Women's GT World Championship 2014 - Season over!

Post by Turbogirl »

Do you still remember Formula Woman? If the answer is NO, consider yourself very lucky, because this isn’t anything like it. The Women’s GT World Championship is (as the name indicates) a fictional racing series for non-fictional woman drivers only. 14 factory teams will battle for the title in 20 races all over the world.

If you’re interested in joining this series, here is what you’ll have to do:

IMPORTANT: Teams already taken by players are marked RED.

Choose your Team

You cannot enter your own fictional team here, since I use real-life stats to create results. All teams are factory teams. All the cars are almost on the same level due to Balance of Performance. So there is no actual risk of becoming a constant backmarker, just because you chose Toyota (or whomever).

Here is the list of all available factory teams (and the cars they field) for the first season:

Aston Martin Racing (DBR9)
Audi Motorsport (R8 LMS Ultra)
BMW Motorsport (Z4 GT)
Chevrolet (Corvette C6 Z06)
Scuderia Ferrari (Ferrari 458 GT)
Ford (Matech Ford GT)
Honda (HSV-010 GT)
Jaguar Racing (XK-R)
Scuderia Lamborghini (Murcielago LP670 R-GT)
Scuderia Maserati (MC-12)
Mercedes-Benz (SLS AMG GT)
Nissan (GT-R)
Porsche (911 GT)
Toyota (Supra HV-R)
Lotus (Evora GTE*)

* In this game we'll pretend, that Lotus built the engine for the Evora GTE themselves, although they didn't in real life.

After you picked your favorite team, name your Team Principal. That will be your alias for this series. You may choose a real or fictional person. Real people have to be alive and well in 2014 – so no holograms, no zombies raised by black magic and no Lella Lombardi or Maria de Villota.
If it’s at all possible, please make your character female. This is not mandatory, but it would feel somewhat more fitting. Of course, if you act as one of your all-time favorite male characters (you know, the one you play in all the games on this site)... well, fine by me.

Choose your Technical Director

Somebody has to be in charge of the technical staff. Although the entered cars may not be changed, upgraded or modified in any way during the season, they still need to be repaired sometimes. The capability of your Technical Director also plays an important role on the performance of your cars. So, if your team happens to be dead last in the races, you may consider sacking some other people too (and not just your drivers, which seems to be the default solution for so many players on this site).

Lastly, choose 2 Race Engineers

Women's GT World Championship - Game Mechanics 1

Post by Turbogirl »

Oh wow, so many entries on the first day! Never expected that to happen. Thank you very much. :D

I will collect all your entries in a seperate post and help new players figure out, who's already been taken by marking them RED.

First, as promised, here’s my second post with the Race Calendar and several important Game Mechanics. Let me announce to you, who is in charge of this series:

The WDA (Women Drivers Association) was founded by Michele Mouton, Lyn St.James and Claire Williams. Since the re-appearance of female test drivers in Formula 1, several plans had emerged on how to »even the odds« a little bit more. After all, its no real secret, that Team Principals in general (even the female ones) usually hire men, just because they’re more experienced, faster or can bring more sponsor money. This topic isn’t all that new and could fill a whole book on its own.
Since money couldn’t be the sole solution, Mouton, St.James and Williams soon came up with the idea to found a whole new racing series just for female drivers. Granted, even this idea wasn’t that new at all – Niki Lauda talks about this since the mid-nineties. Unfortunately, a Formula Female couldn’t be realized as planned, because the costs would have been astronomical (and because it already exists on this forum).
14 big car manufacturers were interested, mainly because of the publicity, and were even more pleased, when they heard, that they only needed to dust off some more or less »old GT-cars«. With a strict Balance of Performance, which should guarantee exciting and challenging races, the oldies-but-goldies were about to let out a roar once again.
Of course, Mister Ecclestone wasted no time and stepped on the mat as soon as the word »Women« fell to incorporate the Women’s GT World Championship into the fringe events of Formula 1. He was seemingly disappointed when Mouton and St.James voted against it (how could Claire Williams have said no? She needs to keep her father’s team running in F1, so don’t judge her). Both claimed, that the Tilke-Dromes weren’t suited for real racing and building up the experience some female drivers truely lacked. Also, who wants to race in front of a group of five or six sheikhs, because no one else can afford the tickets?
Bernie swore to »keep a close look at this series«, whatever he meant by that and smirked a bit, when he figured out, that with Sepang at least one of his Tilke-Dromes was on board. There are a few ladies from Malaysia hoping to get a driver’s seat, so what to do about it?

