Vittoria Tessarini wrote:I knew not to expect too much from the Dywa. I saw it run at the Trofeo Dino Ferrari, and it wasn't fast. That was fine for me. As an inexperienced driver who wanted a taste of F1, that would have been enough for me. It ran reasonably reliably at Imola last year. I thought I was getting a good deal.

The moment the cars arrived, I knew I had been wrong. The suspension geometry was... scary to say the least. I could see, without having driven the car, that it wasn't going to go in a straight line. And the more closely we looked at the car, we saw that the entire assembly of the car was amateurishly done. I'm afraid to say that the sad truth is that Dywa is barely capable of building and maintaining two cars, and were out of their depth trying to assemble 28 over the winter.

When we fired the car up for the first time, the engine literally shook it to pieces. We have tried to rebuild the cars but it's a futile endeavour. Making this car fast and reliable would effectively mean to design and build an entirely new car, and that is beyond the capabilities of a small outfit as ours. We're going to try and make the best out of what we have right now, but I won't promise we'll be here next year.

Growing up, my dad was always working on cars. He was a mechanic at O.S.C.A. and those cars were beautiful. They were fast, they were elegant, every screw was in the right place. As a girl, I was standing at the track at Brescia, watching my dad in his little red OSCA sports car speed away towards Rome in the Mille Miglia. I remember being at Monza as a teenager, watching OSCA and Ferrari fight for victories. These memories inspired me to go racing myself. Now, look at this mess. I feel no pride putting these Dywa cars out on track, and I'm not having a good time trying to race them. In the end, the promise of an affordable Formula 1 series was too good to be true, I guess. The glory days of privateers in Formula 1 are over, and I feel silly for chasing an impossible dream.

Though the Rouen race has already been run, I haven't had the time to put together a proper race report for various reasons. That will be done when it is done. However, common sense does seem to be prevailing with regards to the various drivers already abandoning the sinking ship whilst they still can.

Lena Troscchi suffered a particularly gruesome crash early on after going off at the second turn, the back of the car came off, and her car rolled back onto the racing line, only for Luciano Sighinolfi to smash into her stricken car at about 80mph. As a result of this crash, she has sustained life-threatening back, neck and leg injuries, and will be out for the rest of the season. Butterfox has already indicated her intention to replace the injured Troscchi with South Yemeni driver Hoji Imin. Von Gottorp's replacement by Marco Tortellini henceforth has also been noted.

Il pensiero di partecipare a un'altra gara automobilistica in questo momento mi riempie di paura, quindi ti restituisco le mie due auto Dywa-001. Abbiamo lasciato le macchine nel garage di Rouen.

TL;DR: Scuderia Sighinolfi withdraws from Dywa GP with immediate effect, as the owner-driver is wracked with guilt after the incidents involving Rogerson and Trosschi; of course, all three of them ultimately live to drive another day.

Autosprint wrote:Dywa GP Nürburgring race cancelled, new round scheduled at Norisring
The first three races of the new Dywa Grand Prix Series have been eventful, to say the least. Too eventful perhaps. At least that is what the Nürburgring circuit organisers believe anyway, as they have announced the cancelling of the much-hyped Dywa Internationaler Eifelpokal, due to take place at the Nürburgring over the 27th and 28th of May. "After seeing the serious injuries suffered by Kelby Rogerson and Lena Troscchi at Enna and Rouen, it would be nothing short of insanity to allow these deathtraps to race on even the Betonschleife, never mind the Südschleife," said a spokesman for the circuit, citing two very serious accidents in the races held so far. As of going to print, Kelby Rogerson is on the mend after his back-breaking crash, but Italian Lena Troscchi is still in a grave condition in hospital after her gruesome crash at Rouen. The Dywa GP organisers have wasted no time in lining up a replacement event: the Internationaler Dywapokal Frankens, to be held at the Norisring on the same weekend as the Nürburgring round was originally planned for.

The Earl of Sandwich is going to use this as an excuse to bow out of the series before he too gets killed. Dickenson-Lightley get on the phone and hire their back-up and Lightley Sr.'s bridge-partner's nephew Jehan-Jacques Graves Image, who will drive alongside George at the Norisring at least. As this is a very last minute sign-up, we don't know right now if Graves will stay beyond the Norisring.

