Driver Signings Part 1.75

Helio Castroneves
Having landed the jackpot with the five-race Penske deal, Helio has received an offer coming from PacWest to drive the remaining races, and with their equipment there's also the minute possibility of him potentially challenging for....a title?
1-55 Races for PacWest
56-100 Declines
It's.....91!! Helio doesn't think PacWest's the proper deal and so refuses. Bruce was not amused.
Jan Magnussen
The Danish racer has gone from being the next Senna to being 'er, who?' in the span of a couple years, but McCaw reckons that the slidey, more powerful, most physically challenging Champ Cars will be more to his liking.
1-55 Takes up the PacWest ride
56-100 Refuses
The RNG reads......60!! It was a narrow round, but Jan ultimately refuses, citing a stingy pay offer.

Tony Renna
The last lad on PacWest's shortlist, Renna is tempted by the offer, but Kelley Racing aren't going to let him go that easily.
1-35 Signs with PacWest
36-100 Stays in IRL
And its....31!!! Renna completes a stacked grid and makes up a total of 10 Americans in the field.

So here comes Spring Training then!!
How does it stack up?
-There will 2 two-day tests, at Homestead and Mid-Ohio respectively.
-CART will cover the travel costs for this one.
-In these sessions you may opt to place particular focus on a particular area that you reckon your driver needs improving. In the case these areas are: Aggression (A), the ability to overtake as well as to get on the power sooner and the brakes later; and Technicality (T), the ability to transverse through the twisties at a constant rate, ideal for circuits such as Road America or Mont-Tremblant.
-You may also opt to test an unsigned driver or a young driver in an FE Rookie test sort of thing if you wish.
-Failure to post yer plans will result in me sorting your driver allocation randomly.
Please post your testing plans in this format:
Homestead Test
Driver for Day 1:
Area for Driver Improvement : Acceleration/Technicality
Driver for Day 2:
Area for Driver Improvement: Acceleration/Technicality

Mid-Ohio Test
Driver for Day 1:
Area for Driver Improvement: Acceleration/Technicality
Driver for Day 2:
Area for Driver Improvement: Acceleration/Technicality

Please post your plans for testing before May 12, 12:00 GMT.

Team KOOL Green spring training program:

Homestead test
Day 1 driver: Dario Franchitti
area for driver improvement: Acceleration

Day 2 driver: Tony Stewart
area for improvement: Acceleration

Mid-ohio test (honestly, we could've used Sebring for this. oh well)

Day 1 driver: Tony Stewart
area of improvement: technicality

Day 2 driver: Tony stewart
area of improvement: Acceleration

Mo Nunn racing spring training program

Homestead test

Day 1 driver: Alex Zanardi
area of improvement: Acceleration

Day 2 driver: Sarah Fisher
Area of improvement: Acceleration

Mid-ohio test

Day 1 driver: Sarah Fisher
area of improvement: technicality

Day 2 driver: Sarah Fisher
area of improvement: Acceleration

as you can see, I put the main focus on improving Tony Stewart and Sarah on the road courses, as they are already really good on ovals. plus, Zanardi and Dario have already proven how great they are on road courses, so no need to improve anything with them. in fact, both those drivers are also mentoring their teammates so as to make them better on the twisties.

14) #16 Towsend Bell +1.134
15) #11 Olivier Panis +1.325
16) #5 Jenson Button +1.563
After many months of giddy anticipation, the CART circus finally rolled out for testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway, with pretty every team having at least one driver change and a chain of fast, talented rookies, setting the stage for what could be one of CART's greatest years.
As the dust settled, it was reigning champ Juan Pablo Montoya who topped the timesheets, as he and Chip Ganassi look set to rule the roost once more. The Reynard-Mercedes combo looks like a potent one, and aside from a minor oil leak late in the day, Montoya was extremely pleased and hopes 2000 will be just as impressive as last year.
The surprise of the day came behind him, however, in the form of Mexican-American Memo Gidley, second in the MCI WorldCom Coyne car, the Reynard-Honda proving mighty capable too, ahead of Jimmy Vasser in the Team Rahal Swift as the team seemed to really get the hang of their new chassis. One of the stories of the day, however was a shunt for Scotsman Dario Franchitti , as he lost control on corner entry into Turn 3 and backed into the fence, rear first. He emerged without a hitch, but the rear end was pulverised and the team was done for the day.
The last four drivers consisted of rookies, with Prost F1 refugee Olivier Panis second-last behind Townsend Bell in an Eagle-Mercedes no less. Panis later admitted that he was focused on getting the maximum amount of laps, and, advised by teammate Michael Andretti, getting the hang of ovals.

