Cheers Shawn, feel free to just refer to me as F1LH for short, if it's easier. In fact I should see if I can get my username changed, as I originally created this profile to give my YouTube channel a plug & have just sort of lurked around ever since. I've only had a quick geez at these comps in recent times, so apologies in advance if I make any naff posts.

Driver bids.

Seat 1:
Alain Menu: 400.000
Laurent Aïello: 350,000
Yvan Muller: 300.000

Seat 2:
Roberto Ravaglia: 300.000
Jorg Muller: 250.000
John Bintcliffe: 200.000

Since F1LH posted his driver bids four days early, here comes the driver signings then. Woohoo!!

Let the raffle begin!!
First on the block is Alain Menu, who literally owned 1997, but for some reason Renault don't actually want him. He does, however, receive three equally tempting offers from other manufacturers interested in hiring the services of one of the best tin-top racers around.
1-40 Goes for the safe choice in Ford
41-60 Takes a gamble with Peugeot
61-100 Joins Nissan as they continue their steady development towards success
And it's...97! Nissan lands a big deal with the Swiss driver.
As for Matt Neal.....
1-100 Dynamics
52...meh. Neal hopes to finally win races and establish himself as one of the best.
Up next is Lee Brookes, who receives an offer from....himself.
1-100 Brookes
..48 it is then.
Rickard Rydell is up next. Following a strong year with the sleek 850, Rydell is hungry for more, so it's a no-brainer really...
1-100 Volvo
It's....a 96.

Following that is 1997 Renault Spider Cup champ Tommy Rustad, who has received two offers as well as another from the STCC. So...
1-55 Signs a deal with Nissan-running Elgh Motorsport in STCC
56-70 Lands a factory drive with Ford
71-100 Goes for the less attractive offer at Mardi Gras
The RNG reads....2! Tommy heads back to Scandinavia.
Next in line is Gabrielle Tarquini, '94 BTCC champion. After a mixed '97 with Honda, Tarquini receives two offers from his old employer:
1-70 Move back to Alfa in their return to the BTCC
71-100 Return to his native Italy to race with Alfa
The end result is....49! Tarquini reunites with Alfa in their quest to take the BTCC by storm once more.
Tarquini's signing means Nicola Larini is left without any remaining offers.
1997 Super Tourewagen Cup champ Laurent Aiello is next in line, eager to continue his partnership with Peugeot, but in which series?
1-50 Stays in STW
51-100 Takes a big leap into the BTCC
What's it gonna be....85! Having conquered Germany, Aiello sets his sights on Britain, but it's gonna be a tougher nut to crack.
After Aiello is tin-top ace Roberto Ravaglia, who has one offer from Peugeot as well as two others:
1-45 Continues his long-standing relationship with BMW in STW
46-85 Goes to the Italian Superturismo Cup also with BMW
86-100 Goes with Peugeot
And it's....58. Ravaglia returns to Italy.
Another driver seeking a Peugeot seat is John Bintcliffe, having played a key factor in getting Audi's BTCC programme off the ground. Now that's been axed, he has two options:
1-30 Takes the 2nd Peugeot drive
31-100 Hang up the helmet
The RNG reads.....33. Bintcliffe calls time on his driving career, and plans to start up his own team.
