2005 Pau Grand Prix - Results

Post by Aislabie »

Race Report
On a tight and winding track like the Circuit de Pau, the driver's ability makes a huge difference. It was highly-rated McLaren junior Lewis Hamilton who set the pace through practice and qualifying, marginally ahead of Arden's Robert Doornbos on the front row. On the second row were iSport's Roberto Streit and guest Super Nova driver Sébastien Loeb. The other driver to particularly impress was Adrian Sutil, who managed to put his STT2 car ahead of Michael Devaney's Zele Racing STT1 on the grid.

Crucially, Hamilton got away well which would always prove to be decisive on a track where overtaking is so ludicrously difficult. As the race went on, it would be Sébastien Loeb who set the fastest pace right up until he hit a Doornbos-shaped roadblock that he couldn't get past. When a spin from Doornbos ultimately did let the Frenchman past, it was fruitless thanks to a mechanical failure on his car. As a result, Roberto Streit and Adrian Zaugg completed the podium, holding firm against a pair of charging DAMS Cars. Simon Pagenaud drove well for BCN, but his poor qualifying run meant that it counted for little.

The big talking point, however, was the collision between the back end of Alvaro Parente's punctured BCN and the front end of Richard Antinucci's Zele. It would take both of them out of the race, as well as destroying a foam board near a braking zone. This would ultimately cost the sole AEZ entrant, Patrick Lemarié, who later explained that he had been using it as his braking marker. Regardless of whether this was the case or simple driver error, Lemarié would be the seventh of nine drivers not to reach the finish line.

There may not have been any Championship points on offer, but Lewis Hamilton's win netted a very useful 100,000 of prize money for his Super Nova team. Next up, the first Championship event: the Belgian 3000.

I can if you want - thought I'd see how this format goes down but I welcome any and all feedback.

So - grids for Championship rounds?

Great start to the season! Well done Lewis! This is hopefully the start to a wonderful season for us.

Was nice to have Sébastien Loeb join us for Pau too, did a really good job for someone who had never driven a single-seater, hopefully we can welcome him back in the future with further appearances.

Yeah, primarily so I can find out if Alex Yoong is the reincarnation of B Bira by making a heroic climb up the field to eighth or if Jan Heylen's tyre robbed the second coming of Jacques Swaters of a glorious STT2 victory...

At least, that's Team Astromega's narrative and we're sticking to it.

Good start so far for Ma-Con with 6th place for de Oliveira in Pau. Though Nissany didn't have problems to finish 13th, that's not bad of a race for him.

In Belgium we hope to replicate, but it'll be difficult race this time.

2005 Belgian 3000 - Qualifying

Post by Aislabie »

Qualifying Report
Well, the longest circuit on the Formula 3000 calendar has thrown up an interesting set of qualifying results. Once again, the relatively unknown Roberto Streit pulls out an excellent qualifying to be up at the business end of the grid, but it is the well-funded Arden team which once again dominated the session. Pau Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton came back down to earth somewhat, slotting into fifth place. The stand-out driver, however, was Enrico Toccacelo: the Italian STT2 driver breaking into the top ten with a stellar lap.

The full grid is as follows:

Oh sorry, I absolutely missed the PMMF for a while... I'm announcing my full management of iSport from now.

I'm happy with keeping both Streit and Hirate for the time being.

2005 Belgian 3000 - Results

Post by Aislabie »

My apologies for the delay here; posting the grid and the race in separate posts meant that when my computer installed updates it lost the race results. I've been reconstructing them as best I can, but have at least made sure nobody is disadvantaged.

Race Report
Spa-Francorchamps is the opposite of the season-opening Circuit de Pau, and engine power would be far more of a factor. This was shown clearly to be the case by the fact that six of the top seven places on the grid were occupied by Mugen-powered cars, with only Lewis Hamilton able to break the monopoly in P5. Further back, Enrico Toccacelo would be spending the opening section of the race looking into his mirrors, having somehow managed to slot his STT2 car into P10 on the grid.

The opening lap was frenetic; the pole-sitting Doornbos got somewhat bogged down off the line, allowing Striet, Zaugg, Briscoe and Hamilton to pass. The young Australian in particular managed to make huge gains, jumping straight into a dogfight for the lead with Streit. Further back, Toccacelo found himself in the unfortunate position of staying ahead of the three STT1 cars that started behind him on the grid. It would be Alex Yoong who ultimately broke the stalemate by breaking the Lola-Zytek of Toccacelo; a divebomb on the second lap took the Italian out of the race, and left Yoong with damage that would eventually end his race.

Further forward, reliability was predominantly good: Simon Pagenaud experienced mechanical difficulties and was forced to retire on Lap 6, but the top four were still running quite close together. However, the lone non-Mugen of those four, the Dallara-Nissan of Hamilton, was having to be driven hard to keep up, and it eventually gave up the ghost just after halfway. This left Briscoe, Streit and Doornbos trading feints and passes for the lead until the Dutchman fell back slightly. The leading two, however, would continue to joust until the very last corner, out of which it was Roberto Streit who came out ahead and would win the race by less than half a second.

Around a minute and a half later, Kohei Hirate came in to take the STT2 win, having benefited from the retirements of both Toccacelo and Sutil in front of him. This gave iSport a clean sweep of both STT1 and STT2 wins, a result that will delight their team principal.

Great job from Lewis staying with the Mugen-powered cars for most of the race and to Giedo for getting on the podium for the first championship STT2 race.

We are currently considering the possibility of upgrading Lewis’ car to a Mugen engine but we will wait a couple of rounds and would like to hear from the driver himself whether this upgrade would be worth it as we have lots of trust in the young driver.

Close at the end for de Oliveira, but unfortunate no points for him and it's a good race nonetheless for us. Nissany was pretty good as well and scored some points for Ma-con in STT2 championship, which is impressive and not bad.

I wish there was some prize money in the STT2 cup too, maybe just a nominal amount for the top-3 or something. Going to be a long season otherwise, especially if Durango's drivers keep up the form of finishing behind Nissany...

DAMS congratulates Briscoe for his podium finish in Belgium. The team will monitor to see which car/engine setup is more effective and will plan accordingly.

Team Astromega would like to clarify what Alex Yoong did clearly wasn't a "divebomb" on Toccacelo. Instead, it was a calculated manouver intended to clear the way for the unbelievably talented Jan Heylen to progress up the STT2 rankings.

Of course, his calculations were a little off and eliminated both competitors from the race, so apologies to Enrico, and your definition of "unbelievably" in "unbelievably talented" in regards to Heylen may vary, but we digress. It was a very good outing for us, and we wish for more of the same in the future.

Just don't wipe yourself out next time, Alex.

Given that there have been no driver changes ahead of this race, the entry list for the Czech 3000 remains unchanged from Spa-Francorchamps.

However, if you do want to make changes or nominate a guest driver then I'll hold on until Monday before I sim anything.
