PRODUCTION BIKES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IS BORN!

FIM Approves of FG Sport's ambitious new project
_______________________________________

With the approval of the FIM, Italy-Based FG Sport, run by former 70s Formula 1 driver Maurizio Flammini, gained the green light for the inaugural season of the World Superbike Championship, the new top-tier road racing series for production bikes only.

With the 500cc world championship's new Owners Illuminardi Sports Entertainment implementing new regulations meant to move Grand Prix motorcycle Racing to follow the Formula 1 model of encouraging privateers to build their own machinery, FG Sport saw an opportunity to attract many privateer teams who couldn't afford the costs of building their own bikes, with the production-based model inspired by the AMA American Superbike series being a very attractive alternative to Grand Prix Motorcycle racing. The series also came about due to increased concerns over continuing to organise Formula TT races at unsafe tracks such as Dundrod at the Ulster GP and the Isle of man.

"While the Formula TT series attracted increasingly larger grids and crowds in the past few years, we at FG Sport knew that the sport couldn't keep going with races such as the Ulster GP and The isle of man TT" Said Series promoter Flammini. "For the sake of both Rider and Spectator Safety, it is crucial that we move away from those kind of events and reform the championship around purpose-built tracks, such as Donington Park and Hockenheim. With World Superbikes, our goal is to not only promote Exciting battles on the track featuring top quality Riders and Machinery, but to also give manufacturers opportunities to sell their high-end production motorcycles off of it. Those two elements put together form what we feel would be a win-win combination for all parties involved."

Flammini's group already benefits from a high prestige, with them successfully assisting in the rebirth of Italian Motorcycle racing in the past few years with its national superbike series, and now, he looks to bring the superbike format to a global scale. 500cc manufacturers Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki have aleady confirmed their participation, and do did 1987 Formula TT-F1 Champions Bimota Corse, who has stated that they will put all of their focus on the new series, using their title-winning Bimota YB4. Fellow Countrymen Ducati will also join the series with their 851 Strada Bike, containging their signature V-twin Engine.

The biggest newcomer, however, would be the arrival of Kawasaki on the international scene. After a very succesful stint in AMA with their american program, Kawasaki will bring its ZXR750 Bike to the world stage. Kawasaki's former american partners Rob muzzy Racing are rumored to be fielding bikes for them in the inaugural season, while Suzuki are looking to team up with long-time Client Hideo Yoshimura and his team.

As for riders, many names from around the world has been mentioned in taking part in WSBK's inaugural season. Kawasaki is seeking to add talented americans such as Doug Chandler, Scott Russell and youngster John Kocinski, while Honda is linked to Irish Folk Hero and 4-times Formula TT Champion Joey Dunlop, American Honda star Fred Merkel and highly-touted English Prospect Carl Fogarty.

Meanwhile, Yamaha is seemingly keen on australian Prospect Michael Doohan, whose performance in the australian superbike scene turned many heads, including some 500cc Teams. Finally, Bimota is expected to keep formula TT title-winning rider Virginio Ferrari, with italian Davide Tardozzi and Belgian Stephane Mertens rumoured to be in the running the other YB4.

The most Notable Rumour, however, is Ducati seemingly targeting French 500cc rider Raymond Roche as a statement signing. After finishing Third in the 1984 500cc Championship, Roche's Grand Prix Career has been tailspinning into the abyss, with last year's disastrous stint with newcomers Cagiva bejng the low point. A Move to Ducati in a new championship in what seems already like a very competitive bike might be tempting for the frenchman, and give a massive credibility boost to the WSBK. More to follow in the coming months.

SCHEDULE REVEALED
_______________________________________

Flammini was far from done, as a 12-round Schedule, organised into 2-race week ends, was revealed to the public during the press conference. Here is the calendar for the inaugural World Superbike Championship:

NORTON TO ENTER BOTH 500cc AND WSBK?
_______________________________________

a surprising development came about yesterday, as british Manufacturer Norton has announced its Intention of Entering its revolutionary RCW 588 Bike in not only The 500cc world championship, but the new World Superbike Championship, as well.