Now, without further delay, here’s the Race Calendar of Season 1:

Pre-Season Test Session – Belgium (Zolder)

Round 01 – Australia (Adelaide Street Circuit)
Round 02 – China (Zhuhai)
Round 03 – Malaysia (Sepang International Circuit)
Round 04 – Japan (Suzuka International Race Course)
Round 05 – Canada (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve)
Round 06 – USA (Sebring International Raceway)
Round 07 – Brazil (Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace (Interlagos))
Round 08 – Argentina (Potrero de los Funes, San Luis)
Round 09 – Portugal (Autodromo Internacional do Algarve)
Round 10 – Spain (Autodromo Nacional Sitges-Terramar)

Mid Season Test Session – France (Le Castellet)

Round 11 – France (Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours)
Round 12 – Great Britain (Silverstone Circuit)
Round 13 – Sweden (Scandinavian Raceway)
Round 14 – Netherlands (Circuit Park Zandvoort)
Round 15 – Belgium (Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps)
Round 16 – Germany (Nürburgring)
Round 17 – Austria (Red-Bull-Ring)
Round 18 – Czech Republic (Masaryk Circuit)
Round 19 – Hungary (Hungaroring)
Round 20 – Italy (Autodromo Nazionale Monza)

The Points System

1st place – 50 points
2nd place – 40 points
3rd place – 35 Points
4th place – 30 Points
5th place – 26 Points
6th place – 22 Points
7th place – 18 Points
8th place – 15 Points
9th place – 12 Points
10th place – 9 Points
11th place – 7 Points
12th place – 5 Points
13th place – 3 Points
14th place – 1 point

Quite unusual, isn’t it? Well, it’s not too bad to have a rewarding points system, but all the tests I ran beforehand indicated, that this would actually create a much closer outcome in the championship standings than the current F1-system.

IMPORTANT GAME MECHANICS

Car Numbers

In the first season numbers will be given by date of entry. Whoever comes first, recieves the numbers 0 / 2 etc. Since there isn’t a drivers champion yet, number 1 remains unused. Number 13 is also assigned, cause I was born on a 13th and therefore don’t consider it bad luck.
After the first season re-entering teams will recieve car numbers according to their final standing in the last championship.

Pre-Qualification

The maximum size of each grid is 28 cars or 14 teams. Since you can only choose between 14 teams right now, a pre-qualification won’t be necessary.

Qualification

A qualifying session is held before the race. All drivers with a lap time outside 105 % of the pole-position are not qualified and may not enter the race.

Drivers – Team Order

After you’ve chosen your drivers from the list, you can set them to First and Second Driver. Internally this means, when they happen to finish 1-2 in a race, your Second Driver has to let your First Driver pass, if she’s in front at that time. Yes, this is Team Order and it’s totally legal in this game, albeit not everyone considers it fair.
If you don’t like Team Order, simply say so in your post and both of your drivers will get the code »X«, which means, you treat them both equally.

Drivers – Level of Aggressiveness (LoA)

Your drivers can be set in 3 different levels: Aggressive (AGG), Moderate (MOD) and Defensive (DEF). If you don’t do so, they’ll always race at Moderate.

Aggressive (AGG) – Your driver will attack wherever possible and go to her and the cars limit in each race. Chance of driver errors and accidents is at maximum.