Ragusa News wrote:Pilia "furious" to be out of a drive

Scuderia Sighinolfi second driver Nino Pilia has been left out of a drive by his team owner's decision to withdraw from the racing series following a horror crash at the Dywa Grande Épreuve.

"I am furious," Pilia told anyone who would listen. "This is just typical Italian arrogance. They always refuse to recognise the right of Seborgan nationals to self-determination. It's definitely not a coincidence that this has happened to a Seborgan driver running for an Italian team."

Despite these claims, Sighinolfi wished his former teammate well, saying that "I hope he finds a seat elsewhere on the grid if he really wants one, but it can no longer be at my team because my team no longer exists."

Following the withdrawal of Silvio Bachot, there may be an opening at Bambini di San Marino. This seems a natural fit for Pilia, not just because of the team's determined non-Italianness but also because the team might help him figure out new ways to enjoy his private life when he's not working at the petrol station.

Updates to follow if anything occurs.

RACE REPORT
The race was marred by a large number of heavy accidents, the most severe being that of Johannes Gruber and Txatxu Etxeberria. In both these cases, and in a number of less severe crashes, the rear half of the car was ripped off. Polesitter Leopoldo Faraldo was in command for much of the early race, but an engine failure would put paid to his chances of victory. In the end, Amada Castellón scored Reception Carrot's second consecutive win, and Gabriella Mondadori put hebr disastrous start to the season behind her with a second place and the fastest lap to boot. Jehan-Jacques Graves, in only his second Dywa GP race, finished third, with both Dickenson-Lightley cars finishing in the points after George Lightley's memorable last-corner pass on Tim Floc'h. A low-key fourth place for Mike Zhen Hong now puts the Great Leap Backward driver just two points behind Leopoldo Faraldo in the championship battle.

Drive of the Race: George Lightley — snatched himself a crucial championship point at the death with a daring pass on Tim Floc'h at the final corner on the final lap, the two drivers having fought tooth and nail for the last few laps, swapping places in one of the most memorable on-track battles in the series' history to date.
Reject of the Race: The rear half of the Dywa-001 — it proved very eager this weekend to separate from the rest of the car, with such a fate befalling over a quarter of the grid over the course of the race, with some examples shown here.

INJURY REPORT

First up, Giacomo Campatelli.
He sustained a rather nasty accident in the first lap of the race, starting the race's trend of cars' rear halves separating.

1-30: no injury
30-70: misses one grand prix
70-90: misses two grands prix
90-100: misses three grands prix

11! Campatelli is unscathed.

Second up, Johannes Gruber.

He too had a rather nasty crash early on the second lap of the race, with the back of his car also detaching.

1-30: no injury
30-70: misses one grand prix
70-90: misses two grands prix
90-100: misses three grands prix

70! Gruber will have to sit out the next two rounds. Pinkd56, you must nominate a replacement.

Lastly, Txatxu Etxeberria had a terrifying crash where the back of the car came off and he was t-boned twice.
1-33: misses three grands prix
34-66: misses the rest of the season
67-100: We shall see

7! Etxeberria is injured, but nowhere near as badly as one would have expected. TCBY, you must nominate a replacement.

It was a hectic day to remember for Soviet motorsports. On Sunday Belarussian hopeful Nikolai Zorbin debuted in the Dywa Grand Prix Series, a feeder series for Formula 1. Hopes were high, and as for the first driver in the series from the Soviet Socialist Republics, he impressed immediately . Fighting hard against his western counterparts he held onto 3rd place until his Italian car broke down. In a fury he threw his helmet at the nearest track marshall, claiming he was robbed of a victory because his car was sabotaged.

The Soviet Embassy to Italy urges that no harm comes to Zorbin. Zorbin is scheduled to take part in the next race in Barcelona as part of a 2-race replacement deal after West German driver Johannes Gruber sustained injury.

The Trofeo Flor Bath certainly lived up to expectations, with the outcome not being decided until the final few laps. A scheduling error by the track's organisers did mean that the Formula 1 Mugello Grand Prix was held on the same weekend, causing pandemonium all weekend, magnified by the debut of Brabham's controversial new fan car.

