NASCAR unveils 1985 calendar
Following the Champion Spark Plug 400, NASCAR showcased the calendar for the upcoming 1985 season. The calendar sees an expansion from 30 to 31 points-paying races, with 4 new circuits added, and an additional exhibition race at Charlotte. Most notably, as theorised earlier in the year, one of these new races will be taking place at the newly-constructed Calder Park Thunderdome, in Melbourne, Australia. The track, heavily financed by the Goodyear tire company, is fittingly named the Goodyear 500, and will take place on March 10.

The other new additions to the calendar include the first edition of what NASCAR is billing as its 'All-Star' race - The Winston at Charlotte, to be held the day before the Coca-Cola World 600. On top of this, the June race at Riverside, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, has been moved to Sears Point, a road course situated between San Francisco and Sacramento. Dover's date in May has been moved to the Phoenix International Raceway, where it will make up one half of what some are now billing as NASCAR's Western swing to close the season. The final change concerns the second date at Nashville, held following the Firecracker 400. This has been moved to the Watkins Glen road course, and pushed back about a month to fill the gap between the second races at Michigan and Bristol.
