The Totally Ripper/Bonza V8 Supercar Thread.

Post by ADx_Wales »

In the wake of the Bathurst 1000 and seeing as we're slowly heading towards the Reject-gasmic event at Surfers Paradise for the Gold Coast 600, It's time to look at the recent years of V8 Supercars for levels of Rejectry

And so to Youtube...

Canberra's flawed street-track (not as flawed as those of China), and Marcos Ambrose's wheel covers more distance than the rest of his car does...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAaRm4lJMGg
Commentary Team of Leigh Diffey (Now doing some SPEEDtv coverage), The Great Barry Sheene (dont ask me how) and Neil Crompton (the Martin Brundle of V8 supercars)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37-Ng_cy ... re=related
Reject Action, (somebody) Donahue in 2001, deciding to cause mayhem on the greatest uphill stretch of racetrack.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUwn8NIZ ... re=related
2005, and the Chinese F1 Venue does its best to embararass itself yet again by having drain covers pop open during the race, claiming the life of the Ford Falcon driven by Bathurst 2010 Pole-sitter Mark "Frosty" Winterbottom.

Brad Jones Rolls in New Zeland

Brad Jones Rolls near Perth

For the next race in that season, the team put the title sponsor BOC on the car upside down, although it was probably not as a joke.

Back to Bathurst 2001, and what was missing from the 2010 edition....

Wet Weather.
Also, Craig Lowndes' first season as a Ford driver, hence the big cheer from all the Holdenites at "OzEmail" Elbow

It actually was as a joke. The team actually suggested that the sponsor logo should be placed under the car after Jones rolled it in NZ.

Now for some more V8 Supercars action...

These first two videos are of one of V8 Supercars' serial crashers, Jason Richards

New Zealand 2003
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TtXQ7tbKhE

Queensland Raceway 2005 (this was after being hit by the Dirty Dangerous Dude, Paul Morris)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuK4NkKqv_E

Now for the infamous Skaife/Ingall incident at Eastern Creek in 2003. Skaife and Ingall's teammate Ambrose were battling for the title when Ingall punted Skaife off. However the crash was not the most interesting part of this incident.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7TzEnvt ... re=related

Another infamous incident, this time at Bathurst '05. Ambrose had been penalised for not wearing a fireproof balaclava and was trying to make his way back up the field when he tangled with Murphy. Again the crash was not the most interesting part.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7Jogger ... re=related

Again, another video from Bathurst '05. Dumbrell hits the wall and loses a wheel which goes straight into the path of Lowndes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBx9wQjl ... re=related

Oran Park 2000, and one of the Perkins cars has a slow start. Morris hits the back of the Perkins car. Mark Larkham slams into the back of Morris' car, bursting the fuel tank on the Big Kev Commodore which results in a fire. Both drivers were extremely lucky to escape from this crash.

Didn't Murph go into a nearby house to watch the replays?

Why can't we have a championship like this in the UK to run alongside the regular BTCC?

Absolutely shameful. I would be utterly embarrassed if I became champion that way. Those actions should be punished hard.

One of the many obstacles on the mountain are kangaroos which will hop across the track without warning. Only one was hit, when Jim Richards hit a roo coming up to the Cutting in 2004.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0D55LHY ... re=related

Now for some footage from the years before Australian Touring Cars became V8 Supercars.

This is the finish to the '92 Bathurst 1000 when Jim Richards crashed out of the lead in the Nissan. The race was then stopped due to the track being blocked and the crowd were convinced that Dick Johnson and John Bowe had won. The results were decided by a one lap countback and the Richards/Skaife Nissan was declared the winner. This made way for the infamous podium celebrations when the crowd jeered the Nissan drivers. I'm going to leave what "Gentleman" Jim said as a surprise for all of the people who haven't seen this (Warning: there is some swearing, so if you don't like that, don't watch this video) Sound is a bit laggy on the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_NKQjbN ... re=related

Another famous incident, this time from the '82 Bathurst 1000. Kevin Bartlett had a tyre fail on him at the top of the mountain, causing the car to roll. The Camaro was then refered to as the Channel 6 Camaro.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=423qAJG133Q

In 1980, little known (at the time) Queenslander Dick Johnson was leading the 1000km race 17 laps in when he hit a rock on the track. The TV cameras never caught what happened but Dick had nowhere to go other than hitting the rescue truck or hitting the rock. At the time Dick was only a privateer driver, scraping up funds to go racing. In an interview on TV he said that this would be his last ever race as he was out of money. Channel 7 then ran a campaign to raise money for Dick and Edsel Ford II said he would match every donation dollar for dollar. Dick then came back and won the '81 race.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nErou_JWx7A

Here's a clip all you Walkinshaw haters will absolutely love. "Uncle Tom" brought his team of Jaguars to Bathurst in '84... and didn't even make it to the startline.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG08IWLYbn4

Back in 1971, Bill Brown had a horrific crash when a tyre burst on his Falcon which sent the car rolling on top of the fence. Fortunately he escaped with only minor injuries.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us1atrMY ... re=related

Now back to the modern "V8 Supercars" era.

Craig Lowndes' crash at Calder in '99 was easily one of the biggest startline crashes in the history of V8's. Other drivers came over to help, including Larry Perkins who went over to check what parts were on the dominant HRT cars.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3Hkws3h ... re=related

Until Friday this year, Greg Murphy's 2003 qualifying lap was the fastest lap ever in a V8 at Bathurst. It is still considered better than Lowndes' lap this year because it was in one-lap qualifying, and Murphy had actually missed a gear.

Bargs gets squeezed off at Phillip Island in '02, and is one the stacks that I remeber well. What really annoyed me was it was all Greg Murphy's fault.

I'm watching it right now and that was incredibly messy. He did get helped by Ritter though...

But Ritter is in a GRM and is therefore awesome. And McConville and Villeneuve get penalties for false starts. Curses! (for Cam, anyway. Not the Canadian. He's in a Ford.)

You have a point there but even so that wasn't the smartest thing to do on the part of both Ritter and Villeneuve.

Anyways I get the feeling that Luff is starting to hold people up...

FPR have done the best they can to get as far away from Villeneuve as possible by planting their cars on the front row.

The irony here is that the Bottle-O car that Villeneuve is driving is actually the '3rd FPR car' as Rod Nash Racing has a technical alliance with FPR.

Probably just V8 Supercars sucking up to Walkinshaw. V8 Supercars is becoming a bit like NASCAR in this respect as they are trying to get the teams that they want to win the race to win. How come Tander's drive through decision was reversed? Whincup had something similar at Adelaide this year (black flagged for loose bodywork which fell off before he took the drive through) but the drive through decision wasn't reversed. Courtney's penalty sounds as ridiculous as the penalty that Vettel got at Hungary for being more than 10 car lengths behind the next car.
