1st Palmer - On one hand with all the carnage and a relatively competitive car, you had to say that he always had a chance at decent points today. On the other hand, even when there's been a chance for points, Palmer's generally not taken it, hence why he's likely not going to be in F1 beyond the end of the season. But today he kept his head and drove a good race to pick his best result and some deserved points and something of a nice ending to what's likely to be an ultimately forgettable F1 career. Well done Jolyon.

2nd Hamilton's luck - Easy win when he was supposed to be doing damage control.

I'll go with those nominations - Palmer was under pressure for most of that race, but put in what has comfortably been his best performance this season and we saw some clever opportunistic driving with his pass on Bottas and his defence against Vandoorne.

As for Sainz, he took full advantage of the mistakes and misfortunes of others to maximise his points haul for the team - and perfect timing for him given the announcement that he'll be driving for Renault next year.

1. Palmer: I called it at the start of the race (or perhaps earlier I can't quite remember) that since his drive was under threat he would end up getting a good result. And what would you know, he's now a third of the way to unrejectification.

2. Sainz: A 4th place for Sainz is excellent for both him and Toro Rosso in the ever-tightening midfield battle for the constructors championship.

HMs to Vandoorne, Stroll and Hulkenberg, all for great drives and good results, bar Hulkenberg and Mercedes, for getting a double podium after struggling in Practice and Quali.

We live in interesting times, my friends. Jolyon Palmer finished 6th in a Formula 1 grand prix. He therefore rightly wins the IIDOTR outright, which is a special kind of award in itself. Only two more points under the old system and he will have grown out of rejecthood. I'm sure the forum would be sad to see him go under those circumstances, but it is just incredible to say I saw Palmer finish 6th. Good on the young lad. Carlos Sainz Jr. finished runner-up, with no competition against him in second place, for his impressive drive to 4th in a Toro Rosso. Both drivers did well under the circumstances where others faltered, and they deserved their great finishes. If only Hulkenberg's car hadn't given up
