ATS Kauhsen team boss Günter Schmid has announced that the team has terminated their active contract with Rolf Stommelen, who is still recovering from injuries sustained at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix.

"It's unfortunate that we had to do this while Rolf is still recuperating, but Jochen Mass has shown great promise and we need a good driver for the whole season if we're going to stand any chance at scoring points."

Fastest Lap: Jody Scheckter - 1:26.439
Drive of the race: Jean-Pierre Jabouille - the Renault's race pace left much to be desired, but the Frenchman brought the teapot to the finish AND avoided at least 3 attempted hits on the way to third on the rostrum.
Reject of the race: Rene Arnoux - spinning and almost taking out front-running cars is one thing. Rejoining the track in a boneheaded location and taking out your team-mate is another.

Although the team is said to be happy with the strong start to the 1979 season - the two French drivers have been told to "shape up or ship out" and have been threatened with disciplinary action up to and including termination.

De Telegraaf, poorly translated by the Dutch guy down the pub wrote:Samson Re-evaluating Motorsports Commitments

Rolling tobacco company Samson Shag have today announced that the company is re-evaluating it's future as a sponsor of the Ensign Formula One Team, after Dutch hero Jan Lammers was evicted on discriminatory grounds. The Dutch hero, 22, has had a brilliant start to the season, on average setting a time close to experienced Ronnie Peterson, and only being denied a place on the grid due to flagrant anti-Dutch sentiments within Formula One.

Autosport wrote:Fuchs to replace Lammers at Ensign

Mo Nunn's Ensign team have today announced the Jan Lammers will be replaced by Timo Fuchs from the South African Grand Prix onwards, after the Dutchman failed to qualify for two races in a row. However, the situation could continue to get worse for the British squad as Dutch news sources reveal that the team's major sponsor, Samson Shag rolling tobacco, is close to pulling out due to a lack of Dutch representation within the team.

It is understood by Autosport that Fuchs brings a small personal sponsorship package to the team.

Auto Motor und Sport wrote:Fuchs to replace Lammers at Ensign

Ensign confirmed that Timo Fuchs will replace Jan Lammers at their F1 team starting at the South African Grand Prix. The enigmatic driver from Stuttgart attempted F1 starts with the team now known as Madom, as well as participation in the Dywa Series.

"I am excited to get another crack at F1. I know the team is in a hot seat, but they are making a sound investment with me!"

Fuchs brings sponsorship from Radeberger Gruppe with their Gilden Kölsch alcohol brand. This adds onto a potential legal battle between Ensign and tobacco firm Samson Shag, who insist on the team running a Dutch driver. Fuchs has declined to comment on rumors of him switching to Dutch nationality.

Daily Telegraph wrote:Balestre: Bernie's in it for the money

In the world of Formula One, money is to racing what oxygen is to humans. The Formula One Constructor's Association, lead by business mogul Bernard 'Bernie' Ecclestone, has stepped into the fray as the leading power player, brokering deals with the circuits to hold races and organising the majority-British based teams to fight against what they see as a lack of professionalism and equity in the sport. Jean-Marie Balestre, head of Formula One's governing body Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA), alleges that Ecclestone's principles aren't quite so noble.

"He's only in it for the money" said Balestre at his home in France. "He believes anybody should be allowed to turn up and race, no matter the seriousness of the team, no matter how much they disgrace the sport."

Balestre also claims Ecclestone took a bribe to allow underqualified Brazilian drivers to race at last weekend's Grand Prix.

"Jesus Saves racing were not approved by FISA, they were not prepared, they were slow, they impeded with the running of the sport"

However, rest of article obscured by bean juice from a full-english

No Angel: The Secret Life of Bernie Ecclestone, Page 256 wrote:If Balestre thought he could intimidate Bernie in the British press, he had another thing coming.

"He spoke to the Telegraph early in 1979. His argument was that I was only in it for the money. Accepting any old man and his dog into the races to make a quick quid. Pointed out that some Brazilian team shouldn't have been allowed to race.