Brian Crighton, head engineer at Norton, announced that they have build a road-going version of their innovative bike, which contains a wankel two-stroke Rotary engine, with the goal of entering the production version into the WSBK. Meanwhile, Crighton stated that Norton will also enter  the 1988 500cc world championship using the Original, purpose-built version of the bike, with the rotary engine detuned to reach the 500cc displacement as per Grand prix rules.

Whether the Norton RCW 588 will appear in the WSBK, however, that's another question entirely. Maurizio Flammini, head of WSBK Promoters FG Sport, clearly stated that WSBK is for bikes with 700 to 1000cc engine Displacement. So if Norton was to enter, they would have to come up with a more powerful version of their rotary engine, something which could take a while to properly build and develop. Crighton, However, is confident that Norton will show up one way or another, and if he had to build another rotary, then he'll gladly do it.

More to follow in the coming months.

ALT-WSBK 1988 RIDER BIDS ROUND 1, FIGHT!
_______________________________________

Alrighty then, let's start with 3-time AMA Superbike champion Fred Merkel

The californian is considered one of the best american riders outside of the 500cc world championship. Honda wishes to continue its winning association with Merkel at Team Rumi RCM, but Rob Muzzy Kawasaki is looking to tempt him away, along with a surprise bid by Dutch ducati outfit DKDR.

1-60: Stay with Honda and go to Team Rumi.
61-90: Joins Rob Muzzy, pissing off soichiro-san
91-100: Has a brain fart and flies to amsterdam.

Results: 20!

Merkel joins Rumi RCM!

Fabrizio Pirovano

The talented italian is a star in the italian superbike championship, and he immediately answered the WSBK Call. The question now is, with which team?

Lucky strike Fior, Bimota Corse and Fast by Ferracci all bid for his services.

1-40: Sign with Bimota Corse, potentially as no.1 rider.
41-60: Sign with ferracci and Ducati.
61-90: Go to Fior
91-100: Waits for other offers.

Results: 94! Pirovano feels all the offers aren't good enough, and he waits on the sidelines!

Stéphane Mertens

A staple of the 250cc championship, the belgian feels that a switch to WSBK might be a good move forward for his career

Attractive Offers from Bimota and Yoshimura Suzuki are his main options, though DKDR have also sent him an offer

RNG:
1-60: Goes to Bimota Corse
61-90: Rides for Yoshimura
91-100: Moves to belgium's next door neighbors.

Results: 89!

For whatever reasons, he seriously considered DKDR, But then, he became sober and signs up with yoshimura

Alex Vieira

The french superbike champion and 1986 le mans 24 hrs moto winner has many offers from mainly smaller teams, With Bimota Corse being the notable exception.

RNG:

1-70: Signs with Bimota Corse
71-80: signs with DKDR
81-95: Signs with Petronas Yamaha
96-100: Does nothing

Results: 54! Bimota Corse finally signs a rider!

Gary Goodfellow

The Canadian Superbike and AMA superbike star has two offers, a full time ride for DKDR, and a part-time schedule with Team Green Kawasaki Deutschland.

RNG

1-60: Signs part-time with Team Green
61-90: Signs full time with DKDR
91-100: Stays in north america

Results: 84! Karel Vandroogenbroeck finally has a teammate!

Doug Chandler

The 1983 AMA Rookie Of the year has impressed a lot of people within the american scene, none more so than Rob Muzzy himself.

While Muzzy offered a full-time ride, Chandler feels that A part-time ride with Team green might be better for his development, and also because he wants to win the AMA Title.

RNG:

1-50: Signs full time for muzzy
51-80: Signs part time with team green.
81-100: Stays in AMA for a shot at the title

Results: 16! Chandler signs for Muzzy!

Doug Polen

Polen caused a stir in the american scene with electrifying performances on suzuki bikes. So much so that hideo yoshimura wishes to hire him.

However, Eraldo Ferracci, the man chosen by Ducati to run their 851 Strada, also caught him in his eye, and is looking to sign him to fill the second ducati seat.