CART Testing Day 2: Kanaan tops standings
1) #4 Tony Kanaan 0:25:221
2) #33 Kenny Brack +0.095
3) #18 Tony Renna +0.158
4) #27 Tony Stewart +0.341
5) #2 Helio Castroneves +0.378
6) #20 Max Papis +0.505
7) #9 Christian Fittipaldi +0.623
8) #96 Roberto Moreno +0.640
9) #19 Lee Bentham +0.732
10) #11 Olivier Panis +0.995
11) #66 Sarah Fisher +1.007
12) #8 Tom Kristensen +1.125
13 #16 Townsend Bell +1.176
14) #5 Jenson Button +1.328
15) #37 Casey Mears +1.543
16) #10 Alex Yoong +2.668

Day 2 saw new Ganassi signing TK top the charts in his first outing with the team, as CGR continued to sustain their authority at the front. Behind him, however, just like the previous day, were a raft of surprises. Indy 500 champ and Forsythe rookie Kenny Brack managed to whittle down the gap, though , the Swede very much confident of his prospects for 2000, while rookie Tony Renna proved that the PacWest-Reynard-Honda was a sttong proposition by clocking a time good enough for 3rd, ahead of IRL/NASCAR drifter Tony Stewart, who had a relatively decent day save for a minor whoopsie coming out of Turn 4, but unlike his teammate Dario he managed to keep it out of the SAFER barriers. At the back of the field was Malaysian Alex Yoong, who was slow,
dangerously slow, so much to the extent that John Della Pena even threatened to yank him out of the car when interviewed over his struggles. John later admitted he was just joking, but if that is anything to go by then things do not look particularly rosy for Yoong.

Sorry for taking a little while, but nevertheless here goes then....

Paul Page: The flag is about to drop on another thrilling season. This off-season has been one of change, so much so that every team has had at least one new driver, and with that a host of 13 talented rookies looking to mark their mark here in CART. But before we get underway live here at Homestead-Miami Speedway, let's look at the teams and drivers who will battle it out at 20 gruelling events in pursuit of the prestigious PPG Trophy.

Class of 2000: The Cars and the Stars

Target Chip Ganassi Racing
#1 Juan Pablo Montoya (COL) (C) 1999 Rankings: 1st (212 points, 7 wins, 2 podiums)
Age: 25
#12 Tony Kanaan (BRA) 1999 Rankings: 11th (85 points, 1 win)
Age: 26
Package: Reynard 2KI-Mercedes
Sponsors: Target, Panasonic, Fujifilm

To start off, we have the kings of CART in the form of Chip Ganassi's squad, which has been top of the charts in the past five seasons. Chip took a big o'l risk hiring Juan Pablo Montoya, and it certainly paid off, JPM registering 7 victories en route to a title in his first season. He has a new partner though, with Jimmy Vasser replaced by Brazilian Tony Kanaan, now in his third year in the sport. CG is keen to be seen as a star maker , and if he can do what he did with Juan and Alex Zanardi, there will be no stopping this team as they aim to once more leave the opposition in its dust. The issue with this plan? Everyone behind them is hungrier than ever to prove otherwise......

