With rising costs of the Super Touring era of the BTCC causing a decline in entries, a change in regulations for British Touring Car racing was announced early in 1999. Inspired by the changes recently made for Australian touring car racing, the BTCC will adopt the same Group 3A regulations used in what is now the V8 Supercar Championship and be promoted as the Dunlop British Supercar Championship from the 2000 season. The regulations have also been adopted by the German, French and Italian championships but it is the British championship that we will focus on.

In an additional attempt to cut down costs, full factory backed teams will be banned and teams themselves cannot build their own cars. Instead manufacturers will develop cars to sell to teams at a set price which also covers engines. Though they can no longer run full on teams, manufacturers can still provide partial sponsorship and drivers to teams that run their cars.

Dunlop becomes the series title sponsor and also the sole tire supplier, their tire supply cost covered by each team's entry fee.

2000 Calender

12 meetings will be run during the 2000 season. There will be a variety of race formats as listed below. Street and endurance races will be held including a return of the Birmingham Superprix and the introduction of the Nordschleife 1000 held at the Nurburgring in a joint effort with the German championship.

SuperSprint - One 30 minute qualifying session and two 100 km races held on Saturday, one 30 minute qualifying session and one 200 km race held on Sunday.

SuperStreet - One 30 minute qualifying session and one 250 km race each held on Saturday and Sunday.

Silverstone Format - Supporting the British Grand Prix. One 30 minute qualifying session and two 75 km races on Friday, one 75 km race on Saturday, one 75 km race on Sunday. The race results of the first race decides the grid for the next.

Donnington Format - One 30 minute qualifying session and one 150 km race held on Saturday, one 30 minute qualifying session and one 250 km race held on Sunday.

Enduro - Two events will run an enduro format featuring co-drivers. The Snetterton 500 and the Nordschleife 1000. Qualifying for the Snetterton 500 involves a 30 minute session followed by a pair of qualifying races held on Saturday. The Nordschleife 1000 features an hour long qualifying session on Friday followed by a top ten single lap shootout on Saturday. Raceday for both is held on Sunday, 500 km for Snetterton, 1000 km for the Nordschleife.

The following cars are being developed by manufacturers to sell to teams at the set price of £250,000. This price also includes engines. Manufacturers are restricted to building a maximum of six cars per season.

It looks like we will end up with more applications for RECs than the 32 limit at this rate. Don't let this stop you from applying for four RECs if you want them but be prepared to not receive all the entries you have asked for if this happens. Higher budget teams will be more likely to receive all the entries they ask for. You will receive the money back from any rejected entries though you have the option to keep the extra cars as spares.

Well the turnout is a little disappointing, I'm amazed no one has snapped up Triple Eight yet. I'd like Triple Eight to be taken but the rest of the teams I'll probably just babysit myself as one car teams till someone is interested. I'll give this another few days for Triple 8 to be taken then move on to the next stage.

The 32 RECs have been assigned. As there were more applications than RECs available, some of you haven't received all of the RECs you wanted, in which case you have been reimbursed. You still have all the cars you have ordered, you can either send back the extra cars and be refunded or keep them around as spares in case your other cars are damaged.

Though I will babysit Tech-Speed for now, they are officially still available as the only remaining team.

We move on to the next stage of pre-season. Driver and sponsor bids followed by the always entertaining RNGs. Driver and sponsor bids will be posted in the opening post shortly. You need to submit your bids for both (maximum three driver and sponsor bids per entry).

Yes but expect to see competition from the other national championships, certainly for foreign drivers. All three of those you mentioned are Honda works drivers at this point, none of them have ever been particularly tied to the BTCC like say Menu and Rydell have and are likely to be assigned to Honda efforts elsewhere. Tarquini certainly has been sent to the Italian championship. If you were running Hondas you'd have a better chance but I'd say Kox is your best bet of the above if you can somehow give him a better offer than Honda can.

I forgot all about Gary Ayles as a racing driver. I've not seen any record of him racing past 1996 but I guess he could dust off the cobwebs to be a co-driver.

For the record you are not restricted to just the drivers I listed above, those are just the drivers actually looking at racing in this series. Theoretically there is nothing stopping you from bidding for say... Schumacher even but he'd most likely laugh in your face.

For MG's tentative first steps into the new era of the BTCC, WSR are more than happy to accept Jonny Kane and Warren Hughes as works drivers for 2000, with both being evaluated for 2001 and beyond. In the third car, we're gonna go all out and bid £850,000 for the lovely Yvan Muller. Failing that, I'll offer Laurent Aiello the same amount, and as third choice I'll go with the not so lovely Jason Plato for £750,000.

As for sponsors, I'm not 100% sure if the sponsors that don't specify two cars after them are only available for one car, or what the situation is there. No doubt it's me being a mong, but hey ho.

Basically I'm gonna stick my eggs entirely in the Vodafone basket for two of the cars, with the third to be covered by the RAC, and if we don't get that then BP are my next priority for the two factory drivers, with RapidFit for Yvan's car as a backup.
