1930s Points - Lewis Hamilton is a 7-time World Champion

Post by Bobby Doorknobs »

This is an alternative championship that uses the points system of the European Championship in the 1930s. This system was interesting in that the driver with the least points was declared champion and was broken down as follows:

1st = 1 point
2nd = 2 points
3rd = 3 points
>75% of the race completed = 4 points
50-75% completed = 5 points
25-50% completed = 6 points
<25% completed = 7 points
Not entering, not starting or disqualification from the race = 8 points
In the case of shared drives only the original driver who started the race in the shared car would score the points (e.g. at the 1951 French GP Fagioli would have been awarded the 1 point for winning while Fangio would have scored 4 points for his original car that he handed over to Fagioli).

So let's begin with the inaugural season:

1950

A very interesting one to start with. Fangio's reliability problems during the season don't impact his chances as much as in reality because he got far enough into the races he retired from to minimise the damage. Farina's chances on the other hand were handicapped by the first lap pile-up at Monaco and scoring 7 points as a result. Going into the final race Fangio has a 4 point lead over Fagioli with Farina a further 2 points back. Fangio's gearbox failed just past 25% distance, meaning he would score 6 points, putting Farina out of contention. Fagioli had to win to take the title but in the end only finished 3rd.

Because so many drivers take part and score points I will only list the top 20 for most seasons. Also note how the Indy 500 doesn't interfere with the standings as much.

Final standings:

1. Juan Manuel Fangio 25 pts.
2. Giuseppe Farina 26 pts.
3. Luigi Fagioli 26 pts.

And now for:

1951

This year we have six different drivers in contention for the title in the final round with Fangio and Ascari tied on 28 points, González and Villoresi on 31, and Farina and Rosier on 33. With Ferrari's tyre troubles Fangio took an easy victory to take his second straight title.

As promised, here's the rest of the 1950s:

1953

Again not much to say, some drivers higher in the standings, some lower, Ascari still dominates:

Image

1. Alberto Ascari 25 pts.
2. Giuseppe Farina 34 pts.
3. Mike Hawthorn 35 pts.
4. Juan Manuel Fangio 37 pts.
5. Luigi Villoresi 37 pts.
6. Toulo de Graffenried 46 pts.
7. Louis Rosier 47 pts.
8. Felice Bonetto 48 pts.
9. Onofre Marimón 50 pts.
10. Maurice Trintignant 50 pts.
11. José Froilán González 55 pts.
12. Jean Behra 55 pts.
13. Stirling Moss 57 pts.
14. Harry Schell 57 pts.
15. Alan Brown 57 pts.
16. Johnny Claes 57 pts.
17. Ken Wharton 58 pts.
18. Prince Bira 60 pts.
19. Peter Collins 60 pts.
20. Kenneth McApline 61 pts.

1954

Fangio becomes the first triple world champion a year early and Prince Bira could've been in the running for 3rd or even 2nd overall had he not missed the Swiss and Italian Grands Prix:

Image

1. Juan Manuel Fangio 21 pts.
2. Maurice Trintignant 40 pts.
3. Mike Hawthorn 45 pts.
4. José Froilán González 45 pts.
5. Karl Kling 49 pts.
6. Prince Bira 50 pts.
7. Roberto Mieres 52 pts.
8. Sergio Mantovani 53 pts.
9. Stirling Moss 54 pts.

17. Onofre Marimón 61 pts.
18. Luigi Villoresi 62 pts.
19. André Pilette 63 pts.
20. Giuseppe Farina 64 pts.

1955

Fangio does it again with the championship decided in the final round at Monza. However it looked unlikely that Moss could overhaul a 4-point deficit and his chances were gone with an engine failure just after half distance:

Image

1. Juan Manuel Fangio 20 pts.
2. Stirling Moss 28 pts.
3. Maurice Trintignant 33 pts.
4. Roberto Mieres 34 pts.
5. Luigi Musso 35 pts.
6. Eugenio Castellotti 36 pts.

13. Harry Schell 47 pts.
14. Louis Rosier 47 pts.
15. Cesare Perdisa 48 pts.
16. Hermano da Silva Ramos 48 pts.
17. José Froilán González 50 pts.
18. Carlos Menditeguy 51 pts.
19. Luigi Villoresi 51 pts.
20. Ken Wharton 51 pts.