Marlboro Team Penske
#2 Greg Moore (CAN)
1999 Rankings: 10th (97 points, 1 win, 2 podiums)
Age: 25
Helio Castroneves (BRA) 1999 Rankings: 15th (48 points, 1 podium)
Age: 25
#3 Gil de Ferran (BRA) 1999 Rankings: 8th (108 points, 1 win, 3 podiums)
Age: 33
Package: Lola B2K/00-Honda
Sponsors: Marlboro, Mobil 1, DIRECTV

Gosh, what happened to this team? Crappy tires, an underpowered motor, a drunken Little Al and Gonchi's sad demise at Laguna Seca signified the declination of a former powerhouse. Or at least that's what that thought, Roger remarked; we're gonna wipe the floor with 'em once again this year. With a new millennium comes a blank slate, and the ditching of their own chassis combined with new Honda motors indicate that TP is hell-bent on dominating the opposition this year. Despite new signing Greg Moore still recuperating from his vicious shunt at Fontana last year, his sub Helio Castroneves is a sound replacement, having dragged the Hogan-Lola into places it had no right to be in '99, and he will be lookin' to paste a smile onto RP's face, much like fellow Brazilian Gil de Ferran, who over the past couple of years has managed to pull-off giant-killing feats with Walker, something Roger hopes he can replicate in a larger capacity, and although testing may not suggest such, you can never bet against these guys on delivering a straight knockout punch.....

Valvoline Walker Racing
#5 Jenson Button (UK) (R) 1999 Rankings (British F3): 3rd (168 points, 3 wins, 4 podiums)
Age: 20
Package: Eagle 997-Toyota
Sponsors: Valvoline, Sasol, Mobil 1

After Gil de Ferran's departure to Penske at the end of last season, Derrick Walker was left in a bit of a quandary. Having originally considered pulling Sarah Fisher from his IRL plans into CART, he has instead opted to take a gamble on 20-year-old Jenson Button, who was edged out of a Williams F1 drive by Brazilian Bruno Juncqueira. Derrick reckons Jenson's a gem into the making, and that with a couple years of experience he can develop into a top driver. While the Eagle-Toyota package isn't exactly what you'll call impressive, Walker has a reputation of punching above their weight, and don't be shocked to see more of the same in '00....

K-Mart Newman Haas Racing
#6 Michael Andretti (USA) (C) 1999 Rankings: 4th (151 points, 1 win, 4 podiums)
Age: 38
#11 Olivier Panis (FRA) (R) 1999 Rankings (F1): 16th (2 points, best finish of 6th)
Age: 34
Package: Swift 0.11a -Ford Cosworth
Sponsors: K-Mart, PlayStation, Coca-Cola

With the oldest-combined driver pairing in the field, Newman Haas aren't exactly big on youth, but they're aren't exactly short on talent and expertise, given their illustrious track record. Michael Andretti hopes to put his constant title-choking to a close once and for all this year, and alongside him will be a new guy in the form of Olivier Panis, most notable for his stunning victory in Monaco '96. While he's never been the same after his shunt in Canada three years back, Panique has acclimatised himself well to the team, and hopes, with the guidance of his veteran teammate, that he can shine on ovals just as he's expected to on street/road courses. Carl Haas and Paul Newman have kept the same chassis-engine duo, commenting testing was just a sandbag of expectations and reckons this is the final step in order to clinch the PPG Trophy once again.

Budweiser/ Red Bull Team Rahal
#7 Jimmy Vasser (USA) (C) 1999 Rankings: 9th (104 points, 2 podiums)
Age: 35
#8 Tom Kristensen (DEN) (R) 1999 Rankings (Super Tourewagen Cup): 3rd (486 points, 3 wins, 6 podiums)
Age: 33
Package: Swift 0.11a -Ford Cosworth
Sponsors: Budweiser (#7), Red Bull (#8), Castrol, Hugo Boss

Just like Newman Haas, Team Rahal have the same chassis, the same engine, and the same driver pattern of one versed hand in one car and a mellow rookie in the other. After spending the the past 3 years living under the shadow of Zanardi and JPM, 1996 CART champ Jimmy Vasser steps into the #7 hoping to establish himself as the team leader, while adjoining him is Danish sportscar ace Tom Kristensen, who did an expectational job in testing at Mid-Ohio, and could well turn out to be one of the dark horses this year. Rahal haven't exactly emerged as championship contenders since 1992, but for this year they could very well address that.....