Scotsman David Leslie has received two offers from his current team as well as Volvo, who are interested in acquiring David's invaluable intel in terms of car development.
1-75 Continues his tenure with Nissan
76-100 Jumps ship to Volvo
So it's.....24. Leslie is confident that 1998 will be Nissan's year.
Leslie's signing means Steve Soper and Martin Brundle are left without any remaining offers.
Next on queue is Jan 'Flash' Nilsson, fresh off two consecutive STCC championships with his own team. Volvo are interested in bringing him over to Britain, and so is Mardi Gras.
1-45 Accepts Volvo's offer
46-65 Takes a punt with Mardi Gras
66-85 Stays in STCC
86-100 Waits
Jan favours Volvo, but turns out to be.....88. Flash will wait for other offers and see what happens.
Jamie Davies has won the BRDC Autosport Award in 1995 and did pretty well in his first F3000 season for DAMS, so things are looking up for him. Team Dynamics, running Nissan's new young driver programme, are interested in his services.
1-45 Signs for Dynamics
46-100 Stays in F3000 with DAMS
....76 it is. Davies stays put in his quest to get onto the F1 scene.
Bernd Schneider was offered a drive at Menu's old seat at Renault, but he's Mercedes-contracted and Merc aren't exactly excited in seeing their driver behind the wheel of a Renault no less, so he refuses.
Another Swede, this time Mattias Ekstrom, who finished 2nd to Nilsson in the STCC in 1997. Many rate him highly, but since Volvo's 1st driver slot has been taken, Mardi Gras is now the only offer available.
1-35 Braves it out at Mardi Gras, hoping a big manufacturer might take notice of him
36-60 Heads back to STCC
61-100 Waits for other offers
The RNG reads....94. Ekstrom will wait for further offers before making a decision.
Jason Plato is next, having done pretty well in his first season with Renault, scoring two wins and finishing third. Volvo are keen on hiring him, and so are DC Cook.
1-55 Stays with Renault
56-80 Goes for Volvo
81-100 Bangs head against desk and signs for DC Cook
And it's.....67. Volvo complete their driver lineup despite offering the smaller salary, meaning Stefan Johansson is left without any remaining offers.
'96 Autosport Young Driver award winner Darren Turner is next in line, with one offer:
1-35 Signs with DC Cook
36-100 Agree to join McLaren's young driver programme with the prospect of a future F1 seat
He gets....5!! Turner signs for Cook. That means James Kaye is left without any remaining offers.
Fabrizio Giovinardi was Alfa Romeo's first choice for their 2nd seat, and Alfa rate him highly, so Alfa rock up to '98 with a wicked lineup of Giovinardi and Tarquini.
Despite a middling '97, James Thompson hopes that was a minor blip and intends to contend for the title this year. With one remaining offer from his present team Honda, he accepts.
After Audi's BTCC withdrawal, Frank Biela receives a good offer from Renault, but Audi, who are prepping their Le Mans project, aren't very keen on playing ball, so....
1-15 Joins Renault separate from Audi
15-35 Audi agrees to let him join, but on condition that they are free to take him out of the car for any race weekends for development of the R8
36-100 Leaves the BTCC and sticks with Audi

