Two more years for your enjoyment. :)

1986

Nelson Piquet finally won the title after a very close fought season between himself, Prost and Mansell. Mansell's Adelaide woes meant that even if Prost won, Piquet could still win by finishing 2nd, so Williams' decision to bring him in for tyres wasn't such a big risk in this version of events. Elsewhere in the field René Arnoux starts his Ligier career by finishing 5th in the standings and Jonathan Palmer achieves 10th driving for Zakspeed! On a side note I didn't take Rothengatter's results into account when calculating Zakspeed's points as I think he was ineligible for points, similar to Berger and Gartner in 1984 (unless there's somebody in the audience who can prove otherwise). :)

Drivers' Championship:

1. Nelson Piquet 48 pts.

1987

This year saw more giant-killing performances by a reject driver. This time it was Pascal Fabre who was in a battle for 6th in the championship with Jonathan Palmer and even kept AGS ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship! Unfortunately for Pascal Osella and Larrousse were entering second cars from Monza onwards, meaning less guaranteed grid spots. He struggled to qualify for the next few races and was sacked after Mexico. Going into the final race Senna was the only man who could stop Piquet from winning back-to-back titles. Piquet only needed to make it past half-distance to win the title and did so. To rub salt in the wound for Ayrton, he was disqualified after a fine drive to 2nd for illegal brake ducts. In the Jim Clark and Colin Chapman Trophies (yes I did those too!) the only change is March finishing ahead of AGS.

1986 - Piquet got his revenge on Prost for 1983.

Also Jonathan Palmer ahead of both Ferraris and both Benettons in 1987 - cool!

1988

Alain Prost became the first triple World Champion since Jackie Stewart. Senna started the season on the back foot with a disqualification and was behind Prost in the championship all season, with the exception of Monza where they were equal in points but with Senna ahead on race wins. Further down the field Ferrari only took 2nd in the Constructors' Championship thanks to Benetton's disqualification at Spa and Lola beat Williams despite not getting a single top six finish.

Not the slightest bit surprised to see Prost 1988 champion but I am surprised at Gugelmin being ahead of Capelli when it was Capelli grabbing all the attention in the later part of the year!

1989

Prost is now a four-time World Champion, joining an exclusive club that includes Juan Manuel Fangio, Graham Hill and Jack Brabham. This is however only the first time he successfully defended a title. Senna was once again behind, suffering more retirements including four straight DNFs which led to Patrese overtaking him for 2nd in the Championship after Silverstone. Elsewhere Jonathan Palmer and Eddie Cheever finished in the top ten in what was the final year for both of them, joined by the likes of Gugelmin for the second year running and de Cesaris, who led Dallara in a battle for 3rd in the Constructors' Championship in the first third of the season.

1990

Senna, after being runner-up for three consecutive years, has finally won the Championship, beating his arch-rival Prost, somewhat less controversially (but not without it altoghether ;)), as his first corner move on Prost at Suzuka didn't change things much with Senna already having a decent lead over the Ferrari driver. Nicola Larini finished in the top ten, despite this being part of Ligier's most uncompetitive period. Speaking of Ligier they finished 6th in the Constructors' Championship. :)

1992

For this year I got rid of the "only the highest placed car can score WCC points" rule in favour of the current "both cars score WCC points" system because this was the year that two-car teams became universal and there was no way of making the current system work for previous years starting in 1979 (when this system was really introduced) because there were some teams who entered one car in each race, giving them an unfair advantage for the Constructors' Championship and on some occasions three cars were entered by a single team, (for example Renault at the 1985 German GP) which would actually have put them at a disadvantage. Some of you may ask "well, why didn't you just keep the old system?" I had considered that, but looking at the near-bulletproof reliability of contemporary F1, there would be a lot of teams tied for some position in the Championship and it would have gotten ridiculous. For example last year McLaren, Sauber, Toro Rosso, Williams and Marussia would all have been tied for 5th in the Constructors' Championship. So now you can hopefully see why I had to change things. Anyway back to 1992! Mansell finally won the title many felt he deserved. Introducing the current system had some...interesting results. They are too many to list, but let's just say that Scuderia Italia were even more foolish to switch to Lola in this universe. ;)

Alain Prost retires after winning a record-equalling fifth world title, ten years after his first. Last year it was Dallara, this year it's Larrousse who finish a creditable 4th in the Constructors' Championship, after a hard-fought battle involving six other teams. Derek Warwick, in his comeback season, finished 6th in the Drivers' Championship that also included the likes of Karl Wendlinger and Érik Comas in the top ten and Minardi scored the same number of points as Ferrari! :D