QUALIFYING REPORT

RACE REPORT
An accident at the start meant substitute driver Javier Scarpetta didn't even make it to the first corner. The first half of the race was dominated by his teammate, Amalure Arrigorriagakoa, whose pace the rest of the field could not match. The first few laps of the race were full of close racing and slipstreaming, especially down the pit straight; however, presence of the desperately-slow Ouragan on the track meant lapping him broke up the pack, and this allowed the lead cars to establish a large break on the rest of the field. Arrigorriagakoa's domination would be brought to an untimely end when her gearbox packed up. Amada Castellón took control and seemed certain to win back-to-back races for the first time in Dywa GP history until an engine failure late-race would scupper those dreams. Polesitter Giacomo Campatelli took the lead then and looked certain to become Dywa GP's first repeat winner, only for his car too to break down with just two laps to go. All this paved the way for Timo Fuchs to take a deserved maiden victory both for him and for Scuderia del Made in Italy e dell'Emilia-Romagna, with the added bonus point for fastest lap. Leopoldo Faraldo's failure to finish was capitalised upon by Mike Zhen Hong, whose second-placed finish puts him at the top of the championship standings with three consecutive points finishes. Eclectic Seborgan driver Nino Pilia completed the rostrum. Jehan Duchamps' fourth-placed finish moved him above Leopoldo Faraldo on countback to second in the championship, and rounding out the points were Black Swan's Charles Blanc and Giacomo Campatelli, who still picked up a single point in spite of his failure to finish.

Drive of the Race: Timo Fuchs — a steady drive to victory, with fastest lap to boot, set aside the naysayers' doubts. Perhaps we'll be seeing him in Formula 1 soon? Honourable mention to Nikolai Zorbin; the Soviet driver impressed many on his maiden outing, with some daring, aggressive overtakes, only for a suspension failure to rob him of a podium on debut.
Reject of the Race: Gerome Smith — even Luciano Sighinolfi would have been appalled by that attempt to get the car pointing in the right direction.

INJURY REPORT
Gerome Smith had one of the silliest accients in Dywa GP's history so far.
He hit the wall at around 75mph with no effort to slow down whilst driving in the wrong direction.

1-40: No injury, except for his dignity
41-80: Concussion, will race next round but with reduced stats
81-90: Sprained ankle, will miss one race
91-100: Broken ankle, will miss two races

In yet another twist to the pandemonic Dywa Grand Prix Series this year, the event scheduled to take place at Montjuïc Park has been cancelled, presumably on safety grounds. This will come as a blow to the Spanish fans of the series, with two Spain-based teams, Reception Carrot and Euskadi Lasterketa both enjoying quite some success in the races so far. However, fans of the latter will likely be less disappointed, as the replacement race scheduled is to be at the street circuit in the historically-Basque city of Pau, in the southwest corner of France, to be dubbed the Euskal Herriko Dywa Sari Nagusia.

QUALIFYING REPORT
Image

Basque driver Amalure Arrigorrigakoa scored her first career pole position, narrowly pipping Gabriella Mondadori. On the other end of the field, Automotive SuperSport had a weekend to forget, for both of their cars failed to qualify, the first time in Dywa GP history that this fate has befallen a team.

RACE REPORT
The main story of the race was tyres. Owing to me making a hames of editing the data for pit strategies high temperatures and a sub-standard batch of tyres from Pirelli, most drivers had to make two or even three stops to manage the high tyre wear, with one exception: Gabriella Mondadori. Through careful tyre-management, she was able to get away with only a single stop, and coupled with her excellent pace, she lapped the entire field, and was in fact two laps up on the entire field before her pitstop. Not even an early-race collision seemed to make much of a deal to her performance, though the same cannot be said for the enigmatic Frenchman. Also deserving of praise was Javier Scarpetta, whose fifth-place finish is likely to convince Euskadi Lasterketa to keep him on for the final two races, which would unfortunately leave Txatxu Etxeberria out of a drive through no real fault of his own. Along with Mondadori, podium-finishers Peter Krieg and Michel Vaillant put themselves back into championship contention by dint of just surviving through low-key, but safe drives.
Less deserving of praise were the performances of many of the championship contenders, most of whom failed to finish. In particular, Seborgan star Nino Pilia went from hero to zero after Pau with his embarrassing attempt at recovering from a spin being undoubtedly the cause of much mockery. Points-leader Mike Zhen Hong saw his car go up in smoke mid-race, but clings onto his championship lead by a single point from Mondadori entering the next race at Clermont-Ferrand.

