Complete list of reject drivers and teams

Post by Bobby Doorknobs »

This is a revamp of a previous thread in the Jean-Denis Délétraz Memorial Forum that listed every reject. The purpose of this new list is to denote the drivers and teams that are profiled or not, whether by us or by F1 Rejects. Hopefully this should serve as a future aid for anyone wanting to write a profile of an existing reject. The chances of us being allowed to republish the old F1 Rejects content remain slim at best, but in case that changes at any point in the future I would discourage anyone from attempting to write a new profile on any rejects marked in blue. Only a fraction of all reject drivers and teams have been profiled, so there are still hundreds of stories that remain untold. I have decided to discount the Indy 500 altogether to reduce headaches, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see a Rodger Ward profile!

The reject criteria, as originally laid out by Jamie and Enoch on F1 Rejects, are listed below.

All a former Formula One driver needs to do to escape eligibility for this site is to have been successful in F1. Specifically, they must have scored ...
  • a 4th, 3rd, 2nd or 1st place, or
  • a 5th place, plus any other top-6 result, or
  • three or more 6th places
All a former Formula One team needs to have done to get a page on this site is ...
  • to have appeared as an entrant at at least one Grand Prix weekend and
  • to have scored 6 points or fewer under the 1991-2002 scoring system, assuming every car was eligible for points
How hard can that be? Very!

Our definition of a "team"

The history of teams, constructors and privateer entrants in F1 is a long, complicated and very interesting one. But for the purposes of this website, we've had to make certain decisions as to what we will consider a "team" eligible for a profile here, and what we won't. With this in mind, we present the following four guidelines...
  • includes teams attempting to enter F1 as a constructor at some point in their lifetime
  • includes privateer teams entering F1 in partnership with a chassis-maker
  • does not include privateer teams only utilising customer chassis
  • does not include constructors supplying customer chassis to teams
Of course, these are just guidelines, and we reserve the right to do whatever the heck we want, and profile whomever and whatever we want! But we'll try to stick to the above.

In addition, drivers killed in a Formula One car (or Formula Two during 1952-53), or have died as a result of injuries sustained in a Formula One car, but still technically hold reject status, are not eligible for a profile here. Any articles of this nature are more likely to take the form of a tribute than a full profile that would be posted in the driver profile section of the website.

The argument could be made that Mr B. C. Ecclestone is still currently writing their own story in F1 (albeit no longer as a driver or team boss).

It may be worth putting at the top of the list what makes a reject driver or team, as I am sure we all know it, however any newbies might not have the faintest idea what the list is about.

I know how a driver or team is unrejectified, but to be honest, the definition for becoming a reject initially seems to be a bit more vague and woolly...

Well, I'd qualify it as being a driver who entered a Grand Prix weekend with the intention to compete in the race itself, as opposed to a designated reserve or Friday driver.

I used to assume it was somebody who actually took part in a qualifying or pre-qualifying session, but this definition seems rather strict compared to some others' definitions.

Indeed. I chose to use this definition to include the likes of Masami Kuwashima, Jorge de Bagration and Ricardo Londono-Bridge, but not Chanoch Nissany, Giorgio Mondini or Enrico Toccacelo.

I agree that the likes of Susie Wolff don't really qualify as a Reject. But those that were on the entry list but didn't turn up or just never turned a wheel? Could they really be said to have done enough to be eligible?

Jorge de Bagration got a profile on F1 Rejects despite only appearing on the original entry list for the 1974 Spanish GP, so I think it's only fair that the likes of Geoff Duke, Peter Monteverdi and Erik Lundgren are also an option for any prospective writers. I think all three would make for a fascinating read.

As for including the criteria, look away from the opening post for a few minutes ;)

And I promised a debate thread on team criteria, didn't I? I do have a section of a rather long post on the matter saved in my drafts (actually, it's been there for about five months!) and I will get on it once I've gotten some college essays out of the way (probably tomorrow, definitely before the end of the month).

I was going to ask what the hell Larrousse were doing on that list, but I noticed Venturi and gathered that you're just counting 1993-94.

