Your own driver rankings

Post by good_Ralf »

It's my first day on this forum and I am just streaming with ideas.

As I can't find any reference that this thread has existed, this new one is for you to post your own driver rankings for any particular season.

For example, 2008 (produced on Excel):

2008

Pos Driver Out of 10
1 Felipe Massa 9.0
2 Fernando Alonso 9.0
3 Sebastian Vettel 9.0
4 Robert Kubica 8.5
5 Lewis Hamilton 8.0
6 Nick Heidfeld 7.0
7 Heikki Kovalainen 6.5
8 Jarno Trulli 6.5
9 Timo Glock 6.5
10 Mark Webber 6.5
11 Kimi Räikkonen 6.0
12 Nico Rosberg 6.0
13 Rubens Barrichello 6.0
14 Nelson Piquet Jr. 5.5
15 David Coulthard 5.5
16 Kazuki Nakajima 5.0
17 Sebastien Bourdais 4.5
18 Giancarlo Fisichella 4.5
19 Jenson Button 4.0
20 Adrian Sutil 4.0

Yes, Massa is unexpectedly at the top, but he did blow his reigning World Champion teammate into the weeds in the second half of the season and strung together a serious challenge for the title.
Sutil is last by default, but I think Jamie and Enoch were right to put Jenson Button dead last given how he was nowhere near as quick or consistent as in 2007.

I think the only reason why Button got ROTY in 2008 was Piquet's fluke podium in Germany that year. :(

Gosh, 2008 was a depressing season for me. My favourite driver was absolutely nowhere in that awful Honda, Massa loses the title at the final corner, Kubica lost his best opportunity for a title challenge, Lewisteria is rampant, and the stewards were clearly smoking strong stuff considering some of their actions that year.

1. Massa - 9.0
2. Kubica - 9.0
3. Hamilton - 8.5
4. Vettel - 8.5
5. Alonso - 8.0
6. Heidfeld - 7.0
7. Barrichello - 7.0
8. Webber - 6.5
9. Rosberg - 6.5
10. Glock - 6.0
11. Trulli - 6.0
12. Kovalainen - 6.0
13. Raikkonen - 5.5
14. Coulthard - 5.5
15. Nakajima - 5.0
16. Bourdais - 4.5
17. Fisichella - 4.5
18. Sutil - 4.0
19. Button - 4.0
20. Piquet - 3.5
N/A: Sato, Davidson.

I love your ideas Good-Ralf but don't overextend yourself. Canada is up this weekend where i submit about 50 posts in 1 day. It's not like December 21 is being rumored again.