1956

This season we get an exciting finale in Monza with four drivers in contention and leading them is none other than Jean Behra with Collins 2 points behind him, Fangio 2 points behind Collins and Moss 2 points behind Fangio. Behra had had impeccable reliability all season but his Maserati let him down at the worst possible moment, going out just before half distance with a steering problem. Fangio's title hopes were finished due to a similar issue. This left Collins as the only man who could overhaul (or underhaul!) Behra's tally, as the Frenchman had made it far enough into the race to leave Moss unable to beat him. This race is of course remembered for Collins' display of sportsmanship in giving Fangio his car so he can take his 4th title. This time however Collins' famous act actually helps him seal the title for himself with Fangio bringing the car home in 2nd. The final standings are:

Image

1. Peter Collins 30 pts.
2. Jean Behra 32 pts.
3. Stirling Moss 33 pts.
4. Juan Manuel Fangio 34 pts.
5. Eugenio Castellotti 47 pts.
6. Paco Godia 47 pts.

8. Louis Rosier 48 pts.

17. Maurice Trintignant 54 pts.
18. André Pilette 56 pts.
19. Pat Flaherty 57 pts.
20. Olivier Gendebien 57 pts.

1957

17. Wolfgang von Trips 55 pts.
18. Jo Bonnier 55 pts.
19. Horace Gould 56 pts.
20. Sam Hanks 57 pts.

1958

This year the FIA introduced a World Championship for Constructors, using the same points system as the Drivers' Championship. Only the highest-placed car in each event would score points and the Indy 500 wouldn't count, so the constructors don't gain 8 points for missing it. This year Luigi Musso was a title contender. He was equal in points with his teammate and rival Hawthorn until his tragic death at the French GP. Hawthorn's rivals for the rest of the season were not only Stirling Moss, but also BRM driver Harry Schell. However both of Hawthorn's rivals went out early in the Italian GP allowing him to clinch the title with one race remaining. Also, Ferrari won the inaugural Constructors' Championship thanks mainly to the fact that Vanwall didn't make the trip to Argentina for the start of the season!

1960

Brabham was not quite so dominant in the points as in reality with McLaren leading the championship for the first half of the season and even Ferrari with their outdated "horse pulls the cart" philosophy had a mathematical chance in the final round with Phil Hill (although the mass boycott of Monza admittedly played into their hands). Black Jack still pulled through to defend his title.

Drivers' Championship:

1961

With the new 1.5 litre formula Ferrari dominate with the beautiful "sharknose" 156. Von Trips drops from 2nd to 4th in the standings because of his fatal crash early on in the Italian GP. He was 1 point behind Hill going into this race.

Drivers' Championship:

1962

The unreliability of the Lotus package means Clark's championship challenge peters out much earlier than in reality, losing runner-up spot to McLaren. Tony Maggs impressively finishes 4th and Carel Godin de Beaufort is in the top ten ahead of French GP winner Gurney! :)

1963

Clark dominated and set a new record for least points scored in a season at 16, 4 less than the previous record set by Fangio in 1955. He also set a record for biggest winning margin, at 20 points, another record originally set by Fangio in 1954.

1964

This year there were four different drivers with a shot at the title in the final round: BRM teammates Hill and Ginther were on 30 and 32 points respectively, Clark was on 36 points. Surtees and Bandini both had 37 points but Bandini didn't have a chance as even if he were to finish level on points with Hill with the others behind in the table, Hill would win on countback. Surtees dropped out of contention as soon as the flag dropped, as Hill took the start, meaning Hill would score 7 points at most. Clark led comfortably but needed Hill to drop out before half distance to seal the title. This never happened and once Hill completed his 33rd lap, the title was his.

1965

Lotus' decision to compete in the Indy 500 was a risky one as their main contender Jim Clark would score 8 points for missing Monaco. He then proceeded to win the next five races and had a respectable lead over reigning champion Graham Hill. However he dropped out of the lead at Monza due to a fuel-pump failure and an engine failure at Watkins Glen meant he was trailing the more consistent Hill by 2 points going into the final round in Mexico. Once again his engine let him down and Hill would become the second triple World Champion in the sport's history.

1966

The unreliability throughout the field as a result of the new 3-litre formula was such that Guy Ligier was 2nd in the championship after Zandvoort! Unfortunately we did not get the novelty of having a reject runner-up as Ligier was injured in a crash at the Nürburgring and was out for the rest of the season. The title once again went down to the final round with Rindt still having a mathematical chance but in need of a miracle. Brabham won the title.

This is really interesting, please keep doing this until the present!

Normally I post predictions of alternative championships, but can't really this time as I find it a tad confusing. But some possible champion changes I reckon could be:

1977: Scheckter (due to Lauda missing the end of the season)
1988: Prost
1994: Hill (Schumi's DQs and ban will cost him dear)
1999: Irvine
2003: Raikkonen
2007: Hamilton
2010: Alonso

I reckon 2012 could go to Räikkönen, what with finishing every race...

Now to finish the '60s and get started on the '70s.

1969

Again, not much different.

