2019 FIA Prototype Challenge [Quicksim]

Post by Klon »

Indeed we are doing this. Despite my horrible track record at actually running series, I will try to revive this series and lead it to the path it was always meant to take.

Rule changes in comparison to 2018:
There will be no more points for pole position and fastest lap.
All races will run for four hours.
Teams may enter either one or three cars.
Only the best-placed car counts for the team championship, but teams can only earn points for the team championship if they finish in the top 10.
Qualifying consists of a one-lap shootout, where the order in the season opener is randomised; afterwards, the qualifying order is based on the last results (the winner starts qualifying at the next race first, followed by the second-placed driver etc.)
All drivers must start their first stint on the tyre they used in the one-lap shootout.

Calendar
4 Hours of Cyprus- Akrotiri Bay International Circuit - 7 April
4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps - Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps - 12 May
4 Hours of Navarra - Circuito de Navarra - 7 July
4 Hours of Austria - Red Bull Ring - 28 July
4 Hours of Japan - Twin Ring Motegi - 25 August

Vic Sunset wishes to prototypes again having had a pretty good 2018. If Mont Blanc are running again he offers his services to them. If not, he's up for any team.

Any chance Fuji could be moved forward/back a week? It clashes with EC 6H Indy (let's hope that finishes...) and it's the only EC clash all season.

I can move it back a week, but I honestly do not see EC ever continuing, otherwise I wouldn't have opened this thread.

2019 FIA Prototype Challenge [Quicksim]

Post by Klon »

KANE LIVES!

Well, kinda ... yes, I do plan on running this series after all. However, I have made a number of changes, since I long-term want this series to mainly focus on engine development and manufacturer relations. You can see the changes in the edited OP. If I am hurting any of your plans, I am sorry, but bear with me for the greater fun down the road, unless my changes totally unacceptable to you.

FIA Prototype Challenge Press Report wrote:Llosa Beats Ahdikari to Victory

The season opener of the 2019 FIA Prototype Challenge at the Akrotiri Bay International Circuit was an exciting event that saw a late twist which enabled Ricardo Llosa to beat Asim Adhikari and take victory in the first PC outing by Garage 59 McLaren Racing International after taking the lead in the last round of pitstops and then running away from the Nepalese driver, He went on to win with an advantage of a mere 18.1 seconds after driving almost 990 km.

The first outing of the new one-lap qualifying saw Team Bentley and Adhikari take pole positon ahead of the two M-TEC Hondas. Private entry Scuderia Vittore impressed, as Deividas Lukauskis hauled his car to fourth on the grid. Nissan Motorsports finished qualifying in 17th, 19th and 22nd respectively. They explained this to the media with the desire to not overuse the tyres they need to use in the first stint, though they admitted that the Cyprus circuit is not their best venue.

That decision was proved right on race day as Honda dropped down the order whilst Nissan used late stops in the early phase to haul themselves into contention for the lower points. Reliability was generally good all around, only Jenson Button had a terminal technical issues in form of an engine blow-up. Whilst BORC had an issue that cost them more than ten minutes in repairs, and Vic Sunset had to spend an eternity in the pitlane because of problems with their wheel rims, the rest got on relatively well.

17-year old Kayra Clifton amazed in her prototype debut, starting 12th and finishing in the points. In turn, prominent drivers like Jean-Vincent Albertini and Rui Onorio disappointed, failing to make the most of their good qualifying positions. In a fascinating turn of events, the two JLD cars had a dash to the flag that was settled by 0.0001 seconds; Laurindo Coelho grabbed the final point from Anita Horford by 67 micrometres (the width of a human hair).

Grid
1. Asim Adhikari (Team Bentley) - 1:25.708
2. Jordan McKenna (Honda Team M-TEC) - 1:25.804
3. Naoki Yamamoto (Honda Team M-TEC) - 1:25.900

As part of the earlier mentioned changes, I have made a couple of teams use the same chassis as their engine's work team for the sake of realism. If you insist on your original chassis, I'll reverse the change.

FIA Prototype Challenge Press Report wrote:Nissan 1-2-3-4-5 at Spa-Francorchamps

In the second race of the season, Nissan Motorsport managed to get back on top after a disappointing race day in Cyprus by taking a 1-2-3 finish. In particular champion Ron Mignolet dominated proceedings, winning pole by nearly half a second and then going flag-to-flag. Even though the winning margin is only ten seconds, this was a product of Mignolet severly reducing his speed in the final laps in order to bring the car home.

Scuderia Guastalla-Genesis Engineering and Team Racing Sun came home to make it a top 5 consisting solely of R393s, Kayra Clifton coming back from a rookie error in her qualifying lap. Ricardo Llosa, winner of the season opener, was the driver qualifying as "best of the rest", half a minute behind P5. The only threats to Nissan domination were Jenson Button and Richard Rafi, who qualifed second and third with Bentley power. Unfortunately, Button lost nearly five minutes in the middle of the race because of a spark plug problem and Rafi severely damaged his car by clipping the inside of La Source, ruining his pace for the day.

Calvin Brooks struggled in qualfiying, but managed to turn things around to move up to seventh place. Garage 59 McLaren Racing International once more showed that points are handed out on Sunday, putting two cars in the top 10 despite all three cars starting outside of it. Nick Tandy unfortunately suffered a terminal engine issue, otherwise they could've possibly made it three out of three. Honda struggled, but were optimistic after Naoki Yamamoto qualified fourth. Unfortunately, the Japanese driver completely misjudged an overtaking attempt against Button down the backstraight and had a major shunt that took out Jean-Vincent Albertini as well in a domino effect.

