Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Italy
Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Italy
1. Lance Stroll - A brilliant qualifying session, and one more precious point for Williams. Top job.
2. Sergey Sirotkin - Probably his best weekend in F1 to date, deserved a points finish...which he's now got thanks to the stewards disqualifying Grosjean.

Lance Stroll. Yes, I know this is going to be a popular opinion. But I think he deserves it mainly because, earlier in the season, I predicted (and probably wrote it here somewhere, if anyone cares to find it) that Williams wouldn't score another point for the rest of the season. (In fact, I think I said they were about as likely to do it as Caterham and Marussia used to be.) And yet, Williams' points total has just increased by 20% in one race, if you want to see it in government statistics terms.
But still... if only it could have been Sergey Sirotkin who'd done it instead. Nothing against Lance in that comment, but I can't remember (off the top of my head) the last time every driver in the championship scored points. Has it ever happened?
Bad luck to Kimi, as well. I think that was his last chance at a victory gone down the swanee.

It does seem as if Stroll is turning into a bit of a Monza specialist - now, it is true that this probably was the one circuit on the calendar where their weaknesses would be less critical, but it is still true that he took full advantage of the situation and dragged the car to a point. Sirotkin was perhaps a little hard done by there to end up just behind Stroll, but equally that was probably about as far as he could push the car this weekend.
I suppose that, for some balance, we do need another nominee, so to that end I might as well say Grosjean - as some said, he won the "B class" race and had a pretty tight scrap with the two Force India's. Although he didn't appear much on screen, he did what he'd failed to do earlier in the season and banked another solid result for the team - in fact, it's been enough for Haas to nose ahead of Renault in the constructors championship.
Martin Brundle, on watching a replay of Grosjean spinning:
"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

Re: Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Italy
I nominate Lance Stroll for making it to Q3 (which I thought would be impossible for Williams this season) and scoring a point (pretty unlikely too).

1. Williams - surprisingly competent, for once
2. Siroktin - Finally, points! (via a disqualification, but oh well )
HM:
Stroll - He really seems to like this track, doesn't he?
Raikkonen - One of his best races in ages

Stroll - good weekend. If anything like it happens again it will be worth another IIDOTR.

Williams win the Monza Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race, for their first really good race in a long time. They've had a really bad patch this year, but Lance Stroll scored himself a point at a track he seems to be particularly good at. And if that wasn't enough on its own to get them an award, Romain Grosjean's exclusion led Sergey Sirotkin to be promoted to 10th. Those are his first points in F1, and they get Williams nearly doubling their points total - a welcome feat. Good job everyone!