Marlboro Team Hogan
#9 Christian Fittipaldi (BRA) 1999 Rankings: 7th (121 points, 1 win, 4 podiums)
Age: 29
Package: Lola B2K/00 Honda
Sponsors: Marlboro, DIRECTV, Mobil 1

Only a last-ditch effort from his former pal Roger Penske saved Carl Hogan's squad from an untimely demise, but that seemed to be a mere sparkle as it emerged that Carl was looking to step down to spend more time with his family and other ventures, and sell off the team to other suitors in order to not let his team bite the bullet. However, race on to 2000 they do, and Christian Fittipaldi moves on from Newman Haas, aiming to use this as a springboard to a potential Penske seat through his performances. Hogan's objectives for 2000 are simple: go out in style.

Miller Lite Della Pena Motorsports
#10 Max Wilson (BRA) (R) 1999 Rankings (F3000) : 8th (14 points, 3 podiums)
Age: 28
Alex Yoong (MAL) (R) 1999 Rankings (F3000): N/A (0 points)
Age: 24
Package: Swift 0.11a -Toyota
Sponsors: Miller Lite, Corona Beer, Cummins

After the departure of long-time driver Richie Hearn and title sponsor Budweiser, John Della Pena managed to go one better and grab two liquor sponsors at the same time (how this was possible is up for debate). While the Swift-Toyota combo isn't too bad, question marks rise over their driver lineup. Brazilian Max Wilson is quick, but very crash-happy, while Alex Yoong is bound to steal Shiggy's spotlight of becoming the CART Reject. Don't expect this team to trouble the frontrunners, but then stranger things have occurred....

Alumax Bettenhausen Racing
#16 Townsend Bell (USA) (R) 1999 Rankings (Barber Dodge Pro Series): 3rd (104 points, 1 win, 3 podiums)
Age: 25
Package: Eagle 997-Mercedes
Sponsors: Alumax, Coca-Cola, Qantas

The Bettenhausen family's 54th year of racing (technically) comes with a great deal of change, along with that the return of their former title sponsor Alumax and a host of other tasty ones too, including Coca-Cola and Aussie airliner Qantas. On the driving front, San Francisco hailer Townsend Bell comes in fresh off a strong year in the Barber Dodge series, and while this is the first time he'll be racing a machine this potent, Townsend says he's relishing this newfound challenge and he hopes to bed himself in nicely with the field. While this team may be a relatively small one, you can bet yerself that they won't be embarrassing themselves, that's for sure, something Bettenhausen has proven time and time again.....

PacWest Racing Enterprises
#17 Cristiano da Matta (BRA) 1999 Rankings: 18th (32 points, best finish of 4th)
Age: 27
#18 Tony Renna (USA) (R) 1999 Rankings (Lights): 16th (22 points, 1 podium)
Age: 24
Package: Reynard 2KI-Honda
Sponsors: McDonald's (#17), Molson Brewery (#18), PlayStation, Samsung

PacWest are another team that have a new duo of drivers, and while the highs of 1997 may seem like a distant memory, this year they will be hoping to prove otherwise. Cristiano da Matta enjoyed a decent if somewhat crashy debut year, with flashes of brilliance among the way, and while he finds himself in another new area of pastures, this team should give him the confidence to extract his full potential, with the Reynard-Honda package behind him. On the other side of the garage, Tony Renna is also a decent addition, and while his Lights performances could be best described as rhapsodic, Bruce McCaw reckons this guy, along with Shorty, are the real dealz, and the equipment they have, this team look set to cause a potential upset this year, assuming the stars align and their drivers are able to keep it on the black stuff.