Anyway i think 2010 is easier
1 Robert Kubica 9.0 (Bounced back from horror 2009 to come within 8 points of P6 in the title in an inferior car)
2 Fernando Alonso 8.5 (Just when he looked dead and buried he came back to almost win the crown)
3 Mark Webber 8.5 (Drove out of his skin and if he hadn't duffed up in Korea he would be Number 1)
4 Lewis Hamilton 8.0 (3 fine wins but his errors at the end cost him dearly)
5 Sebastian Vettel 8.0 (Yes he was champion but he should have steamrollered it not won it barely)
6 Nico Rosberg 7.5 (Destroyed Schumacher and could get in amongst the Title contenders on a good day)
7 Jenson Button 7.5 (His 2 wins came in mixed conditions and Italy was the only time he looked the quicker Mclaren in the dry)
8 Rubens Barrichello 7.0 (Dragged the Williams to places it didn't belong)
9 Kamui Kobayashi 6.5 (When Sauber sorted out the speed and reliability he shone)
10 Adrian Sutil 6.5 (Battered Liuzzi even if he trailed off a bit at the end)
11 Felipe Massa 6.5 (Nothing Looked wrong after Australia but fell off the pace and then came Germany)
12 Nico Hulkenberg 6.0 (Fantastic pole puts him up here but drives in Hungary and Italy were good)
13 Michael Schumacher 6.0 (Apart from Spain Turkey and Korea he was hopelessly battered by Rosberg)
14 Heikki Kovalainen 6.0 (Outperformed Trulli and his Lotus and made a good impression)
15 Nick Heidfeld 5.5 (Did anyone think he would be back in the points that quickly)
16 Jaime Alguersuari 5.5 (Move on Hulk at Malaysia was one of the moves of the year. Deserved more points)
17 Karun Chandhok 5.0 (Made Senna Look poor when the car was set up for him)
18 Timo Glock 5.0 (Creamed Di Grassi and his Singapore heroics proved he still had it)
19 Pedro de la Rosa 5.0 (Should have scored more points than he did but he kept Kamui honest)
20 Vitaly Petrov 4.5 (His rookie season was on a par with Takuma Sato's: Promise but many crashes)
21 Sebastien Buemi 4.5 (Promising 2009 failed to transfer over to 2010)
22 Christian Klein 4.5 (Thrashed Senna despite having not sat in an F1 car since 2006)
23 Jarno Trulli 4.0 (Power Steering issues asides he was dominated by Heikki)
24 Sakon Yamamoto 3.5 (Outqualified Senna and was closer than many people thought he would be)
25 Vitantonio Liuzzi 3.5 (Korea Canada and Australia aside where was he for most of the year?)
26 Lucas di Grassi 3.0 (Valencia was the only time he comfortably beat Glock)
27 Bruno Senna 2.5 (When you're being outqualified by Sakon Yamamoto you're in big trouble)

Whaaaaaat? Image

Anyway, I quite like this idea. Here's my ratings for 2008.

2008
1. Robert Kubica - 10: He could've won the title in the clear 3rd best car had Nakajima not taken him out of 2nd in Australia, he hadn't gone off in the pouring rain at Silverstone, and BMW had kept developing the car enough for him to score a couple more points. Admittedly that was as much down to Massa and Hamilton throwing away points, but it was still a brilliant, brilliant year. It was this year long performance that convinced me Kubica was the next big thing, and I still maintain that he would be the best driver on the grid if he was still there.
2. Fernando Alonso - 9.5: I despised Alonso at the beginning of the year, but this was where he started to make me change my mind. The guy never gave up even when he knew from day 1 he would not be a title contender.
3. Sebastian Vettel - 8.5: He drove like a boss from midseason on, but drops a point for his scruffy start to the year
4. Felipe Massa - 7.5: Threw away points just as much as Hamilton did. Also was horrendously unlucky in Hungary with the engine failure after dominating the race and Singapore, where Ferrari cost him dearly with the botched pitstop.
5. Lewis Hamilton - 7.5: One of the scruffiest championships ever, and a clear step down from his awesome 2007, which I now doubt he'll ever do again. If Massa was the tiniest bit luckier, or less scruffy, or Kubica had a better car, then he would not be World Champion
6. Mark Webber - 7.5: Great first half of the year, looked like being best of the rest. Then Red Bull became useless after France and was irrelevant afterwards.
7. Kimi Raikkonen - 7: Looked like repeating - until Canada. After that, he seemed to lose some of his luster.
8. Sebastien Bourdais - 7: Not as good as Vettel, but better than the results table showed. Should've been on the podium in Belgium and Italy. And then that absurd penalty in Japan...
9. Nico Rosberg - 7: Ho hum. Your typical pre-2013 Nico Rosberg.
10. Nick Heidfeld - 6.5: Only 15 points behind Kubica, and finished 2nd 4 times. But that's down to his innate ability to just quietly pick up points - he never looked at ease with the car, to be honest.
11. Jarno Trulli - 6.5: Alright, but nothing great.
12. Heikki Kovalainen - 6: A fluke win, 2 more podiums and 7th in the standings in a title winning car. Heikki is right when he says he blew it at McLaren. He should've been much much better.
13. Timo Glock - 6: Took a bit longer than I thought it would have to get into the groove, but he was pretty good on occasion.
14. Kazuki Nakajima - 5.5: Looked decent at the start of the year, but tailed off AND HE COST KUBICA SECOND IN AUSTRALIA WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT Image
15. David Coulthard - 5.5: Outclassed by Webber all year. It was pretty clear by the end that it was time to hang up the helmet.
16. Giancarlo Fisichella - 4.5: Underperformed a bit, I think.
17. Nelson Piquet Jr - 4: Had two good drives all year, in Germany and Japan, and that's probably what saved his career. Terrible otherwise.
18. Rubens Barrichello - 3.5: Podium at Silverstone... and nothing else.
19. Jenson Button - 3: Ughhhh...
20. Adrian Sutil - 2.5: Apart from his brief Monaco heroics (that shouldn't have really happened, what with the whole overtaking under yellow flags thing), he pretty much just crashed all year.
NC. Takuma Sato - N/A: Didn't complete the year, and the Super Aguri was so terrible it's hard to place him.
NC. Anthony Davidson - N/A: Ditto.