RNG:

1-60: continues with Suzuki at Yoshimura
61-80: Fills the #2 seat at Ferracci
81-100: Stays in AMA

Results: 12!

Davide Tardozzi

After a failed stint in 250cc, Tardozzi is now the reigning 2-time Italian SBK champion. He's looking to move up to WSBK, with the no.1 seat at Bimota Corse being the most interesting option, Though lucky strike Fior also has sent him an offer.

1-75: Signs with Bimota Corse
76-84: somehow signs with fior
85-100: Stays in italy

Results: 47! Bimota Corse Completes its lineup!

Loris Reggiani

The italian is a star in 250cc, Riding the factory aprillia team to victory and great results last season. While he wishes to continue in 250cc with hopes of making it to the 500cc world championship, Lucky Strike fior made an offer for him as their no.1 rider.

RNG:

1-40: Signs with Fior part-time only, earning the rights to skip any rounds clashing with 250cc races
41-60: Signs full time with Fior
61-100: Stays with Aprillia in 250cc.

Results: 36!

Reggiani signs with fior, but earns the right to skip any round clashing with 250cc,
Which leads to lucky strike fior's last bid for their no.1 seat: Fausto Gresini.

1-98: replaces reggiani at clashing rounds
99-100: stays at 125cc, screwing over Fior.

Results: 52.

Mick Doohan

He's been terrorizing the aussie SBK championship with hardwick racing. With Hardwick coming to WSBK, Doohan looks to join him on his international journey, with hopes of attracting the attention of 500cc world championship teams. However, team Rumi RCM has given him an offer for their second seat.

RNG:

1-70: Moves up to WSBK with Hardwick
71-80: Signs with Rumi RCM
81-100: stays in australia and waits for better offers

Results: 98! Doohan is still available!

Raymond Roche

Once one of the top riders in 500cc, the frenchman, who finished 3rd in the standings in 1984, saw his fortunes increasingly declining before absolutely shitting the bed in 1987 with the new Cagiva team.

While he is willing to give Cagiva another chance, an unexpected lifeline appears in the form of Feracci Ducati. The chance of using the WSBK to bring his career back on track is very tempting

RNG:

1-80: Switches to superbikes with Ferracci Ducati
80-100: continues in 500cc with cagiva.

Results: 68! Ferracci and WSBK pulls off a big Coup!

Joey Dunlop

A lifetime honda rider, Dunlop has endeared himself to irish fans with his daredevil exploits in races such as the Ulster GP and the Isle of Man TT. Honda, by way of team Rumi RCM, has offered him their second seat, finally giving this icon a much deserved chance at competing in a top flight series.

However, Dunlop, ever the batshit insane rider, still wants to compete in the ulster GP, isle of man TT and the North west 200.

1-60: Signs with Rumi RCM, but gets the rights to skip any rounds clashing with the Ulster GP, the Isle of man TT and the Northwest 200
61-90: Refuses the offer and goes back to real road racing
91-100: signs full time.

Results: 17!

So team Rumi's next bid, for Dunlop's Substitute, is highly touted brit carl fogarty.

The young man from blackburn turned many heads with his performance in the 1985 isle of man TT. However, he finds himself with only a part-time offer from Rumi RCM.

1-30: Takes the seat, replacing Joey Dunlop at clashing rounds
31-100: Waits until better offers arrive

Result: 69! Foggy waits for a better offer, a full time one, prefferably.

Which means that young italian SBK standout Gianluigi Spinelli partners fred merkel!

Michael Galinski

Usually preffering Yamaha Bikes, the german SBK Champion still thinks team green's offer is very good, what with moving up to top-tier competition.

RNG:

1-90: signs with Team Green
91-100: Stays in Germany and waits for other offers.

Results: 22!

Kevin Magee

The young man from horsham, victoria impressed everybody on the paddock by scoring a podium in portugal as a substitute for Marlboro Yamaha team Roberts in 500cc last season. In fact, Roberts himself is seeking to hire him full time as teammate to reigning 500cc Champion Freddie Spencer.

