Engines

Exactly the same as last year, simply peruse the spreadsheet and pick what engine you'd like. Each engine manufacturer has teams they MUST supply, and teams they CAN supply. If there are two or more tams who are interested in obtaining Alfa or Matra engines, an RNG will be run to determine who gets the contract. Teams bidding for Alfa or Matra engines must also provide a second choice.

Suppliers

Tyres are mandatory, but the other suppliers are optional.

Like tyres, you can only have one active supplier, but you may bid for up to 3 suppliers to fill that slot. Suppliers are in three categories - Petroleum, Lubricants, and Parts. You can bid for 3 suppliers.

Supplier choices can be found on the spreadsheet, along with your current generated chassis stats.

Just gonna add a few filler entries for the flyaway races if that's allowed. Just for the local flavour.

Lexington Racing (south african - only entering south-africa)
Driver 1: Ian Scheckter
Driver 2: Desiré Wilson (as much as i'm tempted to run Jacques Villeneuve Sr. his motorsport experience at that point was just formula ford and honda civics)

Hollywood Racing (Brazilian, entering Argentina and Brazil) with a huge Jesus saves logo on the car!
Driver 1: Alex Ribeiro
Driver 2: Duncan Idaho

Both will run a 77 spec March and a 76 spec Cosworth if that is allowed, if not, a 79 Renzo will do, and the Dunlop+Castrol combo

Ian Scheckter wrote:We are proud of having our nation on the calender yet again, unfortunately we haven't seen many local entrants lately. My brother's doing a great job for our nation but we should remind people that there plenty of talent in here. Like Desiré for example. We got together a small budget thanks to my sponsor Lexington so we can compete, it will not be with the best material, but you never know, if something happens to the main drivers we might qualify! Either way, i hope people don't forget how good South-African drivers can be!

Alex Ribeiro wrote:Christo Salva, Jesus Saves, this message is so important that i'm willing to do everything to spread the word! With help from Hollywood and my compatriot Ingo Hoffman, we can run our local races. We hope to convince some American drivers to join is in the other american rounds. They need Jesus as much as we all do. Competitive? Yes of course, we got the right spirit, so we can move mountains!

Scuderia Everest, the plucky Italian team ran by Giancarlo Minardi, has announced their intention to compete in Formula 2 for 1980. The team have reportedly already secured a supply of BMW engines for their return to the category.

The fate of the Formula 1 team remains to be seen, after already downsizing their operations by entering the European season only.

Autorsport wrote:Boro links up with Lola for 1979 F1 season

It came as quite a shock earlier today in the Formula 1 paddock when the dutch team Boro announced that they had linked up with british company Lola for the season.

Despite having downgraded to only running the european races only, Bob Hoogenboom, one of the team's principals and founders, talks with hope about the new partnership. "We contacted Lola a few weeks ago about a possible chassis for 1979. We had discussions with Eric [Broadley] and we finally concluded that it was the best for both parties if we tried only a part-time schedule for this season."

Broadley confirms Bob's story, and he added that, if the part-time schedule reveals that the partnership has potential, that a full-on attack for 1980 is on the cards. Because of the partnership, Boro now shows up on the F1 entry list as HB Lola Bewaking Alarmsystemen.

The 1979 season starts on March 4th, on the Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez, at Argentina. It concludes at Watkins Glen, on the 7th October. The calendar consists of 17 rounds.

Please change the Boro entry name to what was mentioned on the news, please!

Stuttgart driver Timo Fuchs, not having a drive for Formula 1 for 1979, is exploring the option to run as a privateer.

"I know I have talent and sponsorship money, so I'm rather miffed I didn't get a seat. If I can I'll arrange to run at my home race, and maybe a couple more in Europe if I get a good deal."

The West German driver drove for the Spanish Centro Asegurador team at the end of 1978, but failed to pre-qualify for a grand prix in his 5 attempts. He also raced in the inaugural Dywa Series last year, and claims to have Formula 2 and German Formula 3 experience.

Luton Herald and Post wrote:The Formula One car Luton gave us

The "Spartec G71A" is being run by international racing outfit B&S Fabrications

Local Luton-based racing team B&S fabrications has unveiled their Formula One challenger, so we sent along our local reporter Sue Jawhard to meet the team.