And it's....19! Biela joins Renault, but Audi may opt to take him out of his new ride anytime for testing of their Le Mans car, so make sure you have a backup option in case that occurs.
Yvan Muller is the next driver, with three options..
1-25 Go for Vauxhall Sport
26-80 Get himself title-winning machinery in Renault
81-100 Peugeot
...39 it is. Biela and Muller, that's a stonking pairing!
F3000 ace Tom Kristensen tested for Vauxhall in '97, and in the process has expressed interest in joining Britain's tin-top series. With Alfa's offers already taken by Giovinardi, he joins Vauxhall, meaning Craig Lowndes heads back Down Under to V8 Supercars.
'Nige's' first BTCC foray at Donington didn't go too well, but wants to prove the doubters wrong after a pathetic tenure at McLaren.
1-80 Reunites with Ford
81-85 Takes on a brave new challenge at Vauxhall
86-100 Dunno.... scratches his arse??
It culminates in....20! Nige recognises the Vauxhall's gonna be shite despite the (slightly) bigger salary, so he signs with Ford once more.
That means Anthony Reid is left without any remaining offers.
Kiwi Paul Radisich has always proven his knack in mediocre machinery, as proven with his two World Touring Car Cup victories. With one remaining offer from Ford, he gladly accepts and hopes Ford can finally get their act together after a torrid couple of years.
John "I'm going for 1st" Cleland has been fading since his successful '95 campaign, but Vauxhall still trust in his abilities, promising a better car for him to maximize his pace, so he accepts.
F1 reject Emmanuele Naspetti received two offers from Alfa and Honda, but the Alfa one was taken so...
1-20 Pilots the Honda #50
21-100 Stays in Italian Superturismo with BMW Team Italy
It's a....99. Naspetti stays in Italy.
Richard Kaye prefers management than racing potentially at the back of the pack, so he declines the offer from Brookes.
20-year-old Ulsterman Justin Wilson's performances in karting and junior formulae have caught the eye of three-time F1 champ Jackie Stewart, who has recommended Team Dynamics as a stepping stone for him and hopes the bigger cars will be to his advantage.
1-55 Continues his single-seater journey
56-100 Signs for Dynamics
The RNG reads....57! It's close, but Dynamics do enter 1998 with an experienced, capable racer in Neal and a young talented prospect in Wilson. Can they really make their mark this year?
'95 British F3 runner-up and '96 Macau GP winner Ralph Firman had a good first year in Formula Nippon, but Brookes Motorsport are interested in his services.
1-60 Stays in Japan full-time
61-95 Joins Brookes but will prioritize Formula Nippon over BTCC
96-100 Joins Brookes full-time
So it'll be...81. Firman will sign but reserves the right to skip any rounds clashing with Formula Nippon.
Paula Cook basically drives for her own family team so...
1-100 Cook
The number turns out to be....8. K.
2nd in the British Saloons 2000 championship in '97, Rogen Moen receives an offer from Mardi Gras.
1-75 Waits
76-100 Signs for Mardi Gras
And the number is...34. Roger waits for other offers.
Now here's an unexpected prospect. 44-year-old '97 Japan Touring Car Championship victor Osamu Nakako receives an unlikely offer from Honda!
Might be on the mellow side somewhat, but he still takes it into consideration.
1-25 Makes the almighty leap to Britain
26-100 Declines, opting to defend his title.
And it's....30. Osamu thanks Honda UK for the offer, but ultimately decides this is too much of a jump and politely refuses.
Jorg Muller was offered Peugeot's second seat, but he has already been snapped up by Porsche for FIA GT and too is Sauber F1's test driver, so he declines.
So here's how the driver lineups currently stack up:
Vodafone Nissan Racing
#1 Alain Menu, #8 David Leslie
Alfa Corse
#56 Gabrielle Tarquini, #57 Fabrizio Giovinardi
Blend 37 Williams Renault
#3 Frank Biela, #7 Yvan Muller
TWR Volvo S40 Racing
#4 Rickard Rydell, #14 Jason Plato
Vauxhall Sport
#88 John Cleland, #888 Tom Kristensen
Esso Ultron Team Peugeot
#9 Laurent Aiello, #10 TBA
Ford Mondeo Reynard Racing
#55 Paul Radisich, #66 Nigel Mansell
Brookes Motorsport
#28 Lee Brookes, #29 Ralph Firman
Team Dynamics Max Power
#77 Matt Neal, #24 Justin Wilson
Mardi Gras Motorsport
#16 TBA, #17 TBA
Team Honda Sport
#5 James Thompson, #50 TBA
DC Cook Motorsport
#20 Paula Cook, #21 Darren Turner