FIA Prototype Challenge Press Report wrote:FIA Announces Calendar Changes

Having been informed that the city of San Francisco does not have the capacities to host the 4 Hours of California at the Golden Gate Bridgeway this year, the FIA have decided to award the calendar slot to the Twin Ring Motegi, which will move the Japanese round to the weekend of the 22 September.

The former slot of the 4 Hours of Motegi will be taken by a new race: the 4 Hours of America, hosted on the "East" layout of Grand Valley Speedway on the weekend 25 August. Live coverage will be provided, as for all other races, on the official FIA Prototype Challenge Twitch account.

FIA Prototype Challenge Press Report wrote:Calvin Brooks Passes Ron Mignolet to Win in Spain

Ron Mignolet looked poised to take his second win in a row until the last ten minutes of the 4 Hours of Navarra, when it was clear that Calvin Brooks could threaten his first place. On the second-to-last lap, Mignolet left an opening at Turn 13, which Brooks ruthlessly used to take the lead and secure the first Prototype Challenge win for GB Racing. Mignolet can take comfort in the fact that he's taken the championship lead, even if Ricardo Llosa finished third for McLaren.

McLaren had high hopes for this event after Nick Tandy stormed to a dominant pole position. Unfortunately, the Englishman had a complete engine failure after only 22 minutes and could not bring the car back to the pitlane. Up to that point, he had driven around a second per lap faster than anyone else on the track. The #17 McLaren of Rhys Davies came back from a mediocre qualifying outing to finish in fourth position, fighting off a late assault by Richard Rafi in the Bentley Century LM Edition.

Whilst the Bentley-powered privateers had a great day, the works team struggled significantly with reliability. Sandra Yoo had to give up, despite her confidence in being able to drive around the problem, after having done 134 laps. Asim Adhikari lost a lot of time with a brake issue and Jenson Button had to pit unexpectedly to deal with a slow puncture in his Michelin tyre, which wrecked his stint and put him out of order with everyone else. A team that has struggled majorily this year, Honda Team M-TEC, scored their first points of the season with Naoki Yamamoto in 10th.

BMW Efficiency Dynamics JLD Motorsport had a decent race, Anita Horford came home in eighth position. Jean-Vincent Albertini was looking great in the first hour of the race, until a turbocharger failure ended his evening in a fiery fashion. Still, his performance was good enough to secure the fastest lap of the race which was quicker than his qualifying lap. Bruno Senna impresses again, after starting a lowly 16th place, he rushed his way back into the top 10, improving on his qualfiying slot by nine positions.

FIA Prototype Challenge Press Report wrote:Bentley Beat BMW to Win in Austria

The 4 Hours of Austria were the event the struggling Team Bentley was looking forward the most, as their car could demonstrate its top speed advantage. However, qualfiying belonged to Jean-Vincent Albertini. The Monegasque racer nailed his qualfiying lap to take his first pole position in his FIA Prototype Challenge career and the first for BMW Efficiency Dynamics JLD Motorsport.

However, Asim Adhikari made it their mission to haunt the BMW driver. Albertini's work did not get easier when his running mate Laurindo Coelho took himself and Jenson Button out of the running a bit more than 20 minutes into the race in a desperate attempt to keep fourth position. In the end, Adhikari managed to hammer in a couple of FLAPs near the end of the fourth stint, coming out on top after the stop.

The order at the top was confirmed when John Farano, who was sitting in a great seventh place, completely misjudged the speed in Rauch corner, running out of track and hitting the barrier with four minutes left on the clock. The race concluded behind the safety car, allowing Adhikari to take his first win of the year with Albertini behind him in his first finish of the season, some relief for the seemingly unlucky driver.

In the championship fight, Ricardo Llosa and Ron Mignolet both were trying to just get as many points as they could get today, Llosa having the edge thanks to great fuel management and a quick team order. Sandra Yoo also got rewarded for fuel efficiency, she managed to get away with one stop less than the rest of the field like the McLarens, but she would've run out of fuel without the SC phase according to Team Bentley.

FIA Prototype Challenge Press Report wrote:Ligier Introduces LMC Customer Chassis

In a post on the r/motorsports subreddit, the French manufacturer Groupe Ligier has introduced their customer chassis following the LMC ruleset that will be replacing the LMP1 standard in 2020. The model, known as the Ligier JS PC1, has according to a PR spokesperson "delivered on the promise of the LMC category to allow fit of a sheer unbelieveable variation of engines".

The new front mid-engine layout drew some scepticism in the fan community, but also a number of positive reviews. "It's gonna be fun to see these fight on the track," one poster wrote. According to Ligier, it already has four teams confirming their interest to purchase the vehicle for use in the 2020 FIA Prototype Challenge season, which will open in early March of next year..

Best In The World wrote:Team Bentley to Withdraw from Prototype Challenge, Become Chassis Supplier

In cooperation with Volkswagen AG, we have decided that the Team Bentley entry, currently competing in the FIA Prototype Challenge will withdraw from competition after the conclusion of the season on December 15.

Despite our success in the series, both sides agreed that the presentation of the Bentley brand will be improved by this move. Best In The World will be proud to continue represent such a prestigeous brand in whatever racing series best suits it.

However, we are currently designing a customer chassis, thereby extending Bentley's participation in prototype racing. Our Bentley Thur LMC, the prototype version of the newest Bentley model, will be ready for track testing by late October.

All personnel that currently are working in our engine department have been assigned to various other projects under the Best In The World label. For the rest of the year, we are all in on winning the 2019 titles and going out in a blaze of glory.

"LMC will bring back motorsport. No complex hybrids or whatever that fans don't get. Old-school motorsport, that's what fans want."
"BMW are wrong to withdraw, they are gonna miss the series more than we'll miss them."
"We got at least two manufacturer entries and two engine suppliers excited to work with us."