The World Championship of Drivers, and its accompanying International Cup for Manufacturers have long had a tertiary competition, less attractive and less well-known than its two more illustrious classifications but held in equal esteem by Formula One's privateers - those plucky "garagistas" who turn up to open-wheel motor racing's highest table with nothing but a love for racing, and attempt to master a car built and designed for someone else in the hope that they too can be champions at the absolute highest level of motorsports. For many years now, it has been dominated almost entirely by the "constructors", those teams with the resources and knowhow to build their own cars - be they lightning fast or glacial slow - and enter them in the hope of becoming Grand Prix winners alongside the greats: Jack Brabham, Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili and the John Player Team Lotus racing organisation; those lights that shine less brightly, the last few privateers - the likes of Rebaque, Merzario, B&S and such like - are crowded out of the table and left without so much as a point to show for their efforts. In an effort to remain relevant, some have decided - like B&S Fabrications Team Principal Bob Sparshott - that the time is right to try to move up to that top table of constructors by building their own cars for the 1979 season. We will hear now from Bob Sparshott in his own words, as for some reason when he met with the esteemed journalist whose words you currently read, he insisted upon saying his piece in one go and getting back to the factory as fast as his legs would carry him rather than stopping for a pleasant tête-à-tête with yours truly.

In clipped tones, Mr Sparshott said that: "We are very proud to have built our first F1 car, and we hope it proves entirely adequate for our purposes. Now leave me alone, I only came out here for a smoke."

So will the Spartec G71A prove to be a true racing diamond in the rough, a plucky underdog that defies expectations to contest for those elusive World Championship points? Well, this author believes that it could be even if the man who penned it seemed more intent on dodging that question, telling the author that he was "going back into work now" and "locking the door behind him" and "don't come bothering me here again." What an enigmatic figure Bob Sparshott is, and his racing organisation is surely the second-best sports team ever to come out of the unique Midlands town of Luton.

Earthquake at Everest: New Management Makes Last-Minute Changes to 1979 F1 Plans

After rumors of a withdrawal of Scuderia Everest from Formula 1 after showing a reduced schedule for 1979 the Faenza-based team saw a walkout of much of its management staff from what appeared to be a hostile takeover of the team.

Earlier today Giancarlo Minardi announced that Scuderia Everest will have a new team manager for it's F1 team: Santino di Colombo-Ricci. In his first press conference the new manager promised to not rock the boat too much as the formula 1 approaches. "We will stick with the European schedule, and will only make minor changes to our operating procedure for the first few rounds. What will change is our long-term prospects. We will attempt to contest all four non-championship rounds, I promise you that!"

The team declined to comment on any change in investors, as rumors of a potential outright buyout of the team remain.

Don and Bill Whittington are a well-known pair of American racing drivers

Don and Bill Whittington were today stopped at El Palomar Airport in Buenos Aires, Argentina after landing without warning in a privately-owned aircraft which was, in the words of an Airport spokesman, "Full of the cash."

The Whittington Brothers have previously caused quite a stir at the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans for turning up with no known prior racing experience and paying for a Porsche 935 to race in cash, on the eve of the race. Against all expectations, they were also shockingly fast. Whether they intended to do the same at the Argentine Grand Prix is as yet unclear, but when pressed for comment neither Bernie Ecclestone of FOCA, nor Jean-Marie Belestre of FISA, were aware of the Whittington Brothers expressing any interest in Formula One.

More information to follow when it emerges.

Motor Sport Magazine wrote:Galica "still valued" at B&S - Sparshott

Image
Galica has been at B&S for three seasons, but does not have a race seat for 1979.

In what has been a busy and at times incomprehensible off-season, it can be easy to overlook a change of personnel which has, until this point at least, attracted a sum total of zero column inches: the replacement of Divina Galica. The three-time Olympian and three-year veteran of B&S Fabrications, means that she finds herself out of a race seat for the first time since 1975 - although the term "race seat" has at times been a slight exaggeration for a team mired in prequalifying.

"We had to make some difficult decisions this year if we wanted to keep B&S on the grid and to start improving as an organisation," team principal Bob Sparshott said, "and Divina's replacement on the B&S roster this season is absolutely no reflection on her at all."

Indeed, one suspects that it is more a reflection on the amount of personal sponsorship she is able to bring to a team that had been open and honest about its own financial difficulties. However, despite the arrival of Lella Lombardi, Freddy Kottulinsky and others, it is clear that Galica is far from an outsider in the eyes of the Luton team.