At the time, I was in the middle of negotiating with the Brazilian automotive club to bring the Brazilian Grand Prix back to Formula One for the next 4 years. The interest at the time in the country was massive. Nelson [Piquet] had just made his full-time debut, Emerson [Fittipaldi] had just come off the back of a successful season at Alfa, demand was huge. Turns out, the Club President was friends with Alex Ribeiro, and a condition of the deal was that his team be allowed to race in 1979."

By signing the contract, Bernie had won the battle, but the war with FISA would rage on.

Randrew Damnson, CHIEF Formula 1 Correspondent

Image
Big shoes for a small man: Bernie Ecclestone leads the FOCA crusade

Formula One finds itself at a chicane, a left-and-right, a tricky set of turns as it prepares itself for its fourth decade as the world's premier racing championship.

The sport has always been ambitious, and has welcomed ambitious individuals into its ranks, but there is the sense that some of those ambitions may run contrary to one another.

Whether the bites of Belestre and Ecclestone match up to their respective barks, they have both been very barky.

Image
Ecclestone's adversary is Jean-Marie Balestre, who is aggressively French.

Who is involved?

The protagonist in this quest for Formula One to professionalise and become profitable is one Bernard Charles Ecclestone, a former garage owner and occasional racing driver who attempted to qualify for Mercedes a dozen times in the 1950s with mixed success.

But he is a business man, and his real flair was for owning racing cars, not driving them.

He is up against Jean-Marie Balestre, so much the establishment man that he was able to work for the SS during World War Two, then after hostilities ended convinced the French Resistance that he had in fact been working for them.

Each of these figures has the backing of a substantial portion of the Formula One grid.

Image
Enzo Ferrari, the eponymous owner of the famous racing team.

The manufacturers' man

Jean-Marie Balestre's FISA has the support of the major automotive companies currently working within Formula One.

These companies include Ferrari, Renault, Alfa Romeo and Matra (via the Ligier team), and have also won the backing of Arrows North Star despite them seemingly being a more natural FOCA ally.

Ferrari, of course, is the oldest and most successful team currently on the Formula One grid, and secured a major victory in the off-season by persuading reigning World Champion Mario Andretti to join their squad.

Image
On the other side of the fence, Colin Chapman of Lotus.

What about the "racers"?

Of course, not all the teams in Formula One have the backing of an automotive industry.

Colin Chapman's Lotus team is the reigning World Champion, and in return for the loss of Mario Andretti poached former World Champion Jody Scheckter straight back from the Scuderia.

Teams like Lotus - the "Constructors" who build their own chassis then buy the engines to power them from either Ford Cosworth or Renzo Engineering - believe that Bernie Ecclestone holds the key to their continued presence in the sport.

Image
With all of this going on in the background, Formula One will continue on its way to Kyalami.

So what next?

I don't know, I'm still trying to figure out how to write paragraphs of two or more sentences in length.

Some news report wrote:Balestre "unprofessional", says Williams

Reacting to allegations of corruption made by FISA president Jean-Marie Balestre against FOCA leader Bernie Ecclestone, Frank Williams has taken the side of the Brabham boss.

"There was nothing unusual at all about Jesus Saves Racing, except for the name maybe. We've seen countless such entries come and go since the championship began. Why single them out like that when we still have Dydo Monguzzi turning up to pre-qualifying sessions to waste time and endanger other drivers? I think it's pretty telling."

"If Balestre thinks foul play was involved, he needs to present the evidence. To make such far-reaching allegations, without any proof to back him up, is simply unprofessional. Balestre continues to engage in divisive rhetoric instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of the independent teams that form the backbone of this championship. Our sport deserves better."

According to Ferrari, the most prominent FISA team, his team were not even aware of Jesus Saves Racing's presence at the circuit. "By the time we'd finished assembling our cars, Alex Ribeiro and his team had already left. We never actually saw them, and that's how it should be. Running around pre-qualifying with a couple of ancient Marches. There's only one reason for Mr Ecclestone to have them in."

Quite why Valentino Nicchi wasn't considered for the second Jesus Saves Racing drive remains unclear, but nobody is quite bothered enough to contact Mr Ribeiro for comment.

Buoyed by a sudden interest in his services since his switch from motorcycle racing - Valentino Nicchi is available for competent teams at the Italian and San Marino Grands Prix as well as open to listen to any decent offers for the non championship races. If you race an old March he isn't going to call you back.