Payton/Coyne Racing
#19 Lee Bentham (CAN) (R) 1999 Rankings (Toyota Atlantics): 6th (71 points, 1 win)
Age: 30
#34 Memo Gidley (USA) (R) 1999 Rankings: 29th (4 points, best finish of 11th)
Age: 30
Package: Reynard 2KI-Honda
Sponsors: MCI WorldCom (#19), Visteon (#34), ASUS Technology, Coors Light

Like PacWest, Coyne have a band of new, fairly unpolished drivers, although on the fairly mellow side. After being snubbed by the snobby Québécois for a Forsythe race seat, Lee Bentham finally steps into a Champ Car, looking to prove to Gerald that he was really missing out on someone here, and alongside him is the likeable Mexican-American Memo Gidley, who has come from living on a houseboat eight years old to becoming a full-on racer, and he, along with Bentham, will be raring to lift this team from the depths of grid-fillers to the upper echelons of the midfield or even the front, something this determined squad is not incapable of achieving.

Shell/Tecate Patrick Racing
#20 Max Papis (ITA)
1999 Rankings: 5th (150 points, 3 podiums)
Age: 31
#40 Adrian Fernandez (MEX) 1999 Rankings: 6th (140 points, 2 wins, 2 podiums)
Age: 37
Package: Lola B2K/00-Ford Cosworth
Sponsors: Shell, Tecate, Dupont, Hewlett-Packard

Pat Patrick's eponymous squad returns once more buzzing with confidence, and judging by the lineup, it's not exactly a head-scratcher as to why. Adrian Fernandez was unlucky to miss out on championship contention through injury, and his all-round prowess will mark him out as one to watch this season. However, he's got some tasty company in the form of 'Mad Max' Papis, replacing the disappointing P.J Jones, the Italian coming off a very strong first season with Rahal, and if that's anything to go by, this could turn out to be one of the most intriguing teammate battles of the year, regardless of championship contention or otherwise, the former of which Pat is assured that his drivers can manage.

KOOL Team Green
#26 Dario Franchitti (SCO) 1999 Rankings: 2nd (212 points, 3 wins, 8 podiums)
Age: 27
#27 Tony Stewart (USA) (R) 1999 Rankings (Sprint Cup Series): 4th (4474 points, 3 wins, 3 podiums)
Age: 29
Package: Reynard 2KI-Honda
Sponsors: KOOL ,Klein Tools, Gillette

Having clinched the team's title last season, Kim Green's crack squad is looking good to replicate that same feat in 2000, despite the oopsies in testing. Having gone through two years of PT, Kim has gone for a even bigger proposition and signed USAC champ and IRL/NASCAR drifter Tony Stewart alongside Dario Franchitti, who arrives with a vengeance and hopes to triumph this time after his heartbreaking tiebreaker defeat last year. While the loud Indiana native is expected to crush the competition on ovals, he isn't as potent in the twisties, something KG knows well, even going as far as engaging in ice-breaking activities with Dario and Tony in order to get the pair to know each other, hoping that Dario can bring invaluable road-racing insight to Tony just as Tony can bring oval knowledge to Dario. If matters go to plan, expect this pairing to be a dominant one, but if it doesn't, expect firework factories to impose night shifts on this one....

Players Forsythe Racing
#32 Paul Tracy (CAN) 1999 Rankings: 3rd (161 points, 2 wins, 5 podiums)
Age: 32
#33 Kenny Brack (SWE) (R) 1999 Rankings (IRL) 2nd (256 points, 1 win, 3 podiums)
Age: 34
Package: Reynard 2KI-Mercedes
Sponsors: Players, Indeck, Mobil 1

Forsythe's 1999 started off strongly but tailed off big-time come October, with Penske-mover Greg Moore's horrific smash at Fontana doing little to help matters. However, a new millennium provides a clean slate, and Jerry and his crew are anticipating big, big things to come for this one. While their new lineup may not be all-Canucky, it's certainly all-stacked up in terms of speed and talent. West Hill's Thrilly Boi, a.k.a Paul Tracy himself, embarks on a brand spanking new mission with GF, eager to lead a Canadian squad as he searches for his first title, looking to iron out the rough patches that have deterred him time and time again. Alongside him will be Swedish racer Kenny Brack, who comes with a Borg Warner, an IRL title and a runner-up placing in F3000 1996 on his resume, and he is expected to be contender from the get-go, especially on ovals. With possibly one the best lineups in the field, and this team's unwavering determination, Forsythe was seriously looking ahead.

