Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Belgium

Post by Londoner »

1. Felipe Massa - Salvaged an awful weekend for him and Williams with a stealth drive into the points.

2. Jolyon Palmer - Probably the first weekend this year that he's actually looked like he belongs in F1. More of this please.

1. Felipe Massa: I didn't expect Williams to even come close to the points after qualifying.
2. Nico Hülkenberg: Sixth place was the maximum result for Renault, I didn't think they would place that high.

Massa - Dug a result out of a weekend that was looking really poor.

Grosjean - Drove a solid race to make the most out other drivers' misfortune to pick up useful points for Haas.

1. Ricciardo; no way on earth would I have thought a Red Bull would be on the podium here without at least two of the Mercs and Ferraris retiring. Plus he actually pulled away from the two Finns at the end.

2. Massa; out in Q1 to good points.

IIDoTR:
1. Ricciardo: drove cleverly and was rewarded with a podium for Red Bull on a power circuit, which by rights they should struggle at.
2. Massa: Did a good job salvaging points for Williams, though this shouldn't have been as improbable as it seemed after qualifying in the first place, which is telling...
HM:
Hulkenburg: Another strong race, demolishing Palmer from a similar grid slot.
Sainz: Drove a clean race thankfully, and hence scored a stealthy single point.
Alonso's start: three places in as many corners is pretty good, not to mention with a Honda engine which doesn't like flat-out corners seemingly.

Ricciardo - The driver made the difference, I think.
Ocon - Very impressive.

1. Ricciardo: stayed out of trouble and took the advantage of both Finns misfortunes.

2. Ocon: the "number 2 guy" (based on his GP3 results) is really getting to Perez a lot.

1. Ricciardo - 3rd at a power circuit shouldn't be possible in this year's Red Bull.

2. Massa - no idea how he get P8 but there he is.

1. Both Williams drivers - Yeah, Massa scored points, but Stroll wasn't too far away from joining him.

2. Palmer - As stated in the OP. He's actually been a match for Hulkenberg this weekend and has mainly been let down by the grid penalty. On the Sunday Hulkenberg looked to be doing better as usual, but it doesn't feel as clear cut this time around.

And for the IIDOTR award, we have two front-runners. Felipe Massa takes it, after he turned a Q1 exit into a solid eighth place. Really good job that I don't think anyone really expected him or Williams to achieve this weekend.

1. Felipe Massa 79
2. Daniel Ricciardo 62

3. Romain Grosjean 26
4. Esteban Ocon 18
5. Jolyon Palmer 12
6. Nico Hulkenberg 6
7. Lance Stroll 5

Daniel Ricciardo equally impressed with his and Red Bull's unexpected pace. He brought home a third place that was well deserved, and had the same, if not faster, speed than his rivals at Mercedes and Ferrari. Good job.