8. Brabham-Repco 84 pts.
9. Brabham-Climax 87 pts.
10. Eagle-Climax 88 pts.

1970

Rindt's fatal accident at Monza cost him dearly as he would score 8 points in each round from Italy to the end of the season, almost certainly losing the title in the process. This results in a five-way battle for the Drivers' Championship between Brabham, Stewart, Ickx, Amon and even Henri Pescarolo! There's also a four-way battle for the Constructors' Championship between Lotus, March, Brabham and Ferrari. In his last season, Jack Brabham wins the title for the fourth time, as many as Graham Hill and the only person to do it in three different decades. Lotus and March are equal in points but Lotus take the Constructors' Championship with more victories. In addition, Bellasi have the unenviable distinction of becoming the first constructor to score over 100 points in a season.

Drivers' Championship:

It would be interesting to see how Max Chilton will fare in 2013 with his 0% DNF rate.

Wow, a 44-year-old champion? Brilliant stuff.

Now I'm wondering about Nick Heidfeld being 2008 champ finishing all the races. That would be LEGENDARY.

Come to think of it, there will be some very high scores in 1994... Damon has a good chance then, I reckon.

Re: 1930s Points System Alternative Championship

As I was doing these three seasons I noticed that the battle for minor positions in the Constructors' Championship becomes nail-bitingly close between teams that weren't frequent podium finishers. At this point in time a constructor usually got at least one car to the end of the race, so teams in the midfield like Surtees and March would score 4 points nearly every weekend and needed to hope for a podium or reliability problems for other teams to gain an advantage. Expect to see more of this as we move towards the present day. Anyway:

1971

Stewart wins without much difficulty. Lotus' gas turbine experiment results in a very low finishing position for them.

Drivers' Championship:

Once again same champion, but other than that we almost get two Fittipaldis in the top ten, Williams are 6th in their first full season as a constructor and Ferrari finish a record low of 10th because they missed the Dutch and German GPs!

1974

The battle for this year's championship is more or less the same, except for the outcome. Clay Regazzoni becomes Ferrari's first World Champion since 1961. McLaren may have lost their first Drivers' Championship, but they still have their first Constructors' title.

Drivers' Championship:

1. Clay Regazzoni 49 pts.

7. Carlos Reutemann 64 pts,

10. Denny Hulme 66 pts.
11. Jacky Ickx 71 pts.

Re: 1930s Points System Alternative Championship

Post by Bobby Doorknobs »

1975

This was the first season in which half-points were awarded for red-flagged races. This of course creates a problem for the 1930s points system. I didn't feel that it would make sense to award double points for the Spanish and Austrian GPs. Non-starters would already have been awarded 8 points when the race started for example, with most of the finishers scoring the same amount. So I awarded normal points with the shortened distance treated as the full distance (for example in the Spanish GP points were awarded as a percentage of 29 laps completed rather than the scheduled 75). Anyway Lauda is the champion and Ferrari win their first Constructors' title in 14 years.

EDIT: Change of plan for the points system. As suggested by dr-baker, half-points have been awarded for the shortened races, for reasons he explained below, which resulted in some shuffling of the minor places in both championships. The champions stay the same.

Drivers' Championship:

1. Niki Lauda 34.5

1976 will be interestid, with Lauda missing the races and Hunt retiring from a couple. Same with 1977, because of Lauda missing the last two rounds.

This strikes me as a sensible solution, but it would be interesting to see if double points for Spain and Austria (or some variant, such as double points for finishers up to a maximum of 8 points) would have made much of a difference to the season results.

Incidentally, I am finding this a very interesting championship - to the extent that I find myself sneaking a quick look at work each day to see if you have added any more years. Well done!

Sorry I haven't posted anything today everyone, it was a busy day for me but now here's:

1976

When Lauda made his comeback at Monza he had a 2-point lead over Hunt and Scheckter. Going into the final round at Fuji Lauda and Hunt were equal in points with Scheckter 1 point behind and Regazzoni still mathematically in contention (albeit 7 points behind the leading pair). Lauda withdrew at the end of lap 2, eliminating him from the championship as the race progressed. Scheckter never really looked in contention and dropped out altogether in the closing stages. Hunt became McLaren's first World Champion. Ferrari only defended the Constructors' title by 1 point from Tyrrell (that close to a six-wheeled champion) and a consistent showing from Shadow all season saw them finish 4th with one podium to their name.

Drivers' Championship:

1. James Hunt 56 pts.

I would haved LOVED if the P34 had won this...

And as regards half-point races, how about halving the points here too? It would still make a bit of sense in my mind.