All American Racers
#36 Casey Mears (USA) (R) 1999 Rankings (Lights) 2nd: (116 points, 1 win, 4 podiums)
Age: 22
#37 Robby Gordon (USA) 1999 Rankings: 20th (27 points, best finish of 8th)
Age: 31
Package: Lola B2K/00-Toyota
Sponsors: Motorola (#36), Telefonica (#37), 7-Eleven, Petrobras

After four years of trying and utter frustration, AAR have finally knuckled down and ditched their turdmobile, to their own relief. Having gone through those four seasons trying to prove the Eagle chassis to the CART stage, Dan Gurney's team have gone back instead to their real objective - winning out on track. The Lola-Toyota is an alright basis to start out, and while Casey Mears might not have the raw speed of his Indy-legend dad, he's expected to keep the car on the road, and is still very young, whilst for Robby Gordon, while the highs of '94 and '95 may be mere memories now, this year he has the opportunity to put things right and show that he's still got the skill to win. This team does have a great deal of potential, and should things go well for them, championship successes will surely not be out of the picture in the future.

Mo Nunn Racing
#55 Alex Zanardi (ITA) (C) 1999 Rankings (F1): 19th (0 points, best finish of 7th)
Age: 34
#66 Sarah Fisher (USA) (R) 1999 Rankings (IRL) 46th: (5 points)
Age: 20
Package: Lola B2K/00-Toyota
Sponsors: Hollywood Cigarettes (#55), Pennzoil (#66), VISA, Denso

Former Formula 1 team founder and Ganassi engineer Mo Nunn's team has become a reality, and boy he has assembled a lineup that will keep everyone intrigued over its development. After his shocker of a season at Williams, two-time CART champ Alex Zanardi returns with his former sparring partner, and together they will be hoping to achieve the same level of success they had in a different environment. On the literal flipside is Sarah Fisher, the youngest driver in the field, who was originally slated to compete in IRL with Walker, but was then suggested by Derrick to Mo who was eager to take her on, of which she was extremely pleased to accept. Sarah will be lookin' to learn a thing or two from her seasoned teammate, especially on road courses, and while testing may have been a bit quiet for them, Mo has stated that this will be a learner year for everyone involved and they will be looking to make big strides over the next couple years. For this year, expect them to score a solid if not spectacular haul of points, and don't be flabbergasted if they manage more than that.....

PPI Motorsports
#96 Roberto Moreno (BRA) 1999 Rankings : 14th (58 points, 1 podium)
Age: 41
#97 Alex Barron (USA) (Oval-only) 1999 Rankings: 27th (4 points, best finish of 9th)
Age: 30
Tora Takagi (JPN) (R) (Road/street courses-only) 1999 Rankings (F1) : 20th (0 points, best finish of 7th)
Age: 26
Package: Lola B2K/00-Ford Cosworth
Sponsors: NEXTEL (#96), Pioneer (#97), ABB, Castrol

After splitting with his long-time partner Frank Arciero at the end of last year, Cal Wells is now pedalling the boat with his own oars this season, but the passion for success still burns brightly in him. Having ditched the anaemic Toyota motors which they had been trodding around since '96, PPI is now seeking to make proper inroads and register consistent points on the board, and to do this they have enlisted the services of Roberto Moreno, the oldest driver on the grid, who was elated to finally nab a full-time seat and hopes to make it count, especially with the solid Lola-Ford package at his disposal. As for the second car, Alex Barron is a decent quality for the ovals, while Japanese rookie Tora Takagi will be hoping his aggressive driving style will amount to much more here in CART than it did in F1, and with Japan having a CART race, hopes to further spur interest amongst his home fans.

