We need to get that 318 working properly. Can't have the newer car being beaten by the old one all the time. Sean's doing a very good job in the M3 though.

Stuttgarter Zeitung wrote:MERCEDES-BENZ WITHDRAW FROM WTCM AT END OF 1991

Mercedes-Benz AMG Team SONAX will be leaving the World Touring Car Masters at the end of the 1991 season, leaving 1989 WTCM champion Roland Ratzenberger, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Andrea Geisler out of a drive. It is believed that the move is due to the lack of prestige marques in the series combined with the increased rumours of a Mercedes return to Formula One in the next few years.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the most successful manufacturers in WTCM history, taking the Class C championship in 1988 with Roland Asch.

Autosport wrote:Ford to leave World Touring Car Masters at the end of 1991

Ford will cease to have a factory team in the World Touring Car Masters at the end of the current season. The announcement comes following months of speculation regarding the future of the manufacturer in the series, after the new Sierra Sapphire not being up to the standard expected for the manufacturer who dominated the final years of Group A racing.

Ford's announcement comes weeks after Mercedes-Benz announced they wouldn't carry their factory program into 1992, leaving the FISA world championship before the circus travels to Macau. In a statement sent to the press, the Ford representatives justify the decision based on the investment not bringing back the required returns this season. "We invested a lot into WTCM, and over the last 4 seasons, Ford became the most sucessful manufacturer in touring car history. Because of that, we had some expectations regarding the new ruleset, which unfortunately, weren't met. That's why, for now, Ford are stepping down as a factory team in WTCM".

This leaves Zakspeed, the Ford factory backed team over the last three seasons, in a quite precarious situation in WTCM. Peter Zakowski, leader of the german squad, has commented that nothing is yet sure for 1992. "We believe in the potential of the cars we built. We have improved over the season - that is a fact. Even if the results don't often show it, our data says the car is performing better than it was at Symmons Plains, back in March. We were preparing an improved version of the Sierra Sapphire for 1992, but right now, if its going to go ahead or not, it's quite unsure. Our focus is to finish the season in the best way possible given the circunstances."

Across 1991, new Sierra Sapphire has not matched the expectations set by its predecessor. Displaying some fairly incosistent showing, the best result of the year for the Zakspeed team and Ford came at the RAC Tourist Trophy, where Manuel Reuter crossed the line in 8th place. It's been the only points of the season for the defending champions. In the manufacturer championship, Ford currently sit in 6th place, on 93 points.

The 1991 World Touring Car Masters season has currently three rounds left in the championship. The next race is happening next, at the mythical Spa-Francorhamps, in Belgium.

Penalties:
Johnny Cecotto has been handed a 10 second time penalty for causing a collision with Bernd Schneider. The venezuelan driver locked-up in the rain whilst coming onto the pits, hit the Vauxhall, which in turn went into the wall and got damage.

Autosport wrote:Cecotto handed penalty for Schneider clash

Johnny Cecotto has been handed a time penalty for the collision involving the venezuelan factory BMW driver and Bernd Schenider. The ten second time penalty handed by the stewards sees Cecotto drop from 2nd to 3rd in the results of the race, behind USD's Patrick Watts, held last Sunday, at Spa-Francorchamps.

The incident ocurred on lap 30 of the race, and saw Cecotto hit the back of Schneider's Vauxhall Cavalier when he was coming into the pits for his first pit-stop. The resulting touch saw Schneider loose control of his car and hit the wall, which damaged the Vauxhall. "I just couldn't control the car after the touch. The car just aquaplanned into the wall and, suddenly, the steering was damaged. I managed to control it and take the car to the finish, but the pace was gone. We were lucky to finish in fourth place in the end", said Schneider after the race.

While Cecotto didn't pose any comments thus far into the press for the incident, BMW Team Schnitzer's team principal, Charly Lamm did give a version of the accounts, posing serious criticism on the belgian stewardings over the penalty. "We saw the incident on live tv, and we believed that Bernd might have blocked Johnny's path into the pits. A few minutes later, we get a fax notifying us that Johnny had been disqualified and that he should stop the car! We were shocked! We immediatelly contacted the FISA representative on the track over the subject. Only in the later stages of the race did we get informed that the penalty would be ten seconds. It's a shame we lost the 1-2, but at least it's not a disqualification based on nationality bias...". The nationality bias comment was a take on Silvio Bachot's nationality, current championship leader and main rival in the championship battle. The belgian driver has yet to comment.

With Cecotto's time penalty, the 1991 World Touring Car Masters championship is wide open. Silvio Bachot leads on 158 points to Cecotto's 155. Bernd Schneider, Patrick Watts, Tim Harvey and Davies Leslie are still mathematically in contention, on 130, 122, 117 and 109 points respectively, but with only 50 points left to take, it will take something special for one of them to clinch the WTCM drivers crown.

The next round of the WTCM championship is going to be held at the Nürburgring, in two weeks time. The circus will then fly to Macau for the final round of the season.

On updates:
Its the final update of the season, and therefore, you have to choose wisely: You can only choose one single upgrade to be applied to your car (or driver). It's not one single upgrade type: it's only one upgrade. Choose wisely. Take into account how many upgrades you've asked, and don't forget that engines are restricted to 310HP. Don't forget as well: "Test Driver bonus can't be applied in each upgrade: they have a maximum of 3 uses per season.".

Updates can be posted until the 25th February, midnight.

On Macau entries: Feel free to post Macau only entries. I would appreciate if you focused on local drivers from the region to further boost realism!

Macau Entries can be posted until March 7th. Beware how many entries are available by checking the budget file.

Just noticed this is technically a loop-hole/rule that I didn't close, because you have two different models. So, technically, the overall upgrade would have to cost twice the value. But since this is the first time this has happened, I will consider two different RNG's for the same price. I'll add a rule regarding this now.