"We hope that she'll be happy to run non-Championship events for us," said Sparshott, "and we plan to keep her on as a development driver - although if another team offers her a World Championship race seat then that obviously comes first. She's still valued here, but part of valuing someone is trusting them to make the choices that are best for them."

Galica has competed in ten events for B&S, five of which have come in the World Championship, including the team's best ever finish to date of 12th place in the 1976 British Grand Prix.

Bluescope Racing have decided who will be entering the races for Argentina, Brazil, both United States races and Canada. Unfortualy we tried to get this A.J Foyt or Al Unser but they laughed at us.

Team: Bluescope Racing (USA)
Driver 1: Steve Krisiloff (USA)
Driver 2: Tom Bigelow (USA)
Chassis: March 781B
Engine: Ford Costworth DFV 3.0 V8 1977

Enzo Ferrari, to Italian radio (translated) wrote:"I am proud of how well Mario performed at Buenos Aires today, but I am also very proud of Keke Rosberg. He drove excellently all weekend near enough matching the pace of a two-time World Champion driver. It is just a shame that his race was to be ended so prematurely by a move like that from Tom Pryce.

"The man has only one point to show for his 50 Grands Prix, even though he managed to finish half of them. He had no business trying to fight with a Ferrari, and I think he probably knows that."

Ken Tyrrell, boss of his eponymous team, defended his lead driver Tom Pryce after the Welshman suffered a disappointing debut race for the team. However, according to Tyrrell, there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

This comes as a response to Enzo Ferrari's interview for Italian media after the Argentine Grand Prix, where he criticized Pryce for his part in a collision with Ferrari's Keke Rosberg.

"Tom did a good job today, even though he suffered some setbacks in the race that were quite unfortunate. The incident with Keke was unlucky in my opinion, since Rosberg seemed to have a mechanical issue and Tom, while in tow of Villeneuve's Williams, just didn't see him. It also substantially compromised Tom's race.
I have huge respect for Enzo Ferrari and do think he was quite passionate about it, but calling a talented driver who happened to spend 3 years in uncompetitive machinery "having no business trying to fight with a Ferrari" is not very gentlemanly of him. We are not looking to cause any sort of drama though, and will focus on our performance in Brazil. We have quite a good car this season, after all. I'm sure Tom will bounce back very soon."

Tyrrell also praised the performance of young Robert Kagan, who finished a very promising fourth after being as low as 17th on lap one.

"Robbie produced a stunning drive. He has really stepped up his game in the past six months and I'm really proud - he's a very talented young man, and this certainly wasn't the last we have seen of him in 1979."

(i see the supplier effects aren't yet counted in the chassis list, this should give us a significant drag reduction and race grip bonus though)

His attitude was so shite in 77 compared to Jacques. At least those pay-drivers after him were motivated. Can't believe McLaren is stupid enough to run such a lazy driver, to see him outpaced by that inexperienced Japanese. He thinks the equator runs trough his arse.

Also Gerard what the heck of a dragqueen did you design? You said you solved it but the french suppliers aren't happy you went full American and i've been calling on and off with Jean-Marie, he's also not pleased, you better make this worth it. You got one year to somehow make this merdebox work!

And who is this spanish speaking homme in the team? Oh he pays big money to drive this merdebox? Ok sure, give him some food and shelter.

Also VDS will do the Castrol.

Autosport wrote:"We'll be waitin' for y'all in California" - Whittington

An example of the March 781 car that the Whittingtons apparently have two of.

According to Don Whittington, the younger of the two Whittington brothers who have continued to make waves in motorsports, the pair have already arrived in Long Beach with enough money to make the grid.

The Texan driver said, "Well, the call is there for March and Alfa Romeo. If y'all want to bring us a racecar and an engine to drive with, we've got the cash to hold up our end of the bargain. We'll be waitin' for y'all in California."

According to the Whittingtons, they do not intend to compete in the European leg of the Formula One season, instead setting their sights on Long Beach, Montreal and Watkins Glen. They have also offered the Road Atlanta circuit as a possible non-Championship race venue because "what's the point in buyin' a racetrack if you don't wanna race on it?"

As of yet, nobody within the Formula One paddock has offered any comment about this brash pair of Americans. More to follow if and when it emerges.

OOC - If you prefer not to include the Whittington Brothers in proceedings, could they perhaps have an entry on the Wiki that simply lists them as "Excluded"?