However, the petronas racing team has made him an offer to ride their yamaha TZR250.

RNG:

1-30: Signs with Petronas
31-100: Goes to marlboro yamaha team roberts in 500cc.

Results: 79!

Which leads to petronas's last bid, Christian sarron's brother Dominique.

Dominique is one of the top riders in 250cc and he is seemingly close to move up to 500cc.

RNG:

1-50: sign with petronas
51-100: Stay in 250 cc with hopes of winning the title and move up to join his brother in 500cc.

Results: 48! He hesitates a lot, but eventually make a shock switch to Superbikes in hope of attracting 500cc teams for next year!.

Mike Baldwin

The former 5 time AMA champion is one of the above average riders of 500cc, with a best finish of 4th in the 1986 standings.

However, a switch to superbikes might give him a breath of fresh air, especially with the below average year he had in 1987.

1-60: Signs with Rob Muzzy kawasaki
61-100: stays in 500cc.

Results: 22!

Marco Lucchinelli

The 1981 500cc world champion has spent the whole of 1987 on the sidelines, taking a sabbatical while competing in a few italian SBK rounds. While originally wanting to come back in 500cc, the World Superbike championship seems an equally tempting offer, especially for the aging vet whose career is coming down to an end.

Lucky Strike Fior made him an offer for their second seat.

RNG:
1-80: Signs with Fior
81-90: goes to 500cc
91-100: stays in italian SBK and retire at the end of the year.

Results: 90! Somehow, a 500cc team snaps up Lucchinelli!

Ron Haslam

One of the most consistent riders in 500cc, haslam surprised everyone by finishing the 1987 season in 4th on the surprisingly competitive, honda-powered ROC Bike.

Despite feeling that the ROC Team has the potential to do some damage this year, BP Racing gave him an offer.

RNG:

1-50: stay in 500cc with ROC
51-100: ROCs the 500cc paddock by leaving for superbikes.

Results: 47! He really hesitates, but in the end, he stays with ROC.

Rob Mcelnea

Mcelnea had a breakout season when he became freddie spencer's teammate at marlboro team roberts, finishing 5th in the standings. However, an injury sidelined him at the end of the 1987 season, which prompted kevin magee to score a podium and steal his seat at roberts for 1988.

While he's been applying to other 500cc teams, a new opportunity arises in BP Racing in the WSBK.

1-80: signs with BP Racing
80-100: somehow, he finds a seat in 500cc.

Results: 57!

Luca Cadalora

One of the hottest prospects in GP motorcycle racing, Yamaha is very high on the youngster. However, an unlikely offer from bimota team Fior in WSBK comes to luca's mailbox.

1-90: Throws the letter in the trash and rides for yamaha in 250cc
91-100: does the unthinkable and signs with fior, under the condition that he becomes the #1 rider.

Results: 8

Donnie Mcleod

The scotsman has been weaving his way to 500cc events both as his own entry and as part of the back markers of the championship. His best results was 10th in the standings in 1986.

BP Racing made an offer for him as a pay rider, what with spending a good chunk to grab rob mcelnea.

RNG:

1-50: Gets the money to ride in WSBK
51-80: Gets money to stay in 500cc
81-100: doesn't have any money and keeps on looking for sponsors.

Results: 96! He's so dirt poor that he can't even afford a racing suit!

Kevin Mitchell

Kevin mitchell is yet another british pay rider. He made 6 starts in 250cc last year. A golden opportunity awaits him in WSBK...that is, if he has the money.

RNG:

1-50: money ain't a problem!
51-80: 250cc, here we come!
81-100: Oh brother, can you spare me two dimes?

Anyways, results: 53! He goes to 250cc!

Steve Manley

After making his 500cc debut as a one off at the 1986 british GP, manley competeed in 4 races in 1987...not doing anything much.
This time, however, he might get a full time ride with BP racing.

1-60: Money money money!
61-90: Manages somehow to return to 500cc
91-100 declares bankruptcy.

Results: 90!!!!!

