Reject (or not) track design.

Post by tommykl »

I'm asking everyone to come with track layouts, any way you can, that are rejectful/quite good/amazing. You can also give a brief description of the track, and how it's rejectful/quite good/amazing.

Here's mine:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4044569
A street circuit on the hills overlooking Liege, Belgium, around a hospital. Lots of elevation changes, trees on the side of the road. A slow chicane is the only bad bit. Otherwise, the quick Becketts-like section also offers a great view of the city, as well as being right next to a monument. Length: 3.8 km.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4044691 Basically my local area, starting on my road. Because of the elevation change, I reckon if it was a left turn rather than a right turn at the first junction, it would be a great start for a race.

A long fast track around my home town of Durham, somewhat reminiscent of the old Spa-Francorchamps with a hairpin first corner. Includes two crossings of the River Wear, a cathedral and castle for a backdrop and numerous elevation changes.

Since my teens in the 90s, I've drawn the occasional track design. I was very happy when, a few years ago, I found this message board that focuses on the subject.

Since we are talking hometown circuits, here is one that I have posted on the other board and runs through the town where I grew up. It's clockwise and has got a length of 4.8 kilometers. It's rather highspeed for the most part and has got a rather tiny number of corners, a width of two lanes at most places and a stone paved section that is leading downhill into a heavy breaking zone. I guess it can only be run by touring cars and F3 because it's just not wide enough for higher formulae and speeds.

At first, here is a drawing:
Image

Next, the G-Map-Pedometer image:
Image

And finally, a screenshot from some professional geo software:
Image

I hope you like it. I don't consider it a reject track for the racing it would produce, but for the safety features (lack of possible escape roads etc.) and the fact that in the place where the pits area would be, they have recently erected a hog house.
"I don't think we should be used to finance (the manufacturers') R&D because they will produce that engine anyway" said Monisha Kaltenborn.
"You will never see a Mercedes using a Ferrari engine or the other way round."

Seeing as everyone else was designing around their local area, so did I.

A nice fast circuit, with a LOT of elevation, two traffic circles on the route and stat & finish-line right next to a metro station&shopping mall with a BIG parking garage underneath for all the teams pit-needs.

If you don't know already, you can play your GoogleMaps tracks (albeit without elevation changes etc.) with McLaren's nifty simulator: http://www.vodafone.com/start/sponsorsh ... wn_gp.html

Yup, it was mentioned in The Racing Game Thread. It's good, there's a small elevation change but nothing like a few of the roads i've been using.

Here's my attempt, a Le-Mans length track in and out of my hometown, which goes past my house :

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4046144

Part street circuit, part rural, and the Horringer Road run has some good elevation changes with a slight Eau-Rouge
like section. The Horringer to Westley run would basically be around 1 mile full throttle before a sharp right left chicane,
not too sure how you'd cope with the traffic-calming islands in Westley though...

The start/finish line should probably be on this stretch somewhere, not where I actually put it. Oh, at the roundabout at
the top of the map should be just one turn to the right, but the pedometer makes you go the 'proper' way all around the roundabout,
in actual fact it's a big roundabout so you could probably get away with sending them all the way round (you can go at least 50mph
round it in your own car).

The overall map kind of looks a bit like the Österreichring ... And it'd be a nightmare to set your car up for!

Heres a track I'd like to see one day, even if it were simply put, quite dangerous.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4046527
Wavy, twisty, topsy turvy, Mickey-Mousey.
Its a bit long, but it has... elevation changes! And substantial ones too. Up to 100m by my reckoning.
My version of Clermont-Ferrand.

A track around my hometown. The start line would be on The Northen Road, and would race in a counter-clockwise direction.

I was just naming it after all the German drivers I know! Starting from the earliest guys (ie Lang). As I got closer to the 21st century, all I could think of was Heidfeld/Glock/Frentzen. I was going for HHF, but I like Nick better. :D

I like the way all the corners on Hometown GP are banked.

Anyway, here's my submission: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4049973

Will give it a run on Hometown GP later today.

Quite funny that you say that because on a track that I made in my home town there is only one slightly banked corner in real life. Have a guess which corner was the only one without any banking.

Another interesting glitch is that scenery such as mountains can often be on the wrong side of the track as I found out when I made a track on the France/Monaco border (the mountains were in Monaco instead of France).

My first ever post on this forum was advocating a GP on the Isle of Man. So I have decided to come up with my own variation on a Manx track. I started by trying to keep the track to a typical GP track length around the island's capital of Douglas, always using the Manx TT grandstand/pit straight as my starting point but struggled to keep the track below 10 miles (16 km for all those using the French Republic units of measurement) so I thought,"What the heck?" and did my own mega-length track. But it is still 6 miles short of the Manx TT track of 37 miles...
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4060915

This is about as short as you can get away with while taking in the Victorian seafront and using the TT pit straight/grandstand:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4060933

And one final Manx track not using the TT pits/grandstand:

The ability to view saved tracks and tracks designed by other people is working for me now, so I invite you all to sample a crazy track that I have just designed in the villages of Aureggio, Bellagio and Pescallo, on the shore of Lake Como, with the name "Gran Premio di Como" (there's another track in the same area designed by someone else called "Anywhere"). Welcome to a world of switchbacks and steep hills!

Minardi95, I like your idea of a track around Yosemite. Unfortunately I created one with an identical layout before realising it.

Quite a few real circuit roads (Monza, Imola, Bahrain, Monaco, Montreal, Silverstone, Spa, Nurburgring) are also available on Google Maps, and people have created accurate tracks for this game. It's interesting to look at Monaco, and see how poor some people's geographical skills are!

Has anyone else seen Superleague Formula at the new track in Ordos, Inner Mongolia (China) last weekend? The racing (in Race 2 and the "Superfinal") was great, but that's not why I'm writing here.
They have a chicane there that doubles as a sand trap. Also there is a bump in the middle of said chicane that makes the cars take of - every lap!!!

A track of mine, its setting is my hometown Empoli, is going to be built in simracing!

For Gtr2 and GTL, possibly later it will be converted to RFactor too.

this is the layout...

I think I might call one of the straights "F1 Rejects Straight"...or perhaps there might be one HWNSNBM Corner??