Lookin' good so far!!
As of now, Honda and Peugeot each still have one seat to fill while Mardi Gras still have two seats to fill. To those who still need to fill up the remaining seats, please place your bids before March 7,22:00 GMT.

Brookes motorsports wishes to hire Mark Blair to substitute for Ralph firman at every race that ralphie won't be available. 40k is enough for us. we believe in giving young British drivers a chance at a high level, and we feel that Blair has the potential to offer more than just a bunch of cash.

Autosport wrote:Il gran Ritorno! Alfa Romeo Returns to BTCC

Every British Touring car Championship fans remember the stunning Alfa Romeo 155 that former Formula 1 driver Gabriele tarquini drove en route to the 1994 title. those same fans also remember the disastrous 1995 title defense, where it got so bad that tarquini was replaced mid-season by Derek Warwick and Alfa quit the championship afterwards, disappointing many admirers of Italian automobiles, who hoped to see the scarlet beasts roam on the UK's best tracks again.

and here, at autosport, we can officially confirm that British alfa fans's wishes will be granted, as the milan-born manufacturer will return to BTTC in 1998 with a brand new car, the quick-looking 156.

"being absent of the BTCC for three years was actually a good thing for us..." Alfa Corse's team manager Marco Alessandro Belcuore told our reporter. "...it allowed us time to think about what went wrong at the end of our first stint and what we must do to make sure we won't suffer the same humiliation again. we worked extensively with the alfa factory on the developement of the 156 so that we can return to BTCC racing and be immediately competitive."

if alfa wishes to have a successful comeback in the BTCC, they will have a pretty hefty task at hand: not only are reigning champions renault looking as strong as ever woth the recent signings of audi drivers Frank Biela and yvan muller, but Nissan considerably widened their championship window with the blockbuster signing of defending champion Alain menu, with David Leslie staying onboard as the swiss's teammate.

"we're not afraid of any of them!" belcuore said concerning whether alfa should be worried about their potential rivals. "we may be gone for a while, but we are back! and we are excited to battle with the big dogs of the championship! our 156 is more than capable of running up front, and Gabriele and fabrizio are drivers who can bring the best out of the car!"

those drivers are very good indeed. Gabriele tarquini, who spent the last three years between various touring car series, a failed attempt at an F1 comeback and a mixed comeback season in the 1997 BTCC with Honda, returns to the team with whom he won the 1994 title with, and he is very happy with the performances of the 156 in early testing.

"it's a beast!" tarquini exclaimed, all smiles on his face. " I haven't drove a touring car that good since the 155! and I can feel that this alfa corse team are determined to not repeat the same mistakes as three Years ago!"

his teammate, fabrizio Giovanardi, will make his debut in the BTCC following a really solid 1997 season in the Italian superturismo series, driving for alfa. the driver from sassuolo is highly regarded by the milanese outfit, and his excellent performances in that championship, as well as his title win in the Spanish touring car championship, prompted alfa to promote him to their new BTCC effort.

"i'm definitely excited to be here, in the UK." Giovanardi told us. "this is perhaps the best touring car series in the world, and to race at such a high level is a true testament to the trust that alfa has put into me. I've worked really hard to reach that level, and I can't wait to help alfa win!"

BTCC fans will get a chance to witness the new look alfa corse's return at the opening round, at the thruxton circuit in hampshire, England, on April 13th.

is there going to be sponsorship in this series? or it wouldn't be necessary? cause it'd be dope to see what kind of livery the tin tops would rock!

Possibly from next season, as this season is a bit of a test, before jumping straight into the minute details in future seasons. Young Driver/ Rookie test sessions, driver improvement points are a few of many ideas in the pipeline at the moment.

Speaking of which, anyone fancy a 2000 Alternate CART season, eh? :D :D

Right, so the deadline is tomorrow. RedEyes504 , I am yet to receive a response from you concerning the re-bidding of drivers, so after the deadline has passed without your re-submissions I shall send you private messages shortly asking you about your driver re-bids, with a failure to do so resulting in me choosing them myself(who knows, I might get you some pretty good ones). For everyone else, the pre-season test at Donington Park will be run within the next few days, so get ready chaps! Thanks!

Yep, in total Firman would miss five rounds, meaning a total of 200k that Brookes would get from Blair, which I say is pretty sweet.

Thanks RedEyes!! And so time to get the final seats filled then!

Christian Abt is tied to Audi, while Eric Cayrolle prefers defending his 1997 French Supertouring Championship crown with BMW, so they both reject their respective offers from Mardi Gras.
And so David Donohue, son of multiple Can-Am champ Mark, is up. Having campaigned a Dodge Stratus in the NATCC(which didn't last long), he's received an offer from Mardi Gras.

1-45 Takes the offer
46-100 Opts to continue with Dodge's GT programme.
And it's......26!! I don't know what convinced him, but he's Mardi Gras's first driver, and could potentially spring a surprise.

