2005 Alternate F1 Season-A Little Wacky Story

Post by Shawn040217 »

Following a somewhat staid 2004 which saw Ferrari and Michael Schumacher dominate for the fifth consecutive running, and rumblings about spiralling costs in the sport, just before the final race of 2004 the FIA has introduced a set of new regulations designed to reduce the overall gaps in performance between the teams, as well as to entice new manufacturers and teams into the sport.

-Reduction of rear wing width from 1000 mm to 850 mm and an increase in height from 800 mm to 920 mm, and an increase in width from 1400 mm to 1700 mm.

-New qualifying format: Qualifying is split into two sessions, Q1 and Super Pole. The top 10 fastest drivers from Q1, which is a 35-minute session, progress to Super Pole, while the slowest 10 drivers are eliminated. Following that the 10 remaining drivers will go out on track one at a time for two laps, with the faster time being used to determine the first 10 positions.

- Refueling is banned in order to save travel costs, as well as to improve pitlane safety.

-Three normal tire compounds: Soft, Medium and Hard, in addition to the intermediate and wet rain tyres. Softs are designed to be super grippy but fade away after a couple of laps. Mediums are designed for an optimal balance between speed and wear. Hards are slower but ultra-durable, and new regs allow for drivers to complete the race on one set of tires.

-Every team gets equal TV revenue, prize money given out based purely on results every year.

Here are the Driver Lineups(Part 1 of 2)
Warning: Close your eyes before you read this.

Scuderia Ferrari
1: Michael Schumacher (GER)
2: Juan Pablo Montoya (COL)

Well, that's a change! Rubens Barrichello's shock decision to leave the Scuderia after five years of loyal service has shook up the structure somewhat, with hot-headed Colombian Montoya being appointed. Schumi made it clear of his unapproval of the move, and there have been rumors of bad blood forming between the pair, even before the first race. With the new regs reducing their pace gaps, and the likes of Williams,Renault and McLaren breathing hard down their necks, this could be a long year for the lads from Maranello....

BAR Honda

3. Rubens Barrichello (BRA)
4. Takuma Sato (JPN)

BAR may have lost Jenson Button to Williams, but they have certainly got a fat, fat check out of it.The signing of Ferrari refugee Barrichello should be a pretty good one, while Takuma Sato will be looking to improve from 2004 which saw him nab one podium finish. Pre-season proved to be a challenge for the team, with lack of power from its Honda V10 as well as chassis issues proving a bugbear, but if there's one thing the boys and girls from Tochigi have, it's cash, and they will certainly pump in a lot of it in order to get to the top....

Ligier Renault Sport F1

5. Fernando Alonso (ESP)
6. Sebastien Bourdais (FRA)

Renault underwent a little name change in the off-season, with the return of the Ligier name to the sport with the help of Alain Prost, Jacques Lafitte and of course, Guy himself, adding a bit more French blue to the car. Following Jarno Trulli's sacking towards the end of 2004, Renault have taken a chance on Sebastien Bourdais, who dominated Champ Car last season but still remains an unknown quality, while Fernando will be looking to make full use of a solid all-rounder car in search for his first World Championship.

Williams Martini BMW

7. Jenson Button (GBR)
8. Scott Dixon (NZ)

Williams secured a major sponsor in the form of Martini, who make a comeback for the first time since 1979. The loss of the talented Juan Pablo Montoya to Ferrari certainly hurt, but 2004 third-placed man Jenson Button should make up for it, while Kiwi Scott Dixon moves from IRL after impressing Frank Williams in a test last season, and the man himself thinks he's got real potential. Combine that with a decent chassis and yet more power from the BMW V10, and it's no surprise that the guys from Grove are targeting a bit more than just race wins in 2005....

West McLaren Mercedes

9. Kimi Raikkonen (FIN)
10. Dario Franchitti (GBR)

Following a somewhat disappointing 2004, McLaren will be hoping to challenge for the world title once again, and pre-season showed that they are the ones that are most likely to knock Ferrari off the top.The surprise depature of David Coulthard to sportscars was a shock, and while test drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Alex Wurz were highly tipped to fill the seat, McLaren managed to lure the Flying Scotsman Dario Franchitti from IRL. Franchitti, thankfully, has adjusted to his new car and surroundings very quickly, and Kimi Raikkonen even commented " I think he will trouble me a couple times the season, he's damm impressive, very nice guy" which suggests their relationship is all good and dandy, even in these early days, which could certainly play into McLaren's hands this season, unlike their Maranello counterparts....

Petronas Sauber Projekt Rennen
11. Felipe Massa (BRA)
12. Nick Heidfeld (GER)

The plucky guys from Hinwill, this year sporting a wholly Petronas-green/blue livery, are known for their underdog status and their ability to puch above their weight, and the new regs certainly give them hope that they can do more than that in 2005. Nick Heidfeld moves across from the ailling Jordan team, clinging on to the faint hope he might get in a top team someday, while Ferrari young driver Massa will definitely be looking to show more of the flashes of pace he showed in 2004....

Panasonic Toyota Racing

14. Jarno Trulli (ITA)
15. Andre Lotterer (GER)

Toyota look to get the monkey off their back this year, the team targeting a couple of podiums with their car looking finally justifiable of their megalomaniac resources. Jarno Trulli is known for his qualifying skill, and with Olivier Panis choosing to step back to testing duties, Toyota responded by poaching Andre Lotterer from Honda, the German having finished 2nd in Formula Nippon in 2004, and like the other rookies this season he will be looking to impress.

Minardi Ferrari

16. Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA)
17. Robert Doornbos(HOL)

The underdog team that fans secretly love received a welcome reinvigoration in the off-season, with the acquisition of powerful Ferrari engines and more advanced aerodynamics. As part of the deal, Giancarlo Fisichella steps into the first seat, bringing talent to the team, while pay-driver Robert Doornbos has impressed in junior formulae as well. All these could well make Minardi the regular points-scoring team they so badly dream to be...

Jordan Grand Prix-Toyota

18. Anthony Davidson (GBR)
19. Tiago Monteiro (POR)

Eddie Jordan's team enters 2005 in a fairly bleak state, with a few Russian and Indian investors just about pouring enough money for them to continue into this season. BAR test driver Davidson finally gets his first real crack at F1, while Tiago Monteiro will be looking to comfound the pay-driver critics, but there is only so much they can do with an fairly undeveloped car.

Audi Sport Formula One Team-Cosworth

20. Mattias Ekstrom (SWE)
21. Jacques Villeneuve(CAN)

Jaguar's withdrawal from F1 left a hole in the grid in which Audi, with big budgets, quickly stepped in. Their huge resources will certainly allow them to succeed, but the same perception has been made of Toyota, while their prior experience of working with Cosworth on their Le Mans car will surely help them on the engineering front. 1997 World Champion Jacques Vileneuve has been appointed to lead the driving strength, but nearly everyone in the paddock agree his best years are truly behind him, while reigning DTM champ Ekstrom will be looking to do well in his debut season in F1.

See you in Melbourne!!
