Your Reject of the Race - Brazil

Post by Londoner »

1. Esteban Ocon - Monumentally daft move, not what we've come to expect from him at all.

2. McLaren - At this point, they'd honestly be better off closing down the F1 team and going all in for IndyCar.

1. Ocon: Really? He ultimately cost Verstappen the race in a boneheaded move.

2. McLaren: Anonymous throughout.

Max Verstappen - Am I the only one who thinks Max was partly to blame for the Ocon collision? He basically expected Ocon to disappear into thin air, he was only barely ahead and Ocon didn't exactly 'lunge' him like Brundle kept calling it. Is it not the lead car's responsibility to find a safe way past backmarkers? It ended up costing him a win.

Esteban Ocon - That said what on earth did Ocon have to gain for holding his line for that long as a backmarker?

I vote joint award for both.

1) Esteban Ocon: Got in the way of an interesting battle between Hamilton and Verstappen, costing us the result of a proper battle on the circuit.

2) McLaren: Nowhere to be seen by the end.

Well, I think it's pretty clear what most nominations are going to be for, so I guess that I will try and offer something different here...

Ericsson's car - he'd been going really well in practise and in qualifying, but the car just began falling to bits around him (they were hurriedly trying to patch together part of the diffuser on the grid, but that didn't last for long). In some ways, he was perhaps a little lucky not to get a black and orange flag first given the number of bits of bodywork that fell off his car.

Esteban Ocon, because anytime I'm watching and I think "slam dunk Reject Of The Race", that's what I'll go for. If you're auditioning for a Mercedes drive when Lewis retires or The Wingman gets given the Kvyat treatment, you're going about it the wrong way, mate. That there are Alex Jones-esque conspiracies going round that he did it on purpose to hand Lewis a win that wasn't his on the day doesn't help his cause one bit.

While most folks are probably and rightfully nominating Ocon for -that- boneheaded move, I gotta give a shout to Max Verstappen for what transpired afterwards...

This whole ordeal had all the makings of a NASCAR-style post-race brawl. After the wreck, Max insinuated over the radio he was going to beat the shite out of Ocon after the race. Then, Max goes looking for Ocon after they're out of the car wanting to have a "conversation" with him. Thank heavens no pit crews were around and we only saw a couple of shoves from Max when the two met. F1 definitely does not need a picture of Ocon getting punched in the face circulating the interwebs, and it would all be Max's fault.

I'm going to give a mention to Horner too for condoning Max's behaviour. If this is the sort of atmosphere the F1 community now has no wonder we have spoiled entitled gits like Max in F1 these days. And yes Max's role in the collision is a classic example of how immature a racing driver he still is. For once I agree with Lewis, a more mature driver would have let Ocon go and not risk himself.

Ocon, pure and simple. Lucky to get away with just a couple of shoves.

Well it's obvious who it's going to be, but I'll nominate something else completely different: Ricciardo's grid penalty when it was caused by a marshal in Mexico - surely common sense should have been applied as it the fault of an outside party? He could have been in a position to win had he started from his rightful grid position.

McLaren - seriously. They were both in the last two positions for most of the race, with Stoffel Vandoorne having actually qualified dead-last, and Alonso reaches the graceful end of his career by getting a penalty for ignoring blue flags. They're so slow even the stewards are telling them to get out of the way. Ouch.

and also Esteban Ocon.

To add another name:

I implied that Ocon might have done it deliberately as a joke in the race thread.

The ever classy Helmut Marko implied it not as a joke. I therefore nominate Marko.

Verstappen - the rights and wrongs don't matter: you want to win a race/championship, don't get into that situation.

Verstappen/Ocon should be given as a joint nomination. Sadly for Ocon this isn't IndyCar where the blue flag rules are different (Though after the events of Singapore I wouldn't mind those rules being implemented) and it ruined what would surely have been a race winning performance. Verstappen though wasn't exactly fully past Ocon though so probably expected Ocon to just disappear

Elsewhere McLaren's situation has become so dire to the point where Alonso genuinely doesn't care that he's ignoring blue flags. I don't think I saw them outside the bottom 2 or 3 places all weekend and tbh I honestly think that even Williams have been better than them for the last 4-5 races which doesn't really say much anyway and is a sobering reminder of how far these 2 great teams have fallen

I'll avoid the Verstappen and / or Ocon options and I'll go for McLaren. Embarassing.

Until recently, McLaren had 3 things that could conceivably still classify them as a top team:
1) a factory engine
2) a top driver
3) history

1 was gone at the end of last year, 2 is going very soon and 3 is more and more distant. McLaren will be no more than a midfield team, at best. That saddens me.

I'm sorry but that one's 100% on Renault and Red Bull for not checking it earlier. It's fairly common knowledge that fire extinguisher fluid does pretty nasty stuff to metal components, and ultimately, the marshal's job was to get Dale out of that car safely, not try to save them a few thousand quid

I've just finished watching the race. I get it Ocon, mate, you were trying to unlap yourself, but in order to do so you threw yourself around that corner in a way I don't think can be easily justified, and as a result, the guy in first place (who for once wasn't Hamilton) lost out.

Nomination: Ocon.

Just couldn't bring myself to vote for the Max - Steve proposition. Esteban was a bit aggressive but did nothing wrong. My view is that as soon as an axle overlaps (i.e front axle to rear axle) that is enough to claim your +-11 square meters of track space.

Yeah, it was a tough decision whether to put the different incidents as their own events, though the whole escapade was a largely rejectful affair. But yeah, whilst I don't think it was an equal share of blame between the two drivers, I do think that was the easiest way to handle a poll like this.

So in Brazil we are recording something of a joint award here for Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon. Both drivers have been vilified post-race for their crazy antics, with the latter creating a crash with the leader that was largely his own blame, and with the former hardly maintaining an air of decorum under the circumstances. The crash itself was easily enough to win Reject of the Race, though the post-race fracas between the two at the weighbridge took away what sympathy there was from Max. So I think it's fair that Reject of the Race should go to both drivers as a result.

10 points: Ocon - that was completely stupid. He's clearly feeling the pressure now, but it begs the question of whether he's anything better than a strong midfielder.

6 points: Alonso - One of the greats stuck in a useless car, getting flustered and ignoring blue flags was painful to watch.

Dishonorable mention: Ericsson's luck - owing to Leclerc's pace and Ericsson's qualifying, a great result was possible. His race only went wrong with early race damage, and it's hard to imagine he was anything other than relieved when he stepped out of his Sauber.

Another dishonorable mention to Sirotkin - on the grid he talked about the possibility of rain or snow.

Not much snow in Brazil, especially around November, which is their Summer!
