Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Singapore
Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Singapore
1. Jolyon Palmer - Loses his race seat for 2018, responds with his best ever race in Formula One. Maybe teams need to fire drivers more often.
2. Lance Stroll - Had the measure of Massa all weekend long. He's stepping it up a gear.

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Singapore
1st Palmer - On one hand with all the carnage and a relatively competitive car, you had to say that he always had a chance at decent points today. On the other hand, even when there's been a chance for points, Palmer's generally not taken it, hence why he's likely not going to be in F1 beyond the end of the season. But today he kept his head and drove a good race to pick his best result and some deserved points and something of a nice ending to what's likely to be an ultimately forgettable F1 career. Well done Jolyon.
2nd Hamilton's luck - Easy win when he was supposed to be doing damage control.

1. Jolyon Palmer: He was under a lot of pressure with the recent rumors, but ended up having (easily) the best race of his career. Great job!
2. Carlos Sainz, Jr.: Fourth place was the absolute maximum, and even that was much more than anyone could have expected.

1 - Palmer - Next stop: unrejectification.
2 - Magnussen - The result wasn't that great but I liked his fighting spirit during the race. Was very active and racey so deserves some credit!

I'll go with those nominations - Palmer was under pressure for most of that race, but put in what has comfortably been his best performance this season and we saw some clever opportunistic driving with his pass on Bottas and his defence against Vandoorne.
As for Sainz, he took full advantage of the mistakes and misfortunes of others to maximise his points haul for the team - and perfect timing for him given the announcement that he'll be driving for Renault next year.

1. Carlos Sainz, Jr. - Making the best impression the weekend of his new contract, Carlos pulls off a flawless drive for fourth place. Enjoy that Renault drive, son, you've matched Verstappen's best STR result despite having a worse car.
2. Jolyon Palmer - He may have been comprehensively outpaced by Hülkenberg all race (as per), but he kept his cool on the road, made no mistakes and defended well. Easily his best drive so far, though in my view overshadowed by that of his future replacement.

1. Jolyon Palmer - Nice timing - the best race in his F1 career right after the announcement of his F1 career being over.
2. Carlos Sainz - It's unfair that he had to spend three years in a Toro Rosso.

In pretty much any other race, Vandoorne would have got my vote with ease.
Magnussen was a joy to watch today as well.

1. Palmer: I'm not sure how, but he was actually pretty good out there today, and that sixth was deserved. Interesting that it took being fired for 2018 to extract performance out f him, but oh well...
2. Sainz: very nearly on the podium in a Toro Rosso to score his best result ever, and on the wrong tyres, too!
HM:
Hulkenburg: Oh so nearly a first podium
Vandoorne: Best result ever, and he is looking better every race.
Stroll: He's becoming a bit of a wet weather specialist- if Williams make a higher downforce 2018 car, he could be one to watch...
Mercedes: They didn't look anywhere near capable of winning on Saturday.

1. Jolyon Palmer - Slow-lyon Palmer's pace has begun to grow-lyon Palmer.
2. Stoffel Vandoorne - definitely deserves some point on the nominations for his good performance today. Unfortunately overshadowed but no less deserving of a mention.
HM - Kevin Magnussen for his great moves all evening.

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Singapore
1. Palmer: I called it at the start of the race (or perhaps earlier I can't quite remember) that since his drive was under threat he would end up getting a good result. And what would you know, he's now a third of the way to unrejectification.
2. Sainz: A 4th place for Sainz is excellent for both him and Toro Rosso in the ever-tightening midfield battle for the constructors championship.
HMs to Vandoorne, Stroll and Hulkenberg, all for great drives and good results, bar Hulkenberg and Mercedes, for getting a double podium after struggling in Practice and Quali.

1. Pirelli - a wet race that wasn't mired by constant debate about whether the cars should be racing or not
2. Mercedes - I know part of the race was wet, but where did that pace come from

And the grand winner by almost unanimous decision is Jolyon Palmer! *Klaxons blare*
1. Jolyon Palmer 206
2. Carlos Sainz Jr. 96
3. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes' pace 16
4. Stoffel Vandoorne 14
5. Pirelli 10
6. Lance Stroll 8
7. Hamilton's luck 6
- Kevin Magnussen 6
We live in interesting times, my friends. Jolyon Palmer finished 6th in a Formula 1 grand prix. He therefore rightly wins the IIDOTR outright, which is a special kind of award in itself. Only two more points under the old system and he will have grown out of rejecthood. I'm sure the forum would be sad to see him go under those circumstances, but it is just incredible to say I saw Palmer finish 6th. Good on the young lad. Carlos Sainz Jr. finished runner-up, with no competition against him in second place, for his impressive drive to 4th in a Toro Rosso. Both drivers did well under the circumstances where others faltered, and they deserved their great finishes. If only Hulkenberg's car hadn't given up