Samson Shag and Jan Lammers, we at Team Ensign would like to truly apologize for the absolute mess we have made of our deal with the Samson Shag sponsorship and the contract of Jan Lammers. We would like to bring Jan Lammers back to Team Ensign for the remainder of the 1979 season, and if he does well, we would strongly consider renewing our partnership with Samson Shag and Lammers for another season.

The signing of Timo Fuchs was one that was rushed and full of misleading statements on his true pace. We were promised someone who could qualify, and clearly, that was false, but we have full faith that Lammers and Petersen can take the team and qualify.

We hope that our mistake can be forgiven, and we can once again reunite Samson Shag and Team Ensign.

Drive of the race: Harvey Jones: Cool, calm, and collected on his way to his long-awaited first Formula One points.
Reject of the race: Didier Pironi: A spin? £hundreds in repair costs. A spin from the lead of the race that ruins your team-mate's afternoon? Priceless.
Dishonourable mentions:
1. Mario Andretti: A spin caused by a throttle-happy exit of the last corner in the Ferrari cost Mario any chance of his first 79 victory. Didn't win ROTR as he managed to keep it going and recover to 3rd place
2. Williams rel: Both cars broke down. Villeneuve is still yet to finish.
What about...: Brabham? Hunt was unlucky to be caught up in the turn 1 tomfoolery. Piquet was slightly blinded and ran into the back of a teapot. Despite running at the blunt end of the field for most of the race, the duo managed to use the new car to great effect and catch up with the pack. Recovering to 9th and 11th prevented a ROTR here.

Whilst it's early day, Ligier will run a proper second driver at their home races in Monaco and France.
In order of preference:
-Patrick Tambay (he did race for us last year and Guy greatly appreciated his feedback and racecraft)
-Patrick Depailler (we'll hes out of a job anyway)
-Jean-Pierre Jarier

If they al decline, "Michel Vailant" will get the call after his succesful Dywa GP series.

Fastest Lap: Mario Andretti - 1:39.149
Drive of the race: Jochen Mass: Two points in an ATS? Enough said.
Reject of the race: Keke Rosberg: A kamikaze dive into Nurmester at the final hairpin was never going to work. Earned a DSQ to boot for taking out the championship leader.
Dishonourable mentions:
1. Renault rel: Didier Pironi drove an excellent race and was looking likely to take Renault's first victory. Teapot time put paid to that.
2. Tyrrell Rel: Pryce was likely to jump Pironi on strategy due to the Train Of Death until retirement put paid to that.
What about...: Chris Pook? F1 races are meant to be 2 hours, Chris....

Autosport wrote:Peugeot to enter Formula 1?
Substantial rumours allege that Peugeot is preparing for a factory Formula One entry for the 1980 season. French motorsport is currently in a golden era, with the company allegedly looking to capitalise on the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" philosophy to boost sales for the recently-acquired Talbot brand.

Sources in the FFSA indicate that Peugeot could look to invest in a current team as a way ti build on existing expertise. The leading candidate for such a move is Ligier, who after another tepid performance at the United States West Grand Prix were relegated to pre-qualifying, a situation deeply hurting French national pride.

Autosport wrote:Chris Pook: Long Beach is "crown jewel"
In response to recent criticisms of the standard of professionalism of the Long Beach Grand Prix, organiser Chris Pook has re-iterated the "crown jewel" nature of the west-coast event.

"Long Beach is the premier American Grand Prix. It's a real crown jewel on the Formula One calendar, a race to rival Indy [500] and Monaco."

Accusations of rigging the race were made against Pook, after organisers allowed the race to continue past the conventional two hour time limit for Formula One events. Although not a strict rule, it has been common practice to run Formula One races to under two hours for quite some time. The extended race saw American favourite Mario Andretti win the race after Renault's Pironi broke down from the lead.

"Any suggestion that we let the race run longer to allow Mario [Andretti] to win is nonsense" said Pook.
"Of course, as an American, I'm satisfied with the result - but I'm more satisfied with the intense on-track battle between the leaders. If we'd called that early, it would have been just as unpopular"

The future of the Grand Prix, a FOCA-contracted event, remains in the balance.