Autosport wrote:Audi announces return to WTCM in 1992

Audi have announced that they will be returning to the World Touring Car Masters in 1992. The german manufacturer have requested the ammologation of a Super Touring version of their new Audi 80, which started production earlier this year.

Regarding who will run their factory team for next season, Audi chairman revealed that conversations are happening with Tom Walkinshaw to continue their association with the Volkswagen brand, after handling the running of the de-facto Volkswagen factory team this year in WTCM. The chairman of TWR didn't want to comment on the subject, claiming its too early yet to confirm anything.

Audi is the first new manufacturer to announce their commitment to 1992, after some weeks where the WTCM grid had suffered major setbacks, with Ford and Mercedes-Benz announcing they would depart their factory efforts at the end of the season. Other rumoured manufacturers to commit for 1992 are Maserati and Renault, but nothing has been announced yet. Renault are rumoured to have partnered with Williams F1 outfit to developr their 1992 vehicle.

In their short tenure in WTCM, across two seasons, Audi took more than 30 class wins, including an overall win in the 1990 Pau Sprint Race, becoming the first ever (and only) non A-Class vehicle to win an overall event in the WTCM Group A tenure.

Andy Rouse will replace Armin Hahne at the Nurburgring.

Rumours are abound that Lada are planning to enter the WTCM in 1992. The Soviet marque has shown interest in competing in international competition, but no concrete announcements have been made so far. It is believed that the Lada Samara would likely be the car fielded. Furthermore, there have even been rumours linking Australian touring car star and former WTCM driver Peter Brock and his Team Brock to spearheading this factory effort, owing to Brock's role as the main Lada importer in Australia. However, as neither Lada nor Brock have made any statements on the matter, it remains just speculation at this moment.

Autosport wrote:Walkinshaw confirms Audi switch for 1992

Tom Walkinshaw has confirmed rumours that TWR Volkswagen will become TWR Audi for the 1992 season, assuming the mantle of Audi's WTCM factory team. Though the venerable Golf has only seen very limited success throughout the 1991 season, hampered by chronic weight and handling issues, Walkinshaw is believed to have sufficiently impressed Volkswagen executives with the rate of progress attained, nonetheless.

"I am delighted to announce that Tom Walkinshaw Racing will be transitioning to the Audi 80 for the 1992 WTCM season," said Walkinshaw. "Of course, we would've been happy to continue with the Golf, given the level of improvement that we've managed with the platform so far, but the Audi 80 is, obviously, a top quality product. So, we're very, very excited to get our hands on it and start working with it."

"Audi, of course, is a very good manufacturer, and we are very proud to now count them among our numerous international partners. I believe that this collaboration is also a vote of confidence in the strength of Tom Walkinshaw Racing by one of the world's premier automotive concerns, and that our collective, considerable assets will absolutely amount to a winning combination."

As the World Touring Car Masters descends upon Macau for the first time, Hong Kong driver Andre Newate is proclaiming he will show up the veterans and win in his first outing in the championship. That this is not only his first time in the WTCM, or his first time racing at Macau, or his first time racing any sort of car, is of little concern to the 21 year-old, who is certain he will shock the world with his Team Racing Ford Sierra. "I am coming to Macau with one intention: to win. Both in pre-qualifying and the race itself. Anything less is unacceptable," proclaimed Newate boldly to the press. "My victory is inevitable. Silvio Bachot and Johnny Cecotto will look like amateurs in comparison," he added, taking a swipe at the two championship contenders. Furthermore, Newate announced his intention to compete full-time in WTCM in 1992. At the time of print, neither Bachot nor Cecotto has made any comments on Newate's fighting talk, and the rest of the WTCM paddock has shown a similar apathy.

Well, somehow, we managed to stay afloat despite our...mistakes.

nonetheless, Autosport Mannschaft Gelsenkirchen is very satisfied with our performance this season, with the highlights obviously being Herr Strycek's 2nd place qualifying in Pau and our class win in Sweden. We would also like to thank Herr Danner and Herr Bartels for their contribution, with praise given to danner's great performance at spa getting an overall top ten.

Finally, special thanks our sponsors for their massive contribution in making this european season happen, and, of course, thanks to Opel for giving us two of their vectras.

Rest assured, we are definitely coming back next season, and we are actively seeking sponsors to fund our 1992 program, and we wish to continue our association with Opel.

The Mitsubishi bigwigs will have to investigate Ralliart regarding the misuse of funds, and perhaps seek a paydriver for 1992. The manufacturer is contemplating withdrawal from the sport after 1992, depending on results.

Zakspeed aims for 1992 WTCM Season
1992 was a hard season for the 1989 and 1990 WTCM Champions. Zakspeed only scored 5 points during the season with an 8th place at the RAC Tourist Trophy race, their only points of the season. A disastrous year for the team who had dominated 1990 with Manuel Reuter. The new Ford Sierra Sapphire was not competitive despite Zakspeed's determination and upgrades during 1991. The team is left in a precarious situation as Ford decided to withdraw from WTCM at the end of the season, but is not giving up. Peter Zakowski said ""We are obviously sad, our season did not go well enough, our partner Ford is leaving... I don't blame them, we leave on good terms. We respect their decision and the door is open if they want to come back in the future. We want to fight back and we want to come back for 1992." Obviously, the team will not have a manufacturer deal for the next season and will most likely scale back to a privateer status. Funding does not seem to be a problem as the german brewery Diebels Alt sponsorship deal runs until the end of 1993. Zakowski made no comment about their car deal or their drivers choices for 1992. It is highly unlikely that Reuter and Biela are staying in the team. Reuter might want to look for greener pastures, while Biela has been seen holding talks with Audi, coming back for 1992.
