program to keep up. The guys at the shop have been working hard day and night, but having more resources at our disposal and the ability to use them would be most ideal."

When asked about his future, Melrose remained tight-lipped about his future prospects.

"I'm focusing on getting this year sorted first before worrying about anything down the track. We'll cross that bridge when we get there."

In a press release, Formula One Management has announced that chairman Achille Lunardi will leave his post on August 1. The press release announced that Lunardi will be leaving FOM for "personal reasons" and wishes him well for his future endeavours. Interviews for his replacement have already begun and FOM are looking to announce their new chairman "very soon".

According to sources within the involved teams, major factory outfits have voiced complaints over Lunardi's public behaviour and alleged that Lunardi hurt the image of the sport. Even though Lunardi was a key player in securing the streaming deal with Tencent Holdings Limited, it's rumoured that the combined pressure of said teams made continuing to employ him a potential risk.

President honours himself in circuit renaming
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been accused of being increasingly authoritarian and autocratic over the course of his presidency, including numerous re-writings of the Turkish constitution arguably towards his favour, and his brutal response to the 2016 coup d'etat, has today announced the renaming of the Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey in his name, in a spectacular ceremony, which involved numerous spectators and camera crews. The consequences of this recent event is that from now, any future racing events held at the circuit will be held with the circuit being called the "Recep Tayyip Erdogan Circuit".

New FOM Chairman Appointed

Formula One Management have announced their new chairman today, after existing chairman Achille Lunardi tendered his resignation recently, despite having been in his position for less than a year. Lunardi officially resigned for ‘personal reasons’, although it is believed that his resignation was the result of numerous teams responding negatively to his comments, especially the Caterham team, whose owners the Commonwealth Group are largely believed to have used their extensive influence in the sport to have forced Lunardi from his position as FOM chairman.

From the official F1 website, the press release states: “Formula One Management is pleased to announce that the replacement for our outgoing chairman Achille Lunardi is none other than 1997 Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. Jacques has very strong and clear views on what he believes is the right choice for the direction the sport will go in in the future, and his vast experience and proven pedigree at the top of the field will prove him to be the best man for the job. We are looking forward to what he plans for the future.”

Villeneuve himself is presently unable to comment on the decision, but is reportedly “delighted” with the announcement and is “immensely looking forward” to his new job at the top of Formula One.

The FIA has published a provisional 2021 F1 calendar for people to have a look at. It sees a large shakeup, with the addition of the Saudi Arabian and Vietnamese Grands Prix; the return of the Monaco Grand Prix after 8 years; and the moving of the French Grand Prix back to Paul Ricard - the British Grand Prix to Birmingham - the German Grand Prix to Berlin Tempelhof Airport - and the Japanese Grand Prix to Sugo. This season sees the loss of the Paris Grand Prix - organisers were unable to justify a second race in France, the Finnish Grand Prix - from low attendance, and the Jordan Grand Prix - unable to compete with large neighbour Saudi Arabia.

Autosport wrote:Villeneuve: Torrente should be fired
FOM Chairman Jacques Villeneuve has hit out at Precision driver Diego Álvarez Torrente today, claiming he was "useless", and "should be fired".

Villeneuve made these comments after the Hungarian Grand Prix, where despite locking out the front row, Precision only managed to salvage a 3rd place, with Torrente finishing behind both Caterhams in the race.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italy, Villeneuve said: "If it was this time last season I would be more considerate, as I know the transition between F1 and the former ARWS is quite high. But this year there are no excuses. The cars this year are slower than last year's, and with Torrente finishing behind both Caterhams despite having a clearly superior car and qualifying ahead of them, then I think his time is up. He is useless, as proved at the Nürburgring and here in Hungary, and honestly he should be fired for his stupidity. [Esteban Ocon] would be a much better replacement for him and is much more deserving of a seat. Just look at his performance in that race at Cyrpus. That is a driver worthy of a top seat. Not Torrente."

Torrente and Precision are yet to comment on the matter.

Red Bull's new team principal Pierre Waché wants his future lineups to reflect his own journey to the top seat in the next few seasons. "Although we have a experienced lineup for now - it's key that we are looking to lower formulae in terms of identifying our next World Champion in the next four or five years."