Malcom Campbell

The tasmanian devil is one of the stars of australian superbikes, winning the title in 1986 by beating mick doohan. With rob muzzy having already filled their lineup, only hardwick racing is left standing.

RNG:

1-90: Joins Hardwick
91-100 stays in australia and wait for more offers.

Results: 4

Rob Phillis

Once again, hardwick is the only offer available for the reigning australian SBK Champion.

1-90: signs with hardwick
91-100: stays in australia and waits for other offers

Results: 2

Hardwick Completes their lineup

Virginio Ferrari

The Reigning (And probably last ever) Formula TT champion found himself on the sideline after bimota corse, the team he rode for last season, ditched him in favour of younger talent. However, ferracci ducati gave him the opportunity to become raymond roche's teammate. The 1979 500cc runner-up knows this is probably his last ride on a competitive bike.

1-80: Signs with ferracci
81-100: Retires.

99! Feeling he has nothing more to give, ferrari retires!

Adrien Morillas

The frenchman is one of the top dogs in the french national scene, winning the 1986 french SBK title and finishing runner-up in the french 500cc series the same year.

The only offer he has is from part-timers team green.

1-90: takes the offer from team green
91-100 stays in france and hopes to get signed by 500cc teams.

Results: 47! Team green kawasaki Deutschland completes its lineup!

Jari Suhonen

Jari suhonen looks to be one of many finnish riders making their mark on the interantional stage, following in the footsteps of the late jarno saarinen. His only offer comes from Uponor Pennanen Suzuki, The only finnish team in WSBK.

RNG:

1-99: signs with UPS
100: has a brain fart and stays in finland

Results: 77!

Bruno Kneubuhler

The swiss veteran, who competed in every class of grand prix motorcycle racing, finally made his full time debut in 500cc last year, finishing 11th in germany and in portugal. Having finally achieved his goal, he is seeking to finish his long-lasting career in either 500cc or in superbikes.

1-50: Signs with romer racing
51-90: Stays in 500cc
91-100 retires

Results: 32! Kneubuhler seeks to finish his career in superbikes!

Wolfgang Von Muralt

His career best result in 500cc aas 8th olace at the swedish grand prix in 1984. Let's see if he has the money to compete in either wsbk or 500cc.

1-50: Goes to WSBK
51-90: Stays in 500cc
91-100: "i thought switzerland was a tax haven!!"

Results: 72! He stays in 500cc

Marco Gentile

The Swiss-Italian's got offers from both römer and Claude Fior's 500cc Team (not related to lucky strike Fior)

1-60: signs with Römer
61-100: signs with claude fior.

Results: 20! Römer racing completes their lineup!

And thus ends the first round of rider bids!

The aussie got two offers: one from ferracci ducati, the other comes from Lucky Strike Fior.

RNG

1-50: Signs with Ferracci
51-90: Signs with Fior
91-100: Refuses both and goes to 500cc to eventually LOLwin

Results: 67! Doohan goes to Fior!

Fabrizio Pirovano

With the Fior Seat already taken by doohan, Pirovano only has ferracci left.

1-90: signs with Ferracci
91-100: Refuses and does something else.

Results: 58!

Carl Fogarty

The talented young brit's only offer comes from BP Racing. While disappointed, they do offer him the full time ride that he wants. Maybe if he impresses, he'll attract the bigger teams's attention...

1-90: Signs with BP in hopes of going to a bigger team next year
91-100: Does something else instead.

1988 WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP Season Preview
________________________________

The time has finally come for a new age of road racing.

FG Sport, the italian firm behind the Italian Suberbike Championship, in association with the FIM and the various Motorcycle associations around the world, presents the World Superbike Championship, the first top-tier series for production bikes.

Through 12 grueling rounds taking place on race tracks from 3 continents, the best riders in the world will drive machines directly ripped from brands that you can buy at the dealership.

For the first ever world superbike meeting, privateer teams from various countries will come to race one another at the historic Donington Park, home of the british motorcycle Grand Prix. Many stars, both from britain and abroad, can't wait to show off their skills in front of enthusiastic motorcycle afficionados.

