Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2012 Germany

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Charles Pic's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Results to be done: July 28, Saturday

1. Sauber. Great double drive for them.
2. Button. About time he scored a solid result.

Hon mentions: Alonso, controlled the race. Petrov, I think he finished ahead of Grosjean and Senna.

1) Button: - Outperformed his team mate and put the frighteners on the top two

2) Sauber: - Intelligent strategy and superb pacy driving netted them big points

1. Sauber
Very solid double points finish, this should be a warning sign for Mercedes. They could get mugged.

2. Button
New package for McLaren, and he's back. Weird - still, kept it clean, scored a great third place. A good comeback, but he needs to keep this form up.

I'm not going to be obvious and give it to Button. Yes he had an upswing in form, but he did about what should be expected of him really.

So I'm giving both my votes to Sauber in this order

1. Kamui for finishing higher
2. Checo for a great recovery after poor quali and questionable grid penalty
Maria De Villotta will forever be badass. Rest in Peace.
Pulling for Schumi and Jules.

1. Kobayashi. Didn't expect him to finish so high. In fact I don't know how he moved ahead of Pérez, he was clearly behind with the same stops at nearly half distance.

2. Button. Even if he looked on the rise on Friday, I didn't expect to see him fighting for the race win.

Yeah, I think both Sauber drivers should have this one...

1. Kamui
2. Checo

1. Kobayashi - Brilliant drive from 12th, kept out of trouble at the start when everything was going off around him for a change.
2. Perez - A bigger jump in position from quali to the finish, but didn't have the pace that Kobayashi did when in theory, his strategy was the better one.

To me:
1. Jenson Button - didn't see him running that good
2. Narain Karthikeyan - really no one noticed him suddenly being consistent in comparison to Pedro and only 1 second behind Glock?

1. Kobayashi - I thought he would finish outside the points when I saw that he was starting on hard tires. However, he got his equal best finish after what turned out to be a great race for him.
2. Button - I predicted him for ROTR after his unimpressive recent races but he out-qualified Hamilton for the first time this season (not counting Spain) and got a well-deserved podium.

This is a no-brainer: Sauber

Both drivers show that they are up to the fight. Checo doing a massive solid mid-stint, and the only reason why is not in the other Ferrari right now is that the Cavallino doesn't want him to overshadow Fernando. Kamui took of the kamikaze outfit and drove brilliantly.

Honorable mention to Charles Pic: In Marussia's race, he not only beat Timo Glock, but also the ever improving HRT's.

I'll just repeat what everyone else said and say
1) Kobayashi
2) Perez

Button gets a mention as well though with a race-winner it's expected to make the podium every race.

2) Kobayashi - a welcome return to form

Sauber - 5th and 6th is no mean feat, even in a car of that level.
Petrov - I'm very glad this guy is still in F1, Caterham done the right thing hiring him to replace Trulli.

1. Petrov (at one point he was holding Webber, and I thought he was one lap behind, but in fact, he wasn't)
2. Raikkonen (I didn't expect much from Lotus, so seeing 4th is a little surprise)

I'm not going to nominate Jenson, as I had a feeling he might do well today (though admittedly not that well!)

1st - Sauber, for obvious reasons.
2nd - Charles Pic, because he was consistently ahead of his team-mate and the HRTs and pretty close to the Caterhams at times.

Not nomiating Jenson; with McLaren actually sorting out their car it was inevitable he'd be back on form.

1. Sauber - solid drives from Kobayashi and Perez, good way to bounce back after a couple of disappointing races
2. Petrov - drove like a boss in the first stint.

1. Sauber - This season has already been the best in their non-BMW history and the points just keep on rolling in. Extra Kudos to Sergio Perez for entering the points after like 4 laps and staying there for the rest of the event
2. Vitaly Petrov - Spent the entire race bashing Hamilton's, Grosjean's and Williams' multi million dollar faces in with his Caterham and even stayed ahead of a Red Bull on merit at one point. Whilst it may have no qualifying pace whatsoever, the Caterham's race pace must be pretty decent.

I will go with 1st - Sauber and 2nd - Petrov.

Honorable nomination go to Button, who doesn't get into my book because this is where he should be in the first place.

1 - Kobayashi. 4th place from 13th is good going. :)
2 - Perez - So far back and still 6th.

Honorable Mentions

Button - Showed the speed he does have to get a good 2nd place when we all thought he would go backwards.
Petrov - Although 16th is so far from the points it was a good drive and outperformed Kovvy
Massa - His drive to move up the grid was sublime, no only joking. Where is the ROTR thread...

And here are the results for the German GP. We see Sauber in first, with Kobayashi second... so basically it was an intra-Sauber battle.

1. Sauber - 168 pts
2. Kamui Kobayashi - 142 pts
3. Jenson Button - 100 pts
4. Vitaly Petrov - 66 pts
5. Sergio Perez - 48 pts
6. Kimi Räikkönen - 12 pts
= Charles Pic - 12 pts
8. Sebastian Vettel - 10 pts
9. Narain Karthikeyan - 6 pts
= Pedro De La Rosa - 6 pts
