Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2013 Bahrain

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Charles Pic's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until 26th, I'll do the results then.

1) Pérez. Just because of sticking it (a lot!) on his teammate.

2) Alonso. Great race even after all the DRS troubles.

1) Sergio Pérez - finally a good race.
2) Paul di Resta - fourth place. Now we have to spend ten days hearing all about how he should have scored a podium.

I'm actually kind of stuck on my nominations here, because quite a few drivers did surprisingly well - considering the trouble he had in the earlier part of the race, Alonso's recovery drive was pretty respectable and he pulled off some quite smart moves despite not having DRS.

Perez seems to have heeded the comments by Whitmarsh about his driving and was a lot firmer in his defence (almost a little too firm at times), and I do half wonder if, had he not been held up by Button earlier in the race, he might have been able to have beaten Hamilton for 5th. Either way, considering that he had a bit of a rough time in China, that battling drive should take some of the pressure off of him.

And whilst he may not be to everybody's tastes here, Di Resta did well too in the end to take 4th and put Force India 3 points clear of McLaren - I thought that he'd finish in the lower half of the top 10, but on the contrary he finished much better than I was expecting.

1. Pic - finished ahead of a fully funded F1 car on merit, and trounced Marussia
2. Di Resta - a great drive, the sort that suits his conservative style, but he still made a couple of good moves stick

Since there were many good drivers out there, I'm going to split both awards.

1. Perez and di Resta (5-5 points)
Both needed to sit up and show a good race - and they both did.

2. Alonso and Grosjean (3-3 points)
Alonso's performance wasn't that surprising, but that lack of DRS made it difficult. Why Grosjean is nominated for the second one? Lotus was good. But still, he completed the 2012 déjavu.

1. Di Resta - Actually drove a good race there.
2. Grosjean - Ditto for him.

Two drivers who I didn't see making the podium at all this season. Nicely done drives from the both of them. Di Resta gets a higher award for competing in more inferior machinery.

1. Paul di Resta: Finished 4th. If he had the mongrel of Rosberg and Webber he would have finished 3rd

2. Romain Grosjean: This is the Grosjean i want to see: Neat and fast

3. Sergio Perez: What could he have done if he had a faster car?

Honorable mentions to

Nico Rosberg: I don't care if he finished 9th the mongrel and determination he showed out there shows he is no longer a push over

Fernando Alonso: Great recovery when i thought he would retire

2 - Grosjean: Nice recovery and got a podium with a clever strategy.

1. Perez - Wow, that was some stellar driving out of the young Mexican. Drove like a madman. I'm incredibly impressed.
2. Pic - Beat a Sauber. That's really good.

Honorable mentions to RoGro for translating an 11th starting spot into a podium and di Resta for a superb drive to fourth and to Alonso for getting points after too many pitstops and sans DRS.

Oh, we can split? Alrighty...

1st: Perez/Di Resta (great drives from them, definitely proved they can race hard and fast.)
2nd: Grosjean/Pic (got themselves into some very good positions; Grosjean got a podium from 11th and Pic beat the Marussias and Gutierrez.)

1. Paul di Resta: Brilliant drive. I thought he would finish far lower than where he qualified but he showed what he can do on a good day. So close to a podium...
2. Sergio Pérez: He showed why he is at McLaren. Most entertaining drive of the race, completely embarrassed Button.

1.-Sergio Pérez: Checo drove like his 2012 self, leaving in the dust his more rated partner and owning (again) Fernando and Webber. The upgrades for the European season could be the breakpoint for the mexican
2.-Paul Di Resta: A no-nonsense drive. He stick to his guns and he delivered. Solid drive.

Honorable mentions to Fernando Alonso (that high with half-Ferrari), Romain Grosjean (on the points with the Lotus intact!) and Charles Pic (beat the Marussias and Esteban Gutiérrez on merit)

1. Grosjean. I know he was on the podium this race last year, but this year, until now he was nowhere. So a solid comeback
2. Di Resta. Good steady race, beat many of the 'better' drivers and teams.

1st Romain Grosjean- Finally showed some great racing today. A great result
2nd Paul Di Resta - No matter how much you dislike him he drove great today

Special mention to Charles Pic who drove great to get 17th, Perez who got 6th and beat his teammate , Maldonado who nearly got 10th and strangely Alonso who without DRS manged to Salvage a few points when I thought he would get nothing

1. Di Resta: Excellent run in the Force India in what could have been a podium for him.

2. Perez: Gave Button a run for his money, and made a great climb up to 6th.

1. Di Resta - finished 4th on merit, error free race, stuck to his strategy. Only lost out to Grosjean's faster car on faster tyres at the end

2. The aforementioned Grosjean. Great fight-back from early stop to clear some debris in the radiators that could have ruined his strategy, but stuck with it, raced 100% cleanly, and even stuck it round the outside of Perez at turn 4 despite having seen him banging and barging with JB

I was going to give it to Di Resta but Force India have a decent car this season, it's not like Sutil in 4th at Monaco 2008 (though that ended badly).

1. Charles Pic - beat an established team on merit, even if he did beat a ROTR candidate.

2. Fernando Alonso - dead last with no DRS, yet managed a fightback to 8th.

1. Romain Grosjean - And that is how you silence the critics. Clinical driving all the way to a well-deserved podium.

2. Paul Di Resta - The glass of milk was on it all day.

Honorable mentions to Alonso, Pic and Maldonado.

1) Perez - I had no problem with the feistiness quite honestly. Just because he was doing it to a BRITISH team mate, in a BRITISH team, god forbid! Sky's jingoism on this was a bit too much to swallow to be honest (bear in mind that I really like JB as well)

Anyway...

2) So many candidates....um....Grosjean, for turning back the clock to the high-finishing, non-crashing Romain of around a year ago.

1. Perez - Took it to Button. Doesn't matter if he was overly aggressive, it was precisely what's been missing the last few races.
2. Grosjean - I seem to recall he was nowhere early on, and then suddenly, podium.

1. Paul Di Resta - The Glass of Milk decided to be mildly interesting for once, and nearly got rewarded with a podium for his efforts
2. Sergio Perez - The kid wasn't taking crap from nobody today and it was highly entertaining to see him getting into a dogfight with people, rather than being mugged by everyone and his dog as he's been in the other races so far this year.

Honourable mentions to Rrrmmmnnn Grrrsssjjjnnn for coming out of nowhere to be on the podium, Fernando Alonso for making his way back through the field with no DRS (FIA and Pirelli, take note), and Charles Pic for spending all weekend bashing Marussia's faces in and beating Gutierrez at the death.

Di Resta - A nice not bland and anonymous 4th! 'Nuff said.
Perez - A fine drive while trouncing his team-mate. Finally he came back to life, so let's hope it stays that way.

1. Di Resta. Should have got the podium spot. Well driven.

2. Pérez. Showed he could dogfight for position in the points and used his tyres better than Button. Proved that he isn't a No. 2 driver.

Honorable mention to Pic for pounding Marussia into the sand and beating Guiterrez fair and square.
