1923 AIACR World Championship

Post by girry »

Welcome, all of you prospective team owners!

Today is January the 1st, 1923, which means it is finally time for the inaugural AIACR World Championship season for Grand Prix racing to begin.

As a team owner in this game, your focus will be neither on car development, nor really even on your financial situation. Instead, the most important thing to manage is politics. After all, in a post-WW1 world, bringing your cars to the racetrack may prove to be the most difficult of all challenges!

In this championship, you may wield your political power by making important decisions within your national Automobile Club (AIACR, after all stands for "International Association of International Automobile Clubs") - vote on rulesets, select the race tracks in your countries, decide on political alignments with the powers-that-be, organize boycotts of your rival countries, GP’s and World Championship, and so much more. The more cunning your moves, the better!

Hoping to get at least a few entrants because my intention is to simulate this universe until the WWII at the very least. Hopefully even longer. :ugeek:

Image

To join the game - just post your intention to do so on this thread, state the name of your owner and select whether you wish to manage a factory team (in which case, please state which team) or a privateer (in which case, also state where your team is based).

AVAILABLE TEAMS (LINK)

Factory teams will always get an annual income on January the 1st. The amount depends on the whims of their factory. Factory teams are not allowed to buy cars, and are only allowed to sell cars at the permission of their factory. On the other hand, privateers start with $1500, are free to base their operations anywhere in the world, but no annual income. Note that if a privateer does well enough they may be asked by a factory team to become their factory team instead.

Factory teams that do not get a manager will be managed by girry-AI.

Privateer teams will get $1500 of cash but no annual income (other than possible extra funding from their national government if success is achieved). They are able to use any car and get to have their base anywhere in the world. Note that if a privateer does well enough, a struggling factory outfit may ask one to become their factory team instead!

AI-managed privateers might also enter the occasional race.

Word of warning though - the odds are heavily stacked in favour of the factory teams, at least at the beginning of the game!

Car development is automatic and more or less follows the reality (so factory teams will get new shiny cars in their factory automatically - unless the make has a BMW moment & pulls out, of course :sauber:), as does driver skill development. All drivers in the game are real and have realistic talent levels. However, drivers gain experience only by going races (and also improve as they enter their prime / decline as they age and exit it).

Driver injuries and deaths will occur through RNG. Hence they are, in fact, fairly likely. So be careful fielding certain IRL famous names too much on the most dangerous circuits of the era - or you might open some sliding doors...

Image

Gameplay is very simple for the team owners. Before each season, there are two phases where you need to make bids, either on this forum thread or through discord. (If you fail to do this, don't worry - your decisions will be AI simulated.) The rest of the season will go through automatically.

Phase 1) Bid on drivers, buy your cars & vote on issues in your Automobile Club

Bidding on drivers is simple - just send a list of drivers & bids you wish to make on in order of priority. The highest bid wins, unless the bid is so small the driver does not wish to accept it, or one of the bids is from his local team, in which case the driver may be more likely to join your team. You can sign unlimited drivers, though after you sign your third driver, the drivers become gradually less likely to accept your bids.

LIST OF AVAILABLE DRIVERS (LINK)

Buying your cars is also simple. Either a) you agree on a fee with a fellow team to buy their old engine and chassis, or b) buy a chassis on the free market - just make your bids; the highest bid wins, this time regardless of nationality.

The issues to vote are subject to change annually. Throughout the season, you will be able to raise issues for the following year - only your imagination (and the AIACR boss’s discretion) is the limit on what you may propose for 1924.

In the meantime, here are the 1923 issues all members of the Automobile Clubs will be able to vote for. The option that gets a majority of the votes will win. (If there are fewer than five human players voting, some AI teams will also use their votes.)

1. What should be the length of the World Championship Races? [/b]
(300 Miles, 500 Miles or Free Choice between 300 and 1000km)
2. Will the Constructors' Championship suffice or should there be one for Drivers as well?
(Constructors / Constructors & Drivers)
3. Which Points-System shall the World Championship adhere to?
(The real 1925 WC system / AAA championship system / 8-6-4-3-2-fastest lap / other suggestions?)
4. Should the German Automobile Club be permitted to rejoin as a Full Member from 1924 onwards?
(Yes / No)

ITALY ONLY:
5. Which ruleset should the Italian Championship run to?
(Formula Libre / max 2000cc, same as the World Championship / max 1500cc)
6. Should foreign entries be permitted?
(Yes / No)
7. Which Points-System shall the Italian Championship adhere to?
(The real 1925 WC system / AAA championship system / 8-6-4-3-2-fastest lap / other suggestions?)

