Martin Whitmarsh is insane

That's like the 4th publicocrapometer that someone has broke this month.
In all seriousness though considering McLaren is basically team Lewis who here thinks that this driver pairing won't blow up in Martin's face come season's end?

Is Whitmarsh insane or is Jenson a schmuck for joining McLaren?

He's insane if he approaches James Allen's Church of Lewisteria for sponsorship.

Re: Martin Whitmarsh is insane
I say stainless steel privates. They could have so easily kept Kovalainen or hired a clear number 2, such as Sutil, but have decided to see if they can pair the last two (British!) world champions. It's worked in the past when they had the best car, in terms of results - although arguably it didn't work in terms of well-being inside the team, with Senna and Prost very nearly killing each other every other week.
Mind you, Whitmarsh isn't Dennis, and arguably both Lewis-2010 and Button are more grown-ups than Lewis-2007 and Alonso.
Possibly.
I mean, it could happen.

It won't though.

Re: Martin Whitmarsh is insane
I think they went for Jenson because the 2010 regs won't suit Lewis. Lewis wrecks his tyres and crashes a lot in normally-fuelled situations, I think they're hedging their bets on a fast driver who can also look after the car and not panic and bin it in qualifying, or blow his tyres after one lap.

On the other hand, Lewis is good at adapting to the car, while Jenson seems to only perform really well when the car underneath his is spot on. It could go either way, really.

Yeah... so it seems to make sense to have two championship-winning but very different drivers to cover all eventualities. If it turns out that Lewis is all at sea, Heikki or another clear number 2 isn't going to be able to step up to the plate.

Be ironic if McLaren win the constructors title but loose the drivers title to Alonso by a point...

Driver rivalry is good...if you're an spectator. If not, you better go and buy a couple pacifiers real soon...

Ferrari made a mess with their driver line up for 2010, McLaren simply doesn't want to lag behind...

The McLaren and Ferrari pairings will certainly end up taking points off each other, and if Mercedes gets Kubica (which I suspect they will), the same will happen there. Vettel must be fancying his chances...

Carlos, we're kind of like East German border guards. We moderate in tandem, so that if one of us strays off, the other one can use the Australian-provided high-powered artillery to make sure that they don't get too far.

I thought it was like the Wild West, where an equilibrium was established although the State itself couldn't force the obedience of the law. With Oz-supplied Colt Pattons.
Back on topic: McLaren says they're going bonkers with the new car and that - get this - both they're drivers have very neutral driving styles.
"We're lucky in that Lewis and Jenson both have fairly neutral driving styles – as does Pedro – so it's unlikely to be a problem for us next year," he said.

Wonder about that. Lewis seems very hard on the material, to be honest. That's one of the reasons why I find him particularly interesting to watch.