Moderate (MOD) – The default setting. Your driver will attack and defend if necessary. She will rarely go to her or the cars limit. Chance of driver errors and accidents is at normal.

Defensive (DEF) – Your driver will never attack on her own and only defend her current position. She’ll never go to her or the cars limit. Chance of driver errors or accidents is at zero.

Unlike old PC games, you don’t need to change the LoA before each race. Most of the time Moderate (MOD) will work perfectly for you. This also doesn’t mean, that the settings are to be taken literally. Even if you set one driver to DEF, she will attack the car in front of her, if she really really gets the chance to do it safely.

I will also post your driver settings on the entry-page (I will soon create), so that you can easily find and change them. The code I’ll use looks either like this:

Car #13: Rahel Frey (1 / AGG)
Car #14: Natacha Gachnang (2 / MOD)

This means, that your drivers are set at First and Second Driver. Rahel is set a Aggressive (AGG) and Natacha at Moderate (MOD).

Or like this:

Car #13: Rahel Frey (X / AGG)
Car #14: Natacha Gachnang (X / MOD)

Same as the first example, only this time »X« indicates, that both drivers are treated equally by their teams.

Roleplaying (this is IMPORTANT! - at least to everyone, who has never played any RPG before)

As I already mentioned, I am a GM (Games Mistress, not General Motors  ) for pen and paper RPGs for almost twelve years now. Logically I've included many RPG-elements into this game as well. That means, you can talk to everyone in your team and they'll give you feedback - or rather I will, playing the role of every person you as the Team Principal talk to.
Why? Simple, because this isn't one of those games, where you're left in the dark after the Championship has begun. When your team isn't competitive or you have trouble with your tyres, drivers, suppliers, then just ask someone in your team for advice - usually the Technical Director, since he / she is responsible for the team as a whole.
I will certainly not flat-out tell you, what exactly is wrong, cause that would be god-moding. But if you ask your Technical Director for advice, he / she will give you possible choices from which you can pick. You can also talk to suppliers, superiors (the CEO of Ford, for example) and external experts, if you want to.

You need to name a Team Principal. Also, andrew already hired Chris Dyer as one of his race engineers for Aston Martin. Please pick again.

I don't know who the engineers are, to be honest so can you please randomly assign some of them to me?

I can certainly do that for you. How about Humphrey Corbett for Visser and Andrea Stella for van der Lof? If you're curious, you'll find a nice article about Corbett on grandprix.com. Andrea Stella on the other hand is Fernando Alonso's current race engineer at Ferrari. He's got a bit of spare-time, before F1 starts again. ;)

Just out of interest, what are you using to simulate your races?

Following closely? Just like Bernie wanted to? :) Since I have a long history as a GM (games master or "mistress" in my case) in Pen-and-Paper-RPGs, I invented a D20-based system (which also uses other different dices as well) to create all the results. Took me a whole year to perfect it, but I found it more to my liking than xkoranate or any of the regular PC manager games (if there's even one out there I could have used for this).

Well, sure I'll play Bernie ;) But turns out my curiosity got the better of me and I've edited my post to sign up (unless you want me to play some supremo, that would be fun!)

Like you I found xkoranate and PC manager games too limiting, so I created an Excel sheet to simulate races. I used to play/GM quite a few RPGs also, mostly pen and paper but also a few play by forum online ones. Some of them got seriously in-depth and intense haha.

No, please don't play Bernie! You're too good for that role.
I randomly assigned two race engineers to your team, too. John McGill for Tander, and Nina Oswald just seemed to be the perfect fit here, since she is an actual race engineer at Audi (DTM, Miguel Molina). After Molina's first pole in 2012 she had to turn up on the track in high heels!