UK ONLY:
8. Should the UK host a National GP in 1924?
(Yes, Each team pays a fee of $500 to host a GP in 1924 / No)

Phase 2) Select the events you wish to take part in

No team is going be able to take part in every event, so as team owner you will have to prioritize events. To enter events, just select the events where you wish to enter your cars #1, #2, #3 etc. and then enter your drivers accordingly. Your team will proceed to try to enter them if it has money to enter them, and enough teams / drivers to race. (Calendar will be found below this section)

You may also request your driver to PUSH HARD at any selected event, which means a similar boost as a favourite track will be used - but his error proneness will also double!

If a driver crashes out of the race with an accident, their car will have to be sent back to the shop. The cost will be covered by insurance, however the car may have to miss races.

In 1923 there are three championships, with the most prestigious, World Championship events bolded. In addition to the World Championship, there is also the Italian Drivers’ Championship and the AAA Championship in America. If a country hosts enough non championship races, they might also organize a national championship of their own. Each race will be simulated and results posted here and on Discord. A full season will take around 3 to 4 weeks to sim.

Image

SEASON CALENDAR (LINK)

Travel/Entry Costs:
Crossing the Atlantic, USA - United Kingdom, USA - Brazil or Brazil - USA: 45 days, fee: $1000 + $100 per car
Moving the team to a neighbouring country by road network - 4 days. (France and UK, and UK and Ireland are considered neighbouring countries.)
Entry fee for a regular race in home country: $50 per car
Entry fee for a regular race abroad: $100 per car
Entry fee for a World Championship GP: $400 per team

Entry form example (this imaginary team has two cars and three drivers available):
Targa Florio - Car 1 and Car 2 - drivers: A. Stooge, B. Stooge (in order of priority)
Circuito di Cremona - Car 1 and Car 2 - drivers: A. Stooge, B. Stooge
Grand Prix de France - Car 1 - drivers: B. Stooge, C. Stooge
Gran Premio do San Sebastian - Car 2 - drivers: A. Stooge
Beverly Hills Race Autumn - Car 1 and Car 2 - drivers: A. Stooge, B. Stooge, C. Stooge

This imaginary race plan (which, for the record, is *not* financially the smartest race plan - but alas) would incur the total cost of 2*$50 (Targa Florio entry fee) + 2*$50 (Cremona entry fee) + $400 (French GP entry fee) + $100 (San Sebastian entry fee) + $1200 (crossing the Atlantic with two cars) + 2*$100 (Beverly Hills entry fee) = $2100.

Using this race plan with more than two drivers, will help to deal with emergencies. If A. or B. Stooge are injured or dead, they will be replaced by C. Stooge at the French GP and at Beverly Hills - not at the Cremona nor at the San Sebastian, however.

Don’t forget to check the ruleset of the race you are planning to attend! If the car you enter will not comply to the ruleset of the race, you will be disqualified but pay the entry fees anyway.

Rules

World Championship - rules that are set in stone:
To be classified for a World Championship GP, a driver must finish the entire race alone, without relief or a riding mechanic.
To classify for the final standings of the World Championship, a constructor / a driver must start at least two races. Otherwise they will not be classified.
To be classified as a World Championship, the Championship must have at least four events on at least two different continents.
To classify for the World Championship event, the driver must use a car that complies to the pre-agreed rules of the World Championship. Otherwise the car will not be classified for points.

World Championship Rules that are set in stone for 1923 and 1924 but are subject to change for the years after
Only full member countries of AIACR have a right to host a World Championship GP.
The engine capacity must be a maximum of 2000cc (2.0 litres) in size.

Prize money for the World Championship: $25 000 for the winning constructor if a drivers’ championship does not exist, or $12 500 for the constructor if a drivers’ championship exists
Prize money for a World Championship event victory: $10 000

Italian Championship
Prize money for the Italian Championship: $10 000 (if foreign entries are permitted) or $5 000 (if foreign entries are not permitted)

AAA Championship
Prize money for the AAA Championship: $10 000
The engine capacity must be a maximum of 2000cc (2.0 litres) in size.

For the “races abroad” purposes, the ingame countries are the same as the actual 1923 countries.