1994

One of the most controversial seasons in the history of the sport. The lack of consistency in the field at the start of the season was such that after Monaco Schumacher's closest championship rivals were Martin Brundle in the McLaren that could go off at any minute, Olivier Panis in the slow but reliable Ligier and Johnny Herbert in the the dying Lotus team. Of course Schumacher was then disqualified from Silverstone and Spa, and banned from participating at Monza and Estoril, meaning that when he made his return at Jerez Schumi was 14 points down on Hill. Hill became the first second-generation champion at Suzuka meaning Adelaide wasn't such a big climax. Interestingly, Williams came within 1 point of their actual 1994 points haul. Ligier came close to taking 3rd in the Constructors' Championship only to be beaten by Ferrari in the final round. Panis however, still kept 3rd in the Drivers' Championship. Minardi once again had an impressive season and came within 2 points of McLaren in 6th with Martini 7th in the Drivers' Championship. Sauber had a disastrous season with an unreliable car and one of their drivers nearly getting killed at Monaco. Ultimately they finished 13th, only beating newcomers Pacific. This season also had two sons and one nephew of World Champions in the top ten: Hill champion, Fittipaldi 5th and F1 reject David Brabham in 10th. :D

This has to be amongst the best alternative season results there are! I love that Ligier are fourth, Minardi in sixth and Simtek beat Sauber!

By the way, do you have the results for all 40-odd drivers?

Would Ligier have finished 3rd if Panis hadn't been DQ'd from Portugal (I think it was that race)?

Yes, even if he retired on the first lap at Estoril Ligier would've been 3rd.

Slight correction here, Christian Fittipaldi is the son of Wilson Fittipaldi, not Emerson, so he's a World Champion's nephew ;)

Either way, great job on the championship :)

Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger were not last? :) I guess it's because they were able to complete more than 25% of a race each?

Considering maximum is 128 (16*8), Ratzenberger got -4 for finishing in Aida.

Senna got -4 points for driving 75% in Interlagos and -1 point for starting in Aida and Imola.

I used negative points because here less points is better.

1995

Michael Schumacher became the first German World Champion, breaking Williams' streak of three consecutive titles in the process. Benetton and Williams had a tough time catching up in the Constructors' Championship after the events of Brazil with Benetton not taking the lead from Ferrari until Belgium. Jordan and Sauber made up for their 1994 performances with 4th and 5th. McLaren on the other hand, had a disastrous season that saw them beaten by Minardi in the points.

Drivers' Championship:

1996

Jacques Villeneuve, another son of a World Champion, became a champion himself, also becoming the first rookie World Champion in the process. Villeneuve had a consistent season, taking the title despite having only 4 wins to Hill's 8. From this season on I will be posting the full Drivers' Championship table because there aren't many driver changes from here onwards, resulting in every season having less than 30 drivers.

1997

Villeneuve continued his 100% record of championships thanks to the champion-elect being disqualified for his actions at Jerez. When Schumacher crashed into Villeneuve he'd already won when the race started, meaning the FIA stripped him of the World Championship and not just 2nd place, handing it to his rival. Panis might well have been a title contender as his crash in Canada put him 2nd in the standings (though some might now say that he did it deliberately to bring out the red flag). :P Jerez was also the set-up for an exciting finale in the Constructors' Championship with just 1 point separating Ferrari, Benetton and Williams. Williams and Benetton finished equal on points (thanks to Villeneuve letting the McLarens past), but Williams won on countback. Finally, here's a statistic for the Alex Wurz Conspiracy: When Wurz gave the Benetton seat back to Berger at the 10th race of the season Berger had 49 points.

Drivers' Championship:

1. Jacques Villeneuve 60 pts.

1999

Eddie Irvine has become Ferrari's first World Champion since Gilles Villeneuve in 1979. Minardi have returned to their early '90s ways by equalling Williams in the points with Gené in the top ten.

Drivers' Championship:

1. Eddie Irvine 46 pts.

10. Arrows 165 pts.
11. BAR-Supertec 166 pts.

2000

Michael Schumacher finally won his second title after the controversy of 1997 in a season that was much closer than in reality, going down to the final round in Malaysia. Behind the top teams BAR had a massive improvement over 1999 with 3rd and Ricardo Zonta even finished in the top ten. More welcome however, is Minardi only 2 points off in 4th with Gastón Mazzacane 7th in the Drivers' standings. :D Benetton looked like a shoe-in for 3rd but suffered from a nasty combination of bad luck and unreliability in the second half of the season. Jordan also had a fall from grace after an excellent 1999 campaign to finish only 9th.

Well, the points system means that you get as many points for finishing fourth as you do for finishing bog last, just as long as you finish :P So expect Max Chilton to do very well in 2013 :P

2001

Schumacher is now a triple World Champion. Benetton did quite well considering that this was easily their worst season. Prost also did well, scoring the same number of points as Benetton, but it didn't save them from bankruptcy. Sauber, despite this being the year they became exciting, still only finished 8th. In the Drivers' Championship Jean Alesi finished an excellent 5th in what turned out to be his last season and Verstappen also did well, coming 6th.

I was actually predicting Raikkonen as 2003 champion as IIRC he had less retirements than Schumi but they were early in races like Spain.

Actaully Schumi had only 1 DNF in all of 2003. Raikkonen had 3.

I suppose BAR's disqualification and subsequent 2-race ban led to their poor performance here. But even so, second to 10th and last in the space of just one year is pretty poor by anybody's standards. And Minardi beating both Red Bull and BAR, both of whom would go on to win championships (the latter as Brawn and perhaps as Mercedes) = Wow!