FINAL CLASSIFICATION

FASTEST LAPS

Driver of the Race: Gabriella Mondadori — blistering pace all weekend, coupled with being the only driver capable of managing her tyres enough to only make one pit stop was duly rewarded with the most dominant singular performance in any Dywa GP race so far. An honourable mention to Peter Krieg for managing to drive extremely anonymously and still somehow stumble into another second-place finish, and thus back into championship contention.
Image

Reject of the Race: Nino Pilia — that attempt at getting his car pointed in the right direction was certainly not something you would expect from any driver with notions of staying as a championship contender. A dishonourable mention goes to Automotive SuperSport for both of their drivers failing to qualify for the race.
Image

INJURY REPORT
Ouragan sustained a nasty accident in a collision with eventual race-winner Gabriella Mondadori on the pit straight, the latter's car miraculously emerging unscathed.

The permutations are:
1-20: miraculously-unscathed
21-50: bruising, 'reduced' stats
51-89: bad contusions, misses one race
90-99: Broken vertebra, out for remainder of season
100: Receives a bump on the head, becomes competent

11-50: Broken leg - misses the final race (has sufficient time to recover for next season)
51-90: Broken back - misses next race and first half of 1979
91-100: ... (second RNG)

46! Castellón will miss the final race of the season with a broken leg. HawkAussie, you must nominate a replacement driver for Monza.

Second up: Johannes Gruber
He has once again been in a heavy crash.
Similar to Castellón but at a higher speed.
Image
This was a very violent impact.
The permutations are as follows:
1-10: miraculously unscathed
11-40: broken leg - misses next race (back for next season)
41-90: mangled legs - misses final race and first half of next season
91-100: ... (second RNG)
Image
12! Gruber once again is injured, this time a broken leg. Pinkd56, you must once more find a replacement driver.

Lastly, Gerome Smith.
Smith had a horrifying accident where the back of his car went into a cliff.

The permutations are as follows:
1-5: Unscathed miraculously
6-40: Two broken ankles - misses final race (will be recovered for first race 1979)
41-90: Mangled legs - misses final race and first half of 1979
91-100: ... (second RNG)

Image
96... As you can see, this is not good, and a second RNG is needed.

The permutations for this RNG are as follows:
1-33: Broken back and legs (out for the entirety of 1979)
33-67: Paralysis (Career-ending)
68-100: Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

41! Sic transit gloria mundi. _gg_, you must nominate a replacement driver for Monza.

Re: 1978 Dywa GP — Charade race report up!

Following Gerome Smith's near-death incident, the atmosphere in British team Dickenson-Lightley was very subdued post-race. When Jehan-Jacques Graves strolled into the team tent and made some rather crass loud remarks about Smith, Graves' teammate George Lightley punched him in the face. The two got into a brawl on the ground and the team's catering table was sadly ruined.

Graves was fired on the spot by C. Dickenson, and he and Lightley Sr. went around the paddock looking for a replacement. Nikolai Zorbin, race winner, was being replaced by "Ouragan" for the season finale at Monza, and after offering him a brilliant British sausage roll, Dickenson-Lightley were able to convince the Belarussian (who did not know the updated standings at this point) that he still had a chance of winning the 1978 championship in the D-L car at Monza. Zorbin accepted.

Nikolai Zorbin replaces Jehan-Jacques Graves for the final round.

DYWA HARD, having lost the opportunity to run Zorbin, will run his compatriot Yuri Komarov at the season finale.

QUALIFYING REPORT

Continuing his strong form after his win at Charade, Soviet driver Nikolai Zorbin took pole in his first outing with Dickenson-Lightley. By dint of this, Javier Scarpetta and Timo Fuchs were eliminated from championship contention, as both needed to score maximum points to have any chance of winning the title.