Moved the topic to the EVDP forum as it doesn't really concern present-day F1. Don't worry, I understand you might be a bit confused give it's your first day here! ;)

Here are some rankings for 2006.

Fernando Alonso. 9.5. Brilliant Fernando strikes again.
Michael Schumacher. 9. Brilliant, but unlucky and lackluster qualifying sessions.
Kimi Räikkönen. 9. Deserved more than a handful of podiums.
Felipe Massa. 8.5. Great first season at Ferrari.
Jenson Button. 8. Well driven season, with his first win.
Robert Kubica. 8. Thrown into an F1 car in Budapest for the first time. Shortly after came a podium in Monza.
Mark Webber. 7.5. He did well in the crapbox of a car.
Takuma Sato. 7.5. Impressive for Super Aguri.
Nick Heidfeld. 7. Did well, but not as well as a debutant mid season
Nico Rosberg. 6. Good rookie season.
Pedro de la Rosa. 6. Nice for mid season starter.
Giancarlo Fisichella. 5.5. Anonymous to me, and overrated.
Jaques Villeneuve. 5. Walked out mid season. Not impressive.
Ralf Schumacher. 5. Didn't do much.
Jarno Trulli. 5. Didn't do much either.
Scott Speed. 5. He had Speed.
David Coulthard. 4.5. Crap, really.
Tonio Liuzzi. 4.5. Not horrible, but not great.
Christjan Albers. 4. Better than '05.
Christian Klien. 4. Not bad.
Franck Montangy. 3.5. Crap.
Robert Doornbos. 3. Crap again.
Rubens Barrichello. 2.5. Owned by Button.
Juan Pablo Montoya. 2.5. Left for NASCAR?!
Tiago Monteiro. 2. Crap.
Sakon Yamamoto. 2. Nothing impressive.
Yuji Ide. 0. Who the hell is this guy? Least impressive F1 driver in over a decade... Even Enoch agrees.

Hungary wasn't his first time in an F1 car. He was BMW's third driver at a time when that meant he actually got to participate in practice sessions. Though it was no less impressive that he managed to frequently top the timesheets at tracks he'd never been to.

Bumping this thread after almost exactly 5 years (not-premeditated, I swear!), I've recently decided to do end-of-year rankings for old F1 seasons again, in this case 1997-99. 1997 gave me a real headache, it was so hard to remain unbiased, especially when so many drivers had good seasons! I might do more of these when I have the time.

1997

1. M Schumacher [8.5 to 9]
2. Fisichella [8.5]
3. Coulthard [8.5]
4. Hakkinen [8.5]

14. Panis [6.5]
15. Trulli [6.5]
16. Salo [6]
17. Diniz [6]
18. Nakano [6]
19. Herbert [5.5]
20. Tuero [5]
21. J Verstappen [5]
22. J Magnussen [4]
23. Rosset [3.5]