Back to the drivers who opted to wait for further offers:
Jan 'Flash' Nilsson
1-30 Stays in STCC
31-60 Accepts the offer Mardi Gras previously offered him
61-100 Takes up the opportunity with Honda

The number is.....36! Mardi Gras complete their lineup, and it could be a decent one too.
As for the second Honda seat, Satoshi Motoyama prefers racing in Formula Nippon to bolster his skills, but is open to future offers from Honda UK.
That leaves 20-year-old Mattias Ekstrom as he....
1-55 Takes up the great opportunity from Honda
56-80 Stays in STCC
81-100 Heads to STW in search of another manufacturer
And it's......53! Ekstrom will pilot the #50, and thanks Honda UK for the opportunity and promises to do well.

So it comes down to the #10 Peugeot. Nicola Larini is contracted to Alfa Romeo so he declines Peugeot's offer.
As for Derek Warwick, he has opted to retire to focus on a management role within Vauxhall's race squad so he's out of it.
That leaves Peter Kox, who did make a few appearances for BMW in '96 and is eager to return, even with a different manufacturer.

1-60 Drives the #10
61-80 Continues his relationship with BMW in STW
81-100 Pursues another avenue in GTs
The RNG reads....4! Kox completes the grid! Voilà!

what's the 5th race? cause I checked on the 1998 formula nippon calendar and I calculated that he would miss 4 races.

James Thompson was actually Volvo's favourite for the second seat so I'm quite disappointed we weren't able to even get an offer in for him but I'm happy we got Jason Plato instead. The Swedes are happy with this line up :)

As others have said quality driver lineups all round, very happy with Menu/Leslie and Neal/Wilson (probably the tallest driver lineup in BTCC history) for my two teams.

Quick question though, wouldn’t Mansell be the #55 with his association with the red five number (plus using the number IRL in BTCC)?

Looking back, you've made a great point there, will update accordingly!

Also #56 was Alfa's number, so it will be #55 for Mansell and #66 for Radisich.

Anyway, here's the results for the first day of pre-season testing at Donington:
Wednesday, 25 February 1998
1)#7 Yvan Muller
2)#1 Alain Menu +0.104
3) #8 David Leslie +0.148
4) #4 Rickard Rydell +0.213
5) #56 Gabrielle Tarquini +0.315
6) #77 Matt Neal +0.333
7) #24 Justin Wilson +0.446
8) #57 Fabrizio Giovinardi +0.537
9) #9 Laurent Aiello +0.650
10) #5 James Thompson +0.741
11) #55 Nigel Mansell +0.967
12) #50 Mattias Ekstrom +0.978
13) #88 John Cleland +1.204
14) #17 Jan Nilsson +1.413
15) #66 Paul Radisich +1.480
16) #3 Frank Biela +1.564
17) #21 Darren Turner +1.590
18) #29 Ralph Firman +1.981
19) #888 Tom Kristensen +2.527
20) #14 Jason Plato +2.813
21) #16 David Donohue+2.940
22) #10 Peter Kox +3.012
23) #20 Paula Cook +3.448
24) #28 Lee Brookes +3.900

The session went relatively well, except for a big off for Jason Plato early in the session, who straddled the kerbs exiting the chicane, which was enough to spit him straight into the pit wall, chomping the front end of the Volvo and rulling him out of the remainder of the session.
Apart from that, it was business as usual as Yvan Muller topped the timesheets for his new team, with Menu and Leslie close behind him, waxing lyrical about the pace of the Nissan, especially around Donington's sweeping turns.
Very encouraging was the inclusion of the two Dynamics cars in the top 8, Wilson just a tenth behind his more seasoned team-mate, and he commented, "It's awesome to have a teammate like Matt (Neal) in the team, he's a very experienced guy and obviously I'm fairly new to the these types of cars which are more physically demanding compared to single-seater cars, so having Matt alongside me is brilliant and I can't wait to see how we can develop as a team across the season."
Alfa Romeo's return went relatively well, with Giovinardi just two-tenths behind his champion teammate, while Laurent Aiello's first BTCC run went relatively smoothly apart from a minor spin coming out of the Old Hairpin.
Ford and Honda expected a fair bit more, with Nigel Mansell was vocal about the Ford's lack of power, further amplified with an onboard view of him being blitzed by the Alfa of Tarquini down the back straight, with him commenting: "Either the Alfa's an utter rocketship, or we're just bloody slow!!"" Still, he fared better than both Cleland and Kristensen, the pair both struggling with a lack of grip, especially through Coppice and McLeans, the car proving a bit of a handful. Frank Biela was mired fairly down in the timesheets, but that could be in part of him getting used to the Renault, and to front-wheel-drive machinery where he has been racing four-wheel drive cars of the past couple of years. Jan Nilsson did a pretty decent job,and the top 12 were covered by just below a second, a possible portent for the season to come. Someone who probably should have done better was Dutchman Peter Kox, whose fastest time was an amazing 2.3 seconds slower than his rookie teammate, and he'll have to step up his game if he is to make an impression this season.