1st = 1/2 point
2nd = 1 point
3rd = 1.5 points
>75% of the race completed = 2 points
50-75% completed = 2.5 points
25-50% completed = 3 points
<25% completed = 3.5 points
Not entering, not starting or disqualification from the race = 4 points

Half the penalty for not entering a half race, and half the reward for winning.

That actually makes a lot more sense. This whole time I was looking at increasing the amount of points scored for these races! :P Thank you dr-baker, I will amend the standings to reflect this (it shouldn't change too much, hopefully).

No problem! It actually took me this long to realise this myself! (I first looked at this results around 36 hours ago...)

1977

Niki Lauda, fed up with his treatment at Ferrari since his near-fatal accident the year before, quit the team after the United States GP. He had a rather healthy 8-point lead over Scheckter, so it looked like he might take the title so long as Scheckter in the unreliable Wolf retired from the final two rounds or at the very least not finish on the podium. Scheckter immediately responded to the challenge with a win at Mosport. This meant all he had to do to take the title was complete the first 19 laps of the Japanese GP, he did and gave Wolf their only title in their first season. Ferrari made it three Constructers' titles in a row. This year also had another Guy Ligier moment with Hans Binder 6th in the standings after Monaco. Unfortunetely he was then replaced at Surtees by Larry Perkins. :(

Thought Reutemann might have had a chance of sneaking 1978 with Lotus' troubles at the end of the year but to be only 4 points of Andretti when the Lotus was such a dominant car was very impressive. Incidentally any of the next 6 years could have a champion change as they were all very close seasons.

And Prost will definitely win 1988 as he only retired twice, every other race he was 1st or 2nd.

Called 1977 right though! :)

Going into the final round it was a three-way battle between Scheckter, Villeneuve and Jones. The two Ferrari drivers had been equal on points for most of the season but with a win at the Glen Villeneuve won the championship he deserved. Just as in reality the championship contenders seemed to change during the season. From Laffite who then suffered a string of retirements from South Africa to Spain, to Depailler until his hang-gliding accident, to Reutemann until his string of retirements from Germany onwards and finally Jones, who ultimately lost out in the end.

Reutemann didn't have much to worry about as he dropped down the order at Las Vegas. As long as he brought the car home with Piquet 2nd or lower he would be champion and when the chequered flag fell he was the first Argentine champion since the great Fangio in 1957. Interestingly, the result of this championship makes it ten different champions in ten consecutive seasons (Fittipaldi, Stewart, Regazzoni, Lauda, Hunt, Scheckter, Andretti, Villeneuve, Jones and now Reutemann).

Reckon John Watson has a good chance of stealing 1982 as Rosberg was DQ'd in Brazil. They both were out of Imola so that race counts for not very much!

Also Prost for 1983 has less retirements than Piquet. At this rate I think Piquet might win ONLY 1987 unless he somehow steals 1986 or even 1990 (both unlikely though).

Despite being disqualified from Brazil and missing Imola, Keke Rosberg still became Finland's first World Champion, thanks mainly to finishing all of the last six races (including two podiums and a race win). His retirements came late enough in races for him to come away with 4 or 5 points. Prost had a more realistic shot at the title here than in reality when he shared 2nd place with Watson going into the final round just 2 points behind Rosberg. Alboreto could have been a big upset and even led the championship after Imola (although given the circumstances it's not that much of a surprise). Alas for Michele he retired from five races, some of them early on, and the Tyrrell just wasn't quick enough to consistently challenge for podiums. Nevertheless he was often in the top three of the Drivers' Championship throughout the year. McLaren claimed their first Constructors' title in eight years.

1983

Piquet loses another of his real-world championships, this time to Alain Prost, although with Piquet needing to win after Prost's retirement in Kyalami he more than likely would not have slowed down towards the end and probably would have won the championship on countback under this system. Only 2 points separate the top three of the Constructors' Championship with Brabham coming from 3rd to snatch it from their rivals. Arrows managed to get at least one car to finish every Grand Prix, resulting in them taking a respectable 5th place (with the same points as Williams), with Marc Surer 7th in the drivers' standings.

Would Piquet have been 1983 champion if he hadn't slowed down at the end at Kyalami?

I didn't think of that actually, well spotted! He would have had to win to take the championship so he more than likely would have gone for the win under those circumstances and taken the championship by having more 2nd places than Prost.

1984

Lauda became the first double World Champion in over a decade. Williams had a disastrous season, despite winning a race, which saw them beaten by the likes of Alfa Romeo and Toleman. In the cases of Osella and ATS I didn't count Gartner and Berger's results for the same reason they weren't counted in the real '84 season. So for example at Imola Osella would have scored 8 points for Ghinzani's DNQ instead of 4 for Gartner completing 75% distance.

Drivers' Championship:

1. Niki Lauda 44.5 pts.
