Driver Profile - Harald Ertl

Post by Londoner »

Good morning everyone.

Chase Carey may have the most striking facial hair in the Formula One circus nowadays, but even his glorious 'stache isn't a patch on the subject of our latest Driver Profile. Harald Ertl followed a number of his Austrian contemporaries into motorsport during the 70s, even saving the life of Niki Lauda after his horrendous accident in 1976.

Fresh off his star-making performances on University Challenge, our very own tommykl has put together this excellent profile, which you can read here today!

As an interesting corollary to that profile, it appears that the BMW M1 that Ertl used for that record run has recently been rediscovered, although unfortunately it is looking considerably the worse for wear now. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/classi ... m1-world#1

Interesting story. 1975 and 1976 was rich with tons of stories from Formula One, and it's nice of us to flesh out what happened at the back of the field while everyone else makes movies about the frontrunners.

Awesome job as always!

Everyone should grow a massive beard in tribute. I did, some time ago.

If your name is Turbogirl, knit a false beard out of brown wool.
James Allen, on his favourite F1 engine of all time:
"...the Life W12, I can't describe the noise to you, but imagine filling your dustbin with nuts and bolts, and then throwing it down the stairs, it was something akin to that!"

In my youth I didnt much rate Harald - I think the beard put me off - so it was good to read a more impartial view of his career. Thanks tommykl
I started supporting Emmo in 1976 (3 points )....missed 75, 74, 73, 72...