For home team / home track purposes, countries are treated as a single region - with the following exceptions to make it fairer because the vast majority of drivers are from a handful of countries (so a driver with hometown in France won’t have 800 favourite tracks etc):
- USA is split into the real States
- UK is split into Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Northern England, Midlands and Southern England
- Spain is split into Spain, Basque Country and Catalunya
- France is split into Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Corsica, Southeastern France, Occitanie, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, Nouvelle-Atlantique, Brittany, Normandy, Haute-de-France, Île-de-France, Northeastern France, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Central France
- Italy is split into Libya, Sardinia, Sicily, Southern Italy, Central Italy, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Northwestern Italy, Lombardy and Southeastern italy
- Germany is split into Bavaria, Southwestern Germany, Northwestern Germany and Eastern Germany

Drivers are more likely to join a team whose headquarters are on the same region as their hometown. They are also more likely to perform better on a track that is located on the same region as their hometown.

Napier would like to approach the following drivers:
  • Image Malcolm Campbell
  • Image Henry Segrave
  • Image Count Louis Zborowski

We only wish to retain their services for Formula Libre races though, naturally - we would absolutely encourage them to find drives with other teams for races we cannot attend

Aislabie, assuming that you are offering them a salary of $0 each?

--

PLEASE NOTE THAT SIGNUPS ARE STILL OPEN.

In the meantime, here's the full list of drivers you can bid for. Note that if a driver is wealthy enough but gets no offers, they may be tempted to accepting even a negative salary!

Image
Jules Goux.

France:
The founders of Grand Prix racing had a poor 1922, with the major Grand Prix victories going to Italy. It was of little comfort to the French that the young André Dubonnet and Dribus snapped up one victory each at the less important season-ending races at Monza and Madonie.

However, the biggest expectations for 1923 remain on the shoulders of Jules Goux. Despite his unfortunate year 1922 in the unreliable Ballot, the 1913 Indy 500 and the 1921 Italian GP winner must surely be one of the favourites for the World Championship should he only find the equipment to match his talent. Do not forget that many famous, experienced and accomplished French pre-war drivers such as Louis Wagner, Victor Hémery and René Thomas are also looking to enter the new championship.

Image
Louis Wagner.

Other available French drivers:
Henri Rougier
Ernest Friderich
Jean Chassagne
Albert Divo
Robert Sénéchal
Edmond Bourlier
Jules Moriceau
Henry Stoffel
Albert Guyot
Gaston Delalande
André Lefebvre
Bertrand Lucigne
Antoine Mourre
Bertrand de Cystria

Image
Pietro Bordino.

Italy:
1922 was the year of Fiat and their Turinese stars Pietro Bordino and Felice Nazzaro. The 42-year-old Nazzaro has enjoyed success all over the world both before and after the war, culminating in a victory at the French GP after Bordino's rear axle failed with just two laps to go. However, the 35-year old took his revenge at the Italian GP, marking his first international victory. With his two victories on the local stage in Italy, Count Giulio Masetti was the most successful driver with his victories at Targa Florio and Coppa Montenero. Ernesto Ceirano, Alfieri Maserati and Guido Meregalli managed to grab one victory each. Despite their weaker years Nando Minoia's and Giuseppe Campari's names are also worth mentioning. Last but not least, over in the States, the Apulian emigrant Ralph DePalma may have had a weaker year in 1922 but the 40-year-old's reputation as perhaps the best driver in America throughout the 1910's has not taken many hits.

Image
Felice Nazzaro.

Antonio Ascari
Meo Costantini
Carlo Masetti
Maria Antonietta d'Avanzo
Gastone Brilli-Peri
Caberto Conelli
Enzo Ferrari
Guido Meregalli
Emilio Materassi
Ugo Sivocci
Eugenio Silvani
Carlo Salamano
Ogniben Alverà
Enrico Giaccone
Pierre Marco
Deo Chiribiri

Image
Jimmy Murphy.

United States:
Surely the most famous American driver, Jimmy Murphy has victories in both the US and in Europe, having already won the 1921 French GP for Duesenberg. Having also won the 1922 Indianapolis 500 and the AAA championship, the 29-year-old Californian must be considered one of the favourites for the 1923 title, should he decides to contest for it of course. His most notable competitor has been Tommy Milton from Minnesota. Despite only having one functional eye, he was the Indy 500 winner and the AAA champion in 1921 and runner-up in 1922. Other 1922 winners involve Harry Hartz, Frank Elliott and Bennett Hill. Do not count count out old foxes Eddie Hearne, Howdy Wilcox and Earl Cooper either.