There's a BMW works team available? I'm so in :D

Team: BMW Team Australia (To fit with the naming protocol of most BMW Touring Car teams :P )
Team Principal: Daniel "Mad Uncle" Melrose
Technical Director: Willi Rampf
Tyres: Michelin
Driver #1: Chelsea Angelo (Australian Formula Ford/F3 driver)
Driver #2: Renee Gracie (Australian Carrera Cup driver)
Race Engineer Driver #1: John McGill
Race Engineer Driver #2: Jeremy Moore (Craig Lowndes' race engineer in V8 Supercars)

The drivers and second race engineer are under the assumption that as long as they fit the rules, they don't have to be from the list. If it's not above board, I'll fix it up.

Thanks Turbo!

I'm interested in learning more about your D20 system and possibly incorporating it into my NewF1 series (I'd love to introduce an aggression setting at some point). Could you PM me so we can discuss? You just have to click the little envelope under my username - I'd PM you but I don't think you've set an email address on your profile.

Oh and Wizzie, Leanne Tander has already been tweeting that BMW are going DOWN.

I'm deeply sorry. I seem to have assigned John McGill to Audi at the same moment you posted your entry. May I trouble you to pick again, please?

The rest of your entry is totally okay however. I'm still somewhat surprised, both Angelo and Gracie went completely under my radar. Jeromy Moore is a quite nice catch, if I may say that. Let's see, how a man called the "Gandhi of V8 Supercars" manages, when he's paired with a young gal instead of Lowndes. Well, Gracie already drove a 997 Carrera, and that's always a good start.

I know, but we're also pretending that Coventry is still around and producing engines. ;)

Only problem is: You must enter as one of the available factory teams. Honda, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Lamborghini are still free. Besides that, your entry is perfectly legitimate.

Geez, seems like you're all out to grab the title right from the beginning, huh? ;) I like that. Alright, since I found enough stats for Lacroix and Triple Eight to work with, you may have him. Race engineer for Angelo: Ludo Lacroix it is.

And there I thought, I shouldn't include more NHRA drivers, cause no one would know or even pick them. How wrong one can be. Okay, your entry is registered for now, but you forgot to name a Technical Director. Could you please pick one from the list above? And Shirley Muldowney is 74. That's a tad bit too old, since this series is taking place in 2014. I think, you should give the younger generation a chance.

Women's GT World Championship - Game Mechanics 2

Post by Turbogirl »

Again, a big Thank You to all who signed up! It is quite overwhelming to experience so much positive feedback, even though this is my very first attempt and it’s not even a F1-related series.

This is also as good a time as any to give you some final informations about Game Mechanics.

Races – Regulations

No points are awarded for fastest lap or pole position. Points are awarded to those, who finish at least 90 % of the race distance. Teams can make as many pitstops as they think will be necessary (the race engineers you hired will do that automatically). Unlike other GT-series, drivers don’t have to make pitstops at all. I’m also not working with Success Ballast. Makes racing a bit too artificial, in my opinion.

Races – Presentation Format

I plan on posting a race every two days, sometimes I will need at least three to four days, depending on how many of you want to make changes in their team structure.

I won’t be crowning a reject of the race all the time, only when a driver or a team does something incredibly stupid. I know, announcing a ROTR is common here, but I really don’t consider finishing dead last in a race as utterly rejectful. Everyone has a bad day sooner or later. But that shouldn’t stop you from announcing a ROTR each time you feel like it!

Weather Conditions (now here’s something to worry about, though)

There are 6 different in-game weather conditions:

dry, warm (sunny or cloudy)
dry, cold (sunny or cloudy)
rainy, warm
rainy, cold
heavy rain, warm
heavy rain, cold

(snow and heavy snow would’ve also been pretty interesting, but I think your technical staff and drivers will have their hands full even without it  )

All of these play a prominent role on performance. Technical directors and race engineers automatically react to a certain situation, so you don’t need to change the set-up before every single qualifying or race. But, of course, they can screw it up sometimes – that’s why I included those guys and gals in the first place. Qualifying was dry but cloudy, so they might go with a set-up for mixed or even wet race conditions. Unfortunately, the weather gets better on the race day, and your drivers have a huge disadvantage with their wet set-up. Williams Renault produced a bummer like this in Spain 1996 and also Monaco 1997.