TEAMS AND RIDERS

All teams will run michelin tires.

Fast By Ferracci (ITA)
Bike: Ducati 851 Strada

Riders:
#21 Raymond Roche
#10 Fabrizio Pirovano

The ducati 851 strada is not just stunning, it is also wicked fast, as was proven during the opening rounds of the italian SBK championship and the Bol D'or and le mans endurance races. Eraldo Ferracci, a long time tuner of ducati's revolutinary V-Twin engines, was hired by the bologna firm to lead their international efforts.

The team pulled off a huge coup by signing french 500cc star Raymond roche as its #1 rider. The frenchman finished 3rd in the 50cc world championship standings in 1984,and looks to put his derailing career back on track. His teammate, fabrizio pirovano, is already familiar with ferracci, being a regular title contender in italian SBK with them.

Team Rumi RCM (ITA)
Bike: Honda VFR750R

Riders:

#12 Fred Merkel
#3 Joey Dunlop and Gianluigi Spinelli

Oscar Rumi, Italian Honda Tuner, is fielding perhaps the best rider lineup of the whole championship. American Honda star Fred Merkel, already 3-time AMA Champion, makes his devut on the international scene, while Irish Folk hero Joey Dunlop finally races in a top-tier series, albeit in a part-time program as he still wants to compete in irish road racing and the isle of man TT. To substitute for him, italian SBK prospect Gianluigi Spinelli will ride in Austria, Canada and Portugal.

Bimota Corse (ITA)
Bike: Bimota YB4

#2 Davide Tardozzi
#4 Alex Vieira

Bimota Corse, the last ever Formula TT champion, opted not to retain the aging Virginio Ferrari, instead going for younger talent. Former 2-time Italian SBK champion Davide Tardozzi, who partnered Ferrari last season, is promoted to main rider, while Le Mans Moto winner Alex Vieira will be his new Teammate. The Bimota YB4 can definitely challenge Ducati and Honda for the title.

Yoshimura Suzuki (JPN)
Bike: Suzuki GSX-R750
#6 Stéphane Mertens
#23 Doug Polen

Since switching from Kawasaki to Suzuki bikes, Hideo Yoshimura has enjoyed unprecedented success in the AMA ranks, winning consecutive AMA Titles with wes cooley and Mike Baldwin, winning both the Daytona 200 and the suzuka 8 hours and, finally, becoming AMA Champion again last year with Kevin Schwantz. After conquering everything in the American and endurance scene, Pops now lays his eyes on WSBK, with belgian 250cc star Stéphane Mertens and American dynamo Doug Polen behind the handlebars.

BP Racing (GBR)
Bike: Yamaha FZR750R

#14 Rob McElnea
#5 Carl Fogarty

Perhaps the most eyecatching lineup for the local fans at donington, Barry Pugh's team used the money from its new sponsor, oil company BP, to sign freddie Spencer's former teammate Rob McElnea and highly touted prospect Carl Fogarty. McElnea might be the more experienced rider of the two, but watch out for young Foggy, he can give front runners a run for their money!

Rob Muzzy Racing (USA)
Bike: Kawasaki ZXR-750

#8 Doug Chandler
#18 Mike Baldwin

For Kawasaki's arrival on the international scene, they gave the keys to Rob Muzzy, who led american honda and Fred Merkel to three consecutive AMA titles between 1984 to 1986 and finished runner up with wayne Rainey in a legendary title duel against yoshimura's kevin schwantz. Having spent a ton of money to lure Muzzy away from honda, and equipped with the fast ZXR-750, Kawasaki hopes for big success right out of the gate. AMA Legend mike baldwin will partner and mentor exciting young prospect Doug Chandler.

(This is what happens when you don't check properly on wikipedia  )

Lucky Strike Fior (ITA)
Bike: Bimota YB4

#7 Loris Reggiani and Fausto Gresini
#27 Mick Doohan

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the paddock is Mick Doohan Ditching both his aussie team boss Jeff Hardwick and ducati to join Italian SBK winner Casta Fior (not related to 500cc Team Owner Claude Fior)'s outfit. Perhaps the biggest prospect in mktorcycle racing, the Aussie SBK champion, who terrorized circuits down under, looks at WSBK as an opportunity to land bigger rides in the 500cc World Championship.