Round 1: Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami (Homestead Miami Speedway) (March 3-5, 2000)

Paul Page: Racing is a high-speed game of dare, with danger lurking around every corner. This danger leads to a high range of emotions which can boil over into desperation, frustration, anger, disappointment and dejection. However with each tenth gained and each pass made glory waits, and with this glory comes a memorable writing into the history books. With testing done, the wait is over and the drivers are ready to race as they traverse across five continents in hot pursuit of the PPG Cup awaiting in Fontana. With that said, let's get down to the starting grid for the 2000 Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami.

The Race

At the start, Andretti, just like Montoya at Homestead, took off into the distance with Kanaan settling behind the Swift-Ford machine. That wouldn't last long however, as Max Wilson, who had made a lightning getaway, tried to maneuver past Kenny Brack into the Turn 3 kink and ended up clipping the Swede's left-rear wheel, sending both cars hard into the barriers, bringing out the second first-lap caution in the span of two races.
On the restart, Michael once more managed to pull away from TK, who quickly fell into the clutches of Vasser and Tony Stewart, the latter making up huge ground from 8th on the grid. As it always has, the Jacarepagua circuit proved to be pretty good at handling racing, and some took advantage of this more than others, including Dario Franchitti, yet again having to come behind from a lowly starting position and was up to 15th in a couple of laps, as well as Townsend Bell, who found himself inside the top 10, the low-drag Eagle chassis much more suited to the circuit's high-speed demands, ahead of Homestead race winner Juan Pablo Montoya , who was complaining incessantly about "sh**t throttle response, especially coming out of Turn 4.

Correcto, Bleu; actually just a result of circumstance: Robby Gordon lost control and crashed on his own, while Moreno slowed down to avoid him; however Papis who had been trying to lap him for some time couldn't slow down in time and stuffed it into the rear of Pupo and sent him into the barriers, putting the Brazilian out on the spot and Papis with suspension damage.

But hey, at least Patrick's still leading and Fernandez is very much in championship contention ;)

I'll probably do a proper race report from Adelaide onwards.

ataboy, Tony!! he can win in anything!

hope Dario steps it up at Adelaide. he should do fine there.

some good showings for mo nunn's young lady of war, even if she didn't score any points. we need to improve the Toyota engine's reliability, though...

Andretti leading the championship is definitely a positive, Panis was always a longer term project so I’m not too worried at this stage.

On the AAR side Mears hasn’t done much so far which is disappointing but Gordon has been okay, of course a little crashy but that’s not a massive surprise for him...

Gidley a great first race with a podium, but then fell off a bit in the second, so thats good and bad news. Bentham not so slightly looking good at the terms of the pace.

On the other hand, Team Rahal looked ok. Vasser with a great second race getting that P5 is a very big result for him. Kristensen is lucky to score some points at the end.

2000 Honda Indy 300 (April 7-9), Adelaide Street Circuit, Australia

The first street/road race of the 2000 FedEx CART World Series, held on the semi-pernamemt race course on Adelaide Down Under, replacing the Surfers Paradise street course, was met with huge fanfare. This track has a mixture of tight corners, flowing sections and a long back straight to sweeten things up, and this race had an extra attraction in the form of the first round of the V8 Supercars Championship (in which Craig Lowndes won the first race with Paul Radisich and Jason Bright clinching top honours in races 2 and 3 respectively) , along with it the smorgasbord of support events including the newly-introduced V8 SuperUtes, the second-tier Konica Minolta Supercar Series and the Touring Car Masters, and with the completion of a support-race paddock at Turns 13-15, meant that every team was able to settle in cosy, setting the stage for an exhilarating weekend of high-octane action. The roughly-230,000 or so spectators who turned up to witness this were certainly not going to be underwhelmed.....

This weekend saw the appearance of two new drivers, in the form of former Tyrrell/Arrows F1 racer Tora Takagi for PPI and Malaysian Alex Yoong for Della Pena, replacing Alex Barron and Max Wilson respectively. Qualifying went to Dario Franchitti by quite a stretch, the Scot qualifying four tenths ahead of Paul Tracy, with Olivier Panis mere hundredths behind, the Frenchman's prior knowledge of the circuit from his F1 days helping out a fair bit.