Sometimes a weather condition, let’s say »dry, warm, cloudy«, even changes during a race (yes, it can do that in my game) to »heavy rain, warm«. Malaysia in the springtime is a perfect candidate for this – a nice monsun is about the only thing that can spice up this track, though. So, prepare yourself for races, where everything seems to work against you – even the weather gods.

Firing and hiring staff and drivers

There is no real rule for this. Fire whoever you like whenever you like. Of course, new staff members and drivers will need time (or a mid-season test session – hint, hint) to get into their new job.

If you sack someone during the season, but realize later that he / she wasn’t as bad as you thought and try to re-hire said person, there is at least a 50 % chance, he / she denies that offer, because he / she was fired in the first place. I usually decide this by throwing a six-sided dice.

If the person you fired and then try to re-hire is already under contract in another team, you have no chance of getting him / her back until he / she gets fired from the new team as well. And then there’s still a 50 % chance he / she bears a grudge on you.

Changing the tyre supplier

It's also possible to change the tyre supplier, but only twice per season. When you change your tyre supplier, the new contract takes 1 race to become effective! When you make a new contract with Tyre Supplier X after Round 4, for example, he'll deliver the new tyres from Round 6 on, because he needs this time to produce all this new rubber you ordered.

Well to be fair, you couldn't have known there was an NHRA license holder on these forums. No love for "Cha-Cha" eh? :P Fair enough, we stay in the straight line ranks and choose Melanie Troxel, who should be able to bring In-N-Out Burger Sponsorship with her. :D As for a technical Director my High School idol, Ross Brawn please.

Yes, your entry is perfect. :) Just scroll up a bit and you'll find it on the entry list I've created.

No love for "Cha-Cha" eh? :P Fair enough, we stay in the straight line ranks and choose Melanie Troxel, who should be able to bring In-N-Out Burger Sponsorship with her. :D As for a technical Director my High School idol, Ross Brawn please.

You drive dragsters yourself? Wow, impressive. Ross Brawn and Melanie Troxel it is. But may I ask one thing: If you go for NHRA ladies, why didn't you want to hire one of the Force-sisters? Both Ashley and Courtney happen to be on my list.

Oh, fun fact, by the way: I've been planning and working on this series for almost 2 years now, right after dinizintheoven came out with his WEC. Both Troxel and Enders were on my list of available drivers right from the very first day, because I always wanted to include at least two ladies from every series in existence. But then the Force-sisters had their big reality-TV-show and I figured: They're pretty successful NHRA-Drivers as well and might be known to more people outside the US than Troxel or Enders, thus enhancing the chance of getting hired by a curious player. And now look, who's really standing on the sideline.

I do indeed. My car is my avatar. Its a sort of Altered/Funny Car hybrid. Fun? absolutely. Impressive? Let's not go crazy :P

As for the Force sisters, honestly, I don't much care for them. They had too much handed to them in my opinion. I don't much care for the old man anymore, and I used to be a big fan. They're just, I dunno, too commercial. And while your right, many more people would know them, to me that's a great reason to NOT pick them. Give some one else some dap. I used to not care for Troxel, but she's paid her dues and will race pretty much anything. I've seen her run TF, FC, AA/FC, PM, Outlaw PM, S/C and S/G. And I just like Erica :D .

But the fact that you had both of them on your list shows (as if proof was needed) what a well researched series this is. I for one am quite looking forward to it. Well done!

Women's GT World Championship - Entries close on friday

Post by Turbogirl »

Alright, just as a quick reminder: entries close this friday 24th, 12 pm CET!

If you want to join in, this is your very last chance to send in a complete and correct entry. Only 1 team is still available: Honda with the HSV-010 GT. Just pick staff and drivers not marked in RED and you're ready to go!

The teams will head off to Zolder, Belgium on sunday for the pre-season tests, so stay tuned, everybody!