not too shabby from Gabi and fabrizio. a few upgrades in key areas and Alfa will be right there with the nissans and renaults.

as for Brookes motorsports...yeah, with such a competitive mid-to-backfield and our tight budget, it's gonna be tough. we need to be on point with our team management. still, Ralph Firman showed some promise, so there are some positives.

And here's the results from the second day of pre-season testing:

Thursday, 26 February 1998
1) Alain Menu 1m:10.345s
2) Rickard Rydell +0.233
3) Nigel Mansell +0.402
4) Fabrizio Giovinardi +0.419
5) David Leslie +0.434
6) Matt Neal +0.487
7) Paul Radisich +0.504
8) Yvan Muller +0.519
9) Jan Nilsson +0.589
10) Frank Biela +0.650
11) Justin Wilson +0.692
12) Jason Plato +0.739
13) Laurent Aiello +0.840
14) Ralph Firman +1.022
15) Mattias Ekstrom +1.043
16) James Thompson +1.089
17) Tom Kristensen +1.414
18) Peter Kox +1.458
19) Darren Turner +2.084
20) Lee Brookes +2.469
21) John Cleland +2.766
22) Gabrielle Tarquini +3.166
23) Paula Cook +4.015
24) David Donohue +4.396

It was Nissan's turn to go top of the pile as new signing Alain Menu managed to turn out a 1:10:345, two tenths faster than anyone else and prove Menu's superb adaptation to his new ride. Behind him was Rydell's Volvo, but right up the Swede's chuff was Nigel Mansell's Ford, with team-mate Paul Radisich four place back- a welcome change from yesterday! Radisich commented," I'm very pleased about how the car handled today, especially through Coppice-boy it was brilliant! Of course we're certainly a tad down in terms of power, but through the twisty bits we're definitely right up if not the best out there, so that's a great sign for the team concerned,"
Renault dropped somewhat compared to yesterday, instead opting to concentrate on long runs, while Biela was cut down his gap to Muller by a massive margin. Dynamics carried their form from yesterday, while Jan Nilsson was a surprise visitor to the top 10, giving the team great hope that they could do good things this season. Gabrielle Tarquini had an oil leak that sidelined him for most of the session, while Honda were still fairly quiet, but at least they fared better than what Vauxhall could manage, the slowest of the works teams by a long shot.

Very strong showing on both days from the two Nissan Primera teams, a special shoutout to Justin Wilson who has been very impressive adapting quickly to a touring car.

hmm, shame for gabi with his oil leak. if it wasn't for it, he'd definitely be up there in the top 5.

in other news, a much better effort from both fabrizio and the Brookes motorsports boys, with Ralph slowly but surely showcasing his talents and even the gaffer himself improving his standing!

