Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Abu Dhabi 2017

Post by Bobby Doorknobs »

We all have the procedure down by now, so let's hear some nominations!

1. Bottas, maybe?

2. Wehrlein? - He actually seemed able to do things with the Sauber for the first time in a while.

IIDoTR:
1. Wehrlein: Genuinely competed in the lower midfield despite his underpowered Sauber
2. Hulkenberg: Good qualifying and despite making a rather stupid error passing Perez, he recovered well to be best of the rest to secure 6th for Renault
HM:
Hartley: Faster and more consistent than Gasly in the race
Grosjean: Good progress to 11th
Bottas: Held off Hamilton in a straight fight

1. Nico Hulkenberg - saved some face for Renault, and embarrassed Toro Rosso by taking that 6th place in the constructors' at the last gasp. Good job to the guy, even after the penalty he kept his head and delivered for the team.
2. Valtteri Bottas - Kept his head and beat Lewis in a straight fight. More races like this next year, and we will hopefully see him mount a championship challenge.

Ten pints (and also ten points) go to Valtteri Bottas, just when he was being written off as a Kovalainen-esque subordinate to His Majesty Sir Lewis Of Stevenage, he comes within three laps of a Grand Slam (or so the Forix lap chart tells me), and would have got it if he hadn't pitted first. That's a fine way to help Finland celebrate a century of independence. The ten pints are to make up for the obvious lack of anything suitable for a Finn to drink in the celebratory bottle (notice Valtteri didn't drink it at all, he immediately went to spray his team on the ground below). SUOMI FINLAND PERKELE!

Six points (and half a Beck's) go to... Nico Hülkenberg, I suppose, for putting Renault only one place behind where they were supposed to be in the Constructors' Championship rather than two, despite his own and the team's best efforts to compromise that.
James Allen, on his favourite F1 engine of all time:
"...the Life W12, I can't describe the noise to you, but imagine filling your dustbin with nuts and bolts, and then throwing it down the stairs, it was something akin to that!"

1 - Bottas - Excellent recovery drive after recent struggles.
2 - Hülkenberg - It was dull race so have to nominate someone I guess.

1. Nico Hulkenberg - P6 for P6
2. Pascal Wehrlein - Mixed it in tail end of the midfield

1. Nico Hülkenberg: A great result, got Renault sixth in the constructors' championship.
2. Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean: Three points for both. They tried to make the race exciting with their battles with Massa and Stroll, respectively.

The results are in from the final race of the season, and here we are:

1. Nico Hulkenberg 58
2. Valtteri Bottas 52

3. Pascal Wehrlein 28
4. Fernando Alonso 3
- Romain Grosjean 3

Nico Hulkenberg wins the IIDOTR award, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas. The former had a good race, and even with his penalty finished a respectable 6th place, kept his head down and managed to get his team ahead of Toro Rosso at the very last gasp of the season. A good job under pressure. The latter won a race in a straight fight against his world champion teammate, and now has the momentum with which to go into 2018 fighting.