RACE REPORT
The race was dominated from start to finish by Gabriella Mondadori. Knowing a win would give her the best chance possible of taking the title, she took the lead at the first corner and was never touched all race, except for during the pit cycle. Only Leonhard von Gottorp, standing in for Gerome Smith at Black Swan seemed to be on her pace, but unfortunately his car suffered a water leak early on, bringing a premature end to any challenge to Mondadori's pace.
However, had Mike Zhen Hong not cracked under pressure, her efforts would have been for nought, as after some early attrition, he had moved up into second place, enough to guarantee the title. Unfortunately, he made a big mistake and span off at the Lesmos, handing Mondadori the championship for all intents and purposes. Frustrated, Zhen Hong attempted a comeback, but got held up by Barry McKockiner of all people in a massive train. Unfortunately, he used up too much of his tyres trying to get past McKockiner, and not long after passing him, he sustained a puncture, deflating his championship hopes yet further.
His championship hopes now rested on Mondadori crashing out or breaking down, both quite likely considering the nature of the Dywa-001 and the Renzo V8. However, it would not be, and she held on to comfortably win by over half a minute from Amalure Arrigorriagakoa, whose result sealed the inaugural teams' championship for the Basque team Euskadi Lasterketa. Timo Fuchs rounded out his season with a podium, and there are rumours that he might in fact be going to Formula 1 in 1979. Completing the points were Seborgan star Nino Pilia, Aimé Voulescons, and Jehan Duchamps. Though his car broke down with just a few laps to go, Michel Vaillant managed to net himself the fastest lap of the race, and with it one last championship point.

Drive of the Race: Barry McKockiner — in spite of his dreadful qualifying pace, during the race he was able to hold off championship-contender Mike Zhen Hong for a number of laps, and ultimately trigger a half-lap of utter carnage where it was a miracle nobody collided with one another.
Image
Reject of the Race: Mike Zhen Hong — coming into the final race, he was the favourite to win the title. However, he cracked under pressure, spinning out from a position that would've guaranteed him the title, and then insult being added to injury when his car broke down as he trundled around in PNowhere.

FINAL NOTES
Thank ye all for participating in this championship! :D
There will be a new thread for the 1979 season going up at an undetermined time, and there will be a number of changes to the format of the season, as well as a brand new ground-effects Dywa! :deletraz:

Tessarini: I'm glad it is over

Vittoria Tessarini, driver-owner of the Scuderia del Made in Italiy è dell'Emilia-Romagna, has confirmed neither her nor the team will be returning to the Dywa GP championship in 1979.

"To be honest with you, it was a disaster. I was a fool to think that I could realize my dream of Formula 1 on the cheap. We tried to make the best out of it, but now I'm just glad it is over," she says of her season.

"I would like to thank Timo for putting up with this car for the entire season, and for scoring a victory and a podium. He has proven that he deserves better than driving a Dywa, and I wish him good luck in his further career."

Not holding back on scathing remarks, Tessarini criticized the Dywa GP series for endangering the health and safety of the drivers involved.

"Fortunately these cars don't go very fast, otherwise there would have been fatalities. I'm just glad that I came out of this season alive and unhurt. Motor racing is dangerous, but that doesn't mean that it is acceptable that two or three drivers end their sunday afternoon in hospital every weekend. I don't know if it's the cars, the tracks, the driving standards... a bit of everything I think. I'm a child of the 50s, and I love driving on old school tracks like Charade or Syracuse more than I should, but you can't drive on these tracks in a car you can split in half by looking at it the wrong way, and with a field of drivers who drive into walls trying to point their cars back in the right direction. You need to respect these tracks. This entire series, and I have the honesty not to exclude myself from that, is an excercise in hubris. Everyone was out of their depth, playing at being Formula 1 drivers. I've had enough."

It is understood that Tessarini has already sold the two Dywa cars and the accompanying equipment. The identity of the buyer remains unconfirmed.

All views are Tessarini's and not my own. This season has been great fun and thanks for running this season. I just couldn't justify the team staying around for 1979. I'll keep my entry and enter an all-new team for 1979.