Added a note regarding reject drivers who were killed in an F1 car (Paletti, Bianchi, Ratzenberger etc.), as they are ineligible for a proper driver profile, though tributes are welcome.

That definition would raise the question of whether Bernie would actually be eligible then, because I recall seeing a suggestion that Bernie's efforts in qualifying were not undertaken with the intention of trying to race. Rather, the suggestion is that, by participating in that qualifying event and therefore technically counting as an entrant, he ensured that the team would receive a cut of the prize money.

Teams are tricky to sort out... Larrousse (team) Venturi (constructor) scored one point with a 6th, Larrousse as a constructor in their own right did score three 6ths and a 5th so are not technically a reject team.

Three 6ths and a 5th add up to just five points. A team needs more than six to escape reject status.

I've edited the teams list as per the criteria proposed in the "Redefining a reject team" thread, however, a brief discussion with Biscione earlier revealed he's more willing to take a relaxed stance on the whole matter, so you can write about Osella or Minardi or whoever you want, just make sure it's good ;)

This disappoints me because I wanted to see an eventual A.J. Foyt profile. Would be funny only because that probably the greatest racing driver of them all would be technically a GP Reject... ;D

...but the man Foyt says is the greatest sprint car driver of all time, Troy Ruttman, is a GP Reject. Robin Miller did a video short on Ruttman some time ago but it includes none of his lone Grand Prix start in Reims.

The names Lloyd Ruby and Bobby Unser stood out as well -- and both of them are certainly characters in their own right. Ruby was the Roberto Guerrero of his time as far as bad luck and missed chances are concerned, and Uncle Bobby Unser is almost a larger-than-life person in his own right.

Neat list though. ;D

We have a new set of articles for Super Aguri, if you don't stay abreast of the global forum announcements.. The first part is available here, and there should be links to go to the next parts within the articles.

Sébastien Buemi, Geki, Gimax, Lucas di Grassi and Hermann Lang have all been marked green; profiles are beginning construction by three separate authors, one of whom is being very ambitious ;)

If you can give any assistance in the research of these profiles, please post what you have in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7760

Pedro Lamy is now marked green.

All going well we should have quite a bit of content coming our way in the near-future

The purpose of this new list is to denote the drivers and teams that are profiled or not, whether by us or by F1 Rejects. Hopefully this should serve as a future aid for anyone wanting to write a profile of an existing unprofiled reject. The chances of us being allowed to republish the old Jenoch content remain slim at best, but in case they do allow us at any point in the future I would discourage anyone from attempting to write a new profile on any rejects marked in blue. Only a fraction of all reject drivers and teams have been profiled, so there are still hundreds of stories that remain untold. I have decided to discount the Indy 500 altogether to reduce headaches, because who wouldn't want to see a Rodger Ward profile? ;)

This disappoints me because I wanted to see an eventual A.J. Foyt profile...

As it turns out, Foyt is an eligible reject, as indicated here and supported here.

Peter Ryan is now green, despite my declaration of a short sabbatical (now very short!) following the colossus that was Buemi's story. This profile will be mercifully short for me by comparison, though not for good reasons.

I'm also giving myself until the start of next season to have it finished, so this really will feel like a holiday compared to the Buemi project.

This project may also be put on hold if for whatever reason a certain candidate for a Williams drive next year somehow does not get the seat.

And with his performance today, Carlos Sainz's name will be stricken from the list.

Since the F1 Rejects ones are no longer available (to my knowledge), does GP Rejects plan to re-do them?

They are available via the Wayback Machine, but to answer your question, no, we don't plan on retreading old ground. We can't republish them either as we don't have Jamie and Enoch's permission.

Fair answer. Shame really, as I never got to read them all! :)

As a suggestion, maybe change the colour of drivers/teams that WERE featured, so that if a newcomer reads that list, they won't be looking for stuff that isn't there.

I didn't expect such an extensive list. How many people have been working on this?

As many people as there are posts written by you on this forum. ;)

Well, sort of. This list was actually copy-pasted from an older one in the Jean-Denis Délétraz forum, then I just added and removed names as necessary to bring it up to date... And did the colour coding which presumably took several days (I can't even remember!).