Partnering him will be 250cc Aprillia factory rider Loris Reggiani. However, aprillia put a clause where Reggiani will ride for them at rounds clashing with 250cc, and so 125cc wirld champion Fausto Gresini was chosen as the second rider of the #7 Bimota.

Hardwick Racing (AUS)
Bike: Yamaha FZR750R
#19 Malcom Campbell
#30 Rob Phillis

Despite the setback of not getting Doohan, Jeff Hardwick chose the next best things in Aussie SBK: "the tasmanian Devil" Malcom Campbell and Rob "the boss" Phillis, both former Aussie SBK Champions, both got their rear bumpers kicked by the trail blazing Mick Doohan in the past year. This might be their chance at revenge against Mick.

De Kruiser De Ruyter (HOL)
Bike: Ducati 851 Strada

#78 Karel Vandroogenbroeck
#15 Gary Goodfellow

Named after the sunken WW2 cruiser, of which his Grandfather died on, Karel Vandroogernbroeck's team managed to secure enough funds from Canadian Brewery Molson to compete the full season. The catch is, they had to sign their sponsored canadian Superbike star Gary Goodfellow. The new zealand-born canuck is no slouch, though, as he is a consistent contender for race wins in AMA, culminating with his maiden win at Watkins Glen last season.

Römer Racing
Bike: Bimota YB4
#24 Bruno Kneubuhler
#32 Marco Gentile

Römer racing, an outift from Bern, comes to WSVK following a 4-year stint in 500cc, bringing veteran Bruno Kneubuhler with them, as well as gaining Marlboro Sponsorship from Swiss-talian Marco Gentile. The first 500cc customer team to switch from 500cc to WSBK following the new rules instaured by Illuminardi Sports Entertainement, it is rumoured that many more are looking to make the same jump.

Petronas Racing Group (MAL)
Bike: Yamaha FZR750R
#55 Dominique Sarron

French Ex-racer Hervé Poncharal has been looking to found his own team for a while. After contacting engineer Guy Coulon and old friend Bernard Martinac, Poncharal started the building blocks for a new outfit, seeing the new WSBK series as the perfect opportunity to enter. After much hustling, Poncharal managed to gain sponsorship from none other than malaysian oil company Petronas.

Racing under both the petronas name and the malaysian flag, Poncharal and his crew maNaged to poach frenchman Dominique Sarron from 250cc to ride their yamaha. Sarron sees it as an opportunity to impress 500cc teams and join his brother christian in the upper echelons of GP racing.

Uponor Pennanen Suzuki (FIN)
Bike: Suzuki GSX-R750
#11 Jari Suhonen

Mika Pennanen is a team owner who made it his mission to develop finnish riders in the highest possible level of motorcycle racing, especially following the death of finnish icon Jarno Saarinen. His wish finally came true, after Uponor gave him enough money for a full time program in WSBK, with Jari suhonen as rider.

Flor Bath Honda (ITA)
Bike: Honda VFR750R
#81 Violetta Cacciatori
#32 Zoé Ferrer

Violetta Cacciatori is a veteran of 2-weeled racing, having competed in all classes of GP Racing in the late 70s and 80s. Her 15 minutes of fame came when she managed to win the 1983 Dutch TT in the rain at assen, taking advantage of almost every single front runner crashing out to bring her modest renzo bike to victory lane... or rather, into the wall of cows in the midfield as celebration. After both her and Renzo Engineering got banned from 500cc due to pressure from both PETA and the Indian government on the FIM following the cow murdering incident (and the Renzo bikes being dangers to other riders due to how painfully slow they were), she changed her focus to the less costly WSBK series. After scrapping enough money (who knows where she managed to get it...) to buy two hondas, she hired aspiring spaniard Zoé Ferrer as her teammate.