Image
Tommy Milton.

Other American drivers available:
Dave Lewis
Joe Thomas
John DuPuy
Art Klein
Joe Boyer
Cliff Durant
Ora Haibe
Al Melcher
L.L. Corum
Jerry Wonderlich
Wade Morton
Cornelius Van Ranst
Leon Duray
Pete DePaolo
Red Shafer
Herbert Scheel
Harlan Fengler
Fred Comer

Image
Christian Lautenschlager.

Germany:
Surely the most famous German motor racer, the Stuttgart racer Christian Lautenschlager has raced Mercedes cars in a part-time fashion. However, his team's entry in the Italian GP fell through due to metal workers' strikes in Germany, so not much is known about the 46-year-old's present ability. Do keep an eye on the 30-year-old Christian Werner, who seemed to have been the quickest Mercedes driver in 1922; fellow pre-war Mercedes drivers such as Otto Salzer and Max Sailer are also available.

Other available German drivers:
Carl Jörns
Franz Horner
Willy Walb

Image
Dario Resta.

United Kingdom:
Born in Faenza, Italy but representing the UK, Dario Resta won everything that he could win in America and retired in 1918. However, now that Europe has settled after the War, the rumour has it that Resta, 38, is looking to make a comeback. Do also keep an eye on the former WW1 aircraft pilot Henry Segrave. Raised in Ireland, the Eton College graduate has developed a keen interest in motor racing and already displayed quite a bit of talent even on the International stage.

Other available British drivers:
Woolf Barnato
Ernest Eldridge
Clive Gallop

Image
Pierre de Vizcaya.

Spain:
The son of a wealthy Alsatian financier, driving for his local Bugatti team but representing Spain, Pierre de Vizcaya had a successful 1922 finishing second at the French GP and third in the Italian GP. His brother Fernand is also looking to enter some GP's in 1923.

Image
Arthur Duray.

Belgium:
The famous Belgian driver and aviator Arthur Duray, 40, is a famous international driver with nearly twenty years of racing experience from all over the World. His most famous achievements remain a victory at the Circuit des Ardennes in 1906 and the Moscow-St Petersburg race in 1907.

Canada:
Ira Vail, 29, already has a lot of experience in the American championship. Hailing from Quebec, Vail has not become the most famous driver on earth but with his two victories and a bunch of podiums in the American races, Vail has proven to be a capable driver.

Poland:
Born in London to an American family and heir to the Astor empire, Louis Zborowski is possibly the wealthiest racing driver in the world. His achievements in the wheel of a racing car are so far limited, but the Count makes it up with his enthusiasm and dedication to high speed.

Ireland:
Born in London but representing Ireland, Kenelm Lee Guinness is famous for holding the current speed record on a racetrack, standing at 136 miles per hour. Promisingly, Guinness won three Voiturette races in 1922, and is surely expecting to replicate the success on a grander stage.

Switzerland:
An emigrant to the United States, Louis Chevrolet has had a decent career as a racing driver and several victories in the US, however his focus seems to be moving towards developing Frontenac, the automobile manufacturer that he established with his younger brothers in 1916.

Austria:
The three Austrians, Alfred Neubauer, Hermann Rützler and Robert Siercke, are relatively unknown on the international stage. Neubauer, turning 32 this year, is the oldest of the trio.

Argentina:
Very little is known about the young Argentinians Raúl Riganti and Martín de Álzaga.

---

The full list of cars available to bid for is on the spreadsheet, but that concerns only Porco Rosso for now.

Issues to vote:

What should be the length of the World Championship Races?
500 Miles
Will the Constructors' Championship suffice or should there be one for Drivers as well?
Constructors & Drivers
Which Points-System shall the World Championship adhere to?
The real 1925 WC system
Should the German Automobile Club be permitted to rejoin as a Full Member from 1924 onwards?
Yes
Should the UK host a National GP in 1924?
Yes

So, uh, when it comes to bidding on drivers, we only have one car, so it would be nice maybe to have a second car... Therefore we'll buy one of the Miller 122 Durants for whatever the going rate is ($100 or something?). We also want Segrave, but Kevinbotz has already bid $500 on him. Therefore we're going to bid $550 on him for two years (so $550 both years). With our second car we can also get a second driver. I'm going to bid on Cliff Durant - with his four wives and excessive hobbies such as yachting, flying, driving fast cars, and dating actresses, I can't imagine a more stable pick for our team. The Durant team appear to be offering him minus figures to turn up - therefore we'll offer him $100 and say that he can race any track he wants to (I am happy for this to be an RNG).

