Off-season bit of fun 2019/20

Post by dr-baker »

For a number of years, we had an off-season word association game, but that got dropped, because some people got carried away and it artificially boosted their post count. Then we had themed quizzes, like identifying cars and people in photos, and the like. But we haven't had anything like that for a few years now. Let's see if this takes off or not.

This time, I suggest playing a version of the Wikipedia Game. To keep things fair and accountable, and so people can have several attempts, everyone will start on clicking "random" to start from a random place, and the aim will be to click on article links until you get to a pre-determined article at my selection. The aim will be to do so in as few links as possible. Please provide a list of all the links you clicked on to show how you did it. (By starting in different places, people won't be able to copy each other's routes to the selected article, although the final few links may bear similarities.) It'll be like the early days of the Monte Carlo Rally, where people started from multiple places in Europe and all had to converge on Monaco!

To start, I suggest starting from "random" and the target article to click towards will be... "Super Aguri." I'll set a deadline of Boxing Day (26th December) to give people time to try this and type up their links and stuff. And to troubleshoot any queries about this.

Think I got fairly lucky with my first attempt

1. William Davies Shipley https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Davies_Shipley
2. Berkshire https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkshire
3. United Kingdom https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom
4. Formula One https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One
5. Super Aguri https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Aguri_F1

Edited after being informed that Super Aguri links to the Formula One page

Probably should have stated, you can put answers on here, as FortiWinks has done. Mario has emailed his attempt to me, which I have copy-and-pasted below:

mario wrote:Hi,
I saw the post you'd written in "The Eric van de Poele Memorial Forum" for
a variant of the Wikipedia game, and decided to give it a go for your
target of getting to "Super Aguri" as quickly as possible from a random
article.

I hope that I've not messed up the way that I've done it (not tried this
game before), but my random starting article was "Renate" - I went from
there to Super Aguri as follows:
1) Renate - clicked on link "Province of Monza and Brianza"
2) Province of Monza and Brianza - clicked on link "Italy"
3) Italy - clicked on link for "Ferrari" (under the part "Economy of
Italy")
4) Ferrari - clicked on link "Formula 1"
5) Formula 1 - clicked on link "Super Aguri" (under the section on
"Constructors")

Is that a fair approach?

Sounds like fun!

Gerald Tagliabue
Sydney Swans (current name of South Melbourne FC)
Melbourne
Formula One (through Melbourne#Sports)
Super Aguri F1 (through Formula One#Constructors)

Got there surprisingly easy considering the random article I landed on.

I love this start. F1 themed challenge and where else would you end up but in the province of Monza!

My take:

1. National Gallery of Modern Art
2. New Delhi
3. India
4. Formula One
5. Super Aguri

Although, had I not known that the page "Formula One" contains a link to Super Aguri I would have perhaps taken a longer route.

2 Europe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe
3 Barcelona https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona
4 Formula One https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One
5 Super Aguri https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Aguri_F1

Ok that went alright. Though wat CarloSpace said.

Another one done in 5 steps, from the most random of beginnings :

1. Medusavirus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusavirus
2. Japanese https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan
3. Super GT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_GT
4. Aguri Suzuki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aguri_Suzuki
5. Super Aguri F1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Aguri_F1

Thought I may be able to get it in one less but no direct step from Super GT to Super Aguri ...

I agree. I'll make this my personal rule from this moment on!

Another take:

1. Labrador Iron Mines
2. Canaccord Genuity (Redirected from Canaccord Financial)
3. General Electric
4. Banco Santander (Redirected from Santander Group)
5. Formula One
6. Super Aguri F1

Much more fun without clicking the obvious countries, cities or other geographical regions :P

If we actually want to add a competitive element, we're gonna need a rule like this, seeing how many people tied for the first spot. If it's purely for fun, we don't necessairy need it, but it does add an extra challenge, and i must say i like this type of challenge.

I suppose that some situations might be a little tricky, as I can see a situation where somebody gets an initial link that would be a dead end in that case (some articles give a case where the only link is to a country). As CarloSpace noted, there was a certain appropriateness that, in the random link I started with, it should have directed me towards Monza though...

Anyway, I decided to see what would happen if I tried again and went down a different route, and this is what I ended up with:
1. Satipoella heilipoides
2. Beetle
3. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
4. General Electric
5. Banco Santander (Redirected from Santander Group)
6. Formula One
7. Super Aguri F1

Basically, once at General Electric, I ended up being directed down the same route as CarloSpace.

Interesting discussion going on. But as I put in the thread title, this is only meant to be a bit of fun, meaning no competitive element! If people want this to have a competitive element, I'll look at these comments for next year.

On another note, I will set a fresh target Wikipedia page to aim for next weekend so people have something fresh to try.

I do like the idea of having the more light hearted element of it, so perhaps you could have one that is more competitive and one that is more for fun.

So I said I would set a new challenge over the weekend, and so the new target page to aim for is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_W ... ing_driver)

David Walker, teammate to Emerson Fittipaldi at Lotus in 1972, is the only teammate to a championship winning teammate not to score points themselves.

This will remain non-competitive this off-season as I lack the time and/or inclination to collate results. Next year, however, I may make this competitive if there is still interest.

Time for another target page to aim for perhaps? We've had a reject team (Soooppppppeeerrrrr Aguuuuurrrrriiii), we've had a reject driver (Dave Walker). Now the target Wikipedia is a reject engine manufacturer: Life Racing Engines https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_Racing_Engines

I know there has not been official reject criteria for anything other than drivers and teams, but I think we can all agree that this engine would fit any definition of reject status for engine manufacturers.

So go ahead, click on 'random page' and try to find those elusive engines!
