For some reason, whenever I try to switch from the default 'posts' choice in this option to 'topics', it ignores that and switches 'Search subforums' instead.

Hmm. I will need to look at the code for this sometime. I'm not an expert with the way phpbb is coded, so it might take a little digging in a fresh install before I fix it.
