Which formula 1 drivers are a mystery for you ?

Post by f1-gast »

Probably you know this, you heared about a f1 driver you read some info about this driver but still you don't get the driver, and is still be a mystery to you.
Well post them here maybe we can give eachother the answer.

I hav this with Luciano Burti, the first time i heared his name was in 1997 orso, and since then im asking myself who is he ?
I can't get a clear view of him, he was testdriver for Stewart Ferrari, drove for Prost, had this mega crashes, but still i don't know the guy it's the only f1 driver for me that i can't understand

HWNSNBM
Although we know a bit of his past before he joined the mighty Minardi, it is still too little for me, and I would love to know more. Also, I would love to know what he is up to now.

...or not? :?

Chanoch Nissany
This guy is a true legend for me, but I also would love to know about his relatively short racing career.

Tiff Needell
Some people don't know it, but Tiff Needell had his (rejectworthy) moments in F1 :D

Always wanted to know more about Sakon Yamamoto. I know he drove for both Super Agiri and then Spyker and was obviously a pay-driver with pretty dud results. And the legend that was Tomas Enge, who had a few races with Prost at the end of 2001.

Recent evidence from Richard's F1 suggests he's been whiling away his time driving the two-seater Minardi on demonstrations - it still exists, it still runs, apparently Paul Stoddart is still involved, and HWNSNBM's been one of his most loyal drivers. I think this is how Jamie & Enoch managed to get that interview with him a couple of years ago, on one of those demonstrations at the Australian GP.

I still want to see him race again, though!

I didn't know Nissany did compete in F3000 in 2004. Talk about meteoric rising through the ranks

Also, how fitting that he often piloted Nissan-powered cars too.

I only remember Ralph Firman as an F3 driver - battling hard with Oliver Gavin and Warren Hughes in the mid-90s. I never remember seeing him in F1, even though he did a full season with Jordan. Same with Pantano really.

I know Kiesa was reasonable in FFord and F3000 (wasn't it him who inherited the win following Bjorn Wirdheim's Epic Fail moment at Monaco?) and I remember Sospiri being brilliant in F3000 but after the Lola debacle I don't recall ever even seeing his name mentioned again.

I don't remember ever seeing Patrick Friesacher's name outside his spell with Minardi either.

*Nissany still got his 2005 Minardi overalls! (Probably his only set!)

Kiesa apparently had a big amount of cash behind him in junior formula 1, which helped him get the Minardi F1 drive in 2003. I dont think he was a dud F3000 driver, but he wasnt a gun as well. Tested with Minardi and Jordan in late 2004 and did well, was offered the 05' Minardi drive depending on cash, which failed to arrive so he took Jordan's Friday seat.

That Mianrdi drive went to Patrick Friesacher. A highly rated youngster, he was on Red Bull's books early in his career, but dropped just like Jani and Klien etc. Was driving in their F3000 team, but did average. Got Minardi drive, but ran out of cash. I think I read somewhere a while ago, his dream in particular was to drive F1 (I know thats everyones on here) in particular as he broke both his legs in a karting crash as a junior

Ralph Firman, aka Pierce Brosnan: Won the Autosport McLaren Trophy in 1995/1996??? Done okay, but spent his career mostly racing in Japan. Benson and Hedges wanted an Englishman at Jordan, and Pierce came knocking. Had a good record in Japanese Formula, (Jordan did well with Irvine in the same formula) and would have come with a smallish wage.
Miserable Thierry (Boutsen) staggers round mostly on ten cylinders (out of 12) with no clutch, low oil pressure, bad brakes and no grip to finish tenth, 3 laps down...

(Murray Walkers review of Boutsen's Brazil 1991 race).

Thats a point these days!

Never did. Technically from this year onwards, it's no longer sanctioned by the IRL, and it hasn't been called IRL since 2002 IIRC.

But yes, you do kinda fail when you fail to get your car up to speed (with a name like Speed), get replaced, and then see your car go wham in another drivers hands, in the centennial Indy 500. :D

For me? I don't know, Justin Wilson I guess. I know he was dominant (by the results sheet) F3000 champion, is now in IndyCar, but nothing much really.

Jos the Boss

had a lot of potential, wild sometimes.

He finished at the end of 2003, much to the regret of his former teams.

Benetton (dont exist {by name}), Simtek, Arrows, Tyrrell (dontexist{by name}) Stewart, HONDA, Minardi!

I think on memory he faced some time behind bars for assaulting his wife.

A bit of a mystery is Mika Salo.

Spent a year off in 2001 to test and develop the Toyota, then was sacked. Done a bit of Champ Car and a little Aussie V-8's but thats bout it!

He spent 1 or 2 races with Lotus at the end of 1994, Tyrrell in 1995 to 1997, then Arrows, then BAR and Ferrari, then Sauber then Toyota. Then there was his stint in CART, as you say, with Craig Pollock's team, whose name escapes me at the moment. I didn't know he was in V8s though. Good to know!