Ferrer came into the scene by competing in the nearby french SBK series, showing some good stuff in the few rounds she competed in. Her youngest brother, David, is said to be a huge tennis fan, and is always seen swinging a racket.

Team Green Kawasaki Deutschland (Part-time, GER)
Bike: Kawasaki ZXR-750

#28 Michael Galinski
#20 Adrien Morillas

Fred Fuchs is a Kawasaki tuner from Munich, Bavaria, who competes regularly in the german SBK championship. After reaching success in the early 80s, Fuchs earned himself the position of head of the german division of team green kawasaki. He was among the first team owners to answer the WSBK call. Unfortumately, he only got enough money to run the european rounds only.

Still, he's got a decent lineup of german SBK champion Michael Galinski and French SBK and 500cc champion Adrien Morillias.

ALT-WSBK INJURY RNG FOR ALEX VIEIRA
_______________________________________

During Race 2 of the 1988 WSBK round of italy at Misano, Alex Vieira of bimota corse collided with teammate Davide Tardozzi at turn 1, sending both barrel rolling into the gravel.

Tardozzi was fine, but Vieira was limping trying to walk on his own. After heading into the first aid tent, the doctors diagnosis is in...

1-20: aah! Tis but a scratch!
21-40: minor leg injury, will miss the round of france
41-80: a little more severe injury, will miss the next three rounds
81-100: ouch! He misses the rest of the season

RNG Results: 37!

Lucky Alex will only miss the round of france...which is a bummer, since it's his home race

Bimota Corse will have to find a substitute for the round of France!

ALT-WSBK NEWS!!
_______________________________

1989 SCHEDULE REVEALED!

As we head down to japan for the penultimate round of the inaugural World Superbike Championship, FG Sport's president, Maurizio Flammini, has announced before race 1 of the round of portugal that the schedule for next season has been finalised. Here is the aformentioned schedule:

Alt-WSBK 89 Schedule

1. Donington -april 1-2
2. Hungaroring -april 29-30
3. Hockenheim -may 7-8
4. A-1 ring -may 13-14
5. Mosport - june 3-4
6. Road America - june 17-18
7. Imola - july 1-2
8. Paul Ricard - july 22-23
9. Jarama - july 29-30
10. Estoril - august 5-6
11. Sugo - august 26-27
12. Oran Park - september 9-10

NORTON ENTRY INTO WSBK OFFICIAL!

Flammini was not done, however, as he produly announced that british manufacturer Norton will join the world superbike championship for the 1989 season using a special 750cc version of their RCW 588 Bike. The Shenstone firm will fiannly see its ambition of competing in both 500cc, using the original purpose-built RCW588 Model with Niall McKenzie as rider, and the WSBK at the same time fully realised.

"It is a great day for us and Norton" said lead engineer Brian Crighton, who will manage the WSBK factory team under the name Crighton Engineering next season. "We've been working very hard all year long to build a new 750cc Rotary engine, and testing has been going really well. We truly think that the RCW 750 is gonna challenge for top 6 places in our first year of competition"

Norton are in contact with several riders who are becoming free agents next season, chief among them is Irish road racer Robert Dunlop, brother of Team Rumi Honda Rider and reigning Isle of man champion Joey Dunlop, as well as 500cc Rider Ron Haslam, who is currently enjoying a rather disappointing season onboard the ROC bike.

DUNLOP INJURED AT DUNDROD, SPINELLI REPLACES HIM FOR JAPAN

Speaking of Joey Dunlop, we are sad to report that the reigning Isle of man champion and WSBK rider has suffered a bruised elbow during the superbike race at the Ulster GP in dundrod, Ireland. The ulsterman fell off and landed directly on his elbow, putting him out for at least 3 weeks, meaning he will miss the round of japan at Sportsland Sugo. Oscar Rumi, Dunlop's boss, has already announced that his italian SBK rider, Gianluigi Spinelli, who substituted for the ulsterman at rounds clashing with the big 3 events of Real Road Racing, will take his place for japan, with dunlop expected to return in time for the season finale at Oran Park, in Australia.