In response to Sunbeam's upping of the bid for Segrave, we're also upping to $802, but just for one year this time

News

Bamford and Martin Ltd. is very upset with their team manager Earl of Sandwich who has shown a lack of faith in their cars. The board has given the Earl an ultimatum. He must either remove the bid he has made for a rival constructor's car, or face losing whatever support the Aston Martin factory - already in deep financial turmoil - is currently giving his race team!

The Earl of Sandwich shall return all of his offers, and just keep the Cliff Durant one for driving around in Formula Libre.

If Durant isn't interested, we'll pursue Clive Gallop for the next best bid + $1

Scuderia Porco Rosso would like to field a single driver. The order of preference for drivers are as follows:

1. Enzo Ferrari ($300)
2. Antonio Ascari ($100)
3. Carlo Masetti ($100)

The team shall buy a Diatto 20S for $200.

Vote Results
- The WC host race will decide on the race length itself
- Championships will be awarded for both constructors and drivers
- Both the World Championship and the Italian Championship will adhere to the real 1925 WC system (winner 1 pt, 2nd 2 pt, 3rd 3pt, other finishers 4pt, non finishers 5pt, did not participate 6pt. There will be one dropped score.
- The German Automobile Club will be a full AIACR member from 1924
- The Italian Championship will run to 2000cc regulations. Concerned about the number of entries, the Sicilian hosts of Targa Florio have decided to break away from the Italian Championship to host a Formula Libre race instead!
- Foreign entries will be permitted in the Italian Championship
- The UK will host a World Championship GP in 1924

Your next duty is registering for the races.

You may register for the races either a) publicly on the thread, or b) if you wish to keep your entries hidden, privately by sending me a message here or on discord!

- If you enter races where your car is illegal, you will be DSQ from the race but lose the entry fee anyway. So take care when registering for the races! In 1923 I will notify you for doing this and give you a chance to fix your mistake, but in 1924, I will not. :balestre:
- If you enter too many races and run out of money mid-season, your team will simply not turn up for the races after that. Again, in 1923, I will notify you for your errors.
- If a race has fewer than 10 entrants, there is an increasing chance to cancel it. 9 entrant means a 10% chance the race will be cancelled, 8 entrants 20% chance, etc. until 3 entrants and 70% chance. Fewer than 3 entrants means the race will be cancelled in any case!

Ok so Aston Martin are going to take part in the Italian races for a while. We're going to head over there in the Spring and take part in the Targa Florio, the Circuito di Cremonda, the Circuito di Mugello, Circuito di Savio, the Coppa Montenero and finally the Gran Premio d'Italia.

After that we'll return home for any repairs (I guess if the car gets wrecked at any time we'll head home early and cancel the remaining races on the Italian tour), and then end our 1923 season with an entry at the Junior Car Club 200.

That will be $900 for entry costs, and I believe as our car will be in Italy most of the time, that we are able to make each race we've entered. That leaves us $1000 spare for repairs and the like.

I would love for Cliff Durant to PUSH HARD at the Gran Premio d'Italia and the Junior Car Club 200.

Considering that most French events are only open to 1500cc cars, we'll take our two Voisin Laboratoire cars to Italy to run the full Italian Championship with both cars. We'll also enter two cars in the French Grand Prix, and a single car for Chassagne for the Italian and Spanish Grands Prix, and a single car for Dubonnet in the Targa Florio.

Alright, gonna start simming 1923 in a moment.

Have decided that at any point of the season everybody who can afford it is allowed to make bids for any drivers which have no existing contract with a team. Privateers can also do so to get additional cars. However, mid-season there's an administrative fee of $50 you must pay before each bid for any additional drivers or cars (in addition to whatever sum you bid for them).

If you succeed in signing a car+driver mid-season you can also make entries for them, but *only* for the drivers/cars you sign mid-season.

Also, I will go on to sim the season at my own pace. So if all your drivers happen to f.ex. die, you have no reserves and you don't notice it quick enough but instead, the season has already proceeded - then well, too bad for you. Remember, that there's always pre-season with ample time to prepare for such occurrences. :|