The Race
This race made history - not just being the first Australian race outside of Surfers Paradise - but also being the first race with the inclusion of standing starts in CART - with many drivers more accustomed to rolling starts, this was sure to be an interesting prospect.

As the lights went out, Franchitti made a quick getaway for the lead, followed by Tracy and Gil de Ferran, the latter having managed to clear Panis and Papis on the run to the Senna Chicane, the latter in fact having a minger of a start, falling from 4th to 8th in a handful of corners. Surprisingly, there were no stallers, although Helio Castroneves had a nightmare of a start, dropping all the way to the back, though that became academic anyway as his gearbox gave way on lap 4. Two laps later, Tony Stewart trying to move up from an average starting position got too greedy with the kerbs through the chicane, flinging him to the right-hand side of the circuit and munching it into the concrete. Fortunately Tony was unscathed, if visibly pissed having come off his first win in Rio. After the first caution, Franchitti retained the lead, while behind him Panis and Andretti went hammer and tong at each other, starting with Andretti making a massive dive at Dequettville, forcing Panis to go two wide with the veteran racer through the next two turns in which Andretti won out, where both Newman Haas cars went full AWOL, a fight which was settled when Panis made the decisive move on Andretti into the Mistral Hairpin two laps later. As all of this took place, Juan Pablo Montoya's Merc motor blew up down the Brabham Straight, sidelining the Colombian for the second race in a row.

Two laps later, Robby Gordon tapped the rear of Memo Gidley's Coyne machine into T11, looping him round, and as he came back onto the circuit Kenny Brack failed to spot a wild AAR car and speared into the rear of Gordon, putting the #36 into the barriers and Brack out with suspension damage. At the second restart, Franchitti once again pulled away, however behind him was a train of hungry cars, namely Tracy, de Ferran, the two K-Mart cars of Panis and Andretti, while Roberto Moreno managed to form his own train behind him. Such was the intensity of the battling that P2 to P5 were separated by one and a quarter seconds at one point, and all off this was Dario's gain as he continued to stretch his advantage. Kristensen and Papis started to make inroads, the Dane even managing the fastest lap as he got to grips with these shrieking machines. The next couple of laps would turn out to be somewhat uneventful, though the skill displayed by these drivers were fun to watch from a fan's standpoint, Alex Zanardi in particular as he swung his car about with reckless abandon, particularly through the final sector of the lap. Things got juicier, however, as Paul Tracy put one wheel too much on the kerbs into T3, running wide and allowing Panis to slip by, with Gil de Ferran making a brave pass on the Canuck into the relatively quick T10. Paul would get Papis back and rushed to catch de Ferran and Panis back, something made easier when de Ferran tripped over Alex Yoong coming onto the frontstretch and spun round , thankfully having not ate anything resembling wall. Tracy eventually did pass Panis, but was still under heavy pressure from the French rookie, in which he cracked under as he locked up into Dequettville on the following lap, resulting in Panis getting back into P2, a position he held to the flag.

But out in front, Dario Franchitti was the undisputed star of the show as he crushed the opposition en route to his first win of the year and thus kickstarting his championship charge. Panis was utterly elated over his first podium in the series, with Michael Andretti coming over to embrace him, while Paul Tracy was content but still slightly disappointed with 3rd, admitting that he had "made a couple of retarded mistakes". Max Papis and Tom Kristensen made fantastic charges to end up 4th and 5th, while de Ferran and Andretti ran out of steam come race end and had to settle for P6 and P7. Memo Gidley continued his points-scoring run in 8th, ahead of Alex Zanardi who scored his first points of the year, while Vasser once again fell back, only just finishing ahead of Tony Kanaan and Jenson Button, the latter pleased to take his first points. Tora Takagi and Roberto Moreno's days ended sadly with mechanical woes, while Adrian Fernandez never really got into motion and wound up 15th.