22) #20 Paula Cook +2.034
23) #17 David Donohue +2.617
24) #28 Lee Brookes +3.011

And with one big headline to finish things off:

Macau BTCC round to be non-championship race, £1 million prize pool on offer

Friday, 27 February- Autosport can confirm that the British Touring Car Championship will heading to the prestigious Macau Guia Street Circuit this year, with a single 135 km non-championship race to round off the season. Perhaps even more intriguing is that the event will encompass a £1.06 million prize pool for all teams participating in the event, as follows:
1st: £150,000
2nd: £125,000
3rd: £100,000
4th: £85,000
5th: £75,000
6th: £70,000
7th: £65,000
8th: £60,000
9th: £55,000
10th:£50,000
11th: £45,000
12th:£35,000
13th: £30,000
14th:£25,000
15th: £20,000
16th:£15,000
17th:£10,000
18th: £5,000
19th or lower:£0

So, to summarize,
-This event will not count towards the championship.
-Since this is a non-championship round, driver contracts do not matter in this one. You may opt to retain your regular season drivers or maybe replace one or both of them with guest drivers (again, try to keep things restrained).
-Since this is an extremely prestigious event, the minimum wage for hiring a guest driver(s) for this race is £12,000.
-Should you wish to hire a pay driver for this one race, they can pay you up to a maximum of £15,000.

are travel expenses covered, or do we have to pay for transport and everything? cause I fear that some privateer teams won't be able to afford to go to Macau.

still, some great news for the championship. this might be the perfect opportunity to claim the now defunct DTM's throne as the best tin tops series in the world.

Relax, travel costs will be covered by the BTCC themselves, even if it means imminent bankruptcy :P

well, If we want it to become the best tin tops series, we must avoid bankruptcy! :D

maybe we can find sponsors or manufacturers to help cover the costs, as well as charity races or something...blah, I'm thinking too much about it, I should just relax lol

It was plain sailing for Yvan Muller as he cruised to an easy win once he swept past Gabrielle Tarquini on the second lap, and he never looked back, winning by 8 seconds. Behind the Italian was a ferocious battle between Menu and Rydell, the defending champion clawing his way up from 6th, eventually coming out on top. After starting 4th, Frank Biela never really got going, and in a desperate attempt to reclaim 7th from Mattias Ekstrom, he punted the Swede into the final chicane, damaging the German's suspension and breaking the Honda's right-rear wheel. Justin Wilson failed to get off the line after his clutch gave way, while Paul Radisich and John Cleland contrived to collide into Campbell Corner, beaching both cars into the gravel.

DNF) #7 Yvan Muller (Blend 37 Williams Renault) Lap 4-(Accident)
DNF) #16 Jan Nilsson (Mardi Gras Motorsport) Lap 2-(Mechanical)
Race 2, with the starting positions determined from the first race, was a much more hotly-contested affair. Yvan Muller paced the first couple of laps, but he went a tad too wide into Goodwood Curve and sild into the grass and eventually into the tyres, the Frenchman fuming as he stomped the ground in utter disappointment. After two laps under the safety car, the race descended into a mudfight between Rydell, Tarquini, Neal and Menu, with the Italian leading the field as the safety car pulled in, but he lost it quickly to a charging Rydell, the Swede making an amazing move around the outside of the Alfa through Goodwood. However, Menu was adamant on spoiling Volvo's party, and the two squabbled for position right until the end, when Menu finally made the crucial dive into the final chicane after a series of draft battles, while Neal was able to hold off Tarquini for the final step of the podium, and also his first podium in the series. James Thompson was far back, with a damaged front bumper and the rear tail detaching from his car hurting his performance and the fact he managed to hold on to 5th was one of brilliance.

race 3 aside, this was a very good week-end for alfa. we showed the big boys that we are back to reclaim our throne, and Gabi was excellent all the way through. fabrizio was also pretty good in the first race before falling off in the other two, though it's mainly because this is his first race in the highest level of touring car racing, so it was a bit expected. gabi's collision with Muller and rydell, though, that was unfortunate. all in all, alfa is very satisfied.

as for brookes...at least, ralphie showed some good things before his car broke down, and he managed to finish the second race alongside the boss, which is Brookes's main goal this season. upgrading reliability will be the main priority, with power also being strongly considered.

Positive start for the season with Menu getting a nice lead with picking up Nissan’s first race win since 1993 with the late Kieth D’Or, we’ll dedicate this win to his honour.

What was the reason for Wilson withdrawing with one lap remaining by the way?
