Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Hungary

Post by Londoner »

1. George Russell. Undisputed winner of this award this weekend, was able to battle and finish ahead of midfielders on merit. Maybe, just maybe Williams have turned the corner.

2. Ollie Jackson. Finally proving himself worthy of the Motorbase Focus at Snetterton today.

I suspect that, for simply being able to beat other drivers on merit, Russell is going to be getting a lot of nominations there - it's still a long way for Williams to regain respectability, but they're slowly clawing their way back into the midfield (at least with his car...).

Sainz and Kimi also deserve nomination too - both of them put in fairly decent races and withstood a fair amount of pressure during the race.

You also have to say that the Mercedes strategists pulled off a pretty clever call there, because they completely surprised Red Bull - fair credit to Hamilton, he had to pump in the lap times to make it work, but the strategists called it right that Verstappen wouldn't be able to make it to the end.

"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

My nomination is Lewis Hamilton, with some help from the Mercedes strategy. As unsurprising as Hamilton winning is in most cases, those laps catching Verstappen were simply incredible!

Also Russell and Sainz deserve honorable mentions for their performances.

1- George Russel Well after years of mediocre British drivers coming through since Hamilton(Stevens, Palmer god help us and the king himself Max Chilton :chilton: ) we actually now have three good British talents in our ranks. Russel drove a terrific race and was in the genuine midfield battle and is showing what he can do. I will be gutted if he is the only driver this season not to score a point.

2- Mercedes strategy team - good god they actually pulled it off for once. A great call with the pitstops that won them the race on merit.

HM- Guenther Steiner- I never thought the day would come but he did carry out his threat of Team orders and the drivers didn't crash. But to be fair to him he shouldn't have to do that...

1) Hamilton's Strategists. A win by Hamilton is the norm instead of the exception, but his strategists picked the best possible time to switch strategies, forcing Red Bull to go 1 lap over the threshold to stay on Hard tires, a strategy which ultimately came a few laps short for Verstappen.

2) Mclaren. Held the mid points for most of the race, the team cemented themselves as the 4th best team on the grid going into the summer break.

Honourable Mentions:
George Russell (Just missed out on Q2 by a hair, and pitched aggressively in the midfield in an attempt to drag his awful car into the points. Hopefully he gets better machinery next year, wherever he goes if he stays in F1.)

Kimi Raikkonen (Pulls yet another calm and firm drive for a good points haul)

Alexander Albon (Came out on top against his teammate and Perez to take 10th)

1st: Russell Really pushed the Williams up the order, maybe just a few places, but still a good job

2nd: Mclaren Having a good day is becoming less and less infinitely improbable

3rd:Raikonnen Strong stuff that weekend

HM: Grosjean and Magnussen Went a whole race distance with no significant impact.

Now that it's clear that Mercedes aren't just racing against B Tier teams (thanks solely to Red Bull and no one else) I feel they've earned a nomination on merit. That was excellently done. They didn't just run away with the race like they did for the whole start of the season, and Hamilton was on top of his game. But it was ultimately the Strategy team who pulled this off.

KIMI RÄIKKÖNEN.
It's the middle of the season, so lets take a moment to reflect on the fact that Kimi Raikkonen is 8th in the standings. In an Alfa Romeo. I had high hopes for him but he has absolutely blown me away. Alfa Romeo is ahead of Racing Point in the constructors entirely thanks to Kimi. Without Giovinazzi's one point, they would be tied with Racing Point. Kimi is one good race away from Alfa overtaking Renault in the standings. With a bit of luck he could be challenging Sainz for 7th place in the standings. Holy moly. And this race was just more icing on an already good cake.

Technically I’d say we’ve got 4 if you include Alex Albon being born in London but competing for Thailand

George Russell: No contest. I’d have only had him down as an HM on qualifying only because anyone can get the perfect lap nailed on their day. But to stay in the midfield mix and finish ahead of cars on merit means he’s the clear winner.

Mercedes Strategists: They won that race. Ferrari could learn something in proactiveness

After being upstaged by his teammate Robert Kubica, in the latter's incredible feat of gaining a point for the Williams team, it seemed like George Russell would never have his time in the sun. However, the forces of F1 and his own hard work all throughout the weekend brought the attention of the website, and he earns this race weekend's Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race.
